[00:01:00] We are sneaking this Christmas movie in under the wire It's not going to stop us We're going to keep doing it in August We do this every week, Brandon That's true It doesn't matter Next Friday, we get to celebrate my birthday By watching a Christmas movie That's right That was your request I actually said, dude We can do something different for your birthday He said, no I don't know I used to choose something for his birthday And I'm out here watching Denise Monet's Merry Little Baby I did not pick a birthday movie this year And I wish I had

[00:01:29] Oh, there you go It would have been Denise Monet's Merry Little Baby Oh, I mean Shortlisted for sure Now that you know We are talking about a Dickens of a Christmas today Not to be confused Not to be confused So we're going to talk about it here in a second But Alonzo, how are you? [00:01:59] Has your Christmas in July been everything that you hoped it would be and more? You know, I have to say Little surprises around every corner That were nice to encounter Like, you know More serious channels We're dealing with Christmas in July this year Than I think maybe in the past More, you know Just sort of things in the wild People offering discounts for stuff that's going to happen later this year But they want to sell you a ticket early So, you know I felt like I was getting my fill of, you know

[00:02:29] Summertime holiday feels Especially, obviously, at Bramble Fest So, you know Yeah, Bramble Fest Yeah, of course That's the highlight Everything else just goes around And Dan, how was your Christmas in July? Was it everything you hoped it would be? I'm so glad it's over As soon as it Listen, two of my favorite things happen in July Bramble Fest And then my family goes on vacation And we do nothing And those two things were amazing What about I don't acknowledge We have our yearly slumber party You and I do have that

[00:02:59] You didn't mention that And I'm sorry You made it That was just for us But you made it very festive this year And you know how I feel about that And so I think that did take a little bit of the fun out of that for me Okay The sleeping bags still were great Yes, they were As per usual Yes, they were You got me an extra long sleeping bag I did Which is great I did That was very nice of you After last year's debacle That's right My torso is freezing cold all year All year All year Even all night You have to do that pad under

[00:03:28] That's really where That's right Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah Come to the rescue And the fact you wanted to do it in a graveyard this year Was also pretty crazy It was a weird slumber party in a graveyard We had fun Which is weird We had fun But I don't acknowledge the rest of it I don't acknowledge Christmas in July is a thing I'm sorry That's like Michael Wilbon Did you see him not acknowledge the Savannah Bananas? No They wanted to ask him about the Savannah Bananas He's like I don't do that That's not baseball Wow All right, Michael So I'm sure

[00:03:56] Some might argue that's the appeal of the Savannah Bananas Yeah, that is the appeal I just Don't It's great for others Christmas in July I just don't acknowledge it It's not for me So There you go Says the man with a little Debbie tree Floating above his head I don't want to talk about it Yeah But You know Stud to the left of me I'm talking about Brandon Gray Obviously That's right You get it Yeah Stars to the left of me Crystal trees Here I am All right We're talking Dickens of a Christmas today

[00:04:25] Let's get to it It originally dropped on various streamers across the internet on November 4th, 2025 And it went a little something like this Zara That's her name The store? No Zara Does not like Christmas Or so it seems I think she's honestly kind of okay with it But she's a lawyer who has to attend this progressive Victorian dinner with her friend and co-worker Chloe It's not great for her

[00:04:55] Her dress rips Her hat falls in the fire It is a whole thing Zara though is quite smitten by the person who renovated this estate Rafe Rafe We got Zara and Rafe You get it Rafe tells everybody about a sneaky little ghost that lives at the estate Come to kind of really like this guy Chloe says that she has seen the ghost She's a believer

[00:05:24] She also sees that Zara and Rafe are into each other So she's going to try to make that happen The next day Zara finds one of the books from the estate In her bag with Rafe's business card inside of the book She assumes that it's just silly Chloe But it was actually the ghost that put the book in her bag But good thing the ghost is sneaky like that Because What a great What a good sentence Because Zara

[00:05:52] Has a water pipe leak in her living room And needs somebody to come and repair it Naturally she calls Rafe He has a history with this and with his renovations And so Rafe is going to come over and take a look And he gets right to work Yeah he does The ghost keeps doing stuff that forces Zara to call Rafe And that leads to her kind of liking Rafe Showing up to Rafe's son's hockey practices

[00:06:22] We get no more information at that time But it will come later Yes this was a big deal First she said no But then finally she did it They all are getting attached And Zara and Rafe almost kiss twice Interrupted once by the smell of smoke She's allergic And the second time by a text message ding Classic Everything is going great until the snowball fights

[00:06:52] That's right folks Dun dun dun If you ever want to see Bran Just cry laugh Watch him watch this snowball fight scene So she gets really upset When Rafe's son throws a snowball fight at her Throws a whole snowball fight at her? He picked up the whole fight? Yeah yeah Tries to start with Yeah Turns out her brother used to throw snowballs

[00:07:17] She opens up about how she had a brother Who loved hockey And snowball fights But died in a snowmobile accident We're here That's just what happens This is the defining tragedy of her life y'all This is just what happens Back Back to falling in love Shall we?

[00:07:46] Back to falling in love Until Until he shows up as a witness in a case that she's working on He's a witness for the opposition She doesn't take it easy on him She wins her case But that really hurts his feelings So she does what any normal person who has worked their entire life to get where they got Does She quits her job Yeah Woo The ghost

[00:08:18] The ghost The ghost pushes Rafe off of a ladder and breaks his leg So that she'll have to come to sit with him by his side of the hospital And they'll make up And it works It works They all spend Christmas together And she tells everybody that she's going to open up her own law firm Chloe's going to come work for her And she's going to fight for her right to party And the things that are important to her And finally

[00:08:45] Zara and Rafe finally get that kiss And that my friends was A dickens of a Christmas We Did it Boy oh boy What a time to be alive All right Let's take a break We'll come back We will We'll break this movie down Here on Deck the Hallmark Oh you missed

[00:09:45] I saw most of this movie last year Oh no We did it again Because again I have I have a Christmas movie minute to fill And this was one of those ones And Brian You'll hear You'll You'll feel me on this one You know there's that early part of the season Where Hallmark is maybe doing one or two movies a week And nobody else has stepped up yet Yeah And you November 4th November 4th Yeah You have to start looking It's like everybody else at the bar has one beer and goes home And I'm like we're just getting started gang

[00:10:14] Exactly So yeah So you start going to the shadier corners of the streaming world And there it was on Tubi And I was like alright let's give this a shot And yeah I don't think I'd gotten to the snowball fight So heaven only knows what I would have thought about it But already I was like Okay Ashley Nubro is a pro She has done these for years She knows the assignment The gentleman opposite her Oh my god

[00:10:43] Apparently has a very successful career He does a lot of TV westerns I couldn't believe That kind of thing How accomplished he is Yeah Yes Like he He clearly is good at many things This Not on that list No Whatever it Whatever the The thing that you have to have To be a leading man in one of these movies This guy I'm sorry I'm sure he's got a lot Of other colors in his paint box But this ain't it You could have convinced me He shot all of his scenes in one day You could have convinced me of that

[00:11:13] Yeah Yeah You know In the same way that like You know Your Tyler Hines Your Christopher Palahas Can bring something to these movies That like You know Daniel Day-Lewis Probably couldn't Yeah You know There's a You know I think It's a great save there Yeah And so yeah Whatever it is This is It's not happening here Yeah I have a lot to discuss About the book Oh my god That we keep coming back to In this movie And yeah But generally speaking

[00:11:42] This is just Is this an all Canadian production I believe It's gotta be Yeah It's gotta be Yeah Yeah On one hand We don't need another Christmas Carol adaptation Here we go So in theory A welcome surprise That this movie is not We The two of us Definitely thought We were getting into another Christmas Carol adaptation Right On the other hand This probably should have

[00:12:12] Should have just been a Christmas Carol adaptation You mean the fact that it's a Hey it works you know It's a book about books by Dickens But not even the Christmas Carol It's like No The other The other Dickens books His many romances Didn't see it coming Yeah Yeah This movie is wild It doesn't take long for you to realize It's gonna be wild Because the two leads are Zara and Rafe That's right Wild

[00:12:41] And yeah This is It's a It's a It's a It's a It's a It's a tough sledding And I The scene With the snowball fight Is the funniest scene I've seen this year Oh my goodness You guys saw some of the clips From Christmas Prince No With the Christmas Prince This is like This is like A parody Talk about Like a journey in editing Like if we know That she has a brother That passed away And played hockey And there's a scene At the beginning

[00:13:11] With them as kids That scene All of a sudden Flips Yeah But as it stands It's hysterical I mean Actively hysterical You've gotta go watch this scene Yeah It's so wild So no Not great Unfortunately But Get after it Let's do it again Run it back Yeah Yeah Thanks I hate it I don't Like it is

[00:13:40] Quite a moment The snowball scene When she gets hit in the back With a snowball And turns around With tears in her eyes And goes Did you just throw that snowball Is like an all time moment Alonzo's not wrong Ashley Newborough's a pro And you know I think that the reason This movie Does make it to the finish line Is because of her Having said that Along the way There are some doozies You get Like They don't bother To explain anything You know how some Hallmark movies Spend the first ten minutes

[00:14:10] Just explaining the whole movie To you So that we can get on With the plot of the movie This movie takes an opposite Tact Which is It doesn't explain to you Who this ghost is Why they're appearing The deal with their brother You know Why Showing up to hockey practice Is a big deal So it really Leaves a lot of work For the viewer And not in like a Hey you're a smart enough Viewer to figure this out In a We don't have time to do this We've got things to do Exposition is for losers Yeah This also sets

[00:14:40] Feminism back Like centuries Like Like This movie could have been Directed by Phyllis Schlafly Like It is Like There is She is a high powered Lawyer That wins her case On merit and intellect And goes You know what It's not worth it I have to take care Of this fully grown man And his fully grown adult son It's a crazy premise Of a movie I couldn't believe What I was watching From start to finish Not

[00:15:09] Not good Not good at all But you know what We're here So we'll talk about it Some more I guess Start for the feels Before we talk about What this movie gives Feels We'll start with you Alonzo Yeah well You know I'm glad I had a reason To go back and finish This thing Because obviously It got even more Bonkers Than I realized But that's about it This movie has A ghost And we get to See ghosts And the ghost

[00:15:38] Is a little stinker And I kind of Liked that Like I liked This is your All the feels Yeah yeah yeah The ghost Is a little stinker He's a trickster The ghost is a little stinker And we get to see him Be a little stinker And he has that little Smirk on his face Like oh here I go again I like that we actually Got to see the ghost And the ghost Like the They didn't leave Any Anything up to the Imagination here As to whether or not The ghost is real The ghost is real In this movie They leave out All the other Exposition about

[00:16:08] Like character stuff Yes We're very clear On this ghost We are clear On ghosts And the ghost Is not Tied to the estate The ghost Can go Elsewhere And I really Like the ghost Stuff Dano Yeah so I can't believe This got to me But we do see A scene early In this movie Where Ashley Newborough And her friend Her friend Her business Chloe Her assistant Yes But they're also Friends Yes they are In their Victorian Era costuming And they're going To this Charles Dickens thing

[00:16:38] And they're Walking outside And it is They're walking In real snow And not real snow That looks beautiful Like with big flakes And falling softly With no wind It's the snow That you more often Would get in the New York New Jersey area Where it's going Sideways It's wet It's not comfortable You're going to have To shovel it later That's right Yes like You can tell Even filming the scene That they are Not They're doing a great Job as actors But they are Uncomfortable because The snow is hitting Them in the face And I got to be honest

[00:17:07] It really worked for me Like it was like A we got to walk here We had to park X amount away Parking's tough It's this is what happens We don't have A Victorian coat So we're just Kind of stuck With all these outfits Yeah and I And I got to be honest Like seeing that Like made me feel cold Like it's like You know one time We arrived for Christmas Con in You know and landed At Newark And when we walked Outside it was doing That and we were like Holy lord We're in the wrong place And it was like There is that That part of New York snow

[00:17:37] That I don't think Is ever romanticized In these movies That was like Probably the highlight Of this movie for me So I'm here for it The Christmas con load In this year Wasn't great Christmas con load In was real cold It wasn't great It was real cold Out there gang Yeah That was where Your bones hurt Yeah That was cold Snow on the ground Puddles there Right in front of you You gotta kind of go around There's no way You're not getting A little bit wet No It's just tough Alright let's take a break We'll come back We'll get to the weight What and the what The homework here on Deck the Hallmark Deck the Hallmark

[00:18:42] Another place for dessert Another place Also known as Branna's nightmare Yeah Yeah It's a thing where Several people are hosting In different locations And you go from Apartment to apartment Or house to house Or whatever This is one house I assumed that That's why they were walking It's because they were coming From one other location And that was the Progressive aspect No I think they said They talk about parking Do they And carriages I was doing the work They call it a progressive Man It's the whole evening In that one state In the house

[00:19:11] They go from room to room That's the progressive part It's progressive And they work out of you That is progress Yeah yeah yeah It's moderately progressive So I'm a moderate I like my progressive dinner It's a moderate progressive dinner In one house I will get out of my chair And walk to a different chair That's right And continue eating Yes Yes Lil Stinker Ghost Causes a flooding In her apartment And Dude Dude tells her Like well If you Wipe up

[00:19:40] Sop up the water And turn on the fans It'll dry out the carpets And you see her Sopping up the water And there's a big fan behind her And it is not turned on No It's not even turned on Maybe you should have been More specific about How that works But yeah And then at some point She decided I'm going to just Turn my hair dryer on And leave it on all night And hold it in my hands That's right She wakes up That was one of mine But I got plenty She wakes up Wakes up On the couch

[00:20:09] With a running hair dryer That is just Hating it at the car That's an actual death wish I'm pretty sure That is arson Waiting to have her Yeah Mind you also She is just Before the dinner She finds out That she has this Make or break court case Like she's got to win this thing That's right Or she's on the street That's right And she's just met A contractor Who is willing to come Make a late night house cold And she's like Nah I got this Yeah Easy Easy Done Lady come on Yeah You know What are we doing here

No one Because it is clearly written for idiots It is

[00:25:31] They look like brothers Wild A wild situation How old is Rafe Supposed to be With a 20 With a 17 year old son 100% 100% 100% Who could go pro After playing Forestide hockey What's the whole thing With the friend Who has to work Extra shifts Because his mom And dad are separated Like that bomb Gets dropped And then we never Come back to it That kid is such a mystery Dude

[00:26:00] I thought he was The same person As her brother The framed picture Of her brother That she has They look very similar When she first Looks like Pulls out that picture In the box That is next to The fully lit tree In the unfinished basement Both Dan and I Thought that Because it's a kid In a hockey Uniform Yeah Once you put the helmet On them They all kind of Look alike But it just kind of Looked like this kid But then the kid Is at their Christmas

[00:26:29] He spends Christmas With them Because mom is working Extra shifts Extra shifts Yeah But Yeah Alright Cool Yeah Cool Poor kid It's tough Not a wait what But every time I was watching There was a hockey Footage moment Dave would walk Through the room And say Do some really Obscene quote From Shorzy So that Of course Yeah She has a court case About a failed home renovation And never bothered To ask her contract Her boyfriend

[00:26:58] Any questions In her research process That's so stupid Why would she do that Why would she utilize that Don't come over And help me When you call me Late at night And do not tell me Anything about this subject In which you were Presumably well versed And that I am having To learn from the ground up As it were That's literally The type of contractor He is Specifically That type of Yes Victorian renovation Like she should have Gotten him as an expert witness And then When he is an expert witness And her move Is to discredit him

[00:27:28] Because it is her job That's right All she does Is basically say What was your major In college And it was something That wasn't Victorian home renovation Because that's what Everybody studies As an undergraduate If you're going to go Into that And boom And he is He is so Betrayed Like she has Just destroyed His professional reputation It's like She asked a question About your credentials Again It's her job And then she quits That job And then she quits

[00:27:57] That job Because she feels So dirty inside For having Done this terrible Terrible thing Having been a good lawyer Crazy Exactly For doing her job Yeah All of that Was just bananas Yeah She's allergic To smoke Guys We have to She's allergic To smoke She says it Do you know What's crazy About that is I'm allergic To smoke You know What's crazy About that is Brand She joins 8 billion Other people

[00:29:54] Zara has I'm sorry Chloe has fallen asleep At the progressive dinner Which is hilarious to me She's in the bag And the ghost Sits down next to her Like on the Arm of the couch And nudges her head So that it falls Onto Zara's shoulder And I'm like You sneaky little ghost How progressive of you Yeah In her defense There was a lot of Sherry in that tribe Yeah It was the sherry In the baked good That got her Yeah The progressive part

[00:30:23] Of the progressive dinner Is just the ghost Really wants these two girls To hook up That's the thing The progressive My guy Rafe says That he's gonna restore The original hardwood floors And that's what they look like Okay You're telling me That that's the original Hardwood floor Pristine Get out of here Pristine Get out of here This is And I will I would bet The house on it The most

[00:30:53] The Victorian house The Victorian house The most Hockey per capita In any movie With Dickens in the title Of all time Ever There is so much hockey There is so much hockey In this movie And for a long time We don't know why There's more hockey Than the one where Kevin McGarry is a hockey Checking it twice Yeah This has more hockey There is more hockey Than Dickens In this In this movie There's a lot of hockey So much hockey Yeah But I do want to point out That the hockey team's Locker room

[00:31:22] For the pep talks Is just the Cafeteria That's right The lobby Cafeteria area That's where the locker room is Of the ring I just Really I know we've laughed We've had fun But just To break it down One more time For the folks at home Rave's son Throws a snowball At her Oh my god She turns around Tears in her eyes Did you just throw The snowball at me And at that point He My guy still doesn't get it He's like Yeah

[00:31:52] Throw another one at her And then Rave's like Hey hold up Hold up Goes and talks And then It's crazy My brother Used to do that She had tears in her eyes He played hockey And then died In a snowmobile accident Whoa Wowzers A snowmobile accident What in the world What's crazy about this movie And she blames herself Yeah That's right Yeah What's crazy is
