Holiday Mismatch (Hallmark Channel - 2024) ft. Justin Kirkland

Barbara is newly retired and really into keeping the house clean. She decides to join a Christmas committee. The meeting is supposed to start at 9:00 AM, but when she arrives, no one is there. Ten minutes later, the group leader, Cath, shows up and says, “Oh yeah, it’s a flexible 9.” The rest of the committee arrives, and they’re quite the characters. Barbara is clearly annoyed by this fly-by-night committee. When the opportunity arises for her to head up the committee budget, she jumps at it, but she’s shocked to discover that Cath has just been keeping the receipts in a literal shoebox.

We meet Barbara’s son, Shane. She thinks he is lonely, so she wants to find him a date for the holidays using an app called Holiday Matchmaker, which she signs him up for without his approval.

Then we meet Cath’s daughter, Lauren, and wouldn’t you know it, her mom also signed her up for the same dating app. They end up getting paired together.

Lauren and Shane meet for coffee, but it doesn’t start well. Shane overhears Lauren talking to a friend, complaining about going on a blind date her mother set her up for. However, they end up hitting it off while discussing their mothers. Shane tells Lauren he plans to sell his theater business, but he’s feeling super stressed. To keep their mothers off their backs, they agree to pretend to date for the holidays.

Unfortunately, both moms want to meet their children’s special someone. They decide to meet at a Christmas festival, and they’re both clearly disappointed that their kids ended up together. They conclude that the only logical thing to do is sabotage the relationship.

So Barbara and Cath quickly devise a plan to break them up. After learning that Shane isn’t very handy, Cath has an idea: invite him to help pick out a Christmas tree with her and Lauren, forcing Shane to figure out how to get the tree on the car himself. However, the plan backfires when Shane and Lauren end up failing together. When they finally get the tree home, they discover there’s a rat inside. Shane is terrified of the rat, but Cath asks him to get it out, which he does, impressing Lauren. Plan failed.

Next, Barbara comes up with another idea: invite Lauren to one of Shane’s shows. She hopes Shane will get upset if he thinks Lauren is pushing for the relationship to work. Plus, Lauren has bad stage fright, so when Shane invites her on stage for a quirky improv Christmas Carol, Barbara is excited. To her surprise, Lauren ends up having fun and is really impressed with the show.

When their plans don’t work, Barbara climbs through a window to convince the volunteer playing Santa to come out after he locks himself in a room because he’s scared. Cath and Barbara work together to encourage him to get out there.

They realize they make a pretty good team and need to work together to break up these two lovebirds. They decide to start hanging out, acting like they love each other, and really push this “big happy family” narrative in hopes of freaking Shane and Lauren out. However, they notice that Shane and Lauren might actually be good for each other—Lauren encourages Shane to go all in on theater, and he helps her step out of her comfort zone.

While on a trolley, singing Christmas carols, Shane and Lauren both admit they’re actually falling for each other and agree to go to the Christmas Ball together.

Barbara finds out that the relationship is fake but assumes it’s one-sided to get her off Shane’s back. She tells Cath, who gets really mad and advises Lauren to break things off with Shane because he’s a bad guy.

At the ball, everything comes to a head when Barbara and Cath confront Lauren and Shane about the fake relationship. Lauren freaks out and ends things with Shane due to all the drama. Barbara and Cath start arguing at the ball, and Barbara quits the committee.

Barbara’s husband, who hates being around her during this turmoil, encourages her to fix things with Cath. They make up and decide to work together to get Shane and Lauren back together.

Cath shows up at Lauren’s workplace to apologize for meddling, and Barbara does the same with Shane.

Lauren and Shane decide to give their relationship another chance, and they kiss! The families then spend Christmas together, which seems a bit fast. They kiss some more and sing songs.

[00:00:01] Hi, I'm Brandon. I love Hallmark Christmas movies. I'm Brian. I like Hallmark Christmas movies. I'm Dan and I despise Hallmark Christmas movies. I'm Justin and I'm just happy to be here. And this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast. Deck The Hallmark, it's this podcast. Friends host this podcast. We hope you like this jolly podcast. To be honest, Justin, that felt forced. It felt like all those songs against your will.

[00:00:39] Are you really happy to be here?

[00:00:41] No, I'm thrilled to be here. I feel like I look forward to, I always think in my mind, I'm not going to get the call this year. Like they're done with me. I'm flaky. I really am like a bad Christmas boyfriend, but you guys, you keep bringing me back and I needed this dopamine hit earlier in the year than usual. So I'm grateful to be here right here at the top of November.

[00:01:02] It's your seventh year in a row, Justin.

[00:01:04] Shut up. Is it?

[00:01:05] Yes.

[00:01:06] Seventh year in a row.

[00:01:08] That means that we are common law Christmas married.

[00:01:11] That's right. We're common law Christmas married. Finally. That's how that works.

[00:01:15] Write that movie title down too.

[00:01:16] Yeah, right.

[00:01:17] You write it down.

[00:01:19] Starring my grandmother, Beth Broderick.

[00:01:23] That's right.

[00:01:24] Your great grandmother.

[00:01:25] It's going to be great.

[00:01:26] It's going to be great.

[00:01:28] We are excited to talk about Holiday Mismatch.

[00:01:31] I said, pick your poison.

[00:01:33] You picked this poison.

[00:01:34] Why do you, why do you pick? What about this big Sabrina the Teenage Witch fan?

[00:01:39] I, well, I have quite a storied history with both Beth Broderick and Caroline Ray.

[00:01:45] Caroline Ray and Beth Broderick.

[00:01:47] See how many times I can say their names.

[00:01:50] Both stars of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which I grew up on.

[00:01:56] When I became enamored with competition reality, before that harlot, Alison Sweeney snuck in, Caroline Ray used to host The Biggest Loser.

[00:02:06] Oh my God.

[00:02:08] Beth Broderick.

[00:02:09] Kate Austin's mom on Lost, which I'm currently in the middle of a rewatch of.

[00:02:13] These women, I feel like I might know them, nay, love them more than my own mother.

[00:02:19] Oh.

[00:02:20] That's not true.

[00:02:21] Sorry, Kate.

[00:02:22] Wow.

[00:02:23] But no, I love them.

[00:02:24] I think they're great.

[00:02:25] So I was, I was jazzed when I was, it was between this one and the one that like is painfully forcing the Chiefs into everything.

[00:02:33] What?

[00:02:34] So it's, I'm grateful.

[00:02:36] I'm grateful that you guys let me tag along for this one.

[00:02:38] Yeah.

[00:02:39] Also though, Justin, a couple of things there.

[00:02:41] Alison Sweeney's a harlot.

[00:02:42] That's Justin's words, not ours.

[00:02:50] He's just a guest and also someone on the network.

[00:02:52] That's right.

[00:02:52] He's on the network.

[00:02:53] He's done a Bramble Jam podcast.

[00:02:54] It's a whole two.

[00:02:55] In fact, uh, let me clear.

[00:02:58] Go ahead.

[00:02:58] Let me clear the air on the Alison Sweeney slander for a second.

[00:03:02] It's been a very heated minute since you said that.

[00:03:05] So yeah, I'd like for you to go ahead and.

[00:03:07] I worshiped at the altar of Sammy Brady on days of our lives.

[00:03:11] Yeah.

[00:03:11] Between the years of 1999 and like 2004.

[00:03:15] So when this is like internet slang, that's harlot in parentheses complimentary.

[00:03:21] Yes.

[00:03:21] Complimentary.

[00:03:22] I did see them.

[00:03:23] Don't get it twisted.

[00:03:24] That's right.

[00:03:25] Uh, Justin, you are currently on a Bramble Jam podcast still ongoing.

[00:03:28] It's called John Dutton must die.

[00:03:30] Um, hot, hot, hot.

[00:03:31] We, uh, the latest episodes have been, the reviews are off the charts.

[00:03:38] Uh, what has been your favorite part of the, of the episodes over the past year?

[00:03:44] Have you done one this year?

[00:03:45] No.

[00:03:46] I feel like this episode is getting as tense as quality mismatch, but we'll, we'll get

[00:03:51] into that in a second.

[00:03:52] Um, yeah.

[00:03:54] If you guys have caught up on all the Yellowstone episodes over the past year, you'll know that

[00:03:58] there hasn't been one, um, but they're, they're wrapping it up.

[00:04:03] Yeah.

[00:04:04] And it turns out, Dan, you and I kind of predicted this.

[00:04:08] We did.

[00:04:08] Because John Dutton must die and spoiler alert.

[00:04:12] He's going to be on the final episodes.

[00:04:14] So yeah.

[00:04:16] And I don't think he went on like a eat, pray, love kind of retreat.

[00:04:20] No, no, no, no, no, no.

[00:04:21] He's, he's dead somewhere.

[00:04:22] Right.

[00:04:23] He's dead on the ranch.

[00:04:24] They buried him in the rain.

[00:04:26] Obviously.

[00:04:26] Yeah.

[00:04:26] For sure.

[00:04:27] They buried him.

[00:04:27] They buried him.

[00:04:28] Yeah.

[00:04:28] Um, maybe alive.

[00:04:30] Justin, this is, this is a lot of fun.

[00:04:31] And we know you listen to every episode of Dug the Homer.

[00:04:33] It gets your favorite show and all that stuff.

[00:04:36] So you know about our card game, Christmas movie magic.

[00:04:38] Yeah.

[00:04:39] And so I'm going to let you explain it and like, let everybody know why they should pick

[00:04:44] up a copy of Christmas movie magic.

[00:04:46] Um, Christmas movie magic, the card game that you play while watching the movie.

[00:04:49] Yeah.

[00:04:49] Yeah.

[00:04:49] So you go ahead.

[00:04:50] You go ahead.

[00:04:51] Cause I know you have your copy.

[00:04:52] You've been playing.

[00:04:53] Yeah.

[00:04:54] Yeah.

[00:04:54] Every week.

[00:04:54] Yeah.

[00:04:55] Every single episode.

[00:04:56] I have a couple copies so that I can give them out to family.

[00:04:59] All right.

[00:05:00] Let me start like this.

[00:05:00] Have you ever done tarot?

[00:05:02] If you've, it's kind of like that, but take out all of the witchy elements.

[00:05:08] Yeah.

[00:05:09] Keep all of the fun.

[00:05:10] Um, if you are a fan of Christmas movies of this genre, particularly those, uh, on Hallmark,

[00:05:18] it is something that you should own, uh, after a couple of, uh, glasses of mulled wine or

[00:05:24] wassail, as you might call it, you whip this out.

[00:05:28] It's gonna, it's gonna entertain, uh, your friends and family for days.

[00:05:33] Um, I'm not going to describe it to you because learning how to play the game is half the

[00:05:38] fun.

[00:05:38] It is.

[00:05:38] Sure.

[00:05:39] So, uh, be sure, be sure and get a deck, uh, so that you can deck the Hallmark, even

[00:05:45] when the episodes have run out.

[00:05:47] Wow.

[00:05:48] And that's good.

[00:05:48] That is good.

[00:05:49] And that's deck the hallmark.com slash game.

[00:05:51] That's right.

[00:05:52] Correct.

[00:05:53] Sure.

[00:05:53] Yeah.

[00:05:54] It's the harlot of the Christmas movie.

[00:05:57] Allison Sweeney as a harlot is one of the cards in the deck from what I understand.

[00:06:00] That's one of the ones that come over from the tarot cards.

[00:06:03] Allison and I, Allie, as I call it sometimes, um, we were, we were playing the game last

[00:06:08] night.

[00:06:08] Wow.

[00:06:09] Amazing.

[00:06:10] Honestly, you did a great job.

[00:06:11] Christmas movie magic out now deck the hallmark.com slash, uh, game.

[00:06:14] It's the perfect game to play while you're watching these movies, including holiday mismatch,

[00:06:19] uh, which is what we're going to be talking about today.

[00:06:22] Are we ready to dive in?

[00:06:23] Let's do it.

[00:06:24] Um, it originally, uh, premiered on the hallmark channel on November 3rd, 2024.

[00:06:29] And it went a little something like this.

[00:06:30] Barbara is a newly retired retiree, uh, and, uh, is really into keeping the house clean.

[00:06:38] That's what she's focusing on right now.

[00:06:40] She needs herself a project.

[00:06:42] Uh, she decides to join a Christmas committee.

[00:06:45] The meeting is supposed to start at 9 a.m., but when she arrives, no one is there.

[00:06:50] 10 minutes, 10 minutes later, the group leader, Kath, shows up and says, oh yeah, it's a flexible

[00:06:56] nine, uh, which is how I think we should all live our lives a little bit.

[00:07:00] Um, the rest of the committee arrives and we should live our lives that way.

[00:07:04] That was a weird soft nine.

[00:07:06] Yeah.

[00:07:06] I guess I don't agree with that.

[00:07:07] Very weird.

[00:07:08] From you.

[00:07:08] It's a soft nine.

[00:07:09] Weird, weird place for you to be.

[00:07:11] I aspire to be like, to be more flexible.

[00:07:13] Yeah.

[00:07:14] Um, and unfortunately no can do.

[00:07:16] And everybody in this committee, there is quite the character.

[00:07:19] Barbara is clearly annoyed by this fly by night committee.

[00:07:22] Uh, when the opportunity arises for her, for her to head up the committee budget, she jumps

[00:07:28] at it, but she's shocked to discover that Kath has just been keeping the receipts in a

[00:07:33] literal shoe box.

[00:07:35] Um, but she has been keeping them in chronological order.

[00:07:41] Really?

[00:07:41] What's to be shocked on here?

[00:07:42] It's actually really good.

[00:07:43] Pretty helpful.

[00:07:44] Yeah.

[00:07:44] Uh, we meet Barbara's son, Shane.

[00:07:46] She thinks that he is lonely.

[00:07:50] I'm lonely.

[00:07:51] Where is it?

[00:07:52] Where is it?

[00:07:52] Give it up.

[00:07:53] Give it up.

[00:07:53] We lost it.

[00:07:53] Give it up.

[00:07:54] Give it up.

[00:07:54] She thinks he's lonely.

[00:07:56] Oh, you can't hear it with that.

[00:07:58] It's a little bit.

[00:07:58] That's fine.

[00:08:00] It's okay.

[00:08:00] It's not worth it.

[00:08:01] It's there.

[00:08:01] We'll play it later, everybody.

[00:08:03] It's really funny.

[00:08:04] I can't stop.

[00:08:05] I'm lonely.

[00:08:06] Okay, great.

[00:08:07] There we go.

[00:08:07] Um, so, um, she's lonely.

[00:08:10] He's lonely.

[00:08:11] And so she wants to find him a date.

[00:08:13] Things are going great.

[00:08:14] Uh, wants to find a date for the holidays using an app called Holiday Matchmaker, which

[00:08:19] she signs him up for without his approval, which is apparently like the whole point of

[00:08:23] the app, if I'm understanding it correctly.

[00:08:25] You sign your friends and family up for this app.

[00:08:28] Uh, then we meet, uh, Kath's daughter, Lauren.

[00:08:31] And wouldn't you know it?

[00:08:32] Her mom also signed her up for the same dating app.

[00:08:35] They end up getting paired together.

[00:08:38] Lauren and Shane meet for coffee, but it doesn't start well when Shane overhears Lauren talking

[00:08:43] about, uh, going on a dumb old blast, a stupid blonde date.

[00:08:49] Blind date.

[00:08:50] Blind date, Brooke.

[00:08:51] That's right.

[00:08:51] However, they end up hitting it off while discussing their mothers and how their moms are both overbearing.

[00:08:58] Shane tells Lauren that he plans to sell his theater business, but he's feeling super stressed

[00:09:04] about it.

[00:09:05] Uh, so to keep their mothers off their backs this holiday season, they agree to pretend

[00:09:10] to date for the holidays.

[00:09:13] Unfortunately, both moms want to meet their children's special someone.

[00:09:17] They decide to meet up at a Christmas festival and they're, uh, both clearly disappointed that

[00:09:23] their kids have ended up together with each other.

[00:09:26] You get it.

[00:09:27] They don't like each other and they're bummed.

[00:09:29] Uh, they conclude that the only logical thing for these two to do is to sabotage the relationship

[00:09:36] beastie boys style.

[00:09:38] So Barbara and Kath quickly devise a plan to break them up.

[00:09:43] After learning that Shane isn't very handy, Kath has an idea.

[00:09:48] Invite him to help pick out a Christmas tree with her and Lauren, forcing Shane to figure

[00:09:53] out how to put a tree on a car by himself.

[00:09:56] However, the plan backfires when Shane and Lauren work together and they end up failing

[00:10:01] together.

[00:10:01] And everyone knows a couple that fails together stays together.

[00:10:04] Um, I think that's the saying.

[00:10:06] When, when they finally get the tree home, they discover there's a rat inside.

[00:10:11] Shane is terrified of the rat, but Kath asks him to get it out.

[00:10:16] Get it out.

[00:10:17] Get it.

[00:10:17] Um, and he does it, which impresses Lauren.

[00:10:20] Plan failed.

[00:10:21] Next, Barbara comes up with another idea.

[00:10:23] Invite Lauren to one of Shane's shows.

[00:10:26] That'll do the trick.

[00:10:28] But also she hopes that Shane will be upset if he thinks that, uh, that, uh, she is pushing

[00:10:34] Lauren and the relationship to work.

[00:10:36] Plus Lauren has bad stage fright.

[00:10:39] And so when Shane invites her on stage for this super normal improv Christmas Carol, Barbara

[00:10:45] is excited.

[00:10:46] But to her surprise, Lauren ends up having fun and is really impressed with the show.

[00:10:53] That makes one of us.

[00:10:55] When their plans don't work, Barbara climbs through a window to convince the volunteer

[00:11:01] playing Santa to come out after he locks himself in a room because he's scared.

[00:11:06] Kath and Barbara realize, Hey, we work pretty well together.

[00:11:09] You know, you helping me get out that window and then us talking about it.

[00:11:14] Maybe we should work together instead of working separately.

[00:11:19] And so, uh, they come up with an idea.

[00:11:22] And basically the idea is what if we all come together and we act like one big happy family

[00:11:27] and then they will, will be like, Oh, you guys are going to get married one day and that'll

[00:11:31] freak them out and they'll break up.

[00:11:33] However, they noticed that Shane and Lauren might actually be good for each other.

[00:11:37] Lauren encourages Shane to, uh, go all in on the theater.

[00:11:41] It's a bad idea, man.

[00:11:43] And he tells her to step out of her comfort zone.

[00:11:46] Um, while on a trolley singing Christmas carols, Dan's worst nightmare, Shane and Lauren both

[00:11:53] admit that they're actually falling for each other and they agree to go to the Christmas

[00:11:57] ball together.

[00:11:58] Barbara finds out that the relationship is fake, but assumes it's a one-sided fake, uh, to get

[00:12:05] Shane, uh, to get off Shane's back.

[00:12:07] She tells Cath who gets really mad and tells Lauren that she should break things off with

[00:12:13] Shane because he's a really bad guy at the ball.

[00:12:17] Everything comes to a head when Barbara and Cath confront Lauren and Shane about the fake

[00:12:21] relationship.

[00:12:22] Lauren freaks out and ends things with Shane due to all of the drama, uh, Barbara and

[00:12:28] Cath start arguing at the ball and Barbara quits the committee.

[00:12:32] Barbara's husband, who I can only imagine hates being alone with her, uh, encourages her to

[00:12:38] fix things with Cath and get the heck out of the house.

[00:12:42] They make up and decide to work together to get Shane and Lauren back together.

[00:12:47] Cath shows up at Lauren's, uh, work to apologize for meddling and Barbara does the same with

[00:12:53] Shane.

[00:12:53] Lauren and Shane decide to give their relationship another chance and they kiss and the families

[00:12:59] then spend Christmas together, which once again for the second time this week seems a little

[00:13:03] fast.

[00:13:04] They kiss and they sing some more songs.

[00:13:07] And that my friends was holiday mismatch.

[00:13:13] We did it.

[00:13:14] We did do it.

[00:13:15] Let's take a quick break.

[00:13:16] We'll come back and we'll, uh, break this movie down a little bit more with Justin Kirkland

[00:13:21] here on deck, the hallmark, uh, you know, what's great.

[00:13:33] Uh, you know, what's great about having Justin Kirkland on the show is how, um, he just really

[00:13:39] puts on a show.

[00:13:40] He made a face.

[00:13:42] He did a thing for people that are watching on file.

[00:13:44] They really get a show.

[00:13:46] If you're not, you're missing out.

[00:13:47] Yeah.

[00:13:48] Yeah.

[00:13:48] I've always said, Oh, you got a face for TV.

[00:13:52] That stash isn't hurting anything.

[00:13:55] No, no.

[00:13:55] Come on.

[00:13:57] I thank you for that.

[00:13:59] I would like to say that it's something I didn't know, but I too call myself a flexible

[00:14:03] nine.

[00:14:04] So yeah, you're welcome.

[00:14:07] Uh, let's get to, uh, the hot take is where we share exactly how we felt about this movie.

[00:14:13] We do not hold back.

[00:14:14] Brian final movie of the weekend.

[00:14:17] First movie in your heart.

[00:14:18] Let's find out.

[00:14:18] What'd you think about this movie?

[00:14:20] Yeah.

[00:14:20] Holy mismatch.

[00:14:21] Uh, that's the one we're going to do right now.

[00:14:24] Yes.

[00:14:24] I'm going to do it.

[00:14:25] Um, I liked it.

[00:14:26] This is a good weekend for me, for these movies.

[00:14:29] I feel like you just said, you've said, I liked it for three of them.

[00:14:31] I think I've said it all season long.

[00:14:32] So far, Dan, I liked it.

[00:14:34] I liked it.

[00:14:34] I feel like, um, I'm just doing the repeater over here, but the movies have been good.

[00:14:38] There's nothing I can do.

[00:14:40] Um, this was pretty funny.

[00:14:41] Like this is a fun premise.

[00:14:42] This was like a little more layered than we usually get.

[00:14:45] I feel like we got the fake relationship.

[00:14:47] The mothers are meddling.

[00:14:49] They're trying to break them up.

[00:14:50] They're trying to get them together.

[00:14:51] I thought that was really fun.

[00:14:52] And it was really funny.

[00:14:54] Like there were some really funny moments.

[00:14:56] Uh, Carol, uh, Caroline Ray just stood out in this movie above, not above everybody.

[00:15:01] Everybody was really good, but she just carried this movie and it was so strong.

[00:15:05] Um, I feel like the, this would have been, I would have appreciated a little more details

[00:15:10] on the budget.

[00:15:11] Again, I feel like, again, stop me if you've heard this this week already, a little more

[00:15:16] budget was a big concern here.

[00:15:17] I just wish there were more spreadsheets.

[00:15:19] What's the problem with the budget?

[00:15:20] Like she's so all about the budget.

[00:15:23] Uh, ABC, all about that budget.

[00:15:25] What's wrong with the budget?

[00:15:26] Like I'd love some, yeah.

[00:15:28] ABC always be budgeting.

[00:15:29] Um, and brother Aiden, mama's boy of the week, obviously just tattling on his brother.

[00:15:34] That's tough.

[00:15:35] Can't stand that.

[00:15:36] So messed up.

[00:15:36] Come on, man.

[00:15:36] Can we really quickly talk about how he's the absolute worst brother?

[00:15:42] Unbelievable.

[00:15:42] I had nothing but positive things to say about Aiden.

[00:15:45] And then he comes up and he, he fesses up and he gives him so.

[00:15:49] The worst thing imaginable.

[00:15:50] That was messed up, right, Justin?

[00:15:52] No, it was exactly what he had coming to him.

[00:15:56] I know this is a spicy take, but like, don't trust a homosexual with your secrets.

[00:16:03] I say it as one myself.

[00:16:05] As a flexible mind, you know.

[00:16:07] As a, as a flexible mind and a known homosexual, don't tell me a secret.

[00:16:12] I'm just going to go and run.

[00:16:14] So as soon as that came out of his mouth, I looked over at my husband.

[00:16:16] I was like, oh, he's going to pay for that.

[00:16:18] And then like a snap later, he was like, mom, I got to tell you something.

[00:16:24] I can't tell you.

[00:16:25] Okay.

[00:16:25] I'll tell you.

[00:16:26] That's great.

[00:16:26] What the heck was that?

[00:16:28] Yeah.

[00:16:28] He showed up and was like.

[00:16:29] It's not like he even came up in conversation.

[00:16:31] He just rolled in to tell him.

[00:16:32] He was like, it's crazy.

[00:16:33] This situation that's going on with a guy right now.

[00:16:36] Don't make me tell you.

[00:16:36] Oh, you don't know about the situation?

[00:16:38] I couldn't.

[00:16:39] I must.

[00:16:40] It was the worst.

[00:16:41] Roderick was, Beth was like, what do you want for dinner?

[00:16:44] And he was like, I'm not really sure.

[00:16:45] Your son's a liar.

[00:16:50] I would have bought it more if she had, she sort of made it feel like he was the mama's

[00:16:55] boy.

[00:16:56] If she were like, made like set this up a little bit ahead of hand, ahead of time, ahead

[00:17:00] of hand that he, that this is what he did.

[00:17:03] And this was like their relationship.

[00:17:04] I think that's the thing.

[00:17:05] Out of nowhere.

[00:17:06] I just think that once you adult, once you become an adult, there's like, if you're,

[00:17:13] if you're not good at keeping secrets, that's fine.

[00:17:15] But between siblings, siblings, there's, there's something there, an unbreakable bond

[00:17:20] that's coming back to you.

[00:17:21] Like it can't, you can't just cut.

[00:17:24] And he didn't, he didn't tell off his brother at all.

[00:17:27] We never got the conversation where he was like, Hey man, bro.

[00:17:34] It's messed up.

[00:17:34] That's all I'm totally messed up.

[00:17:35] Uh, Justin, what'd you think about the movie?

[00:17:38] So I enjoyed it.

[00:17:40] It was wildly tense.

[00:17:42] Wasn't it?

[00:17:43] Mm-hmm.

[00:17:43] Am I just like in a weird space or was there like a lot of tension in this film?

[00:17:48] First off, none of these people have good, healthy relationships.

[00:17:51] I feel like that was, that was dicey to begin with.

[00:17:55] Like tattling all, all jokes and secrets aside.

[00:17:58] Like if you have a secret, keep it.

[00:18:00] Uh, but I feel like nobody had anybody's best interest in this film.

[00:18:05] And, and it was, there was a lot of tension.

[00:18:07] So I wouldn't say, I wouldn't say it was my favorite.

[00:18:09] I watched it to relax and I think I got a little amped up alongside him.

[00:18:13] There was, there was a lot going on.

[00:18:14] Uh, I agree with you, um, Justin.

[00:18:17] I, this is not the worst movie of the season, but it is my least favorite of the season because

[00:18:22] of that very reason.

[00:18:23] It wasn't an enjoyable watch.

[00:18:25] It was stressful.

[00:18:26] I don't like the meddling parents trope.

[00:18:30] And this is, I think as egregious of a meddling mom trope that as we've seen.

[00:18:37] And I realized pretty quickly, I don't like it.

[00:18:40] It doesn't make me feel good.

[00:18:42] I don't find it particularly funny.

[00:18:44] Um, and, uh, the only saving grace of this movie is I did like the couple.

[00:18:50] I, uh, when they were together and albeit they only have a few actual conversations

[00:18:56] that we get to see in this movie, but I thought they had chemistry and I liked them together.

[00:19:01] Um, was it fun to see Caroline Ray and Beth Roderick back together?

[00:19:05] I guess, but I guess I just wish that it was in a different way.

[00:19:11] I wish maybe they were sisters and they were having a story.

[00:19:15] Like, I don't know.

[00:19:16] I just didn't like the meddling mom thing.

[00:19:19] It just didn't do it for me.

[00:19:21] It didn't make me feel good.

[00:19:23] And even with the Hallmark Christmas movies that end up being sad, I, I at least walk

[00:19:29] away being like, okay, that still worked for me.

[00:19:31] This one, it just, it was messy and it was icky.

[00:19:34] And I know that Alonzo loves a dysfunctional family and I could go either way on it, depending

[00:19:41] on the movie.

[00:19:42] But when it's dysfunctional and the dysfunction leads to just the parents meddling.

[00:19:48] I just, I, it didn't make me feel good.

[00:19:51] And so unfortunately it is my least favorite of the season.

[00:19:54] I'm sorry.

[00:19:55] Dan, I'm not sorry.

[00:19:57] This is a bad movie.

[00:19:58] I look, it's not as out and out bad as the Austrian movie.

[00:20:02] I think we can all agree on that.

[00:20:03] But I do think that the expectations here do damage the movie because the expectations

[00:20:10] are Caroline Ray and Beth Broderick comedy hijinks to follow.

[00:20:15] And they just don't follow.

[00:20:17] I like the idea of this movie is really good.

[00:20:19] But instead of getting a fun, funny movie, instead we get a movie where for most of the

[00:20:25] movie, it's either people being really terrible to their relatives and their friends, or it's

[00:20:30] people explaining the plot of the movie.

[00:20:32] Like there are so many resets in this movie.

[00:20:36] It's like, we're going to fake like we're a couple.

[00:20:37] So our moms get off our backs.

[00:20:39] And then the moms are like, we got to break them up.

[00:20:41] And the moms are like, we got to get them together.

[00:20:43] It is every, I felt like every third scene was, let me remind you the viewer where we

[00:20:49] are in this farce so that we can keep it moving.

[00:20:53] I didn't care about far.

[00:20:55] No, I didn't say fart.

[00:20:56] If you can believe it, I said, what if he did?

[00:20:58] What if I did though?

[00:21:00] It'd be really funny.

[00:21:02] I just thought, I think Caroline Ray was really, really fun and funny in this movie,

[00:21:07] but the movie doesn't does everyone in it a disservice and there's just too much going

[00:21:12] on and none of it's really funny.

[00:21:13] And instead, as Justin pointed out, it plays kind of tense and uncomfortable and not in

[00:21:19] a funny way.

[00:21:20] It just isn't a good movie.

[00:21:21] And I think if it was all stars, we didn't know, then it would be this low, low middle

[00:21:27] of the pack.

[00:21:28] But because it's a reunion of Sabrina, the teenage witch and all this other stuff, it

[00:21:34] kind of hurts the movie.

[00:21:36] I think aside from the Austrian movie and some of the ones of the summer, this is the worst

[00:21:40] of the year.

[00:21:41] I was really disappointed by this.

[00:21:43] It's time for all the feels where we talk about what this movie gave us feels, Brian.

[00:21:47] Yeah, I liked Brian.

[00:21:49] Thanks, Brian.

[00:21:50] When Shane and Lauren decide they're going to do the fake relationship, they start kind

[00:21:54] of pointing out all the reasons that they won't work, the things they don't like.

[00:21:57] And I thought that was really great.

[00:21:59] They're being very open and honest with each other and they're themselves from the start.

[00:22:05] And so I thought that was a really great way to start off a relationship, especially

[00:22:08] starting with a fake relationship.

[00:22:10] It makes it a really easy segue into like a real full blown relationship because you

[00:22:14] already know, like you actually genuinely like that person.

[00:22:17] They were honest with you.

[00:22:18] They weren't trying to impress you.

[00:22:19] So I thought that was really cool.

[00:22:20] I'll buy that.

[00:22:21] Thank you.

[00:22:22] Uh, Justin.

[00:22:23] That'll be 20 bucks.

[00:22:23] Any feels for you?

[00:22:25] Yeah.

[00:22:26] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:22:27] I feel like I want to kind of step back a little bit because I feel like we're being

[00:22:30] very hard on this film.

[00:22:32] And I would like to reference the, I think it's a Mr. Rogers quote when there's like

[00:22:38] problems, look for the helpers.

[00:22:40] And when you come across a movie that makes you feel like this, you gotta look, you gotta

[00:22:44] look for the helpers.

[00:22:45] So one of my, all the feels was at the end.

[00:22:47] I don't know if you guys caught it.

[00:22:48] Uh, but they were talking about like being out in the sun or something.

[00:22:53] And I think it's Caroline way Ray looks at, uh, Beth Broderick and goes, what are you

[00:22:58] a witch?

[00:22:59] Yeah.

[00:22:59] And I was like, Oh, Oh, coming straight from my heart there.

[00:23:03] And I want to tell you a short anecdote that will only take 20 minutes.

[00:23:09] When I was growing up, I desperately begged my parents for, um, two, well, three gifts.

[00:23:16] One was a skip it, never got it.

[00:23:19] Uh, one was a sky dancer because you can launch that woman like 8,000 feet in the air.

[00:23:24] Isn't that the dream?

[00:23:26] The dream.

[00:23:27] I, today, you know where I want to go?

[00:23:29] 8,000 feet in the air.

[00:23:31] That's right.

[00:23:31] Yeah.

[00:23:32] Just launch me out there.

[00:23:34] The other one was the very important easy bake oven.

[00:23:39] So when Caroline Ray's talking about like, I too wanted an easy bake oven as a child.

[00:23:44] And then Barbara, despite their differences, gets it for her.

[00:23:48] I was like, you're coming for my feelings and I love it.

[00:23:51] That was a good one.

[00:23:51] And then I, I went and I, I baked muffins right after.

[00:23:55] Wow.

[00:23:55] What kind of muffins?

[00:23:56] Yeah.

[00:23:57] Tiny.

[00:23:57] I lied.

[00:23:57] I didn't even bake muffins.

[00:23:59] Come on.

[00:23:59] Cooking with Justin, everybody.

[00:24:00] All you have to do is tell the truth, Justin.

[00:24:02] This movie's about life.

[00:24:03] Yeah.

[00:24:04] So did you, did you ever make little, little tiny muffins though?

[00:24:09] Like in your life?

[00:24:09] This is a, well, the reason that I asked, uh, what kind of muffins is Justin has an Instagram

[00:24:14] account called cooking with Justin.

[00:24:15] You should follow.

[00:24:16] He's making some world-class food.

[00:24:19] At least the pictures are world-class.

[00:24:21] I mean, they're like, the food looks amazing and Justin's really good at it.

[00:24:25] So if he tells me he made muffins, I'm going to, there's going to be a follow up.

[00:24:28] 100%.

[00:24:29] No, no lies this year.

[00:24:31] I've been dabbling with a, uh, chocolate chip bourbon muffin recipe.

[00:24:35] Yeah.

[00:24:35] Yeah.

[00:24:36] I like that.

[00:24:36] And that's, that's the one.

[00:24:39] And I've found really the trick.

[00:24:40] What are we going to do?

[00:24:41] What are we going to do?

[00:24:43] We're going to bring you down.

[00:24:44] Well, the trick of it is that instead of putting the bourbon just in the muffins, I do like

[00:24:50] full on, like shot of bourbon in the glaze.

[00:24:54] Oh, in the glaze.

[00:24:54] Okay.

[00:24:55] Okay.

[00:24:55] And then you dip it in.

[00:24:56] Yeah.

[00:24:57] And then I just drink from the bottle after that.

[00:24:59] That's right.

[00:24:59] Obviously.

[00:24:59] Obviously.

[00:25:01] I'll be down in Greenville in, uh, in a couple of minutes.

[00:25:04] I'll whip some of those up.

[00:25:05] How about that?

[00:25:06] I was going to ask you, uh, when you're coming to Greenville, cause you came last year

[00:25:10] for fall for Greenville.

[00:25:11] That's right.

[00:25:12] And if memory serves, you absolutely loved it.

[00:25:16] So what's the holdup?

[00:25:17] What do we, I mean, what do we got to do to get you down here?

[00:25:20] I'm torn between the throes of my big city job and the ideal of, uh, falling in love in a,

[00:25:29] in a, in a smaller town and, and just trying to find someone that'll keep me there.

[00:25:34] So again, I'm looking directly into my camera at Dan.

[00:25:38] Yeah.

[00:25:38] Um, Hey, just, I mean, the, the muffins are going to play a big part, part in this.

[00:25:44] Justin is all I'm saying for all of us.

[00:25:46] You can't be lying about.

[00:25:47] Well, I think part of the problem.

[00:25:48] And then try to come from my heart.

[00:25:49] There's nothing that you're lying about muffins.

[00:25:53] I'll tell you this.

[00:25:54] An easy bake oven shows up at my door.

[00:25:56] I will know that the invitation is more than open.

[00:25:59] Yeah.

[00:26:00] Yeah.

[00:26:00] But also your, your husband didn't come to Greenville with, with you.

[00:26:04] Yeah.

[00:26:04] True.

[00:26:05] No, we did not.

[00:26:06] So I think that, I mean, I don't know.

[00:26:10] We're also still facing the high of, uh, how Greenville was described when, uh, Christmas

[00:26:16] is in, in full effect.

[00:26:18] Yeah.

[00:26:18] Cause you guys have like, uh, a little ice skating rink that pops up like downtown.

[00:26:24] That's right.

[00:26:24] It becomes this wonderland.

[00:26:25] So I want to see that.

[00:26:27] All right.

[00:26:27] We'll make it happen.

[00:26:29] And you'll bring them up.

[00:26:30] Yeah.

[00:26:30] That would be a pretty good, pretty good vlog.

[00:26:33] As you coming down for Christmas and us showing you the city, I think it'd be pretty

[00:26:36] good.

[00:26:38] I promise no lies.

[00:26:40] I will bring the muffins.

[00:26:42] I love that.

[00:26:42] Oh, he's not lying guys.

[00:26:44] I have two feels one.

[00:26:45] It was mentioned in the chat, but Caroline Ray's a cardigan game.

[00:26:48] And this movie was on point.

[00:26:49] I noticed it.

[00:26:50] I saw you and I really liked it.

[00:26:52] Uh, but two, there was a scene where Caroline Ray helps, uh, Beth Broderick go through a

[00:26:58] tiny window above a door and was it necessary?

[00:27:03] A riot.

[00:27:04] Was it necessary?

[00:27:05] No, it was not, but it happened.

[00:27:07] And I loved it.

[00:27:09] I loved that moment.

[00:27:10] And it made me very happy.

[00:27:12] Um, because I kind of in the, in the midst of it happening, forgot why it was happening.

[00:27:17] Yeah.

[00:27:18] I forgot about the Santa.

[00:27:20] That's right.

[00:27:20] Cause it takes a little bit.

[00:27:21] It does.

[00:27:22] And then by the time they, you know.

[00:27:23] When somebody's in there, I was like, why didn't they just knock on the door?

[00:27:25] Yeah.

[00:27:26] I forgot.

[00:27:26] Same thing.

[00:27:26] I used to say, yeah, it happened.

[00:27:28] They did it.

[00:27:28] It just took so long.

[00:27:30] And that, and that's how, you know, it's a good comedy bit.

[00:27:32] If you forget, if you get to the end of the bit and you forgot why you started in

[00:27:35] the first place, ain't that the dream?

[00:27:38] That's why we started this show, baby.

[00:27:39] Uh, so, uh, yeah, really enjoyed that moment.

[00:27:42] Dano.

[00:27:43] Uh, yeah, you mentioned it in your hot take, but for all of that, this movie does wrong.

[00:27:48] I thought that the couple that is getting together throughout this movie, I thought they were

[00:27:53] pretty okay.

[00:27:54] Like I thought that if they would have had more time together and it would have been a more

[00:27:58] straightforward movie, I don't know that it would have been as bad as it was.

[00:28:02] It's weird to say that out loud that the Caroline Ray, Beth Broderick of it all is the part

[00:28:07] that doesn't work.

[00:28:07] But I thought that the couple who are C and D on the call sheet, I thought they were, they

[00:28:13] were bad.

[00:28:14] So it's a high praise.

[00:28:16] There you go.

[00:28:16] Uh, let's take a quick break.

[00:28:18] We'll come back.

[00:28:18] We'll get to the way.

[00:28:19] Well, the what the hallmark key Ron.

[00:28:20] Deck the Hallmark.

[00:28:31] Welcome back everybody.

[00:28:32] It is, uh, it's Deck the Hallmark.

[00:28:34] It's a Thursday.

[00:28:35] Is that what we're doing?

[00:28:36] I, uh, by the way, I got word.

[00:28:38] Uh, we made the announcement about who won the election yesterday.

[00:28:42] Yesterday.

[00:28:42] Apparently people didn't hear that.

[00:28:43] Didn't hear it.

[00:28:44] So you want to do it again today at the end?

[00:28:45] Well, I mean, I, I mean, we have time.

[00:28:47] We could let Justin do the honors, but I don't know.

[00:28:49] I don't know.

[00:28:49] This is pretty stressful stuff.

[00:28:51] This is pretty stressful.

[00:28:52] He doesn't like the stressful ones.

[00:28:53] Can you, when you found out that they gave us the information for us to make the announcement

[00:28:58] about who won the election, that was pretty shocking.

[00:29:00] It was a lot.

[00:29:00] It's a big get for us.

[00:29:02] Yeah.

[00:29:04] Justin's like, I was, I was stunned.

[00:29:07] Yeah.

[00:29:08] I think we all, well, cause it's not typically our lane, you know?

[00:29:11] So try to stay away.

[00:29:13] Fumbled it.

[00:29:13] And now we know why.

[00:29:14] That's right.

[00:29:14] Yeah.

[00:29:14] Now we know.

[00:29:15] It's not our, never forget.

[00:29:17] Yeah.

[00:29:17] They'll announce the winner of the election at the end of the Deck the Hallmark episode.

[00:29:21] Yes.

[00:29:22] On Wednesday morning.

[00:29:23] Tune in.

[00:29:24] Tune in.

[00:29:24] Tune in.

[00:29:25] Uh, let's get to the way.

[00:29:27] What is where we, uh, where we talk about what in this movie made us go.

[00:29:30] Wait, what?

[00:29:32] Brian?

[00:29:33] Yep.

[00:29:33] The Joe's, uh, architecture firm with a friend, they got to implement some change process because

[00:29:40] change request process, because this is ridiculous.

[00:29:42] You cannot show up at somebody's desk.

[00:29:44] Oh, the client called.

[00:29:45] They want this.

[00:29:46] It's like, you have a process of software.

[00:29:49] Does this, this, they've been doing this for years.

[00:29:50] You just can't.

[00:29:51] This paperwork.

[00:29:52] You got to do that.

[00:29:53] You can't just willy nilly have changes.

[00:29:55] Brian is like paperwork's lawyer.

[00:29:59] Keep paper in the game.

[00:30:01] Brian is here to advocate.

[00:30:02] On behalf of paperwork everywhere.

[00:30:03] Anything that needs to be documented.

[00:30:05] Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

[00:30:06] If you need to document it, I'm for it.

[00:30:07] Daryl says they can do something without a paper trail.

[00:30:10] Get a document.

[00:30:11] Daryl says not on my NF and watch.

[00:30:14] Wow.

[00:30:15] Sorry.

[00:30:15] Go ahead, Brian.

[00:30:16] People win every time.

[00:30:18] That wasn't, we know that wasn't an improv show.

[00:30:21] No.

[00:30:21] Just for the record.

[00:30:22] No.

[00:30:22] Can we just do this as a segment?

[00:30:24] Yeah.

[00:30:25] An improv Christmas carol.

[00:30:26] Come on.

[00:30:27] Guys, are we trying to make the worst thing in the world?

[00:30:30] Is that what we're trying to do?

[00:30:32] Listen, we have some good.

[00:30:35] We have a lot of fun here at Deck the Hallmark.

[00:30:37] We have a lot of good theater in Greenville.

[00:30:39] I do think in New York, you could go into any back room of a coffee shop and see some weird

[00:30:45] thing going on.

[00:30:46] Have you ever witnessed this, Justin, an improv Christmas carol?

[00:30:49] Have you ever gone into a back room of a coffee shop and witnessed some great improv?

[00:30:55] I've been the weird thing going on in the back room of a coffee shop.

[00:30:59] Is that appropriate to say?

[00:31:01] Yeah.

[00:31:01] You said it.

[00:31:02] No.

[00:31:03] Gosh.

[00:31:04] I've been married five months now, so I might be ending this prematurely.

[00:31:08] But my husband did improv, and that was one of the most difficult things for me to overcome.

[00:31:15] That's why we brought you on here today, actually.

[00:31:18] That was a big topic, huh?

[00:31:20] When we were locking this down.

[00:31:22] So, yeah.

[00:31:22] Well, when the counselor said, held out a hat and said, take a thing.

[00:31:27] I need an occupation.

[00:31:30] It was a mess.

[00:31:30] I do feel like one element of improv that they really got right in the film is that I

[00:31:36] didn't want to see that.

[00:31:37] Yeah.

[00:31:39] So cringy, yeah.

[00:31:41] Yes.

[00:31:41] That worked.

[00:31:42] But, I mean, yeah.

[00:31:44] I mean, the whole idea behind improv is yes and.

[00:31:46] And I feel like when you start with a Christmas carol improv, you are already stopping that

[00:31:53] immediately.

[00:31:54] Yeah.

[00:31:55] That's a full stop now.

[00:31:55] Because it's a story we know.

[00:31:58] It's a fully told story.

[00:31:58] But also, it's like.

[00:32:00] Do you think Christmas carol is underrepresented in these movies?

[00:32:04] You could have chosen any.

[00:32:05] I hear about Christmas carol a hundred times a year.

[00:32:09] Even if it was just a Christmas improv show.

[00:32:11] The fact that it was a play with an improv element was wild.

[00:32:16] But the idea of improv is to stay as far away as possible from things people can quote.

[00:32:21] Like, why would you do something that is so famous?

[00:32:26] That's stupid.

[00:32:27] Like, why would you do that?

[00:32:28] And improv off of that?

[00:32:30] Like, you're just.

[00:32:31] You're like.

[00:32:31] You know how we have like a 10% laugh rate with improv?

[00:32:35] What if we make it way harder?

[00:32:38] What if we drop.

[00:32:40] We took 10 of that 10.

[00:32:41] Yeah.

[00:32:42] What if we make it 1%?

[00:32:43] What if there's just no chance of laughter?

[00:32:45] Yeah.

[00:32:45] What if we do that?

[00:32:46] You're not here for laughs.

[00:32:47] Even Colin Mockery and Ryan Stiles.

[00:32:49] They couldn't pull it off.

[00:32:50] No, no, no.

[00:32:51] Wayne Brady wouldn't have a chance.

[00:32:52] I said what I said.

[00:32:53] Wayne Brady would bring in the piano player.

[00:32:56] That's right.

[00:32:56] Play it.

[00:32:57] Play it.

[00:32:57] I'll do a thing.

[00:32:58] Lauren Stiles?

[00:32:59] What was her name?

[00:33:00] No, it was not Lauren Stiles.

[00:33:00] Lauren.

[00:33:01] What is it?

[00:33:03] Lauren Hall.

[00:33:04] Laura Hall.

[00:33:05] Laura Hall?

[00:33:05] Laura Hall.

[00:33:06] God bless you, Laura Hall.

[00:33:07] Do you have anything else?

[00:33:09] Yeah.

[00:33:09] At the real estate office, they're just manually signing all the Christmas cards.

[00:33:13] And I just got a chuckle out of that thinking, Aaron coming around everybody's desk with all the Christmas cards.

[00:33:17] Hey, Dan, can you sign this?

[00:33:18] Yeah.

[00:33:19] You sign this.

[00:33:19] A stack of 400 cards.

[00:33:21] Oh, my gosh.

[00:33:22] Yeah, that's it for me.

[00:33:24] Justin, anyway, what's for you while you're watching this movie?

[00:33:28] I was so worried that both of mine were going to get taken and somehow.

[00:33:31] There aren't many in this movie.

[00:33:33] Yeah.

[00:33:34] The first one, and I don't know if this was just a throwaway line that everybody else missed, but when they went on their first date, Shane and Laura.

[00:33:41] Laura?

[00:33:41] Laura Hall.

[00:33:42] Yes.

[00:33:43] Yeah, Laura Hall.

[00:33:44] Yeah.

[00:33:45] And he goes, what drew you to architecture?

[00:33:48] And she just goes, the permanence.

[00:33:50] Okay.

[00:33:52] Like, what really draws you to architecture?

[00:33:55] The way that the bricks are just staying there.

[00:33:58] Yeah.

[00:33:58] Like, what?

[00:33:59] Things don't move.

[00:34:00] That's literally.

[00:34:01] I love when things don't move.

[00:34:03] He asked you.

[00:34:04] He asked you what drew you to architecture, not what, like, what are the basic tenets of it.

[00:34:10] Like, yeah, it just, like, hangs out there.

[00:34:13] So, literally, we had to pause the movie because I walked around like a big a-hole in our living room going, what do you love about architecture?

[00:34:20] The way the bricks stay.

[00:34:22] And, like, the bit was really funny for, like, two minutes.

[00:34:27] But, unfortunately, I did it for, like, 12.

[00:34:29] Yeah.

[00:34:29] As you should.

[00:34:30] Which is really insensitive to your husband who you made stop improv.

[00:34:34] Yeah.

[00:34:34] This is really insensitive.

[00:34:35] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:34:36] There's a reason I don't do the improv.

[00:34:38] I just make fun of it.

[00:34:40] The other one that really threw me was what the F happened to Santa Claus?

[00:34:46] Yeah.

[00:34:46] When he, like, locked himself away, like, holiday season can be difficult, which is why we love to throw ourselves into these films.

[00:34:54] Because it's removing ourselves from that world.

[00:34:57] But that man was not well.

[00:34:58] No.

[00:34:58] He was like, I can't do it anymore.

[00:35:01] And I'm like, he had a bomb strapped to his desk, if I remember correctly.

[00:35:05] And I was like, this is a bad situation.

[00:35:08] But, yeah, I just felt like that kind of added to the unnecessary gravity that this movie had sometimes.

[00:35:19] It's the most unearned scene maybe in the history of Hallmark movies.

[00:35:22] Have you seen this guy the rest of the movie?

[00:35:24] In his joyful cardigans jumping around all movie?

[00:35:27] Yeah.

[00:35:28] It was wild.

[00:35:29] And Caroline Ray's like, well, would you like a hug?

[00:35:32] Do you think that Santa Claus locked himself in a room?

[00:35:35] And for whatever reason that he's spiraling for and a hug's going to bring him back?

[00:35:41] Aunt Zelda?

[00:35:42] I don't think so.

[00:35:43] Sorry.

[00:35:44] Aunt Hilda?

[00:35:45] Yeah.

[00:35:45] Get around, please.

[00:35:46] I don't think so.

[00:35:47] Yeah.

[00:35:49] Original host of The Biggest Loser, Caroline Ray.

[00:35:52] Not that harlot, Ally Sweeney.

[00:35:54] In the best way.

[00:35:55] Not that harlot, Ally Sweeney.

[00:35:57] Yes.

[00:35:58] Which is a compliment.

[00:35:59] Yeah.

[00:35:59] A complimentary harlot.

[00:36:01] Yeah.

[00:36:01] Complimentary.

[00:36:02] Yeah.

[00:36:03] Both of those threw me.

[00:36:05] I was like, guys, what are we doing?

[00:36:06] Like, let's keep it in reality.

[00:36:08] Let's keep it permanent.

[00:36:10] Right.

[00:36:10] Like architecture.

[00:36:12] That's right.

[00:36:15] Towards the end of the movie when they're at the ball and someone is talking to Lauren.

[00:36:23] I think it was her mom or one of the moms, and they say, oh, yeah, he's selling to theater.

[00:36:31] And she's like, he's selling to theater.

[00:36:33] And he's walking up, and he's like, hey, what's wrong?

[00:36:36] And he couldn't have been a foot away from them as they're having this conversation, but somehow he doesn't hear it.

[00:36:44] And he's just like, what?

[00:36:46] Like, how did he not hear them talking about him in the theater?

[00:36:51] He's just totally just like, oh, you're talking about me?

[00:36:56] Oh, no.

[00:36:57] What are you guys talking about?

[00:36:58] What did you guys say?

[00:36:59] He most definitely heard them talking about him.

[00:37:03] I don't believe it for a second.

[00:37:04] Dano?

[00:37:05] Yeah.

[00:37:05] Justin did mention the Santa scene where this guy's having an existential crisis.

[00:37:10] And there's a bushel barrel of weight what's in that scene alone.

[00:37:13] Would you hide it under?

[00:37:15] No.

[00:37:16] Okay.

[00:37:17] Let it shine, man.

[00:37:18] Are you kidding me right now?

[00:37:19] The audacity you even asked that question.

[00:37:22] The biggest weight what did that scene for me is this movie makes a pretty legitimate case why Santa shouldn't exist in a Hallmark Christmas movie.

[00:37:30] Like, they make a – why they did that, I don't know.

[00:37:33] But they make a legitimate case that Santa leaves kids with expectations that aren't fulfilled and ruins Christmas for them.

[00:37:42] And they do it with a completely straight face.

[00:37:45] And the whole time I was watching the scene, I was just like, where's the humor?

[00:37:49] Like, when are we going to get to the funny ha-ha just kidding of it all?

[00:37:53] And it never shows up.

[00:37:55] They just stick with that.

[00:37:57] They're just like, yeah, Santa could really be problematic, which is a weird thing to say.

[00:38:02] Do you think they were trying to highlight the ever-shrinking middle class in America?

[00:38:06] I think they should have been.

[00:38:08] You know what I mean?

[00:38:10] They leaned into the intensity and they were like, what if we offered some real commentary here?

[00:38:15] That's right.

[00:38:15] I'm really trying to give this film as much credit as I can.

[00:38:19] I think that on every page of this script was think of the shrinking middle class in America.

[00:38:24] I think that's what they were really trying to do here.

[00:38:29] Yeah.

[00:38:29] Beth Broderick is coy about how long she was accountant for literally no reason.

[00:38:34] Like, she's retired and they're like, you were the head of accounting here for how many years?

[00:38:38] And she goes, I'd prefer not to say.

[00:38:40] Why not?

[00:38:42] Why not?

[00:38:42] It doesn't –

[00:38:43] Private lady.

[00:38:43] That has nothing to do with how old you are.

[00:38:45] You're retired.

[00:38:46] Like, make up a number.

[00:38:48] Like, it doesn't –

[00:38:49] 400 years.

[00:38:50] 400 years.

[00:38:51] Yeah, yeah.

[00:38:52] If it was that, then you wouldn't – because then you would be immortal.

[00:38:56] And then you would not want to let anybody know.

[00:38:58] It's a follow-up question.

[00:38:59] How?

[00:38:59] That's right.

[00:39:00] That's right.

[00:39:01] Maybe then you shouldn't.

[00:39:02] Also in this movie, Beth Broderick, I thought she might be immortal or hundreds of years old.

[00:39:07] Because she says, but what do you do when life throws you a curveballs?

[00:39:11] Plural.

[00:39:12] And I couldn't believe she said it, but she said, what happens when life throws you a curveballs?

[00:39:19] Plural.

[00:39:20] And I don't – there was some –

[00:39:21] Can I ask you this, though?

[00:39:22] Yeah.

[00:39:23] Have you considered it?

[00:39:23] I've not.

[00:39:24] About what happens if life does throw you curveballs?

[00:39:27] I don't know.

[00:39:27] I don't know what to even do there.

[00:39:29] Exactly.

[00:39:30] You swing away.

[00:39:31] Yeah.

[00:39:31] The biggest one for me, though, in this movie is Caroline Ray's talking about how she, you know,

[00:39:36] was in search of something, and then this woman who she doesn't like, who works for the Chamber of Commerce,

[00:39:41] gave her this job, and it's her job, and she needs a job.

[00:39:45] And somewhere in that speech, I realized that this small town has a Christmas committee that is a full-time job for a chairman.

[00:39:54] And I couldn't get past it the rest of the way.

[00:39:58] This woman gets a full-time salary to be the head of the Christmas committee of the city's Chamber of Commerce.

[00:40:06] I think it's all events.

[00:40:08] It's all events?

[00:40:09] I think it's because they talked about Valentine's Day, which I assume she would be doing.

[00:40:13] So she, this woman, once again, we can look at Greenville's Chamber of Commerce, which is a bigger city than this one, I believe.

[00:40:19] This woman gets, has a full-time salary, and her job is the head of the committee for holiday planning?

[00:40:26] I think so.

[00:40:27] Man.

[00:40:27] Yeah.

[00:40:27] What a life.

[00:40:28] Yep.

[00:40:29] What a time to be alive.

[00:40:30] Love it for her.

[00:40:33] Yolanda can't do it all.

[00:40:34] That's true.

[00:40:35] That's true.

[00:40:35] Do you want Yolanda?

[00:40:36] Yolanda couldn't throw this party.

[00:40:38] She's not.

[00:40:39] They're not her best there.

[00:40:40] No, no, no, no.

[00:40:40] You need a cath.

[00:40:43] Yes.

[00:40:43] 100%.

[00:40:44] Got a cath.

[00:40:44] That's what makes Yolanda great at her job.

[00:40:46] She knows.

[00:40:47] She knows her weaknesses.

[00:40:48] That's right.

[00:40:48] That's right.

[00:40:49] I respected Yolanda from the sidelines as well, like clocking them, fighting in the middle of the party and coming over and being like, this is neither the place nor the time, ladies.

[00:41:01] Yeah.

[00:41:01] Like, let's shut this down.

[00:41:03] I love how Yolanda is kind of the villain throughout the movie.

[00:41:06] And then she's the voice of reason at the party.

[00:41:09] She's like, listen, I know you all hate me, but here's some wisdom.

[00:41:14] It's time for what the hallmark is where we wonder what could have been.

[00:41:17] Maybe have it get some clarity.

[00:41:18] Any questions that we still have?

[00:41:19] What are we still wondering about?

[00:41:21] We want some answers to Brian.

[00:41:23] It's funny.

[00:41:24] On Yolanda, one of my questions was immediately upon meeting Barb, Barb Aura, she hugged her.

[00:41:30] And I just didn't feel like Yolanda was a hugger.

[00:41:33] Oh, wow.

[00:41:34] As a first, like, I just met you.

[00:41:36] I'm going to hug you.

[00:41:36] And I don't think she hugged anybody else.

[00:41:38] Maybe she didn't meet anybody else the whole movie.

[00:41:40] But is Yolanda a hugger?

[00:41:42] I just did not get that vibe from her.

[00:41:44] Didn't get a hugger vibe.

[00:41:45] Not at all.

[00:41:45] Interesting.

[00:41:45] Not at all.

[00:41:46] Yeah.

[00:41:47] Justin, you've got to follow that.

[00:41:49] Can you top that?

[00:41:50] Can you top that?

[00:41:52] Did I take yours?

[00:41:53] Well, I'm sorry.

[00:41:55] No, no, no, no, no.

[00:41:56] I don't know how appropriate this conversation is to have, but you know I'm going to have it anyway.

[00:42:01] Yeah.

[00:42:02] I looked up John McLaren, who played Shane.

[00:42:05] Yeah.

[00:42:06] And he is a storied actor in this genre.

[00:42:10] But I was a little surprised because I texted you this last night, Dan.

[00:42:15] Oh, my gosh.

[00:42:15] I was laughing so hard.

[00:42:18] I really thought about 20 minutes into the movie, the big twist was going to be that he's like,

[00:42:23] Bop.

[00:42:24] And for those who can't see, I just kind of dropped my hand a little bit into this, like,

[00:42:30] because I texted Dan.

[00:42:31] I sent him.

[00:42:32] That's great.

[00:42:33] I sent a photo of, like, a Ben twist, and I was like, is our lead supposed to be, you know,

[00:42:39] and I was really stunned because then the gay brother shows up, and I'm like, all right,

[00:42:44] so, like, she's woke.

[00:42:49] She's progressive, if you will.

[00:42:51] So, like, there's no reason for him to be in the closet.

[00:42:55] And then I had to make peace at about two-thirds of the way through the movie when I saw that

[00:42:58] it was ending, like, this man's not going to be gay.

[00:43:01] But I thought he was a member of the tribe.

[00:43:04] So, I was a little confused, and I would be interested in another life of kind of what

[00:43:11] that looks like.

[00:43:12] Because, I mean, the man owns a theater company.

[00:43:13] I'm not saying you can't be straight and dappling the arts.

[00:43:16] George Clooney's made a whole life out of it, and he's, you know, but I don't know.

[00:43:21] I feel like I should stop talking now anyway.

[00:43:23] Hey, you're the only one of us that could really have had this conversation.

[00:43:26] I was going to say that since you took mine, I'll, uh, I did probably show, I showed both

[00:43:33] of these guys that text because I had to, like, I was watching a different movie because

[00:43:38] we recorded more than one today, if you can believe it.

[00:43:40] And I had to pause the movie.

[00:43:42] I was laughing so hard.

[00:43:43] I was like, I don't know about this yet.

[00:43:44] I've not watched it, but Justin has some thoughts, and it was fantastic.

[00:43:50] Yeah, I was stunned.

[00:43:52] So, I'll just, I'll ask you this.

[00:43:53] Who do you think is going to win Survivor this season?

[00:43:56] Oh, God.

[00:43:57] Uh, well, originally, I'm going into it because he was the only one that was shown.

[00:44:02] I thought it was going to be John Lovett.

[00:44:03] I think we all are.

[00:44:04] Yeah.

[00:44:04] I'm a week behind.

[00:44:05] He's first, he's first out.

[00:44:07] You know who I want to pull it out?

[00:44:10] Uh, Sue.

[00:44:11] You want Sue to win?

[00:44:13] He's still left, huh?

[00:44:14] Sue's still hanging in there.

[00:44:15] Give me Saul.

[00:44:16] Give me Saul for the win.

[00:44:17] I like Saul.

[00:44:17] Give me Saul for the win.

[00:44:18] I like Saul.

[00:44:18] Oh, yeah.

[00:44:19] He's the best.

[00:44:20] Solid.

[00:44:20] So solid.

[00:44:21] And I know you just said you're a week behind, but this episode is heavy on Saul, and we're all

[00:44:26] better for it.

[00:44:26] Okay.

[00:44:27] He's not a flexible mind.

[00:44:28] You know what I'm saying?

[00:44:30] I didn't.

[00:44:31] He's a solid nine.

[00:44:32] He's a solid nine.

[00:44:33] Solid nine.

[00:44:35] I also think, keep an eye on Miss Genevieve.

[00:44:37] She's out there doing it.

[00:44:39] Yeah.

[00:44:39] She's up to no good.

[00:44:40] I know that much.

[00:44:41] Dan?

[00:44:41] Starting to make trouble in the neighborhood.

[00:44:42] Yeah.

[00:44:43] I, there's a scene in this movie where the brother's like, hey, they upped the offer for the theater,

[00:44:49] and they're like, well, maybe I should take it.

[00:44:51] They never say a specific number.

[00:44:53] Of course not.

[00:44:53] Of course not.

[00:44:53] So frustrating.

[00:44:54] And then the brother's like, basically, you could buy a house, or you could travel the world

[00:45:00] twice.

[00:45:00] Twice over.

[00:45:01] Yeah.

[00:45:02] And I don't, like.

[00:45:03] How much do you think, though?

[00:45:05] 500?

[00:45:05] This is why it's 100.

[00:45:06] Is I looked up how much it would cost to.

[00:45:09] It sent Dan down a trail.

[00:45:11] I couldn't, because I'm like, these are two things that aren't related.

[00:45:15] No.

[00:45:15] Like, buy a house.

[00:45:17] That could be an indeterminate amount of money.

[00:45:21] Travel the world.

[00:45:22] What does that even mean?

[00:45:23] Like, travel the world twice.

[00:45:25] Like, I looked up a bunch of numbers, but the short version is, like, reasonably for $5,000

[00:45:32] a month, which I found really hard to believe.

[00:45:34] I thought it would be way more than that.

[00:45:36] I don't think I could do it for $5,000 a month.

[00:45:39] Like, just, like, going all these places and staying.

[00:45:42] Comfortably?

[00:45:43] Like, I'm not going to stay in a hostel.

[00:45:44] You know what I mean?

[00:45:45] Like.

[00:45:45] No.

[00:45:45] I just.

[00:45:46] It's your needs?

[00:45:47] It's a weird thing that this was, these were the, that we've got money.

[00:45:53] We've got money.

[00:45:54] What are the things you could do with that money?

[00:45:56] Well, I've got two options for you.

[00:45:58] You could buy a house.

[00:45:59] Buy a cattle farm.

[00:45:59] Or you could travel the world not once, but twice.

[00:46:03] You could travel there once and put a down payment on a house.

[00:46:06] No.

[00:46:06] He said buy a house.

[00:46:07] Travel it twice or buy a house.

[00:46:09] The number that I had in mind was $300,000.

[00:46:11] That was the number that came to mind starting.

[00:46:13] So, $150,000 for one trip around the world.

[00:46:16] That's what I got out of that.

[00:46:18] Yeah.

[00:46:19] The right way.

[00:46:19] If you're doing it right.

[00:46:20] If you're doing it the right way.

[00:46:21] Yeah.

[00:46:21] 12 and some change.

[00:46:23] 12K and some change a month.

[00:46:24] Yeah.

[00:46:24] You could do that, right?

[00:46:26] But why are these the two options?

[00:46:28] Why are these the two options?

[00:46:29] That's all you can do.

[00:46:30] How about just say, you're going to make $300,000?

[00:46:33] Yeah.

[00:46:34] Why do this thing where it's like, well, I mean, you could buy a house or travel the world

[00:46:37] twice.

[00:46:38] I think we all know how much money that is, right?

[00:46:40] We all know.

[00:46:41] We don't have to say it.

[00:46:42] We all know how much money that is.

[00:46:44] How much would we have to pay you to travel around the world for a year?

[00:46:48] Like $12, $13.

[00:46:50] Okay.

[00:46:50] Total.

[00:46:51] Yeah.

[00:46:52] Everything else is paid for.

[00:46:53] Yeah.

[00:46:54] Well, and as somebody who did see one of their plays, I think $12 or $13 is a fair offer.

[00:47:01] Hey, Justin, since we've got you, you grew up in East Tennessee.

[00:47:03] I grew up in Hopkins, South Carolina.

[00:47:05] We grew up on the lower, lower middle class to low class side of things.

[00:47:11] Yeah.

[00:47:11] When did you know, based upon the things that were treats growing up, when did you know

[00:47:16] that your family just didn't have as much money?

[00:47:18] Because I know when it was for me, it was a drink out of the drink machine.

[00:47:22] We never got a drink out of the drink machine.

[00:47:24] And when other people, kids would do that every day, I was like, oh my gosh, this is wild.

[00:47:30] This is a very good deal for me.

[00:47:31] Like the vending machine?

[00:47:32] The vending machine.

[00:47:33] Yeah.

[00:47:33] That was what it was for me.

[00:47:34] 75 cents.

[00:47:35] Yeah.

[00:47:35] For a can.

[00:47:36] In elementary school, there were three things that would make you really cool.

[00:47:40] And it was if you had braces, if you had a cast, or if you moved.

[00:47:44] Yeah.

[00:47:45] You had a good weekend if you came in with a cast.

[00:47:48] You're like, oh my God.

[00:47:49] Everybody gets his eye and stuff.

[00:47:50] And your family couldn't afford casts.

[00:47:52] You broke your arm and just came in with it dangling.

[00:47:54] You were like this.

[00:47:57] That's why my arm is just L-shaped at any given time.

[00:48:02] No, we moved.

[00:48:05] And I remember going to school and I was like, oh, I'm lit.

[00:48:08] Let's go tell everybody that I'm moving.

[00:48:10] And I was like, guys, we're moving.

[00:48:13] And they were like, where are you moving to?

[00:48:14] And I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no.

[00:48:15] They're going to take the single wide and roll it out.

[00:48:20] And then they're going to bring in two parts of the double wide and set it down.

[00:48:25] And they were like, you're not moving.

[00:48:27] You're poor.

[00:48:28] And I was like, you got me.

[00:48:33] So I stayed at the same address my entire childhood.

[00:48:37] But we did move.

[00:48:39] So I think that was the moment where I was like, uh-oh.

[00:48:42] I don't think.

[00:48:44] I like to tell people we moved into a two-story house.

[00:48:48] They just put the story side by side.

[00:48:52] Two-story side.

[00:48:53] I think that was fun.

[00:48:54] Two unilateral stories.

[00:48:56] Two unilateral stories.

[00:48:57] Before we get too far away from the movie, staying in the conversation of finance, I'm a little surprised and worried that nobody here brought up the box of receipts as a means of keeping your finances.

[00:49:14] Finances.

[00:49:14] Because it makes me finances.

[00:49:16] That's how you know that you moved up in the world.

[00:49:18] That's right.

[00:49:18] You stop saying finance.

[00:49:19] Finance.

[00:49:19] And you say finance.

[00:49:20] Just to be a jerk.

[00:49:21] I bet you don't even say Italian food anymore, do you?

[00:49:25] You've changed.

[00:49:26] I only – I want an – when I get an Italian hoagie, that's when I call it up.

[00:49:32] The fact that you guys didn't call that out makes me a little nervous about y'all's business.

[00:49:36] Yeah.

[00:49:37] But was that a red flag to anybody else?

[00:49:40] We just have so many shoeboxes around here.

[00:49:42] We're not really worried about it.

[00:49:43] And it's also – we did bring it up earlier and say they were chronological.

[00:49:46] They were.

[00:49:46] So there's that.

[00:49:47] Credit for that.

[00:49:48] So credit to that.

[00:49:49] But I mean, you know, for a movie – for a homeboy movie.

[00:49:53] Producer Aaron, can we get you up there to open the mailbox and see if receipts fall out of that North Pole Express mail in the front?

[00:50:00] Because I'm just concerned at this point.

[00:50:02] There is a reason why it's no longer on the pole.

[00:50:04] It got so heavy.

[00:50:05] It just kind of fell off.

[00:50:06] So we set it there.

[00:50:07] We figured this would be better for the future.

[00:50:11] Ridiculous.

[00:50:12] We did it.

[00:50:13] Yeah, we sure did.

[00:50:13] We did it.

[00:50:14] Justin, tell the people whatever you want to tell them right now.

[00:50:17] Here's your time.

[00:50:19] If you guys want to find me, just look in your hearts.

[00:50:22] Yeah.

[00:50:22] That's good.

[00:50:23] That's good stuff.

[00:50:24] If you want to find me on social media, it's JustinKirkland4.

[00:50:29] And if you're reading something and you're like, wow, I think that's well written, scroll up to the top.

[00:50:34] My name might be part on it.

[00:50:35] It might not be.

[00:50:36] Might be part on it.

[00:50:37] Might be part on it.

[00:50:38] It might be part on it.

[00:50:40] So who knows?

[00:50:40] No, I'm grateful to be back here with you jokesters.

[00:50:46] So thanks for having me.

[00:50:47] And then whenever Yellowstone, the final season.

[00:50:50] Of course.

[00:50:51] We never did season four, which is weird.

[00:50:54] You can listen to our show and listen to the first half of five and listen to seasons one, two, and three, but not four.

[00:51:02] So keep that in mind.

[00:51:03] Yes, that was intentional.

[00:51:04] Of course.

[00:51:04] No, no, no.

[00:51:05] We talked through that.

[00:51:06] That was strategy.

[00:51:06] Yeah.

[00:51:07] Strategy is what it was.

[00:51:08] Honestly, I'm down.

[00:51:10] I'm down for it.

[00:51:12] I want recognition and perhaps consistency was the missing component here.

[00:51:17] That's on me.

[00:51:18] But I do want recognition that we called this.

[00:51:21] We did.

[00:51:21] We sure did.

[00:51:22] Yeah.

[00:51:23] Costner rolled out of the Yellowstone lane.

[00:51:26] We said John Dutton must die.

[00:51:28] That's right.

[00:51:29] They saw it.

[00:51:29] To be fair.

[00:51:30] They saw it.

[00:51:30] They talked about it in the writer's room.

[00:51:32] They said, have you seen this?

[00:51:33] You've seen these guys?

[00:51:34] They saw the out.

[00:51:34] Justin is also being more than kind.

[00:51:37] Justin came up with that title.

[00:51:39] It was not me.

[00:51:41] It's a great title.

[00:51:42] Justin came up with that title and it's fantastic.

[00:51:44] And also, it was right.

[00:51:45] And I, listen, he had to die.

[00:51:48] And now we know he's dead.

[00:51:49] We pretty much know he's dead.

[00:51:51] You know.

[00:51:52] Yeah.

[00:51:52] I shot him.

[00:51:53] Wow.

[00:51:54] Wow.

[00:51:54] What about that?

[00:51:56] We'll cut that.

[00:51:58] We'll be back.

[00:51:58] There's no sirens again.

[00:51:59] We'll be back tomorrow with another one.

[00:52:01] Justin, we'll see you next year.

[00:52:03] Until then, we're the first to switch you up.

[00:52:05] Merry Christmas.
