Gilmore Girls - Season 2 Episode 15 - Lost and Found

Something else that's hard to believe, Brandon, is occasionally we batch record these. And feel back to Kurt a little. Chad, how's it going? First of all, Chad. Hi everybody, I'm doing great, thank you. Great to see you buddy. This is our first recording post-Bramble Fest. History was made, obviously.

[00:00:52] How did you feel about your performance at Bramble Fest, Chad? We have a few notes, but I'd like to hear from you first. Did you listen back to the tape? How did you feel like you did? I listened back, I watched back. I tell you, it was such a fun, high good vibes event that that was the most important thing to me. Did I fully watch the episode and have notes on it? Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. But I loved doing it, I loved the people. And it was just so fun. I would have kept going. I wish we were batch recording with a live audience. That would be awesome.

[00:01:16] It was so much fun. I will say, my one note, if we do this again next year, which I can't imagine why we wouldn't do it again, should start a little earlier. I think we were all a little sleepy. I think we were all a little sleepy for that episode. Well, Chad, you told me you got to Bramble Fest early and you told me like, well, you know, somebody wanted me to, or I mentioned something about watching the episode. I was like, no, no, no, it's integrity. I'm not watching it until we all watch it on Friday night. And I was like, Chad, Brandon and I have already watched this episode.

[00:01:43] And you were like, oh, really? And I was like, yeah, man, I can't watch out there with a live audience and not get distracted. Like I watch it first and take notes. And you, it was like, you were fully betrayed. You were just like, well, what do you mean you've already watched the episode? I had no idea. My wife wanted to watch it the week before. I'm like, no, we are going to watch it live with everyone. I will not watch it until I'm at Bramble Fest. Then I half watch it because I know you guys watched it before. And then when the live watching came in, I'm talking, I'm chatting, I'm kibitzing, I'm having a great time. I'm half watching. So we made it through. It was a fun show.

[00:03:07] I don't even know how you're, what do you, can you give me any, what you're thinking right now? I mean, so he's saying along with Lorelei and Rory? He or she. He, then, she, and she. We don't know. We have no idea. Also, go ahead, go ahead. No, being one of the hottest Gilmore girls has been my long-term goals since we started this show. This is amazing. Yeah, I feel like I've made it. What was that last part? You give Vogue models a run for their money? I believe so. Let me read it again. Pretty good. This guy is on par with Vogue models.

[00:05:30] Bran, before we get into it, I have a question. This is a follow-up from Bramble Fest because we may have to have Dan take his turn around because I might have gotten a spoiler inadvertently in my gift bag, believe it or not. And I will explain this. Do you want me to take my ear? You may have to. Yeah. You may have to. Right now? Now's the time? Yes. Do it. Okay. We'll be fast. Bran, you guys so lovingly gave me a gift bag with a lot of different things and you gave me – That's all Sheila Calloway. She puts so much work into those bags and does an amazing job every year.

[00:06:00] And so many times, Sheila's so in the know that there will be something in that bag that's a reference to something that we said once that I'm like, I don't remember this. Right. And that's the care and the love of Sheila Calloway. But go ahead. Well, this – and I agree with that because it was really lovely and really personalized. But this might be a Sheila spoiler because I got this – and if you're a new listener and don't want to hear a spoiler, I don't know if this is a spoiler or not. But I got a dragonfly ornament with a sticker that says Dragonfly Inn.

[00:06:28] Now, my presumption is this is a major spoiler that Lorelei and Suki opened in and it's called the Dragonfly Inn, which I have no idea about. I wish I didn't see this. So don't tell me. I won't tell you, but I will say that all of the hosts did get – there's like stuff that everybody got and there's personalized elements. And I won't tell you whether or not everybody got that or not. Interesting. Okay, good. That's all I need to know. Okay.

[00:06:55] Gilmore Girls Season 2 Episode 15 is what we're talking about today. Lost and Found is the title. Excited to dive into this one. February 26, 2002 is when this episode came out and it went a little something like this. Lorelei was cleaning her gutters when she hurt her hands. She put a bandage on it but refuses to go to the doctor.

[00:07:22] They get to Luke's, but Luke is nowhere to be found. To make matters worse, Caesar is cooking. Ah, gross. Caesar. So Lorelei goes up to check on him and encourage him to come down and make them pancakes. The place is a mess because Jess's mom finally sent the rest of Jess's stuff and now Luke can't find his supply ledger. It's a mess.

[00:07:49] Lorelei finds it and holds it captive until he comes down to make them pancakes. That night, Lorelei tells Rory – Lorelei and Rory are walking to get supplies for movie nights. They walk to Luke's, walk by Luke's, and she sees him sitting there inside, sad, drinking a beer all by himself in the dark. Turns out he's watching a tiny TV. He just needs a little space from Jess.

[00:08:15] She encourages him to potentially get a bigger apartment, but Luke isn't having it. He asks Lorelei if Jess could help clean out her gutters for her because he'd get him out of here and give him a little extra money. Lorelei doesn't say yes right away, but on the way home, Rory says, I thought that you were going to give Jess a chance. You should hire him. After a bit more guilt tripping, Lorelei says yes.

[00:08:40] But then she asks Rory, why is it so important to you for me to like him? Rory comes up with some excuse, but Lorelei is wise to her. Luke goes upstairs and freaks out on Jess over his mess, and he says, We're moving tomorrow! After looking for apartments, Jess goes to Rory's to get started on the gutters. Cool guy Jess flips her a book when she opens the door – cool move, bro – and comments that her hair is different.

[00:09:09] Lorelei tries to make small talk with Jess, but he's not having it. When he goes outside, Rory comes out and asks him why he doesn't even try to get along with her mom. And he's like, I don't see why I should. What's the big deal? And she's like, if you care about me at all, you'll try. And he's like, who says I care about you? Classic Jess. Rory leaves to go and hang out with Dean at the book fundraiser thing. Dean is bored out of his mind because he's never read a book.

[00:09:38] He's like, I want to go see the Lord of the Rings again, which annoys her. He then sees that she doesn't have her bracelet on the bracelet that he gave her. She lies and says that she took it off because of a rash, but we'll put it on later. When in reality, she lost it, and Jess is holding it hostage. Lorelei invites Jess down off the roof to eat lunch together. At first, he says no, but then he remembers Rory, and so he comes down and really puts in an effort.

[00:10:07] Just then, Rory comes barging in, freaking out that she's lost the bracelet. Luke calls Lorelei about the injustices of apartment renting. He says that he needs a second opinion ASAP and asks her to come. She immediately leaves work, you know, as friends do. She looks at a really, they look at a really nice apartment, and she says, even if Jess goes home, you'll want this apartment. What if you meet someone? What if you fall in love with somebody?

[00:10:37] She finally talks him into it, but then he finds out the worst possible news about this particular apartment in many of the other apartments around town. Taylor is the owner. Luke says, I'm out. Taylor then runs after him, saying that he's considering buying the flower shop next door to the diner, but he needs him to take down the hardware store sign that he still has up on the diner, because it confuses people. Luke says, it was my dad's, and I'm not taking it down, and then he storms off.

[00:11:07] Rory gets home and is sad about the bracelet. Can't find it anywhere. She talks to Jess about it, and he encourages her to look in her room one more time. She walks in and immediately finds it under her bed. Very excited about that. Lorelei goes outside to pay Jess for a job well done. She then accuses Jess of stealing the bracelet, because she caught him leaving her room 30 minutes before the bracelet mysteriously reappeared. He denied it and says, whatever.

[00:11:37] And she says, don't whatever me, you little jerk, like the uncle in Home Alone. She gives him a lecture about taking the bracelet and telling him that it only hurt Rory, because it's the most precious thing that she owns. He says, if it's so precious to her, why did it take her two weeks to notice that it was gone? I wouldn't start calling him son yet, he says. And then he storms off.

[00:12:04] Luke then comes banging on the door and freaks out about Taylor. He says he bought the building next to the diner in a fit of blind rage. She's like, well, actually, you know, it's not a bad thing to own the building. You'll own your building. This is great. And she talks him off the ledge. She says, OK, I'll think about I'll think about if I want to keep this or not.

[00:12:29] She asks Luke if Jess ever talks to him about Rory. And he's like, no, not really. But it would be great if they got together, wouldn't it? She'd be such a great influence on him. Luke then goes home, takes a sledgehammer out and bangs a hole through the wall and tells Jess, that's your room. And now, my friends, was Gilmore Girls Season 2. Episode 50. So this show is Gilmore the Marrier.

We're talking about Gilmore Girls Season 2, Episode 15, Lost and Found today. A lot to get to in this episode. We're going to start with a hot take. As we're going to share exactly how we felt about this episode. We do not hold back. I want to start with the hottest Gilmore girl and the hottest taker. Chad, Chad, what do you think about Lost and Found?

[00:13:53] We should have a t-shirt that just ranks the three of us as hottest Gilmore Girls and it's Chad, Brantan. Yeah. Where does Lorelai and Rory fit on that list? I don't know. But we're the top three, clearly. Yeah. We're definitely the top three. Of the Gilmore Girls, we're the three hottest. Right out of the pages of Vogue, the three of us. That's what he does. I'm fine being third on that list. Oh, I think I'm third. No. Chad's definitely one. Well, yeah. I don't like this conversation. Let's go to the hot takes. Chad, what do you think about the episode?

[00:14:23] You should do some modeling or commercial stuff, Chad. Something on camera. I know. I'm shy. I'm shy. So on this episode, I was a little worried because it was kind of like a slow build. I was like, is this going to be one of those episodes? We're dealing with the gutter cleaning. She hurts her hand. All these things. But boy, oh boy, did this episode deliver. This is a really good one. This is up until now, Jess has been largely a one dimensional character. Right. And he's been the bad boy. He causes trouble.

[00:14:50] He pushes Dean's buttons, occasionally reads a book as they jackhammer in. And we know, but this is the first time I felt like we really had some depth to him and some thoughts. So we're in the episode. I'm trying to read my notes. That's always trouble. Okay. So we're dealing with Rory's bracelet, right? That was a big thing. That was a big deal. The Tisket of Taskin episode. That's when she lost it. Yeah. That she lost it when they had the picnic. And then he stole it. He actively stole the bracelet. Yeah. That one. Yeah.

[00:15:18] Instead of just handing it back to her like a non-sociopath. Normal person. Right. Yeah. He kept it maybe for later leverage. Who knows, right? To get closer to her later. But he doesn't throw the bracelet away or destroy it because we didn't know what happened to it until this point. But he kept it. So it's like, did he keep it because he has some care? He knew it would mean something to Rory. Did he keep it because it affords leverage for him over her or for a future situation? But because he doesn't automatically return it, he keeps it.

[00:15:48] And she doesn't even notice for two weeks that it's gone. Also for a wrist. That's a crazy weight what? For two weeks. Yes, it is. You wear something every day and you don't notice it's gone for two weeks? Get out of here. How little do you have to care about that thing? Right? Seriously, you would notice like anything. I don't care if anything happens to this watch. If I wasn't wearing it one day, I would notice that I wasn't wearing it. Right. Like it has no sentimental value at all. I would notice immediately.

[00:16:17] Especially the first one given. Yeah, I think what they're trying to get us to believe there is that she is so preoccupied, perhaps thinking about a certain other boy that she doesn't notice the bracelets that her boyfriend gave her is missing. But yeah, I would probably miss something that was on my wrist every day. But what do we know? Right. Well, so that was it for me. That made the whole episode.

[00:16:45] So it was like, finally, because we hear team justice and that. And maybe Dan and I, we weren't fully getting it because we don't have the full knowledge of the episode. This series we'll talk about. But now he's more of a fleshed out character. And whether you like him or not, this is the episode to me where he became a more compelling character, more dynamic, less one dimensional. I agree 100% with that. I man, this episode rules. It's so much fun. I agree. It starts off slow.

[00:17:12] Like you're this episode starts and you're like, all right, what's what's going to happen here? But then when you see Jess walk up to the house and you like him and Lorelai play so well off each other. Every time they are having a conversation, just the two of them must see TV must see TV. And the big question is why keep the bracelets, Jess?

[00:17:43] To see how much of a chance he has. And leverage over her maybe for some reason. It's very disturbing. It is. But like what is. I share some of his sentiments, which I'll get to in a second. But keeping that bracelet is something a disturbing human being would do. Yeah. That is not someone who's not well. What was his intentions with it if this hadn't happened? Like if he wasn't there that day and he didn't overhear Rory barge in and be like, I lost the bracelet. That's right.

[00:18:12] And, you know, maybe he just thought that it was. He'd add to his collection of things he's taken from girls. I don't know if this makes it any better. But maybe he thought. He didn't know that it was from Dean. He just thought it was just an article. That makes it worse in my opinion. I think that if he knows it's from Dean, that helps. If he doesn't think it's from Dean and it's just something she wears, he's just keeping it, giving a little sniff every night.

[00:18:41] That's worse, Brandon. It's way worse. What you've described is a worse timeline than I want to be in. Okay. Jess is at home with the bracelet. Just give me the good stuff. I mean, but that is what it seems to be because he hears how big of a deal this is because of who gave it to her. And then he feels compelled to throw it back under her bed so that she finds it. After he knows she's looking all day. What? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was a jerk.

[00:19:10] Shelby in the chat says he keeps it because it reminds him of her. While he can't date her because she's with Dean, he can have this one thing. Shelby, do you hear yourself? Right. That's a sweet take. That's her thing. He can have this one thing. All right, Buffalo Bill. Come it down. No. No. No. This is pure. It's either a way for him to get back and close to her or to have something over her head and over Dean's head more importantly.

[00:19:37] What you don't know is Jess is a big snoozy-loosies guy. If you, finders keepers, losers leapers, snoozy-loos, I found it. It's mine now. If there's something you can do about it. That's tough. But all that to say, really like this episode, you get a really great back and forth between Lorelai and Jess. You get a fantastic back and forth between Luke and Taylor, which I live for those conversations.

[00:20:05] And the end of this episode is really fun. Like Luke deciding, you know what? I bought it. It's mine now. Sledgehammer, this sucker. Great ending of the episode. Luke kills it. That scene on the street was so great. I mean, that was so good. The back and forth. And then the whole thing where he does the sledgehammer and then he ends it with, what was it? Let's hold hands and skip later. That was great. He threw it back at Jess's face. Great. Yeah, it was awesome. Great, great episode. I love this one. Dano? This episode's amazing.

[00:20:35] It's as good an episode as I've seen without Suki in it, or Paris for that matter. So two of my three faves probably, neither in this episode. But no Richard and Emily, probably another reason it's pretty good. But that's either here nor there at this moment. Listen, we, you know, Chad and I are taking this journey together, right? We're not watching ahead. We're not skipping ahead. We're trying not to get any spoilers. We're doing our best. We're holding hands and skipping later together. I have had it. We're not watching ahead of time. We're not. Unless it's for Bramble Fest, and then we're allowed to.

[00:21:05] I've, I'm done with the, it's hard for me to listen to Dan. And they say Chad, but they're talking to me. I'm pretty sure. It's hard for me to listen to Dan and Chad without proper context comment. I'm done. I'm done with that comment. You leave it. You're wrong. And I'll tell you why is because the proper context is Chad and I, that is we are watching the show. Like everyone watched it the first time.

[00:21:31] Like I shouldn't think things that haven't happened yet that would change my frame of reference on any given character. Like I'm giving you my opinion. Like everyone who watched it on UPN and CW or wherever it aired all the way back in 2002 because I don't know any better. My context in this particular case where we're giving opinions on a television show, listener. Up to the point we've seen. Just up to this point.

[00:21:58] My context is the right one in this case because the first time you watched it, nobody came along and was like, well, I've seen the whole thing and you're wrong about this. I don't know. And I say all that to say comments are while you're wrong. There's a chance I'm wrong about Luke. This is, this is good. Luke stuff. This is now I still think he's kind of insufferable and not the best for Lorelai. Having said that, if we're going to get more of this, Luke, right? Bring it on.

[00:22:28] Because in episode three, he transforms the diner to a soup kitchen. So a lot of people, when you say you don't like Luke, we didn't know that. I just love, I love Luke not being able to make a simple decision. I love Luke and Taylor in an argument. Absolutely great television. And while I still don't think that he and Lorelai belong together, their banter in this episode is fantastic. And I think for what it's worth, and I don't hear a lot of raves about Scott Patterson, the

[00:22:56] human being, but on this show, he understands the character and its dialogue as written, I think as good as anyone on this show. And so he typically doesn't talk much, but this week he got to, and I think he destroyed. And when, and then we pivot, that's plot one or one a, and then the other plot one or one a is Jess and Rory. I'm not team Jess yet, but he, I, I agree with what Chad said. This episode, he is a much more compelling character than he's been so far.

[00:23:26] I think both in how he tackles the dialogue in his actions during the episode and his crazy psychopathy, like just the, the craziness of taking a souvenir of a teenage girl and keeping it in your house is just bonkers new, new, but I gotta be honest, compelling, compelling stuff. He's never been compelling to me. He's compelling in this episode. Just compelling. Take more stuff. No.

[00:23:55] Take more stuff. Luke, I'm not one over yet, but I can see, you know, Rory not knowing that Jess is a weird dude by taking this bracelet and just keeping it under his pillow every night or whatever he's doing with it. Uh, I can see Jess and her connection with, or, uh, Rory and her connection with Jess. And I see him as a compelling character. And I think he did a great job in this episode.

[00:24:21] And then this is the best Luke plot line that we've had so far. Uh, so I love this episode. I think this episode, uh, is, but it might be a top fiver for me so far out of 30. This is top five for me. Really, really good episode. Yeah. Not bad. Yeah. Yeah. Too bad. This wasn't the Bramble Fest one. This is a lot of fun. A lot to talk about. I'm trying to think if, uh, in high school, if a girl that I had a crush on dropped something, like, well, how would I handle it? Hmm. Right.

[00:24:50] Would you, you would probably hand it back to her and be a good guy. I'd like to think so. The one thing you wouldn't do is just hold on to it. And wait to decide. For a rainy day. Right. That's a crazy thing to do. Yeah. You might keep it. You might keep it overnight and the next morning go, hey, when you left, I was cleaning up or I went back or something and I found this. Like, you might do that to having a chance to talk to her the next day. That would be the most I would bring in high school. I would say I was walking back from, you know, I always help out at the puppy shelter

[00:25:17] and I was helping that somebody cross the street needed help. And after I did that, you know, put away their groceries, I bent down and there was your bracelet. And that's how, you know, that's how it played. I will say this. Like if we forget the bracelet thing, Jess is more compelling. I still think he's an a-hole, but I think you're supposed to think that. I mean, like this guy just goes into the, like, we'll get to in the way what, but like his actions have not yet been anywhere near above any board of any kind, but I think that might be the appeal.

[00:25:50] We don't get a lot of, like, backstory so far for some of these characters. Like very bits and pieces, like even Luke, like what makes Luke the way that he is? Like we get little bits and pieces of it, but like. The problem, I think my problem with Luke is, is that I grew up in two small towns in my life. I was born in one. That's right. You'll die one? That's the bit I do on Deck the Hallmark, but here I'll tell you, no thanks. Oh, my God.

[00:26:17] I grew up in two very small towns and went to two very small. If you grow up in two small towns, is it because it's become a big town? No, one until I was 10 years old and then moved to another one, different one. But both of them under 3,000 people. Right, the job was so small town, it provided little opportunity. Yeah, well, you get it. And I've gone back on occasion to those towns, and the people that I've gone back to see,

[00:26:42] or I've seen when I've gone back, are the exact same as they were the 20 or 30 years, you know, whatever. And I just, I know 50 Lukes, and I don't think Lorelai should marry any of them. Okay. So like for me, like I just like, he's just not impressive to me in any form or fashion. I just, I don't know. So there's that. All right. Wow. Okay. Speaking of Luke, at one point, we don't have to do this episode because we're already running a little long,

[00:27:08] but we do need to get back to way early on in this series, Ryan Cook, your friend, Cook, Cook, Cook and Luke. Ryan Cook from your small town. Yeah. I mean, you know, but I'm just saying another time. Another time. I don't think there's much of an update there. Let's get to all the feels, a favorite moment, line, et cetera, from the episode. Chad, anything stick out to you? I had some lines and some feels. So Lorelai walks into, Lorelai, Lorelai. Are you okay?

[00:27:38] Any show after dark, I have trouble with, I think. You just laughed at the word Lorelai. I don't know what you want from me. It was funny, you know? So she walks into Luke's room, the apartment. It's a total mess. Looks around, everything's disheveled. And she just goes, this is what I always thought the inside of my head would look like. And I just thought that was such a funny line, so well written, so thought out. And you could see that being her head. So that to me was funny. But here was the main feel. Lorelai agrees. This is something we've all touched on.

[00:28:07] Dan, you've been most vociferous about. Make a move, Luke. No kidding. She gives this discussion about the apartment. And she goes, look, dude, it's time to move on, to get a bed big enough for more than one person, to have room for another person in your life. Make a move, think to the future, et cetera. Something we've been saying. Lorelai's saying it to him. He's a 35-year-old, 12-year-old. Like, it's just ridiculous. She's 100% right.

[00:28:32] There were, like, the fact that she would show up for him like that and pretend to be his wife in a really funny bit. Just left work. Just left work.

[00:29:02] And he washed his hands. And he washed for, like, half a second. That grossed me out. That's more of a wait-what, I guess. But that was a sanitary feel for me. [00:30:32] Oh, when he looked for the bracelet. Oh, it's really funny. And he's supposed to go look for the bracelet. And then she says, will you cover the desk for me? And he says, yes. And then, you know, he says something and she's like, what? And he's like, I'll say that I'll cover the desk. But how will you know if I'm actually doing it? That's so great. Classic Michelle just starting stuff for no reason. It's great. I love him. He was great. In his short lines. Yeah. I do not crawl around in my Donna Cowan suit. Very good. Very good. Really good.

[00:31:03] And 65 cents. Like, I like he's I was easy. All the feels. I'm just telling you right now. The character I was the most wrong about was Kirk. The first two times is on screen. And you just had a smile just a mile wide on your face. I'm like, Brian's so ridiculous. This character, he's great. It's a charity book thing. And the cost of the book is 65 cents. And he starts the bidding at 50 cents. And it is so funny.

[00:31:33] And he just never gives up the bid. And that is only second in this episode to Taylor and Luke talking when Luke realizes that Taylor will be his landlord. And Taylor's eyes go crazy when he talks about how he hasn't bought the whole town yet. Like, you know what he bought in the whole town? He's like, well, not yet. And his eyes just get all crazy. So great. And then Luke calls him a fascist. And he goes, well. The parks. He goes, I'm not a fascist.

[00:32:02] But you have to admit, they had really great parks. That was great. That was great. Yeah. Like, bro. Fantastic stuff here. I mean, top notch. Even if the rest of the episode sucked. Things in this episode maybe didn't make sense to us. We just made us pause, go, wait, what? I'm going to start with you, Chad. I have one, and it could just be me. Well, I have a few, but the first one, Michelle. Going back to Michelle. I rewound it, and I asked my wife to get her opinion as well. On this episode, to me, he seemed like he had much less of a French accent. He did. Than in previous episodes. Oh, you got that, Chad? No, no, no.

[00:33:01] Chad is correct. Huh. And I don't know where he's from. I would assume he's doing an accent. He's from Montreal, and he does have an accent. So he definitely downshifted from like fifth to fourth, at least, and then fifth to third here. I heard it. And I was wondering if that was a note from the producers. Like, people, you funny lines when people just can't understand you. Or maybe he hadn't been in an episode, aside from doing the thing in the hoodie where he helps get the CD to play.

[00:33:28] I mean, so like he hasn't really been in the hotel in weeks and weeks. So who knows? Who knows when this was filmed? Okay. So he's all right. That was interesting. Also, my weight was, Jess has music blaring. Because of course, when you read heavy literature, you just have music blaring. That's the best way to do it. That's what you do. And then you fall asleep with the book under your arm, the music blaring. I was like, come on. I mean, we get it. You read books. But nobody reads books with like heavy metal going. You fall asleep.

[00:33:57] And by contrast, you have Dean boarded a book fair. Like, we have to make these two polar opposites. That was a big weight loss. Him saying when he woke him up and then he said, I can't fall asleep without the music. I was like, get out of here. My thing with that was I had friends who would listen to music right there. Having said that, you can't fall asleep with the music off. You have three lights on. Yeah. There's like a spotlight on him. And he's like, I need the music to fall asleep. What is going on there?

[00:34:26] That song sucked. That song was real bad. Why is it heavy metal? I almost hit mute during that song. I'm just like, get off my lawn. Let's just rack it. Yeah. There was one other thing. Oh, just a seasonal thing. All of a sudden, we went from winter a few episodes ago to spring. And then at the beginning, Lorelai's walking with like gloves on. Of course, Hallmark style. Her jacket's unzipped. But I'm like, are we back into winter? Do they care at all? There's no time that they care. No, they don't. They're all out of order. Yeah. I will say that is the... New England. They just wear that.

[00:34:56] This show just wears it on its sleeve. Like, I think that is, to them, a feature, not a bug. These are all snippets of a day in the life, so to speak. Like, all of these episodes, they are building to something, but never really linearly. Like, they are fine just plucking an episode and just putting it in in between winter and fall and spring and just mixing them all up. And they don't... Like, they're not trying to hide that. But you're right.

[00:35:23] Like, the picnic scene, obvious spring. Right. And it is obviously cold. But this episode very clearly does come after the picnic episode. Right, right. 100%. Because of the bracelet. So it's not like, oh, we can put this one after because there's no... Like, there are connecting fibers to those two episodes. Very important things that happened in the spring episode and now it's cold again. But you know what? It's northeast.

[00:35:51] Sometimes you get a late cold front and then you get a bundle back up. And that's just like... You don't like the weather. Wait 15 minutes. You said it. You said it. I don't know who this guy is, but I love him. Yeah, I like that guy. I got two. One is... A thing that's always bothered me here in these early seasons is they continue to push that Luke is a healthy eater. This is the craziest thing. I just don't believe it. No.

[00:36:20] I don't believe that this guy, this small town diner owner... No way, no way. ...is a health nut. Right. He does nothing aside from tell us that he's a health nut. Like, I don't... You never see a smoothie. Never see him with a smoothie. Never see him eating just a salad. But it's all... It's just constantly like him looking down on you because you're eating french fries or drinking coffee or whatever.

[00:36:50] And they keep doing stuff and telling us and saying things like, oh, Luke, the health nut over there. No. No. I just don't buy that this guy is a health nut. When I heard it this time, it just rang so false. Yes. Like, the guy who's in the small town that runs the diner and wears the Army Navy store jacket every day with the backwards hat... No exercise ever. He's never exercising. He's never at a gym. Yeah. He's never out walking or running.

[00:37:19] He's flipping pancakes and serving burgers and fries. Yeah. And I'll say this. If this small town diner owner is a health nut, I don't want to go to your diner. No kidding. Sir. No. Right. If your tummy's not sticking out of your shirt a little bit while you're flipping those burgers, I don't want to eat it. There's a... I'll say it. You got to walk the walk if you're going to own a diner. If you ever meet an owner of a local pizza establishment, a local barbecue establishment,

[00:37:48] and they are in shape, you don't need to be there. Just walk out. Like, you got to go somewhere else, man, because they're not even trying their own product. They've decided to not, and that's crazy. Yeah. In what world does Chad and Luke have the same diet? In the world? No. You guys have seen me eat healthy. I don't just say it when I come down. No. Yes. You are. You are... And also, I'm not ever going to be like, we should go eat a really great...

[00:38:17] We've got a really great cheeseburger, and I'm never going to be like, Chad, what do you think? I'm not going to... Yeah. Exactly. That's not going to happen. Right. Wouldn't make sense. Luke proposes he has the best cheeseburger, but he doesn't going to... He's not going to eat that. He doesn't know. Yeah. Well, you know, in small towns, people let you be who you are. That's right. That is a known thing about small towns. Yeah. Big cities, you're all going to be a certain way, but in a small town... That's when you get to freedom. That's right.

[00:38:44] And then my last one is, hey, Luke, if you are annoyed by the use of the word vibe in 2002... I've got bad news for you. Just you wait, buddy. Uh-oh. In 2025, 2026, it's going to be everywhere, and you're going to hate your life. So just buckle up. Enjoy the next 20 years, because it's all downhill here in 2026 with the word vibe. Oh, wait till Luke... I would love an update where influencers come into his diner and they're like, this place is a vibe. This is such a vibe. You know, with their cell phone.

[00:39:13] That would be a funny parody or an update show or whatever. Uh, Dan? Anyway, what's... So Dean and Rory are hanging out for the day, and they're at this outdoor books-like thing where you can buy books for cheap, and it goes to charity. And she has bought a bunch of books, right? She's got stacks over there, and he clearly wants to leave, and she clearly doesn't. And then he realizes he's being a bit of a curmudgeon, and so Dean, in classic Dean fashion, just goes, hey, go back, go out to the astronomy section, whatever.

[00:39:40] But then he says, go look at more books, and then we'll go see Lord of the Rings, and then we'll rent two more movies for the rest of the afternoon. Sport, how long do you think one afternoon is? I know that we have a weird time thing going on in Stars Hollow where, like, sometimes time stands still. There's no way an afternoon can hold all that. There's no way an afternoon can hold bookstore, trip to the theater for any Lord of the Rings

[00:40:09] movie, and then two more movies before nightfall. Not in Alaska. Nowhere can you do all of those things. Doing polar night, you can't do it? No, nowhere can you do all of those things in an afternoon. No way, no how. I'm sorry. I'm not sorry. You know, Lorelai, you never have to wonder what she's thinking. She will tell you, and I think that's awesome. This is as cool and calm a reaction to a random teenage boy snooping around her daughter's bedroom of anything I've ever seen.

[00:40:39] Like, for a guy she doesn't trust, too. And I guess you could make the argument she's doing this because she promised Rory, she blah, blah, blah. Nah, bro. You see a random teenager that you don't trust anyway who is not invited into your home and then went into your daughter's bedroom? Yeah. After she's lost something, what else could he be taking? Like, that's... Like, Lorelai doing nothing there was crazy.

[00:41:09] Yeah. That was crazy. Absolutely crazy to me. Her saying, what was the line, you little jerk? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Really caught me off guard. I was like, oh boy. All right. Don't whatever me, you little jerk. I loved it. That was great. I like Dan using sport. I haven't heard that since the great Gatsby. That was nice. I'm just doing my best. Luke says, hey, why don't you hire Jeff... Jeff? Jeff? Yes! Jeff, are you there? Yes!

And that was interesting because even all of it, she's kind of playing off like their boyfriend, girlfriend when they're in the apartment. But it was still very platonic, very brother, sister. At what point?

[00:44:02] Or does it ever switch to romance and being romantic and get out of the friend's home? We are deeply entrenched at this point. That was my first one. You're with me, right? If you are in a relationship where someone will drop, like she really shouldn't have left her work. Like I don't, she's in a hospitality and she left to do this with you and then like really helped you and talked you through that situation. Like you are very, very close.

[00:44:28] Like you don't do, like these two are very close and it does not feel like it's romantic at all. No, it doesn't feel. Never your brother, sister. But I'm coming around on Luke because I just liked him being exasperated. But as a romantic partner for Lorelai, I don't see it at all. I don't see it even a little bit. I don't see it either. Just really great friends. That's what we've seen so far given our context. That's right. The context that everyone had in 2002. No one, I don't know. Nobody got to strain. Nobody got to binge it.

[00:44:58] We're doing this like everybody, literally everyone that's ever watched the show that it's seen every episode probably did it like this. I mean, you could, you guys could read ahead, I guess, if you want, like, why would I do that? You would do that. Yeah. You could if you really wanted to. Release the Snyder cut. You know what I mean? Zack Snyder did a cut of Gilmore Girls. It's crazy. Awesome. I love that. 10 hour episodes. Unbelievable. I, here's my question. So you mentioned the movie thing, going to see Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings.

[00:45:27] He says, going to see Lord of the Rings again. There's a little conversation here about, I thought you like Lord of the Rings. She said she wanted to see it a million times. Yes. And then she was like, I guess we're being literal. But clearly, like, cool. Like, he doesn't dislike Lord of the Rings, right? And when did this come out? What do you guys think? I want to know, like, what, if Luke was going into, like, a blockbuster, like, what's Luke's type of, not Luke's, I'm sorry, what's Dean's type of movie? Right.

[00:45:57] Like, what, like, what would Dean go, like, is Dean a big Lord of the Rings guy? He doesn't quite strike me as a huge... Everyone was then. Okay. I know that you were a little young for that. Like, here's what happened. This was probably, this episode probably came out... I can tell you exactly what came out. Yeah, I would love to. February, late February of 2002. Of 2002. 2002. So that movie, Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring, came out in, like, December of 2001. Okay. It was a huge deal. Okay. I thought this was maybe later in 2002.

[00:46:26] Those movies came out one a year in December. So, 01, 02, 03, they came out in December. They had filmed them all at once, right? At first, I didn't know you were saying 01. I thought you were going, 01. No, 01, 02, 03, 04. Hit it, Jeff. I was going in this game. They came out once again. 01, 02, 03. Mama Mia. You know, I'm working on a something. So, in, like, October of 2002, they re-released Fellowship of the Ring in the theaters.

[00:46:56] And at the end of the credits, they gave you a sneak peek at Two Towers. And I know this because I was in college, and a bunch of dudes were huge Lord of the Rings fans. And I liked Lord of the Rings. But they were like, we're going to go back. And I got swept into the hype of this. And I was like, yeah, I'm in. I'm down. Let's do it. And I went with a bunch of dudes in college to this movie. And I remember about halfway through going, what am I doing here? Like, I've already seen this. It's not like it's a short commitment.

[00:47:25] No, they showed, like, a two-minute preview for the next one. And everybody's going nuts. And I was like, it was in that moment I realized maybe I'm not as big a Lord of the Rings fan as everyone else is. But, like, a dude who's 17 years old in 2002, 95% chance he's going to see Lord of the Rings a bunch. Okay. Great. So you bought it. Yes. I couldn't tell if it was only like, you know, this is better than books. I couldn't tell if it was like, this is better than books situation.

[00:47:53] Or if he's like, I really want to go see Lord of the Rings again. You said again. It'd been out three months at that point. Yeah. I've never seen it. Never seen any of them. I need to catch up. You've never seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies. Or read it. No. Wow. I mean, I don't think that's necessary. Go put one on and catch up on your sleep. Yeah. I will. And then I was done with it, obviously. Sure. I don't think I've seen them since the theater. They're great. They're all great. Maybe after we're done tonight. I don't know why. Yeah. Just a quick. [00:48:53] I don't want to talk about Scott Patterson the person. Is Luke a libertarian? Like is he like a secret super conservative? Like in this episode, he starts very much griping about any sort of regulation of any kind. Yes. And like I know in previous episodes, Luke is grumpy when things aren't the way he wants them. And he does have an air of why do I have to do it the way you want me to do it.

[00:49:21] But I've never like this episode did extend his lore in a I think anyone trying to put any regulation on me is wrong kind of way. And he instantly didn't like Taylor holding sway over him. Well, that's like but like he didn't like the fact that there were these rules about the apartment complex. He didn't like the fact that somebody was going to give him rules on what he could and couldn't do. Yeah.

[00:49:46] Well, it strikes me as these like talk about a Venn diagram that's a circle is Lord of the Rings bros and libertarians. But like like there's a there's a solid like core of folks that that's kind of their whole thing. Sure. Is that who he is? Luke isn't a permit guy. Luke just took a sledgehammer through the wall. He didn't check to see if it's supporting walls or beams in there. But he's just like I'm Luke like Luke doesn't make decisions.

[00:50:12] But in this episode, he knows he makes decisions clearly like I'm tearing this wall down. I bought the building and like it just for all that I loved about Luke. I was kind of confused at the end result, which is I bought the building, which is like a pretty crazy thing that just he went down there. He didn't take a loan out. He's got money. He has money. Yeah. No, we know he has money. Definitely has money. Yeah. I think that's interesting, Dan. I would clock it. OK. And just make a note of it. Got it.

[00:50:42] Of every time he says something that is in line with a libertarian way of like don't mess with me and I won't mess with you type of thing. Like I don't care what you do.
