[00:00:02] [SPEAKER_02] This is a Bramble Jam Podcast Hi, I'm Bran and I love Hallmark movies
[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_01] Hey, I'm Panda and I like Hallmark movies
[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_03] I'm Dan and I despise Hallmark movies
[00:00:17] [SPEAKER_05] And I'm Emilia Ullerup and I act in Hallmark movies
[00:00:23] [SPEAKER_03] And this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast
[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_02] Do you ever realize that your whole life you've been doing something wrong?
[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_03] The apologies are going to start early in this episode Emilia Ullerup is who we have joining us
[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_02] Thank you, finally
[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_03] Oh my goodness
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_02] Is that the only reason you came on was just to correct us?
[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_05] Every time I hear your podcast I cry in my pillow about my name being said wrong
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_03] I'll never get it wrong again, Emilia You have my word Emilia Ullerup, so nice of her to join us before she goes back to her homeland, Denmark If you can believe it
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_02] Thank you so much I believe we have reviewed three of your movies in our existence You're one of our faves And we could not be more excited to have you on the podcast
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_05] Thank you so much I'm very excited to be here
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_02] Wow How about you just take us back to your childhood Tell us a little bit about yourself What it was like growing up and how you wanted to become an actress
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, sure So as you've already revealed, I am Danish Born there And then my father had a job that kind of took us around the world So every three to four years we'd move I started in New York City, which is where I coincidentally am right now And then we just kind of jumped around from there Belgium, Vietnam I eventually moved to Canada Back to Denmark a bunch And then now also Los Angeles
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_05] But I knew I wanted to act, I think in about grade two
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_00] Wow
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_05] You know, it just felt so good to have people look at you and laugh when you wanted them to And cry when you wanted them to And then it just There was never an option B Which terrified I think everybody around me But so far we're okay
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, yeah you are I mean we tell people all the time We do a Hallmark podcast
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_03] That's right, there's no option B for us Just a Hallmark podcast
[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_02] Hallmark shuts it down We're in trouble
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_03] Who are we going to make fun of?
[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_05] I'm sure there are plenty others you could find
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_03] Yeah, we probably could Emilia, you're so charming and so great in all the movies that you're in Even if the movies aren't Tell us Do you have a Do you have a favorite Hallmark Performance of yours that you really just have such fond memories of Or you've done I think eight movies plus a TV show You know, do you have one that you're like this is I loved them all or I had different experiences But this has been my favorite one
[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, you know, I think I think for me my favorite one is Chesapeake Shores We've done four We just finished shooting season four And why I love it is because I think we really have stepped out of the box And have you guys seen it?
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_03] We have not seen it We have not, we've not dug into the TV shows yet
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_05] It's worth it It really is worth it It's different than the Christmas movies They're kind of almost like as if they could be on two different networks Which I love that they that Hallmark does such different material But but what I love about it is that we've we've kind of gone really deep with the characters
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_05] It's a it's a family that's kind of not not in love with each other but also in love with each other and and battling battling the past and all of that and I think I really like what we get to do on that show
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_03] Plus you get to interact with the Chessies which I I found out the hard way if you just I was just kind of making jokes I'd never seen the show And you don't joke about the Chessies And you don't joke about the Chessies They're very serious
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_02] Is that right? Yes Okay I'll remember that too All the hashtags really Yeah
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_03] Hardee's, Chessies You don't want to mess with any of those people That's right That's right
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_02] Dead serious people Yeah So you you do the series Like how how does that that differ as far as filming? I would imagine filming a TV show is is different than a TV movie
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_03] The movies are 15 days for one movie, right?
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, how long is a is a series or a season of a series?
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_05] We shoot. It depends on how long the season is We usually get 10 episodes and that takes about three and a half almost four months
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_00] Okay Wow
[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, so so an episode of TV regularly you say is is about seven days of filming And for for an hour long episode and so we usually shoot from sometime in April to the end of July
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_00] Uh-huh
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_05] Um this season we only we only got six episodes
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_03] Oh
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_05] So
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_03] It's like Game of Thrones that makes them even more special, right?
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_05] That's right. That's okay. Yes. 100%
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_03] And that's the only way we can compare Chesapeake Shores to Game of Thrones, right? Okay. All right
[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_02] So with the Hallmark movies obviously there's you've done every type of you've done the winter movies you've done you've done during the middle of the year and you've done the Christmas movies Obviously the Christmas movies get the most uh pressed you feel like um you feel like Hallmark puts a little bit more uh a little bit more work into the the Hallmark Christmas movies to make them feel extra special or are are are they all in on every time of the year?
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_05] I think they're all in at every time of the year to be honest. Um I think their Christmas movies is where they've made their mark where they truly stand apart from other networks and so therefore it's special to so many people But I really have found that no matter what time of year I'm doing a movie they're they're they're serious
[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_03] Well, they sent you to a real life winter castle for a movie that wasn't a Christmas movie. So they're definitely serious Can you tell us just a little bit about that? Like what that was like filming in a place like that?
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, so that was in um in ottawa Uh, actually it was Quebec City. Um, we started in Ottawa and then went to Quebec City for the actual ice hotel and I i'd never seen anything like it There are two of them in the world one is in in uh in quebec city and the other one is in sweden and uh, it was crazy man like It was also the end of the season which means it was getting warmer Which means it was melting? Oh, wow. Yeah, uh, yeah
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_02] They had they had just uh shut down for the season. Is that right? Yeah, just close it down. Yeah
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, yeah, we were we were they were like you got about you know, 10 days before we're tearing it down And and by the last day I I have a video where you can just hear dripping and cracking everywhere around
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_00] Oh my gosh
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, it was a it was real life thriller, but uh But it was it was so cool. It just you know, it's it's So much can be done visually now with visual effects and special effects But when you get to actually be in a location where you there's no acting required to just be in it It's it's a real special treat these days when so much is done on green screen and remotely
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, tell me uh, you've been, you know, you've been doing some homework stuff for a while now You've you've experienced the fans, you know how devoted they are and you i'm sure are aware of kind of the The following that is these especially homework christmas movies. They're just people go nuts for them What do you one? What do you attribute that to? What do you what do you think the main reason for that is? But two what is it like to to be not just a part of it, but a pretty big part of of this crazy cult following?
[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, it's it's interesting being from Denmark. I it's foreign to me I I stepped into this network and had no idea what hallmark christmas movies means to a lot of america um, so That's cool that I get to be a part of that. Um, but I mean everybody loves christmas Yeah, except for I don't know. Do you all love?
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_03] Yeah, I love it. I love christmas amelia. I promise I do so it's just hallmark. You don't yeah It's the the films that are really tough sledding. Gotcha. Yeah, and it's just him Just yeah, I love it. No, we love the grumpy one. There's no doubt about it. Yeah, okay. Okay, but christmas we can get on
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_05] Yes, absolutely for sure. Yeah, I think it's that thing of like and and in so many cities, you know We don't get guaranteed snow and we don't get all that magic that comes in these special places That right now are vancouver canada in the summertime when we make fake snow, but Yeah, uh It it just it feels good to
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_03] Indulge in christmas. Yeah, it sure does way to put it. So let me ask you this. Uh, you you said that this homework The homework role was foreign to you So how did you first get hooked up with hallmark? Like what was your first role? How did you get that opportunity? Was it an audition? Did you just get asked to be on on a show or what was it?
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_05] No, I haven't actually i'm trying to think back It was an audition because they weren't familiar with me and I think I think it was a movie called the music teacher was the first one I did with them with annie pots Wow, um And uh, and it was I wasn't I was I was annie was the lead and then I was the next female lead I think that was the first one if I remember correctly, uh, i'm sure The hallmarkies will correct you. Yeah, they will That's gonna say
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_05] um, but and and then from there I think pretty quickly after I joined the um postables family
[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_00] Mm-hmm. Yep as a redhead. Yeah
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, uh, oh no, wait I had done an episode of signed seal delivered while when it was a series Remember how it started as a series and then it went to movies I did an episode of course you guys do you watch it Uh, I watch I I did an episode of that as a guest star and then they called me back and said Do you want to come back on the show as a as a as like a recurring role? But a different one and I said can you do that? Yeah
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_05] And hallmark you sure can yeah, they were like, you know what if we just put a wig on you
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_02] They did it. They've done it before and all sorts of shows family family matters They brought in a whole new mom. So right. Yeah, perfect
[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_05] Just yeah, we brought a new dog in chesapeake shores. Just don't comment on it, right? Like just
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00] Like it's not there the whole time thing. Yes, exactly. That's right
[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_05] So I think that's where it all started and then shortly thereafter came chesapeake shores and then and then The rest history. That's great
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_01] So now Is there like an audition process for you that you have to go through with these or do they just kind of call you up and
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_03] It's all for only let's be honest I see corrected
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_05] Uh, yeah, by now luckily I don't have to drag myself to through the audition process with with this network Which is which is always such a nice relief. Yeah, I always love asking this question
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_02] Uh, one of our first interviews was Chris Palaha Um, and uh, he told us the worst He is the worst He's terrible You're right Um, and he told us about how, uh, he filmed a movie a couple years ago They brought him in right after thanksgiving. They filmed it in like a week And then it aired like two weeks later like super fast bang bang bang What's the fastest I I know they call you up and you're on set like three days later What's yeah, what's the quickest? Uh, I find out to it actually airing on tv. Yeah
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_05] It was probably the one I did last year Was it yeah last year I did um Christmas bells are ringing that's the one yeah
[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_03] In your defense the name we could not for the life of us remember the name either. We looked it up beforehand Yeah, okay you were boston you go to cape cod and you're a photographer
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_02] That's that's it should have been like picture picture me this christmas Yes, that's right, uh, you could
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_05] Well, talk to them about you That's right i've been trying
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_00] I've been trying
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_05] Um, yeah, I think that was last year. I think we finished filming in november sometime and then aired in december
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_02] That's amazing. That's amazing. Yeah. Yeah, you can't even tell you two was really good
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_05] All those visual effects
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_03] There's a there's a gift wrapping scene in that movie amelia and you may not know the answer to this but Yeah, they basically say that somebody wrapped an absurd amount of gifts in in an hour like I think I say a hundred hundred yeah, and what we're talking. Uh, what is that in 60 minutes?
[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_01] Yeah, no, it's over a gift a minute
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_03] That's that's a you were wrapping more than one gift a minute now in my in an hour I could not successfully wrap a gift I don't think singular unless I just had a bag and tissue paper which leads us to our question
[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_01] What's the most you've ever wrapped in an hour?
[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_03] No, that's not that's no the question is was that really in the script that way a hundred in an hour?
[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_05] Is that is that a real thing you are Are you insinuating that I would have made up that line? I'm wait a minute
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_03] I'm insinuating that There's no way anyone could wrap a hundred in an hour and so either idea was you did it because the screenwriter put it in there Or you decided to ad lib it which either way. I'm just interested
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_04] Yeah, you pulled it off. I did not ad lib that line. Okay, that was in the script got it
[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_02] Uh, what's what is it like? So One of the things that a lot of the uh, the actors and the actresses we've talked to Say that they love so much about homework is that uh They they have this beautiful thing where they keep going back to the same actors and actresses and that's why people keep watching them What is it like for you as an actress to to continue to do a hallmark movies? Does it does it is it still fresh for you? Are you still loving it? Is it still something that you're like man? I love doing these these movies
[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, because you know why It's it's just fun You get to go to work and have fun every day for 15 days The hours are ridiculous. It's a very short amount of time to shoot a movie Which means we don't get a lot of time With each scene hence why sometimes lines like a hundred minutes A minute pass by your foggy brain but but You know I I love all kinds of acting
[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_05] But there are jobs that are exhausting because it's very heavy material. It's very dark. It's requires a lot of Research whatever whatever and and um, and this is an opportunity to just go and Laugh with people great people all day long
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_03] We hear like nothing but like everyone we talked to from homework is amazing and like this is the guy that doesn't like the movies and And nitpicks them and stuff, but everyone's great. Everyone's super nice. They always for chris palata. Yeah Except for chris obviously Yeah, um And everybody comes on the show they always say super nice things and so You don't have to give me specifics just a yes or no Has there ever been a hallmark experience or person that has been more of a tough slog that has been more of a tough like man?
[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_03] This feels more like work like just has there ever been one?
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_05] Yes, okay
[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_03] That's fair. Okay. Yeah
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_05] Different different chemistry, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah And that doesn't make it good or bad, but like some people are just not meant to necessarily spend a lot of time together. Yeah, yeah
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_03] Yeah, I like that answer. And listen, chris, it's not It's not Personal It's not you chris It's not you It's just everything about us You are a tough slog in general
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_02] Right
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_03] You don't know things in a hospital that a cfo should know No, I mean it's pretty I don't know what to tell you
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_02] We just we we just watched hearts of christmas, so it's very fresh That's right We just watched it last week But like he didn't know what a nicky was So and I mean i'm concerned
[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_01] Right
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_05] And i'll tell you this um in real life Chris pa didn't know how to pronounce it
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_03] No, no Did he say niku or something?
[00:16:13] Yeah
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_03] Oh, he's never gonna hear the end of it
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_05] This is we had we had to all and and i'll throw uh, it wasn't just nick. It wasn't just chris It was it was uh Several people that we just needed to make sure knew how to pronounce that
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_03] That's right. Wow Did you do any work like you study nurses or anything before you did the role in hearts of christmas?
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_05] No, sadly I didn't it was again one of those Your cast let's go do this
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah What is like a role that you've done that you've had to or you've gotten the uh, you've had the time to be able to dive into And learn more about uh, maybe an occupation or a type of character before filming?
[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_05] Um, I did a tv show Uh, a canadian tv show called arctic air Um About I it was it's loosely based on the ice pilots, you know that show Uh of the there's like ice truckers and then there's ice pilot Okay. All right Yeah, they're they're all they're these amazing guys up in in the northwest territories in canada and um Um, and that's who we'd lose the base to show on so it's it we were all pilots flying dc3s and and I was a helicopter pilot and um
[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_05] That obviously required knowing kind of which buttons push
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_00] Uh-huh
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_05] When you're on the plane So we had a we had somebody with us at all times and that was One of the most epic filming experiences i've ever had
[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_01] Wow So yeah Growing up you had a lot of chances to travel sea across the entire world I mean, it's it's really incredible where you've lived all those things So let me ask you How does just your childhood and growing up visiting all these places kind of carry over into your acting? Like do you bring any of those experiences and and does that help you in any way?
[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, I think for me what My biggest gift in traveling so much and seeing so much of the world is that I feel like everybody We're all the same And it it doesn't matter where you're from what you have what you don't have At the root of it all we're all the same So I attack every character with that Everybody wants love everybody wants To do well and to be seen as doing the best they know how and
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_05] and um And that's That for sure and then Um Yeah, I don't know
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_03] Let me ask let me ask you this Uh, so normally in these movies and in really all movies We can usually I can usually spot an accent of someone who's doing an american accent But not from the united states of america I had no idea that you were not native like From from the united states Yeah, thank you So how did you like what's the process of honing in that american accent? Um, clearly your english is great. That's not an issue You you probably had to speak it a lot growing up
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_03] But what's the process of like? Is it just listening to american accents and just fine-tuning it or or how do you get to where because it's it's It's very well done Yeah, I cannot I did not know until listening to you now talking in in standard English like how you'd normally talk I would not never have believed that you were not from the united states of america So how does how does that work? What's that process like?
[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_05] Well, thank you. It's funny. I have so many people who I will talk to for hours on end and then eventually come out But i'm danish and they'll be like, oh That's the I could tell um Anyway, uh, you know what? I it's not on purpose. I think uh growing up everywhere. I just I I have an ear for languages can't do math to save my life but languages and accents just kind of Just kind of happened. So I when I started in english-speaking school
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_05] I was in grade eight And it was a predominantly like most of the teachers were american and I think I loved beverly hills 90210 and I just wanted to sound like those guys
[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_03] I mean, come on who doesn't yeah, who doesn't am I right?
[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, I like to think that there's somebody from denmark that's listening to this podcast and just and it's just like man I want to sound like those guys
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_05] Man, probably my mom. Oh Oh, yeah Um
[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_02] So going back to to homework, uh Is there an actress or an actor that is in a lot of these movies that you haven't gotten to work with yet that you're like Secretly hoping one day you'll get the the call or the email and it's like you're in with this
[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_05] Honestly, I would love and it's only I would love to work with pascal hutton Yeah, um, we do you guys know who that is? I have no idea No, no clue Okay, you'll go you'll google her you'll know who she is But it's mostly because we did arctic air together and so we worked together for three years. We also look like sisters Oh, yeah She's one of my closest friends and I just think we would have a blast
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_03] Yeah, getting to do one of these what about uh, just dream job in acting like not necessarily hallmark So like dream director to work for or movie or or or a scene partner or whatever you got any of that?
[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah, I mean right now I feel like director wise In tv land I would like or to film he's brilliant in both places, but jean-marc valet He's doing big little lies and sharp objects. I think he is a brilliant storyteller and uh
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_03] Sharp objects was unreal good
[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_05] Unreal, did you know that they're doing a season two? I didn't know how
[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_03] I don't know that I read the book. It's what I know I've not watched pretty little liars
[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_02] You'd be surprised what you can do when there's money on the line. That's true
[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_03] He has such a distinct voice like he does like you can always tell when he's directed something That's a really that's a great answer. Yeah Yeah, if you're listening jean-marc like what are you waiting on like yeah, amelia is here around Like come on that's right and also come on the pot. That's right. Yeah, sure why not? I don't know. Yeah, we'll talk about homer do you have a christmas movie coming up amelia anything you could share with us?
[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_05] I don't but I do have well, I won't know I don't know what it is yet, but I think i'm gonna go do one that's not christmas, but sounds more like summer uh
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_03] Soon I'd get on it pretty quick
[00:22:09] [SPEAKER_02] You know a lot about the movie so far A lot of info is leaked out I know I mean we're we're still we're holding on to hope for that's right christmas. They've not announced them all
[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_05] You never know it's true and it's a far far go to november. We have to like the end of november to film
[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_02] That's right. That's right. It's just uh, like, you know, I love love hallmark christmas movies And I and I can enjoy them throughout the rest of the year, but they're just not They're not the same to me. There's something about the extra Uh christmas cheer that lends itself to to hallmark movies Yeah, I agree. So i'm hoping for christmas for you
[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_05] So do you love them just as much in july? I'm curious uh, the christmas movies in july? Yeah, yeah
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, yeah, I do uh, we were watching them, uh, just the other day and uh, I cheered and cheered in the middle of the movie
[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_03] Yeah, did I did I cheer during hearts of christmas? Uh, I don't remember if you did I think you raised your hands in the air like this
[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, you do about this train. Uh, so it's only because it's fresh on my mind Oh my god. [00:24:07] [SPEAKER_03] We have now do you since we're since we're doing this do you think that you're the character that you play jenny? like what was how in the world could she have worked with alice for as long as she did? Yeah without alice knowing that she was born in the hospital or what her real name was like didn't she hire jenny?
[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_05] Like yeah, jenny was my yeah Yeah, jenny was my middle name and you didn't go by your last name either hold up

[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_05] Well, so here's my question that I I can't remember but you guys might are you sure that it was the same hospital and that
[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_03] Your nurse didn't go to come from somewhere else. That's a good question. They said alice has been at that hospital for over 30 years
[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_05] It was definitely the same hospital. Well, i'm i'm getting on 60. So
[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_03] You look great Yeah Yeah
