It follows a widow who struggles keeping the local vineyard and raising two young boys. She may be in store for a Christmas miracle when she falls for a big city playboy who is sent to get intel on a prospective vineyard for sale.

[00:00:00] Hi, I'm Brandon. I love Netflix Christmas movies.
[00:00:06] I'm Dan and I despise Netflix original Christmas movies.
[00:00:11] I'm Alonzo and Netflix costs how much now? And this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast!
[00:00:30] Now, for what it's worth, Netflix didn't slap their logo on this movie. I think it's just like,
[00:00:42] hey, well, how's this here? Come and join us.
[00:00:45] I didn't think of it till just now when Alonzo said that 22 bucks a month and I watched this on it.
[00:00:56] I didn't think of it. But I did learn that they lease stuff.
[00:01:00] Yeah, that's like, I was listening to a podcast and a stand-up comedian is like,
[00:01:04] if you're in house with Netflix, then your stuff just, they buy it.
[00:01:08] But if they're not sure about you, they'll lease your special.
[00:01:13] They'll put it, they'll like, you'll get X number of hours on the front page when people open it.
[00:01:18] And then if it hits, then great.
[00:01:20] If it doesn't hit, then we'll put it on the back catalog for X number of days.
[00:01:25] And if a certain number of people don't watch it, then it's back. You get it back.
[00:01:28] So like that's dangerous. That seems tough.
[00:01:33] This production company, we've seen that logo before and I'd say like they're clearly,
[00:01:39] this is a company that wants to be like Brad Cravoy slash Marvista.
[00:01:44] They're getting there, I suppose.
[00:01:48] They're getting there.
[00:01:49] One holiday California wine movie at a time.
[00:01:53] Alonzo, how are you? We're getting close to book time, I believe.
[00:01:58] Yeah, we are.
[00:01:59] Just a couple weeks.
[00:02:00] My book.
[00:02:01] Oh, that is a good size book.
[00:02:06] Yeah, it's substantial.
[00:02:09] Yeah, it's coming out May 14th pre-order now.
[00:02:12] There's a book.
[00:02:13] There's an e-book.
[00:02:14] There's an audio book.
[00:02:16] You're going to want to get all three of those.
[00:02:18] I don't know about the e-book.
[00:02:19] I know this for me personally, I'm going to want to hear the soothing sounds of Alonzo
[00:02:22] to all be reading the book and I'm going to want to have a copy for my coffee table
[00:02:27] that you just people come over.
[00:02:29] They see the book.
[00:02:30] It's beautiful.
[00:02:31] You're going to want both.
[00:02:32] It's a both and situation here.
[00:02:34] I mean, I'm proud of the audio book and I hope it came out well,
[00:02:37] but like, yeah, there's no pictures in it.
[00:02:39] So there is that.
[00:02:40] The pictures are a real selling point.
[00:02:43] But you described the pictures.
[00:02:45] You say, if you had this one, this is what you would see.
[00:02:49] What are you a book?
[00:02:51] A long time.
[00:02:52] Is it a top hat?
[00:02:54] What speed are you going to roll with?
[00:02:56] Well, I'm a 1.7 guy on audible.
[00:02:59] I feel like just to make sure that I give my dear friend credit,
[00:03:04] I'm going to knock it down to 1.51.
[00:03:07] Wow.
[00:03:08] Which is that's going to feel like slow.
[00:03:10] But I'm so used to talking to you that I think I might have to go 1.
[00:03:14] It would maybe feel weird if it was better.
[00:03:17] Yeah, I've never had a read a book on audible of someone that I know personally
[00:03:22] and I talked to regularly.
[00:03:23] Like my brother wrote a book and I was reading it and I kept speeding up
[00:03:27] as I would hear him speeding up and I couldn't.
[00:03:30] But having it read to me, I think I might have to go with one speed.
[00:03:34] We'll see how fast you're reading.
[00:03:36] Let me know.
[00:03:38] It's funny because the one time that I had to put you guys at a different speed
[00:03:42] was when I was transcribing episodes for the book
[00:03:45] and I was slowing you down so that I could keep up and typing
[00:03:49] and you all sounded drunk.
[00:03:51] But Alonzo on helium is a good time.
[00:03:54] It is a good time anytime.
[00:03:57] And I think it was a helium shortage.
[00:03:59] So this will get, you know, this will in lieu of actual helium
[00:04:03] get the audio bus.
[00:04:05] Speed it up.
[00:04:06] Holiday in the vineyards.
[00:04:08] Are we ready?
[00:04:09] Shall we?
[00:04:10] Yeah, let's do it.
[00:04:11] December 13th, 2023.
[00:04:13] Just snuck in there right before Christmas.
[00:04:16] I said, yeah, sure.
[00:04:17] Yeah, come on.
[00:04:18] We'll put it out, I guess.
[00:04:20] And it went a little something like this.
[00:04:23] The movie kicks off with a group of people waking up from a night of
[00:04:27] Wake me up
[00:04:29] On the golf course
[00:04:31] Can't wake up
[00:04:32] Because I am drunk
[00:04:34] Same.
[00:04:36] They're drunk.
[00:04:37] They woke up.
[00:04:38] They had a crazy.
[00:04:39] Yes, they were drunk.
[00:04:40] They woke up.
[00:04:41] I don't know.
[00:04:42] I don't know what's going on.
[00:04:43] But they clearly had quite the nights and they ended up on the golf course.
[00:04:47] It's Carter.
[00:04:48] He is living a carefree life.
[00:04:51] He's a bit of a playboy you might say.
[00:04:54] He shows up late to brunch with his mom and his mom is not pleased.
[00:04:59] They own a very large wine company Baldwin Wine
[00:05:06] And their specialty is bad wine.
[00:05:10] And they just want my son to take this business seriously.
[00:05:16] I've grown it and I want him to take it seriously.
[00:05:19] Just doesn't do it.
[00:05:21] So she sends him off to try to do some recon
[00:05:27] On the final vineyard that is in the same area
[00:05:31] In which all of their other vineyards are for Baldwin wines
[00:05:35] And find out kind of what the skinny is.
[00:05:38] There's word that they're going to be selling
[00:05:40] Maybe we can get in there and get in there cheap
[00:05:42] And then we'll just have all the all the vineyards
[00:05:45] To make things worse she wants him to blend in
[00:05:48] So people don't know that he is a Baldwin
[00:05:50] So she sends him in the most discreet vehicle, the bright yellow fiat
[00:05:55] And he shows up and immediately bumps into Valentina
[00:05:59] She's the real estate agent in charge of selling this vineyard
[00:06:04] When she asked what he does he says I'm a carpenter like Jesus
[00:06:10] So she's like oh well I actually am in need of a carpenter
[00:06:15] My guest house I'm trying to get some, I'm trying to finish it
[00:06:18] Make it a guest house and if you want to you can work on it
[00:06:21] And then stay there as well.
[00:06:23] And so he's like great I was going to stay at this really crappy hotel
[00:06:26] This is way better. First night though it's tough, it's cold
[00:06:29] There's no door. The next day he goes to the hardware store
[00:06:33] And meets Mo who agrees to at least transport the necessaries
[00:06:43] In exchange for him trying his wine
[00:06:46] Mo has been trying his hand at wine for a long time
[00:06:50] He's passionate about wine and hey would you try this?
[00:06:53] And he's like sure I'll try it
[00:06:55] Because even though Carter is like lazy and a playboy
[00:06:58] He does, he knows what he's talking about. He knows wine
[00:07:01] He grew up around wine. He has a nose
[00:07:03] He has a nose and so he tastes it spits it out
[00:07:07] And it's like hey will you help me?
[00:07:10] Mo's like it's going to cost you more wine advice
[00:07:13] So we'll see what happens there
[00:07:16] Carter then finds out that Val is actually a widow
[00:07:19] After spending some time hanging out with her kids
[00:07:22] He gets to work on the drywall. It does not go well
[00:07:25] So naturally he's going to have to figure out what to do
[00:07:28] Val comes in and he's shirtless and she's like wowza
[00:07:32] And they actually spend some time together
[00:07:35] They're drinking some wine that has been created
[00:07:38] Around the area using the vineyard
[00:07:41] And it's actually not bad wine
[00:07:44] And he's like this whole time I thought Baldwin
[00:07:47] I thought Baldwin wine was bad because of the vineyards
[00:07:50] But maybe there's good wine to be had here
[00:07:52] And they end the night by almost kissing
[00:07:55] But she pulls away last second
[00:07:57] She and Carter finds out that a group of locals
[00:08:01] Are trying to come together to buy the vineyard
[00:08:03] So that Carter's family can't do that
[00:08:06] Because the entire town basically uses this vineyard
[00:08:09] To make their own delicious wine
[00:08:12] In fact, oh in fact yes that's what they do
[00:08:15] Carter feels bad about coming in
[00:08:18] And buying up the last of the land
[00:08:20] Especially since all the locals not only use
[00:08:23] The vineyard for the grapes but also use the space
[00:08:26] To make the wine
[00:08:28] So he tells his mom that he wants to stay
[00:08:31] And see this through
[00:08:33] Okay and by see it through he means
[00:08:36] Build Val's kids a ramp in the backyard
[00:08:39] To practice snowboarding
[00:08:41] He finishes the project though and is
[00:08:44] About to leave when he's invited by Moe
[00:08:46] To come by the market
[00:08:48] But when he gets there he realizes that it's just a setup
[00:08:51] To get Carter and Val to hang out
[00:08:54] He's having a good time with Val
[00:08:57] He's having such a good time in fact
[00:09:00] That he leaves his mom with voicemail saying
[00:09:02] We absolutely cannot buy this vineyard
[00:09:06] Sure she won't
[00:09:08] Yeah she sure she won't
[00:09:10] With that type of passion
[00:09:13] He comes back he saw us at dances hard with Val
[00:09:16] And they end up kissing on the dance floor
[00:09:20] When he takes a break though
[00:09:22] Val Carter they find out the bad news
[00:09:24] That Baldwin wine outbid the town
[00:09:28] At the last seconds and they now own the vineyards
[00:09:32] Carter can't take this anymore
[00:09:35] He's been holding the secret that he's a Baldwin
[00:09:37] For this entire movie and he finally comes out
[00:09:39] And he says it's me I did it I am a Baldwin
[00:09:43] Everyone's very mad at him Val storms off
[00:09:47] But Moe Moe's a boy Moe and Carter have become friends
[00:09:51] And so he lets them stay at the hardware store
[00:09:54] For the night but when he wakes up
[00:09:56] Moe does punch them in the gut
[00:09:58] Give them the option face or gut
[00:10:00] Yeah face or gut what can you do
[00:10:02] But they do hatch a plan together
[00:10:04] And this is Baldwin is having their big Christmas party
[00:10:07] And so what they're going to do is every year Baldwin brings in
[00:10:11] Some actual good wine for the party
[00:10:14] We're going to switch the good wine with
[00:10:17] It's a real Folder's Crystal situation
[00:10:19] That's right with Moe's good wine
[00:10:23] And that way when they taste it they're like
[00:10:25] This is amazing wine and then they can do the old
[00:10:27] Switch them up look at what you're actually drinking
[00:10:29] So Carter gets on stage he announces that Baldwin
[00:10:32] Bought the vineyard and they're going to use this
[00:10:35] Vineyard to launch another branch of the company
[00:10:37] That makes actual good wine such as the wine you're drinking
[00:10:40] Which is actually pulls off the label
[00:10:43] It's Ho's wine
[00:10:45] Mom is surprised
[00:10:48] Taken aback
[00:10:50] But ultimately is proud of her son for actually doing something
[00:10:53] That's right Val is there to see all of this
[00:10:56] And that's enough for her to forgive him
[00:10:58] For lying to her about his identity
[00:11:01] The movie ends with Carter Val and the boys out on the ski slopes
[00:11:05] Having a great time and now my friends was
[00:11:08] Holiday in the Vineyard
[00:11:12] We did it
[00:11:14] Let's take a quick break we'll come back
[00:11:16] And we'll break this movie down here on
[00:11:18] Take the Hallmark
[00:11:20] Welcome back everybody
[00:11:31] I'm having fun you're having fun Alonzo you're having fun
[00:11:34] Always
[00:11:36] We're talking holiday in the vineyard
[00:11:38] Vineyards
[00:11:40] There's none of them in the movie it doesn't matter
[00:11:42] Let's break this movie down let's start with a hot take
[00:11:45] I'm going to start with you Alonzo Alonzo
[00:11:47] What do you think of Holiday in the Vineyard
[00:11:51] I didn't hate this
[00:11:54] I didn't love it but I didn't hate it
[00:11:56] Hey
[00:11:57] You're in company here you're not on an island
[00:12:00] I'm just letting you know
[00:12:02] Maybe I was broken by Christmas in California
[00:12:05] Which the two films that previously starred
[00:12:08] Josh Swickard who's the star here
[00:12:10] But I'm reminded of the famous quotation from
[00:12:14] A legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard
[00:12:17] Where he said the best way to review a movie
[00:12:20] Is to make another movie
[00:12:22] And this movie to me so often felt like
[00:12:25] A corrective to the California Christmas movies
[00:12:28] Was like what if the character
[00:12:31] Who's really good at like you know
[00:12:34] Doing wine tasting is somebody who actually
[00:12:37] Was raised in a winemaking family
[00:12:39] And isn't just a savant sommelier
[00:12:41] What if a character who has to build a new room
[00:12:45] And has no idea how to do so gets outside help
[00:12:48] In building that new room rather than just magically
[00:12:51] Renovating a barn by himself overnight
[00:12:53] What if the lying character kisses the leading lady
[00:12:57] But doesn't like go all the way with the leading lady
[00:13:00] Before revealing his true identity
[00:13:02] So it's like they're doing a better version of the
[00:13:06] Yes are they remaking that movie they sure are
[00:13:08] But they're learning from their mistakes
[00:13:10] And they're doing it better
[00:13:12] And there were actual genuine moments of like
[00:13:15] Funny lines that landed, characters that kind of dug
[00:13:18] Motivations that made sense
[00:13:21] So if you discount the fact that there's
[00:13:24] No vineyards and no holiday in this movie
[00:13:27] There's a lot to like
[00:13:29] That's right I think that's accurate
[00:13:31] I agree with you 100% did think
[00:13:34] Listen this is the same movie by and large
[00:13:37] As California Christmas
[00:13:40] Same company Alonzo?
[00:13:42] Yeah I believe so same production company
[00:13:45] Same lead actor
[00:13:47] This movie though I was pretty darn invested
[00:13:51] To the point where Dana was annoyed
[00:13:53] Because I was really locked into it
[00:13:56] And I'll just say this I'll pull back to Curtin here
[00:13:59] We watched this movie the same day as we watched
[00:14:01] Last week's movie Gringo stole Christmas
[00:14:06] That movie is 20 minutes shorter than this movie
[00:14:10] And you could have convinced me it was the other way around
[00:14:14] I quite enjoyed it and I like this lead guy
[00:14:18] The way he does some line deliveries
[00:14:20] Legitimately makes me laugh I think it's funny
[00:14:23] I thought the character of Moe was awesome
[00:14:26] Like just like a cool side character
[00:14:30] And yeah overall just really enjoyed it
[00:14:32] Dana?
[00:14:33] Yeah these two are underselling one aspect of this film
[00:14:37] It's already been made before
[00:14:39] This is not
[00:14:41] What haven't they all done?
[00:14:43] Not like this this is literally
[00:14:47] I don't know how to say this like we reviewed
[00:14:49] California Christmas and you guys reviewed the sequel
[00:14:51] I was out for that one
[00:14:54] This is the same exact movie with the same exact lead
[00:14:57] Like Playboy mom sends him down to buy a vineyard
[00:15:02] It has to have a secret identity
[00:15:04] Works on the vineyard doesn't
[00:15:07] It's the same exact movie
[00:15:11] I thought I was being punked
[00:15:14] It is the same not a little bit
[00:15:17] Like quirky sidekick that isn't white
[00:15:21] That's there and helping them realize
[00:15:24] So much of this movie is exactly the same thing
[00:15:28] No butler in this one
[00:15:29] There's no butler
[00:15:30] No no there's no butler you're right
[00:15:32] It's uncanny how that Netflix
[00:15:36] They literally bought the same horse twice
[00:15:38] They did it
[00:15:40] It is unbelievable that this has happened
[00:15:45] Having said that
[00:15:48] They're not wrong about it being better
[00:15:50] I would not go as so far as to say that I enjoyed myself
[00:15:55] But it's definitely better than a California Christmas
[00:15:58] I did do what Alonzo said they did
[00:16:00] I did laugh a few times in this movie
[00:16:03] I did somewhat care I guess about the characters
[00:16:08] That were on screen
[00:16:11] But this is lazy
[00:16:12] This is very lazy
[00:16:14] And I spent a lot of time bewildered
[00:16:18] Like I know that we literally as a profession
[00:16:21] Watch the same movie over and over again
[00:16:23] I hear what I'm saying not what I'm not saying
[00:16:25] I know that we're going to see the guy and girl
[00:16:27] And up together through a range of circumstances
[00:16:29] That could have been fixed with an email
[00:16:31] I understand that
[00:16:32] This is literally it would be like
[00:16:35] If they did another movie where Chris Palah is an actor
[00:16:41] And is at the Biltmore
[00:16:43] And is with Nicky Deloach
[00:16:46] And instead of calling it Christmas at Biltmore
[00:16:49] They called it a Biltmore holiday
[00:16:51] That is what's happened here
[00:16:55] I can't overstate that
[00:16:57] The more I looked into it
[00:17:00] The more I was
[00:17:01] Because at first I was like
[00:17:02] This is kind of similar to that other thing
[00:17:04] And then I started looking into it
[00:17:06] And I was just like
[00:17:08] They did it
[00:17:09] They...
[00:17:10] The Nicky Deloach inherits a diary
[00:17:12] From a dead relative movie
[00:17:14] Are all much more different from each other
[00:17:16] Than this is from California Christmas
[00:17:18] Correct
[00:17:19] I wasn't even angry
[00:17:21] I was impressed that they cracked employment
[00:17:24] They cracked the idea of how to get paid for nothing
[00:17:28] They did it
[00:17:29] This is how you do it
[00:17:31] You've already made this movie
[00:17:33] So yeah, but better than those movies
[00:17:36] I guess
[00:17:37] And to the people that are going to be like
[00:17:39] Hey, Hallmark does the same thing all the time
[00:17:41] I'm just telling you they don't
[00:17:42] The difference is
[00:17:44] This is the same plot
[00:17:47] With the same lead
[00:17:49] And it is this guy who is sent to a vineyard
[00:17:52] From his mom
[00:17:54] To get it
[00:17:56] And he hides his identity
[00:17:58] And works on the vineyard
[00:18:00] And has a sidekick that's helping him under it
[00:18:02] It is not like Hallmark making a movie
[00:18:05] Where a big city girl goes back to her hometown
[00:18:07] And meets the hunky high school teacher
[00:18:09] That's not...
[00:18:10] We get it
[00:18:11] Those plots have been done 100 times
[00:18:13] This is literally the same
[00:18:15] The same
[00:18:16] I couldn't believe it
[00:18:18] They took the first screenplay
[00:18:20] Did a save as
[00:18:21] And then went in and just like
[00:18:23] Yeah, changed his view
[00:18:24] Take the mother out with the kids
[00:18:25] Trying, you know
[00:18:26] Yeah
[00:18:27] It's time for all the fields where we're talking about
[00:18:28] What gave us this feels
[00:18:30] Alonzo
[00:18:32] Yeah, I liked the fact that
[00:18:36] The horny best friend is not admonished
[00:18:40] For her hornyness
[00:18:42] I thought there was a real sort of sex positivity
[00:18:44] To her portrayal as being man hungry
[00:18:47] And then they set her up with Mo and that's very nice
[00:18:50] And they also do a thing where she's like
[00:18:52] Hey, in college I was
[00:18:54] She does this thing where she's like
[00:18:55] Can't it's fine to be both?
[00:18:56] Like I wasn't this
[00:18:58] And now I am
[00:18:59] Yeah
[00:19:00] I was nose to the grindstone
[00:19:02] I became a nurse
[00:19:03] Now I see people dying all the time
[00:19:04] So I'm gonna live it up
[00:19:05] Little things like that
[00:19:07] The mom later gets an explanation
[00:19:09] Of why she's so ruthless about the way she runs a company
[00:19:11] They make it a point to sort of
[00:19:14] Smash out these characters a little bit more
[00:19:16] Than you would expect
[00:19:18] My big feel here is
[00:19:21] There's a movie that I love that I don't
[00:19:24] Oh no, I did make Bran watch it
[00:19:26] Actually during 25 weeks of Christmas
[00:19:27] It happened on Fifth Avenue
[00:19:29] Yeah
[00:19:30] Which is a movie about
[00:19:33] A group of World War II veterans
[00:19:37] I mean it's about a lot of things
[00:19:38] But a group of World War II veterans
[00:19:39] Who are trying to buy an abandoned army base
[00:19:41] To create affordable housing
[00:19:43] And fighting with a big rich guy
[00:19:45] Who wants to buy it and turn into like
[00:19:47] A luxury, you know, development, blah, blah, blah
[00:19:49] And that movie is so much about
[00:19:52] The power of collectivism
[00:19:54] That one of the screenwriters actually got hauled
[00:19:56] In front of the House Un-American Activities Committee
[00:19:58] Checks
[00:19:59] And this movie is about collectivism
[00:20:02] This movie is about all of these tiny
[00:20:04] Garagiste, a word I learned from this film
[00:20:07] Winemakers banding together
[00:20:10] To get this property and try and keep it
[00:20:12] Out of the hands of the monolith
[00:20:15] Huge corporation that makes crap wine
[00:20:17] And I'm like, okay, yeah
[00:20:20] More of this please
[00:20:23] Carter's Santa suit was not good
[00:20:26] No, but Carter's Santa was
[00:20:29] Carter went up there on the mic
[00:20:31] And did the ho-ho-ho Merry Christmas
[00:20:33] I was like, oh, this guy
[00:20:35] He'd sounded like a different person
[00:20:36] This guy's doing a thing
[00:20:38] And so I got some feels from that
[00:20:40] And the Henley also worked
[00:20:42] Yeah, of course, well yeah
[00:20:43] I mean you do listen
[00:20:44] You can see this guy's shirtless a couple times
[00:20:46] And I don't want to let a movie go by
[00:20:51] Where that happens where I don't go
[00:20:53] Oh my gosh
[00:20:55] Golf clap
[00:20:56] Yeah, not bad pal
[00:20:58] Not bad
[00:20:59] Just a not bad
[00:21:01] Yeah, I mean compared to me
[00:21:02] Yeah, well of course
[00:21:03] It's not fair
[00:21:05] It's not fair
[00:21:06] I mean
[00:21:07] Yeah
[00:21:08] The character of Moe is played by
[00:21:10] Omar Gooding in this movie
[00:21:12] Cuba Gooding Jr.'s brother
[00:21:14] Which he's unfortunately most known for
[00:21:16] It would be my guess
[00:21:17] But I know him most as Irvin
[00:21:19] On Hangin' with Mr. Cooper
[00:21:20] One of my favorite shows on TGIF
[00:21:22] Even more than step-by-step
[00:21:24] Haters don't hate
[00:21:25] I loved Hangin' with Mr. Cooper
[00:21:27] It made me very
[00:21:29] I've never felt older
[00:21:31] Watching a Hallmark movie
[00:21:33] Than seeing Irvin from
[00:21:35] Hangin' with Mr. Cooper
[00:21:37] Being the guy that gives the sage advice
[00:21:40] But he was great
[00:21:42] He was
[00:21:43] Yeah
[00:21:44] But the fact that he is now in that age category
[00:21:47] Where he's like
[00:21:48] Hey young buck
[00:21:49] You gotta learn some lessons
[00:21:51] I was like
[00:21:52] Oh no
[00:21:55] Cause Irvin and I
[00:21:57] I think he's in his 40s
[00:21:59] And I am too
[00:22:00] And I was like
[00:22:01] If Irvin's old enough to give sage advice
[00:22:03] I gotta start learning some stuff
[00:22:06] Well I thought you were like Martin Star
[00:22:08] Like you know
[00:22:09] There's a freaking geeks kid
[00:22:10] Is now a dad of teenagers
[00:22:12] Oh my god how long has it been
[00:22:14] And he might be wondering
[00:22:15] Why did a Dan say young buck
[00:22:16] And it is because
[00:22:17] His character says young buck
[00:22:19] A dozen times
[00:22:20] At least
[00:22:21] Over under a dozen times
[00:22:22] Shout out to all the young bucks out there
[00:22:24] Let's take one more quick break
[00:22:25] We'll come back with the way
[00:22:26] What and the
[00:22:28] What the flex
[00:22:29] What the flex
[00:22:30] Here on
[00:22:31] At the Hallmark
[00:22:32] At the Hallmark
[00:22:33] At the Hallmark
[00:22:41] Welcome back everybody
[00:22:42] We are talking about
[00:22:44] Holiday in the Vineyard
[00:22:47] California Christmas
[00:22:48] Yes
[00:22:49] Three
[00:22:50] Let's get to the way it was
[00:22:51] When we're talking about what in two minutes
[00:22:52] Go away what
[00:22:53] I'll start with you Alonzo
[00:22:54] I didn't have a ton frankly
[00:22:56] I think
[00:22:58] I think a lot of this
[00:22:59] Within the framework that it's establishing
[00:23:01] Kind of works
[00:23:02] But like okay so Cindy
[00:23:04] The aforementioned sex positive nurse friend
[00:23:07] And does not know Mo
[00:23:09] Has never met Mo
[00:23:10] But has like struck
[00:23:11] And seen him
[00:23:13] This is a small town
[00:23:14] Yes it's huge
[00:23:15] This is a small town with not a lot of like
[00:23:17] You know if she's ever set foot
[00:23:19] In the hardware store
[00:23:20] Which I'm imagining she would have
[00:23:21] She would know who Mo is
[00:23:23] So the idea that they had somehow
[00:23:25] Managed to elude each other's attention
[00:23:27] Didn't quite jibe with me
[00:23:29] In terms of the rest of how this movie presents
[00:23:31] This little you know
[00:23:32] You're 100% right
[00:23:33] That this is
[00:23:34] He is like works at a hardware store
[00:23:36] Ann sells wine
[00:23:38] Is historically known in the town
[00:23:40] She's from the town
[00:23:41] The fact that she doesn't even recognize him
[00:23:44] Is crazy
[00:23:45] It's just crazy
[00:23:46] Like oh who's this new person
[00:23:48] Like that was wild
[00:23:50] I thought they have that was all bananas
[00:23:51] And then I mean
[00:23:52] The giant white what
[00:23:53] Hang over all of this is like
[00:23:55] Did they know that it was a Christmas movie
[00:23:58] Because there is
[00:24:00] I mean like look
[00:24:01] We've seen the movies that have 15 trees
[00:24:03] In an office
[00:24:04] Like we've seen them go too far in the other direction
[00:24:06] But this movie
[00:24:08] Like so little effort
[00:24:10] So rare that it's mentioned at all
[00:24:12] And certainly plot wise
[00:24:14] Nothing is hinging on it
[00:24:15] Apart from the coming of the closing
[00:24:17] Of the year I guess
[00:24:19] They say that they have to sell it
[00:24:21] By the 24th
[00:24:22] That is the closest we get
[00:24:24] The movie ends
[00:24:26] Or not ends but has the Christmas party
[00:24:29] The Christmas party sure
[00:24:30] Yeah
[00:24:31] But it's like yeah
[00:24:32] And it's kind of like alright
[00:24:34] I mean I'm not saying that every movie
[00:24:35] Has to go full hallmark
[00:24:37] With a cookie decorating scene
[00:24:38] Or a tree lighting or whatever
[00:24:39] But like throw me the occasional
[00:24:42] Tinsel cover bone movie
[00:24:44] This is two weeks in a row
[00:24:46] For me Alonzo
[00:24:47] Last week tried harder
[00:24:49] Yeah last week tried harder
[00:24:50] But still Christmas tree
[00:24:52] Yeah yeah
[00:24:53] Just need more
[00:24:54] Just need more
[00:24:55] Need a little Christmas
[00:24:56] That's all I'm saying
[00:24:57] Yeah just going to show you that if a movie is good
[00:24:58] Brain is willing to forgive the Christmas
[00:25:00] More than if a movie is not good
[00:25:02] So if you hear a brain complaining
[00:25:03] About a lack of Christmas
[00:25:04] Just know that under that
[00:25:06] The movie wasn't good
[00:25:08] Yeah yeah
[00:25:09] Probably true
[00:25:10] Yeah
[00:25:11] I only got a couple as well
[00:25:13] One there is a scene where he
[00:25:15] Builds this ramp for the kids
[00:25:19] To practice their snowboarding
[00:25:20] And it's sweet it's a nice
[00:25:22] Nice gesture
[00:25:23] And the kids do
[00:25:25] They give it a shot
[00:25:26] That one of the kids
[00:25:28] Is doing it multiple times
[00:25:30] And we see it and he's like
[00:25:31] Oh wow he's pretty good
[00:25:32] One kid they use the same
[00:25:34] Dropout fall and reaction
[00:25:37] Twice
[00:25:38] Yeah
[00:25:39] So I don't think he liked it
[00:25:41] I think he did it once
[00:25:42] And he was like I'm done
[00:25:43] And kudos to you kid
[00:25:45] Kudos to you for not
[00:25:46] Making him do it again
[00:25:48] He finishes
[00:25:51] The guest house
[00:25:53] And he looks at it and he goes
[00:25:55] Finally finished something that she started
[00:25:57] Which would be wonderful
[00:25:59] If it actually like was fully finished
[00:26:01] The flooring still not finished
[00:26:04] I'm sure there's other things
[00:26:05] But the general drywall
[00:26:08] Finished
[00:26:09] That's right
[00:26:10] And so kudos to him for that
[00:26:12] Last but not least
[00:26:14] They get to the Christmas party
[00:26:18] And both Mo and Carter
[00:26:20] Pop out of that trunk
[00:26:22] And just because they can fit in it
[00:26:25] Doesn't mean that they should
[00:26:27] Or that they would for a drive
[00:26:29] They're bouncing around
[00:26:31] Hitting each other
[00:26:32] There's just not enough room
[00:26:33] For two grown men to be in the back
[00:26:35] Of a Toyota whatever that
[00:26:37] I think it was a Toyota Corolla
[00:26:39] Just because they can fit in it
[00:26:41] Doesn't mean they should
[00:26:43] Or they could fit in it
[00:26:44] I mean technically they do
[00:26:46] We see them
[00:26:48] But I don't think that's happening
[00:26:50] Like out of sight George Clooney
[00:26:52] And Jennifer Lopez are sharing
[00:26:54] Like a sedan trunk
[00:26:56] Yeah and that scene works though
[00:26:58] Yeah that's one of the best scenes ever
[00:27:00] This I don't know
[00:27:03] I guarantee you that trunk was bigger
[00:27:05] Than a Toyota Corolla
[00:27:07] Like this is a compact car
[00:27:09] I just I don't think
[00:27:11] I could fit in a trunk by myself
[00:27:13] Of a Toyota Corolla
[00:27:14] Like the back seat
[00:27:16] Then it doesn't make sense
[00:27:18] Because they're sneaking them in
[00:27:20] Maybe that's how they did it
[00:27:22] For a shock
[00:27:24] I don't think they can
[00:27:26] For a guy that says he's a carpenter
[00:27:28] Getting roped into do work at a house
[00:27:30] It's weird that she doesn't have him
[00:27:32] Do any carpentry
[00:27:34] He does drywall hanging
[00:27:36] Which is not that at all
[00:27:38] He's lying so it doesn't matter
[00:27:40] And later they do build something
[00:27:42] Out of wood but
[00:27:44] It's weird also weird is
[00:27:46] He says he's a carpenter because
[00:27:48] He just talks about Jesus being a carpenter
[00:27:50] And she our leading lady looks at him
[00:27:52] And goes I thought Jesus was a fisherman
[00:27:54] Is that a common misconception
[00:27:56] I thought we were pretty much all in the same page
[00:27:58] That we knew Jesus was a huge carpenter
[00:28:00] He's a fisher of men
[00:28:02] Fisher of men, different store
[00:28:04] Amen, yeah absolutely
[00:28:06] No one talked about the shoes of the carpenter
[00:28:08] That's right
[00:28:10] He wakes up drunk
[00:28:12] On a golf course
[00:28:14] Because one of the golf course managers
[00:28:16] Course managers wakes him up
[00:28:18] And that would be all well and good
[00:28:20] And make sense if it weren't 11am
[00:28:22] He says what time is it
[00:28:24] And the course manager says 11am
[00:28:26] So you mean to tell me
[00:28:28] Before 11am no one played
[00:28:30] That golf course or managed it
[00:28:32] That's not possible
[00:28:34] It's just not
[00:28:36] That's not possible
[00:28:38] You don't, no
[00:28:40] Just no way
[00:28:42] His mom then says
[00:28:44] You're going to go to this small town
[00:28:46] And you're going to blend in
[00:28:48] And so you can't have all the normal perks
[00:28:50] That you have
[00:28:52] We found a place for you to stay
[00:28:54] You also can't have your normal company car
[00:28:56] You've got to go incognito
[00:28:58] What is incognito for him
[00:29:00] A Bumblebee yellow
[00:29:02] Fiat 500
[00:29:04] With a black racing stripe on the side of it
[00:29:06] No
[00:29:08] Nothing says I'm from out of town
[00:29:10] Ask me about my bank account
[00:29:12] More
[00:29:14] Than a bright yellow fiat 500
[00:29:16] With a black racing stripe
[00:29:18] Camouflage
[00:29:20] Dazzle camouflage
[00:29:22] It's like there's three
[00:29:24] 1989 Chevy's
[00:29:26] And a fiat 500 as bright as the sun
[00:29:28] The shade fiat
[00:29:30] Gets in this movie
[00:29:32] Is unjust
[00:29:34] You start shaking over 30 guys fiat's a real company
[00:29:36] You can't do that
[00:29:38] Real people made this car
[00:29:40] It's not a Vespa, it's a car
[00:29:42] That might be actionable
[00:29:44] That was tough
[00:29:46] That was a tough one
[00:29:48] I got a little off track
[00:29:50] With the bids but I'm not really worried about that
[00:29:52] Because I'm sure that rich people do this stuff
[00:29:54] All the time where they just wait and then out bid you
[00:29:56] But at one point
[00:29:58] He realizes the history of this wine
[00:30:00] Because they've conveniently placed
[00:30:02] Newspaper in the guest house
[00:30:04] From the 70's I believe
[00:30:06] So basically the short version is
[00:30:08] This is a guest house that needs
[00:30:10] Complete renovation
[00:30:12] But for some reason in this guest house
[00:30:14] The woman that lives there
[00:30:16] Has kept
[00:30:18] Newspapers from 50 years ago
[00:30:20] Of the Los Santos Gazette
[00:30:22] So not like the New York Times
[00:30:24] Of the local news
[00:30:26] Just one newspaper I think
[00:30:28] There's a stack of that
[00:30:30] Because it's not like my husband got mentioned here
[00:30:32] And so I'm keeping this
[00:30:34] It's just a stack of 50 year old
[00:30:36] Newspapers
[00:30:38] In her guest home
[00:30:40] All of this stuff happened before she was alive
[00:30:42] I don't even know how she got it
[00:30:44] Was it passed down?
[00:30:46] Were the papers passed down from her parents?
[00:30:48] The fact that the old newspaper
[00:30:50] In this movie is from 1977
[00:30:52] Made me feel the way you did about Omar
[00:30:54] Yeah, Omar Gooding, fair
[00:30:56] But I still think
[00:30:58] Mr. Cooper
[00:31:00] I would assume the first time somebody
[00:31:02] From that era saw the Fonz
[00:31:04] Being the old man of wisdom
[00:31:06] Like that would be kind of
[00:31:08] Not that Irvin from Hangman Mr. Cooper
[00:31:10] Is the Fonz, but I guess similar
[00:31:12] For what it's worth when I was born
[00:31:14] The papers from the 70's were also
[00:31:16] Still really old
[00:31:18] But imagine like
[00:31:20] The first time you see a movie where
[00:31:22] Ryder Strong is back in my day
[00:31:24] Grandpa
[00:31:26] You know what, the thing about women
[00:31:28] You know what I mean
[00:31:30] When he starts in on one of those
[00:31:32] You're gonna be like oh no
[00:31:34] Oh no
[00:31:36] Your day will come and I'm going to be there
[00:31:38] That's right
[00:31:40] There's a scene in this movie where
[00:31:42] The two sidekicks decide to
[00:31:44] Funnap the two leads
[00:31:46] So they basically do this thing
[00:31:48] They're funnapping them
[00:31:50] One of them is like we're taking your kids
[00:31:52] And we're gonna hang out with them
[00:31:54] It's a weird scene
[00:31:56] It's terrible, super cringy
[00:31:58] They have the kids like actually
[00:32:00] Ganged
[00:32:02] It's not okay
[00:32:04] Literally if someone I knew did that to my kids
[00:32:06] I would call them up and be like
[00:32:08] Generally a funny bit
[00:32:10] Don't you ever
[00:32:12] Ever for any Fonzies
[00:32:14] I would go straight home and be like
[00:32:16] This funnap is over
[00:32:18] You went too far
[00:32:20] But they look at each other at the end of the scene
[00:32:22] They go sit a bottle of wine and go sit down with a cheese board
[00:32:24] And as they walk off
[00:32:26] Our sage advice
[00:32:28] Omar Gooding goes
[00:32:30] Works every time
[00:32:32] What?
[00:32:34] He's doing this all the time
[00:32:36] How often are you conspiring with this woman
[00:32:38] You just meant to funnap some children
[00:32:40] Maybe he's been doing it for years
[00:32:42] And he taught her how to do it
[00:32:44] And she went a little too hard the first time
[00:32:46] He's like hey next time you do
[00:32:48] You can't like do that to the kids
[00:32:50] But generally you got the idea
[00:32:52] Two more quick ones
[00:32:54] One is they somehow do
[00:32:56] The Folger's Crystals bits
[00:32:58] Where they're like did you know
[00:33:00] You're not drinking some fancy French wine
[00:33:02] You're actually drinking wine from right down the street
[00:33:04] Did you notice the name of the fake French wine?
[00:33:06] No what was it?
[00:33:08] It was Chateau de Monturre
[00:33:10] Which is Liar's house
[00:33:12] Oh that's great
[00:33:14] Somebody would have caught that you would think
[00:33:16] I'm always reminded of the Chris Farley SNL sketch
[00:33:18] Like you wear your drink and Folger's Crystals
[00:33:20] And he loses his mind like flips the table
[00:33:22] And he's like this is one of my favorite
[00:33:24] Favorite moments in SNL history
[00:33:26] It's like the back
[00:33:28] He loses his mind it's great
[00:33:30] But no one questions
[00:33:32] How they set up that sting
[00:33:34] That's a lot of work
[00:33:36] Your bottles fake label
[00:33:38] On there all of those bottles
[00:33:40] At the dinner
[00:33:42] Because they got snuck in the car
[00:33:44] In the Toyota Corolla
[00:33:46] And they're like
[00:33:48] What's the point of that
[00:33:50] That's a lot of work
[00:33:52] I don't know how to do it
[00:33:54] The wine was already there
[00:33:56] If Moe is the waiter
[00:33:58] He's able to take the existing wine
[00:34:00] And stash it somewhere and replace it with his own
[00:34:02] And that's why they made him a waiter
[00:34:04] They don't dwell on the details
[00:34:06] There's no Ocean's 11 reveal
[00:34:08] Of how it happened
[00:34:10] No split screen
[00:34:12] Even Soderbergh they are not
[00:34:14] And I saw our producer Aaron Shea
[00:34:16] In the other room also going to chuckle out of this
[00:34:18] In his big speech at the end of this movie
[00:34:20] He starts a line by saying
[00:34:22] Dionysus once said
[00:34:24] What
[00:34:26] What
[00:34:28] Is that what the Greek gods and goddesses are known for
[00:34:30] Is all of their quotes
[00:34:34] You know
[00:34:36] Zeus once said you can't do it in the words
[00:34:38] Of Athena
[00:34:40] I believe it was Nike
[00:34:42] That said just do it
[00:34:44] What are you talking about
[00:34:46] Dionysus once said
[00:34:48] Do you have a primary source on that
[00:34:50] According to our records
[00:34:52] That's right, I believe it was Hermes
[00:34:54] That was absurd
[00:34:56] Anything else would have worked there
[00:34:58] But that's all I got
[00:35:00] Hermes doesn't like to make toys
[00:35:02] It's time for what the flex
[00:35:04] As we were talking about any questions that we still had
[00:35:06] That we'd like some answers to
[00:35:08] Alonzo
[00:35:10] What I did admire about this movie
[00:35:12] Is usually because
[00:35:14] The Hallmark movies are
[00:35:16] Female centric for the characters
[00:35:18] A lot of it we get
[00:35:20] Businesswoman, hot widow
[00:35:22] With kid and it's all about
[00:35:24] New mommy bonding
[00:35:26] With potential kid
[00:35:28] And this one you've got the guy
[00:35:30] Sort of becoming surrogate father figure
[00:35:32] To these two boys who've lost their dad
[00:35:34] And they do the whole snowboarding bit
[00:35:36] And that's all kind of nice
[00:35:38] I'm wondering like
[00:35:40] When do the boys find out
[00:35:42] That he was totally lying about
[00:35:44] Being a carpenter, about his name
[00:35:46] About not being a Baldwin
[00:35:48] And how does that go over
[00:35:50] In these emotionally fragile children
[00:35:52] Trust isn't important at that stage
[00:35:54] I don't think
[00:35:56] When they lost their dad already
[00:35:58] I'm sure they're totally fine
[00:36:00] It's all good
[00:36:02] NBD, a lot of my kids all the time
[00:36:04] There's a
[00:36:06] Woman on the board
[00:36:08] Or something of Baldwin
[00:36:10] That at three different times
[00:36:12] This is a great one
[00:36:14] Where's Carter?
[00:36:16] What's going on with Carter?
[00:36:18] She is thirsty for some Carter
[00:36:20] What's going on with this woman and Carter?
[00:36:22] This woman is
[00:36:24] Her job to be 65 years old
[00:36:26] She is
[00:36:28] Definitely like
[00:36:30] Similar age to the mom
[00:36:32] And she's very concerned about
[00:36:34] Where Carter is
[00:36:36] Way more concerned than the mom ever is
[00:36:38] She's got a whole cougar narrative going on
[00:36:40] I think she's got some going on for Carter
[00:36:42] It's just a sneaky suspicion
[00:36:44] On my part, Dana?
[00:36:46] Yeah, this is an easy one
[00:36:48] The what the Flicks here is how many times
[00:36:50] Now that we know you can make the same
[00:36:52] How many times can Netflix do this
[00:36:54] Without complaints?
[00:36:56] Can we get Christmas on the vine
[00:36:58] Next year?
[00:37:00] This is a really good question
[00:37:02] A grand crew Christmas
[00:37:04] Absolutely for sure
[00:37:06] That leads us to next week's movie
[00:37:08] Pinot Noël
[00:37:10] As I was looking this movie up
[00:37:12] I know they're going to make that one
[00:37:14] Oh, don't even put that in the universe
[00:37:16] Sorry, Brian
[00:37:18] As I was looking up this movie
[00:37:20] Instead of searching
[00:37:22] For holiday in the vineyards
[00:37:24] I searched for Vineyard Christmas
[00:37:26] And wouldn't you know it
[00:37:28] A vineyard Christmas
[00:37:30] Came out last year
[00:37:32] On Netflix?
[00:37:34] No, on Zoom-O
[00:37:36] But we are going to watch it
[00:37:38] For next week, a Vineyard Christmas
[00:37:40] Is it different at all?
[00:37:42] Let's find out
[00:37:44] A Vineyard Christmas 2023 Zoom-O
[00:37:46] I believe it's on all sorts of different things now
[00:37:48] Not just on the Zoom-O app
[00:37:50] So just search it
[00:37:52] It'll pop up
[00:37:54] A Vineyard Christmas
[00:37:56] Not to be confused
[00:37:58] Meanwhile, Hallmark
[00:38:00] Had a series of Vineyard movies
[00:38:02] With RC
[00:38:04] ARLC
[00:38:06] You know, Truster as far as you throw
[00:38:08] And Brendan Penny
[00:38:10] And they never got around to doing a Christmas one
[00:38:12] And I think they're just clearly throwing money
[00:38:14] In the street at this point
[00:38:16] Yeah, it's free at that point
[00:38:18] So let's keep the good Vineyard vibes going
[00:38:20] For next week
[00:38:22] You asked
[00:38:24] Just Netflix specific for sure
[00:38:26] Netflix can roll one or two of these out every year
[00:38:28] I think if Netflix wanted to
[00:38:30] I've seen this already
[00:38:32] They could get their hands on this movie
[00:38:34] I think this movie is kind of out there
[00:38:36] For the taking
[00:38:38] It's like they don't realize that
[00:38:40] People will happily watch the same Christmas movie
[00:38:42] Over and over again
[00:38:44] It doesn't mean you have to keep making new same ones
[00:38:46] I want to see this at Josh,
[00:38:48] Whatever his name is
[00:38:50] Do it again
[00:38:52] Let's try it again
[00:38:54] Swirl that glass around baby
[00:38:56] It's gonna be perfect
[00:38:58] It's gonna be perfect next time
[00:39:00] Well, until next week's
[00:39:02] Vine movie and until tomorrow of course
[00:39:04] It will be the first to wish you a Merry Christmas
[00:39:24] You're about to hear some ads
[00:39:26] That help keep the lights on here in the old studio
[00:39:28] Thanks
[00:39:30] For listening or don't listen
[00:39:32] It's really up to you at this point
[00:39:34] Is that the end of the show
[00:39:36] I mean, you're listening to me hi
[00:39:38] But here they come
[00:39:40] I promise they're coming
[00:39:42] Yep, here they are
[00:39:44] Happy day
[00:39:54] You
[00:40:24] You
[00:40:54] You
