[00:00:00] Hi, I'm Bran and I love spooky Christmas movies.

[00:00:07] I'm Dan and I despise spooky Christmas movies.

[00:00:10] I'm Alonso and Ich liebe spooky Christmas movies.

[00:00:14] And this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast.

[00:00:17] Deck The Hallmark gets this podcast.

[00:00:20] And friends host this podcast.

[00:00:27] We hope you like this jolly podcast.

[00:00:35] Alonso, we've done it.

[00:00:36] Oh, another year in the book.

[00:00:39] Do you stay out of it?

[00:00:40] Why am I staying out of this?

[00:00:41] Alonso, we've done it.

[00:00:43] We've made it.

[00:00:44] It's finally here, the week of Christmas.

[00:00:46] But while I've also done it, I've done it too.

[00:00:49] Yeah, but you don't appreciate it like Alonso and I do.

[00:00:52] Alonso, we've done it.

[00:00:54] What you're saying is I'm not in the cool Christmas club?

[00:00:57] You're not in the cool Christmas club.

[00:00:58] I know that hurts you to your core.

[00:01:00] Well, it goes against everything you believe in about Christmas clubs and Christmas, but that's fine.

[00:01:04] I'd love for you to be in it.

[00:01:05] Leave me out.

[00:01:06] No, I'm here.

[00:01:07] I'm trying.

[00:01:07] I said I did it too.

[00:01:09] You've made it a point to exclude yourself from St. Daniel.

[00:01:12] Oh, how dare you?

[00:01:12] How dare you?

[00:01:13] You can't come running around now trying to be all in.

[00:01:15] Do you think Christmas movies starting this weekend's too early?

[00:01:19] Yeah.

[00:01:20] But am I still going to?

[00:01:22] What are we to do with that, Alonso?

[00:01:23] We did it, Alonso!

[00:01:25] We made it!

[00:01:26] Yeah!

[00:01:27] I'm being excluded by brain and grain Alonso Duraldi.

[00:01:30] I just want that on the record.

[00:01:31] I'm here for it.

[00:01:33] I'm here.

[00:01:34] Let's do this thing.

[00:01:34] You had ample opportunity, and you rejected it.

[00:01:37] You're not here according to every turn.

[00:01:38] According to Philo.

[00:01:39] Don't come crying now.

[00:01:40] According to Philo.tv.htt.

[00:01:42] You're not here.

[00:01:43] It's just me.

[00:01:43] It's just me and Alonso.

[00:01:44] Alonso said, Eek, leave us spooky Christmas movies.

[00:01:47] And Eek is a dear friend of yours.

[00:01:49] Yes.

[00:01:49] Do you, any words for Eek from you?

[00:01:51] Well, Eek is shy.

[00:01:53] Eek is shy and doesn't want to get into it today, but appreciates the shout out nonetheless.

[00:01:58] For sure.

[00:01:58] Yeah.

[00:02:00] Alonso, you're coming into town this weekend, which is really exciting.

[00:02:03] It's how we're going to kick off the holiday season with our marathon on Friday.

[00:02:06] How are you preparing?

[00:02:08] I know that this is going to be your fourth, I believe?

[00:02:13] Yes.

[00:02:14] Your fourth marathon.

[00:02:15] Unbelievable.

[00:02:17] Unbelievable.

[00:02:17] How is preparation for this one differing?

[00:02:20] Your preparation.

[00:02:21] How does your preparation for this one differ from four years prior?

[00:02:26] Well, I mean, this year we have a kitchen.

[00:02:29] Yeah.

[00:02:29] It's big.

[00:02:30] So, you know.

[00:02:30] What do you got planned for that kitchen?

[00:02:32] What can you tease?

[00:02:34] There's going to be some baking.

[00:02:36] Maybe even baking something that's featured in our book, I'll Be Home for Christmas Movies.

[00:02:42] Maybe even Save the Town Brownies.

[00:02:44] Maybe even.

[00:02:45] Gosh, if you don't tease me with a good time.

[00:02:47] Are you going to make them special brownies?

[00:02:52] I don't know what the current laws are for South Carolina.

[00:02:56] Maybe even it's not illegal to possess, but illegal to buy and distribute.

[00:03:01] If you enter the state with it, there's nothing they can do.

[00:03:08] I don't know.

[00:03:08] Maybe I need to shop for very expensive butter.

[00:03:11] I don't know.

[00:03:12] Oh, my gosh.

[00:03:13] Oh, my gosh.

[00:03:15] DeckTheHomeArt.com slash marathon this Friday, 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time until question

[00:03:20] Mike.

[00:03:22] It's going to be a lot of fun.

[00:03:23] Hey, with only one movie on Saturday, reasonably speaking under 30 hours, which is very exciting.

[00:03:28] Wow.

[00:03:28] Yeah.

[00:03:29] That's a quick sprint.

[00:03:30] You get a four and a half block where you can be off camera and in your bed.

[00:03:34] It's pretty much easy at this point, you know?

[00:03:37] Some are saying we've made it too easy.

[00:03:39] Some are saying.

[00:03:39] Many are saying.

[00:03:40] Many are saying we've made it too easy and people are leaving early.

[00:03:44] Well, the first two I did were not overnighters.

[00:03:47] Oh, you did the 6 a.m. boys, right?

[00:03:49] Yeah.

[00:03:50] So this will be...

[00:03:52] Last year was...

[00:03:54] The first overnight one.

[00:03:55] Last year was the first lock-in, but I think this one, I think the house is big and luxurious.

[00:04:01] It's going to be great.

[00:04:01] Having done two overnight ones and three 6 a.m. ones, I feel like the overnight ones, there's

[00:04:08] something special about just the marathon of it all, just the actual getting through

[00:04:13] it.

[00:04:13] The 6 a.m. ones just felt like a long day, like you just had a long work day.

[00:04:17] Right, right.

[00:04:18] Yeah.

[00:04:19] And I think there's something about those conversations that happen at 3 a.m., like

[00:04:23] who is even...

[00:04:24] Who's up in our place?

[00:04:25] Who's up online watching?

[00:04:27] You know?

[00:04:28] Oh, what a time to be a lot.

[00:04:29] And a lot of people think that we've added more people to the Deck the Homework family

[00:04:33] because we want to offer more voices, differing opinions.

[00:04:37] It has nothing to do with that.

[00:04:38] This is purely strategic on our part.

[00:04:41] It's just so we can sleep some during the marathon.

[00:04:42] So that we could sleep a little bit during the overnight marathons.

[00:04:45] Shifts.

[00:04:45] That first one was tough.

[00:04:47] That first one was tough.

[00:04:48] It was just me, you panda.

[00:04:50] Nowhere to hide.

[00:04:51] That was 2019.

[00:04:52] I was 36 years old.

[00:04:55] I don't think at 41 I could do it.

[00:04:57] I honestly...

[00:04:57] I went home and was just...

[00:05:00] It was like I'd been hit by a bus.

[00:05:02] That was brutal.

[00:05:03] That was really tough...

[00:05:05] And you guys were unplugging the mics with your roller chairs.

[00:05:08] It was a whole thing.

[00:05:09] It was a whole experience, I think.

[00:05:11] That was wild.

[00:05:12] 2020, I remember Jingle Bell...

[00:05:14] The first two movies were Jingle Bell Bride Christmas on Honeysucker Lane because you

[00:05:17] joined us.

[00:05:18] And that Christmas on Honeysucker Lane one, I just remember thinking, I'm so, so tired.

[00:05:22] But you joined us via California, so you were more with it than we were.

[00:05:26] No, no, no.

[00:05:26] I was in North Carolina.

[00:05:27] Oh, no.

[00:05:27] I was in Virginia.

[00:05:28] That's right.

[00:05:28] You were in Virginia.

[00:05:29] That's right.

[00:05:30] That's right.

[00:05:30] Yeah, you just stayed up to do it.

[00:05:31] That's right.

[00:05:32] I remember the...

[00:05:34] We did some trivia, Christmas trivia with you at one point.

[00:05:38] That was fun.

[00:05:38] It was a lot of fun.

[00:05:39] We learned a lot.

[00:05:40] Hey, I'll be bringing it this weekend.

[00:05:43] I just got a whole new book of Christmas movie trivia that is coming out this month from

[00:05:49] our friends at Hachette.

[00:05:50] And I think it's going to be...

[00:05:52] It's going to give us some fun games to play.

[00:05:54] Did you get a preview of this book?

[00:05:57] They sent me an advance copy.

[00:05:58] Actually, Dave, you want to hand it to me?

[00:06:00] The Christmas trees.

[00:06:02] Dave said no.

[00:06:03] I love it.

[00:06:04] I think Dave's right here.

[00:06:08] The Christmas movie ultimate trivia book.

[00:06:11] Wow.

[00:06:12] I mean, come on.

[00:06:12] It's not already out.

[00:06:13] It's out real soon.

[00:06:14] And from Epic Inc.

[00:06:16] Epic.

[00:06:17] From Neil E. Fisher.

[00:06:19] So I think we'll definitely be...

[00:06:21] Shout out.

[00:06:22] Maybe we'll have a card game to play, Brian.

[00:06:23] Maybe we'll have a card game to play more than that soon.

[00:06:25] Shh.

[00:06:26] Shall we talk...

[00:06:27] And I think I need a rematch of Home Right Channel trivia.

[00:06:31] Home Right Channel Monopoly since I was trouncing you guys when the thing ended.

[00:06:36] I was about to round the corner to where everybody else...

[00:06:37] There's really no way to prove...

[00:06:39] There's no way for you to prove that.

[00:06:41] What you're saying now is anyone with less money than you in real life should quit.

[00:06:44] That's what you're saying right now, Alonzo.

[00:06:46] I'm just saying that's what the rules of the game say.

[00:06:48] Like, I didn't invent that.

[00:06:49] I still think one of my favorite things ever is socialist Alonzo Duralde being cutthroat

[00:06:53] at Monopoly.

[00:06:54] It's like...

[00:06:55] Well, that and the idea that Hallmark Channel has a Monopoly tie-in.

[00:06:58] So you win by being the villain in a Hallmark movie and buying up the bookstore and the coffee

[00:07:04] shop, you know?

[00:07:05] Talk about saying the quiet stuff out loud.

[00:07:06] Hallmark releasing a Monopoly board.

[00:07:09] That is...

[00:07:11] Oh, man.

[00:07:12] Man.

[00:07:12] Think it through, you guys.

[00:07:13] And yet, where is my Hallmark mystery clue?

[00:07:16] Like, that just seems to me they're leaving money on the table.

[00:07:19] Yeah.

[00:07:20] They sure are.

[00:07:20] They sure are.

[00:07:21] Speaking of leaving money on the table, if you haven't already gotten Philo, you are

[00:07:26] leaving money on the table.

[00:07:27] This is the time.

[00:07:28] Bang for buck.

[00:07:29] This is the time to do it.

[00:07:30] Four days away, you're going to want that DVR unlimited space.

[00:07:34] Because, listen...

[00:07:34] I mean, come on.

[00:07:35] Oh, I've...

[00:07:35] We've been in your shoes.

[00:07:36] We're in your shoes.

[00:07:37] We got to watch all these movies and it's hard.

[00:07:39] It's hard to do it all in real time.

[00:07:41] The DVR comes in clutch.

[00:07:43] And once they're saved to the DVR, it'll stay there.

[00:07:46] You don't have to get rid of it to get other stuff on there.

[00:07:49] It's unlimited.

[00:07:50] And you get the one-button ad skip.

[00:07:51] All holiday season long.

[00:07:52] So...

[00:07:53] Yeah.

[00:07:53] I mean, look, both Hallmark channels are about to...

[00:07:55] You know...

[00:07:55] Okay, not counting family.

[00:07:57] But, you know, main Hallmark and mystery are about to go 24-7.

[00:08:00] Which means if there's, like, some gems from previous years that you want to hang on to...

[00:08:04] Christmas card.

[00:08:04] You want a Christmas card in that permanent collection.

[00:08:07] Now's the time to DVR it.

[00:08:08] That's right.

[00:08:09] Let's talk Krampus, shall we?

[00:08:12] A movie...

[00:08:12] We've...

[00:08:13] I feel like...

[00:08:14] We talk about Krampus all the time.

[00:08:16] I feel like it's come up a lot.

[00:08:18] So I'm happy we're finally here.

[00:08:20] It originally premiered in the theater with Dan, you and I, and Panda in attendance.

[00:08:26] Yes, the three of us, years before Deck the Hallmark.

[00:08:29] That's right.

[00:08:29] Going to old Hollywood 20.

[00:08:30] Some might say there's no Deck the Hallmark without Krampus.

[00:08:32] I don't think anyone would say that.

[00:08:33] Well, there's a road there, though.

[00:08:36] It went a little something like this.

[00:08:39] The movie kicks off with a Christmas shopping montage.

[00:08:44] Have you seen a Christmas shopping montage before?

[00:08:48] Yeah, but not like this.

[00:08:49] Maybe you've heard of it.

[00:08:50] It's nuts out there.

[00:08:52] There are shoppers going crazy.

[00:08:54] They're trampling over each other.

[00:08:56] They're grabbing the best deals, TVs, etc.

[00:08:59] And in the midst of all the chaos, we meet Tom.

[00:09:03] We meet Sarah.

[00:09:04] They are rushing to break up a brawl that has been unleashed by their son, Max.

[00:09:11] And another kid who dared, who dared say there's no Santa.

[00:09:17] Yeah.

[00:09:17] Who would do that in this movie?

[00:09:19] Monster.

[00:09:20] Monster.

[00:09:21] Back home, things are no less chaotic.

[00:09:24] Sarah is preparing for her nightmare to become true.

[00:09:28] Her family is arriving.

[00:09:30] Her sister, Linda.

[00:09:32] Her, you know, he likes guns.

[00:09:35] His name's Howard.

[00:09:37] And they're kids that are just always loud, always complaining.

[00:09:41] And then the addition, without any notice, of Aunt Dorothy.

[00:09:47] It's a lot for her.

[00:09:49] And she's very, like, type A, very clean.

[00:09:52] And this family is the complete opposite of her.

[00:09:55] The family dinner does go off the rails as Max's cousins begin to tease him about his letter to Santa,

[00:10:04] which leads to a full-on family meltdown, a large, large argument,

[00:10:11] and Max crying as he tears up his wish list, which gets blown out the window.

[00:10:19] You don't want that.

[00:10:21] You don't want that.

[00:10:22] No.

[00:10:23] That causes a blizzard to come.

[00:10:26] Everyone knows if you rip up a letter and it goes out the window, the blizzard's coming.

[00:10:31] Knocks out power.

[00:10:32] A little bit of PTSD for us in that regard.

[00:10:36] No.

[00:10:36] A little too soon.

[00:10:37] Yeah.

[00:10:39] And everybody is now trapped inside the house.

[00:10:43] And weird things begin to happen.

[00:10:45] There's, you know, creepy snowmen kind of appearing outside.

[00:10:48] There's a mysterious sack of presents.

[00:10:50] And Max's sister decides, now is the time for me to go check.

[00:10:54] Me to go check on my guy there.

[00:10:56] And so she goes outside, out in the blizzard, and she is attacked by a demon.

[00:11:02] As the family begins to be worried about Beth, they go outside.

[00:11:08] They do a little search and rescue action.

[00:11:11] And they are then attacked by some mysterious creatures.

[00:11:15] And they are barely able to make it back into the house in one piece.

[00:11:18] They are now aware that something is afoot.

[00:11:22] There is something crazy going on.

[00:11:24] A hoof even.

[00:11:26] And things go from weird to worse.

[00:11:28] There's demonic gingerbread men.

[00:11:31] There are evil toys coming to life.

[00:11:33] There are twisted elves that are crashing the party.

[00:11:35] It's a mess.

[00:11:37] And in a chaotic battle, the family fights for their lives.

[00:11:42] And the one snarky Aunt Dorothy ends up getting swept away.

[00:11:48] And you hate to see it.

[00:11:49] And so now it's time for Max's grandma to come clean.

[00:11:52] She finally fills everybody in on what's happening.

[00:11:56] They've ticked off Krampus.

[00:12:00] Krampus.

[00:12:00] You know Krampus.

[00:12:01] You celebrate Krampus Day, whatever it was.

[00:12:04] Krampus knocked.

[00:12:05] Krampus knocked every December 5th.

[00:12:07] Last year it got out of hand.

[00:12:08] It did get out of hand.

[00:12:10] Krampus, the anti-Santa who punishes those who lose their Christmas spirit.

[00:12:14] Dan was saying, he's coming for me.

[00:12:17] I say, no, sir.

[00:12:18] Yeah.

[00:12:20] You heard about your tree.

[00:12:21] I know.

[00:12:22] I know.

[00:12:23] He's like, you can't.

[00:12:24] You can't do that.

[00:12:25] Is that Arnold?

[00:12:26] Yeah, it is.

[00:12:28] Rick, how was that Arnold?

[00:12:31] Oh, I would say it was six of one, half dozen of the other.

[00:12:34] Yeah.

[00:12:34] How do you?

[00:12:35] On the cards, partly cloudy.

[00:12:37] Good.

[00:12:37] Teach me something.

[00:12:38] How would I say it?

[00:12:39] Get.

[00:12:40] Get.

[00:12:41] Get.

[00:12:42] Tootha.

[00:12:43] Tootha.

[00:12:44] The key is tootha's one word.

[00:12:46] Tootha.

[00:12:46] Tootha.

[00:12:47] Tootha.

[00:12:49] Chopper.

[00:12:50] Chopper.

[00:12:51] Yeah, you're getting there.

[00:12:52] Thanks, Rick.

[00:12:53] Apparently, Grandma had an interaction with Krampus back in the day, and Krampus left

[00:12:58] her to bear witness to Krampus.

[00:13:03] She held it close to the vest, though, until this very moment.

[00:13:07] Cue an epic showdown for the record books.

[00:13:11] Krampus himself looking like Santa who's really been through the ringer there.

[00:13:16] He's got horns.

[00:13:17] He's dramatic with his entrances.

[00:13:20] Yeah.

[00:13:21] And it just starts picking people off.

[00:13:24] Max begins to make things right by facing Krampus, begging for him to take him instead of his

[00:13:32] family.

[00:13:33] And for a moment, it looks like Krampus is taken by his apology and his plea.

[00:13:44] But no, the demons, the crew, they start busting out.

[00:13:48] They're laughing, and they toss Max into a pit of doom.

[00:13:53] Suddenly, Max wakes up.

[00:13:55] It's Christmas morning.

[00:13:56] It was all a dream.

[00:13:57] Yeah, it was.

[00:13:57] Thank goodness.

[00:13:58] It was all a terrible dream.

[00:13:59] His family's downstairs.

[00:14:00] They're opening presents.

[00:14:01] But when Max opens one gift and finds a bell, their smiles face.

[00:14:10] And they all begin to remember the evening that they just had.

[00:14:15] And the camera zooms out, and we see that they are now living in a snow globe on Krampus'

[00:14:23] shelf forever.

[00:14:24] Forever?

[00:14:25] And then they scare us again.

[00:14:27] And that, my friends, was Krampus!

[00:14:32] We did it.

[00:14:33] We did it, everybody.

[00:14:35] Let's take a quick break.

[00:14:35] We'll come back.

[00:14:36] We'll break this movie down here on Deck the Hallmark.

[00:14:40] Welcome back, everybody, to Deck the Hallmark.

[00:14:52] It's Monday.

[00:14:53] It's Christmas movie week.

[00:14:55] It's approaching.

[00:14:56] And we're talking Krampus, which is a nice little, you know, we are aware that Halloween

[00:15:02] is approaching.

[00:15:02] It's a nice little Christmas spooky.

[00:15:07] Let's talk about it.

[00:15:08] Back in 2015, it came out.

[00:15:10] What are our thoughts then?

[00:15:11] What are our thoughts now?

[00:15:13] I'll start with you, Alonzo.

[00:15:14] What's your hot take on this one?

[00:15:16] Yeah, so I saw this in the theater when it came out, and I enjoyed it.

[00:15:19] And, you know, I only like it more as time passes.

[00:15:22] I think it's really effective and funny and creepy.

[00:15:27] And, you know, it's a good, if you're one of those people who, like, wants to start

[00:15:31] your Christmas movies but still feels the need to, like, keep it spooky for Halloween.

[00:15:34] I think this is a good bridge movie.

[00:15:36] You know, there's certainly a handful of those.

[00:15:40] Yeah, I think it works.

[00:15:42] I think it's effective.

[00:15:43] It's directed by Michael Daugherty, who did Trick or Treat, which is a really fun, very, like,

[00:15:50] Halloween-centric Halloween movie.

[00:15:52] It really kind of captures the whole sort of autumn-ness of it.

[00:15:56] I think, you know, sometime, maybe next year, if the Hallmark fall movies are, you know, they

[00:16:12] It has become a staple in my house in October.

[00:16:17] Showed it to Gavin at two years old, right?

[00:16:19] I did.

[00:16:19] I said, sit down, watch it, learn a lesson, son.

[00:16:23] No, my wife and I watch it.

[00:16:26] And I think one of the reasons why I like this movie is they could have made this movie significantly

[00:16:33] scarier if they wanted to.

[00:16:35] And some might say that that is the detriment of this movie.

[00:16:39] Okay?

[00:16:40] I say it's part of what makes this movie work.

[00:16:44] And the fact that my wife, who wouldn't go near a scary movie, can watch this movie and

[00:16:50] have fun around Halloween.

[00:16:53] There's not a lot of the scary movies that come out around Halloween or that you would

[00:17:01] watch at Halloween that my wife would be like, I'm in for that.

[00:17:04] But this works because all of the Krampus demon crew is like very silly.

[00:17:11] The toys, they're silly.

[00:17:13] The gingerbread, they're silly.

[00:17:15] And Krampus, by the time you finally get to Krampus, it's like, okay, all right, I'm

[00:17:19] cool.

[00:17:19] I'm good.

[00:17:20] And so I think that's part of what makes this movie work for me is just the fact that

[00:17:25] they could have if they wanted to.

[00:17:27] And there are other Krampus movies out there that go significantly harder with the horror.

[00:17:34] And this movie, I think, is a pretty safe all play.

[00:17:39] If you're trying to put on a movie that is safe for Halloween, but also you don't want

[00:17:45] the people around you that don't like the scary movies, this movie will work.

[00:17:49] It's fun.

[00:17:49] It's a great time.

[00:17:50] It's well-written.

[00:17:51] Lots of funny moments.

[00:17:54] And it just works for me.

[00:17:55] It works for me.

[00:17:56] And the Christmas works, too.

[00:17:58] Go ahead.

[00:17:59] Sure, yeah.

[00:17:59] Make sure you pick the right Krampus because it turns out Krampus is in public domain.

[00:18:03] It can get away from you.

[00:18:05] It can get away from you.

[00:18:06] A lot of Krampi.

[00:18:07] That's right.

[00:18:08] Dano?

[00:18:09] Yeah, this is a good time.

[00:18:10] This is a fun time at the movies.

[00:18:12] You're going to enjoy yourself.

[00:18:14] It's silly.

[00:18:15] It's stupid.

[00:18:16] It's funny.

[00:18:18] And what elevates it is the cast.

[00:18:20] Allison Tolman, Tony Collette, Conchata Farrell, Adam Scott, David Koechner.

[00:18:25] I would take a remake of Christmas Vacation with this cast.

[00:18:30] It would be an improvement on almost every cast member that had the original.

[00:18:35] Wow.

[00:18:36] Wow.

[00:18:37] Almost everyone.

[00:18:39] Hot take.

[00:18:40] This is what this segment is, right?

[00:18:41] Almost every cast member would be an improvement.

[00:18:44] I'm not telling you which is which, but I'm going to tell you almost every cast member would watch that movie in a heartbeat.

[00:18:49] I definitely wish this movie was rated R.

[00:18:52] I don't think it necessarily needs to be scarier.

[00:18:55] I think it needs to be gorier.

[00:18:56] I think part of the fun of the comedy of this movie is when David Koechner starts saying stuff, his death should equal what he's saying.

[00:19:07] I think that's part of the fun is they make these people kind of terrible, most of them, some of them not.

[00:19:12] And I want to see a bigger payoff, and I would have loved to see it be rated R.

[00:19:18] But your point is well taken, and I think that's as good a sell on a PG-13 version of this as possible, which is, yeah, it brings into the fold some folks who might not be down with horror movies.

[00:19:29] But as it stands, the cast elevates this material that is silly, but they take it dead serious, and that makes it a fun time.

[00:19:36] I mean, you can't watch this movie and not have an absolute blast.

[00:19:40] I think it is worth seeing.

[00:19:41] But I like the gore, sure, maybe more blood.

[00:19:45] But I think that pulling somebody in the snow out of the shot or pulling someone, that I think is really compelling and works really well.

[00:19:53] It needs to be like conjuring level blood or jump scares.

[00:19:57] I'm just saying that the kill, like half of a horror movie is the kills for a movie like this.

[00:20:02] And I could have done with some more, like most of the people that they dispose of end up coming back.

[00:20:09] Are whisked away.

[00:20:10] Yeah.

[00:20:10] And they either come back and they're not killed.

[00:20:13] And that's the one downer for me is like give me like.

[00:20:17] But they're not dying.

[00:20:17] They're being pulled into a deep, dark hole.

[00:20:20] Yeah.

[00:20:20] Yeah.

[00:20:21] What did we talk about with Brendan Elliott when he was in Chucky?

[00:20:23] He's like, my kill is one of the most famous kills.

[00:20:25] Like the best horror movies of this ilk have some iconic kills in them.

[00:20:31] And this movie lacks that because it's PG-13.

[00:20:34] But I'm not mad at it.

[00:20:35] I enjoyed myself quite a bit.

[00:20:38] It's time for all the feels where we talk about what in this movie gave us feels.

[00:20:41] Alonzo.

[00:20:42] I heart Omi.

[00:20:44] Like I just, I love that character.

[00:20:46] I think she's great.

[00:20:47] She is my, she is also my one way what.

[00:20:49] Yeah, me too.

[00:20:50] One of mine.

[00:20:52] But no, I think she is awesome.

[00:20:55] To piggy piggyback on what Dan was just saying, the character actor bonanza here is top shelf.

[00:21:01] I mean, I was excited to see this movie just based on who was in it, let alone the Christmas

[00:21:05] of it all.

[00:21:06] RIP Conchata Farrell.

[00:21:08] You were one of the greats.

[00:21:09] But like, yeah.

[00:21:10] Adam Scott, Tony Collette.

[00:21:12] A huge fan of Elson Tolman from Fargo.

[00:21:15] From Fargo.

[00:21:16] Yeah.

[00:21:16] So like, love all of that.

[00:21:18] The kid, MJ Anthony is really good.

[00:21:21] He's great.

[00:21:21] He's the kid from Chef.

[00:21:23] Yeah.

[00:21:23] He is.

[00:21:24] You're right.

[00:21:25] Yes, Chef.

[00:21:25] Chef is a great movie.

[00:21:26] Love that movie.

[00:21:27] So, you know, the whole thing of the, I hear what you're saying about the kills, but I'd

[00:21:35] say the suspense in this movie is still pretty great.

[00:21:37] Yeah, it's not bad.

[00:21:38] Beth under the car.

[00:21:40] Yeah, that's a good scene.

[00:21:41] With like the feet and the jack in the box and all that stuff is like very tense and scary

[00:21:45] in a fun way.

[00:21:46] Um, despite the sort of culture clash that's going on between the two families, you know,

[00:21:54] the sort of red state, blue state of it all.

[00:21:56] Like, I love the moments where Tony Collette and Alison Tolman really get to like have sisterly

[00:22:01] moments.

[00:22:02] Like they, these characters are never made into such broad caricatures that they can't exist

[00:22:07] as human beings.

[00:22:08] And like, even Adam Scott and David Koechner have these, these moments where they kind

[00:22:12] of get each other, um, as dads, you know, and, and it's funny how we're like, and I

[00:22:18] think when you look at the outtakes, I think they were going to make maybe more of this at

[00:22:21] one point and they didn't, but clearly like Adam Scott is like, what guns?

[00:22:25] Oh no, terrible.

[00:22:26] And then as soon as like the monster show, it was like, where are the guns?

[00:22:29] Give me the guns.

[00:22:30] So that's, that's funny.

[00:22:31] So yeah, I like that.

[00:22:32] Those were my feels.

[00:22:33] Um, the open, I knew I was going to be into this movie immediately.

[00:22:37] The opening sequence is, is great.

[00:22:40] And it show showcases the chaos that this movie is, is going to be, uh, go ahead.

[00:22:46] Question about the opening sequence.

[00:22:47] This might be a Mandela effect thing because in the trailer, they use Andy Williams's it's

[00:22:53] the most wonderful time of the year.

[00:22:54] And in the movie they use Bing Crosby.

[00:22:56] It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

[00:22:58] I could swear that when I saw this movie in theaters, it opened with the most wonderful

[00:23:02] time of the year.

[00:23:03] I thought it did too.

[00:23:04] And Dave even found a review that said so.

[00:23:06] So why does the home video version have Crosby?

[00:23:10] I can't imagine that's any cheaper than Andy Williams.

[00:23:12] There's no way it's cheaper than Andy Williams.

[00:23:14] I don't, I don't know.

[00:23:14] Either way it works.

[00:23:16] Yeah, sure.

[00:23:17] It's really like just kind of coming in and the slow motion and the chaos and then coming

[00:23:22] in and not expecting to see a fight taking place with the kid.

[00:23:26] Like all of it just really works.

[00:23:28] And I think it sets the table really well.

[00:23:30] There's some silly parts in this movie, some funny, some scary, but make no mistake.

[00:23:34] Everything David Koechner says is a stitch in this movie.

[00:23:37] He has so many lines that only could be said by David Koechner.

[00:23:42] Like even like, I don't even want to, but like when he, when they're like, can your, can your

[00:23:47] SUV still dry?

[00:23:48] He calls his SUV Lucinda and he, can it still drive in the snow?

[00:23:52] He's like, Lucinda.

[00:23:53] If I point her due East, she'll be on the beaches of Normandy by sunrise.

[00:23:57] Like, come on, man.

[00:23:59] Like that is, that is the best.

[00:24:01] Like David Koechner being this like truck owning, like gun loving.

[00:24:07] He's perfect in this movie.

[00:24:09] And I found myself laughing at just reactions from David Koechner.

[00:24:14] Wonderful, wonderful job by him in this movie.

[00:24:17] So there you go.

[00:24:18] Let's take one more quick break.

[00:24:19] We'll come back.

[00:24:19] We'll get to the way.

[00:24:20] What?

[00:24:20] What?

[00:24:20] The Hallmark here on deck.

[00:24:22] The Hallmark.

[00:24:32] Welcome back, everybody.

[00:24:34] We're talking Krampus today.

[00:24:37] Happy Halloween.

[00:24:38] Happy Christmas.

[00:24:39] Krampus, let's get to the wait.

[00:24:40] What?

[00:24:40] We're talking about whether we made a Skull Wait Watch.

[00:24:42] Alonzo.

[00:24:44] So the first one I had written down was like, where do these weird vintage toys come from?

[00:24:48] And then I realized, oh, wait, there was the big sack.

[00:24:50] Yeah.

[00:24:51] So that, that, that was answered for me.

[00:24:53] And I just, it took me a second to put that together.

[00:24:56] You know, again, this is one of those, you, you have to go with the premise that Krampus

[00:25:01] is real and the da, da, da.

[00:25:02] So my, my big wait, what is it?

[00:25:04] Maybe Omi might have brought this up before.

[00:25:07] Yeah.

[00:25:07] In the past as like a warning.

[00:25:10] Or even right away, right away even.

[00:25:13] Sure.

[00:25:14] Yeah.

[00:25:14] It, it takes her quite a while to finally be like, oh, by the way.

[00:25:17] Yeah.

[00:25:18] The fact that Omi decides to wax poetic about her time with Krampus for the first time after

[00:25:24] people have been maimed is unacceptable.

[00:25:27] Beth is dead.

[00:25:29] Yeah.

[00:25:29] Beth is dead, grandma.

[00:25:31] Yeah.

[00:25:31] You could have stopped it.

[00:25:32] But the best part about that is, is that she finishes it and David Koechner immediately

[00:25:35] doesn't believe her.

[00:25:37] So it's like, he immediately says Jesus H almighty, which is one of my favorite line readings of

[00:25:44] all time.

[00:25:45] And he says, next thing you know, at Easter, she's going to be talking about her rabid

[00:25:48] bunnies.

[00:25:49] And it's like, well, she didn't say anything, but also nobody believes her.

[00:25:53] They think she's crazy, which is also stupid because it's like, look at everything that's

[00:25:57] happened.

[00:25:58] Yeah.

[00:25:58] Of course she's right.

[00:25:59] You got a better explanation for this?

[00:26:01] Yeah.

[00:26:01] I don't think so.

[00:26:02] Geesh.

[00:26:03] That's kind of all I got.

[00:26:04] Otherwise it's pretty, you know, it's consistent with itself.

[00:26:09] Yes.

[00:26:09] Correct.

[00:26:10] I haven't like been at a like department store or a Walmart or a target or whatever on Christmas

[00:26:17] Eve in a very long time.

[00:26:20] Um, but maybe do the, the, the Christmas show pageant somewhere else other than, other than

[00:26:29] the back of a store with a curtain separating the store for one.

[00:26:34] These kids are going to have to be projecting very loudly.

[00:26:37] Um, there's people running all around, uh, getting in quite the tussles over TVs and whatnot.

[00:26:43] Some of that's going to leak into the play.

[00:26:45] It's just, it's a, it's a, it's an Ohio thing.

[00:26:47] You Midwesterns, Midwesterners do it differently.

[00:26:52] Um, yeah.

[00:26:53] Can we talk about this 2015 and a different time, obviously, but is it really that different

[00:26:59] of a time to where a grown Santa Claus checking out a teenager's butt is played for laughs?

[00:27:06] Yeah.

[00:27:06] Like, come on.

[00:27:08] And then also mom, not like call somebody cause this is he's been caught on camera, checking

[00:27:16] out a minor, call somebody makes.

[00:27:19] Well, I don't think she noticed it until that moment or she probably would have had

[00:27:21] it framed, you know?

[00:27:23] Yeah.

[00:27:23] That's true.

[00:27:23] That's true.

[00:27:24] But just like, once you see it, when you're putting on the, on the wall, I'd be like,

[00:27:27] I got to call somebody.

[00:27:28] This guy, this guy's a, the, not the best person in the world.

[00:27:31] That's all I got.

[00:27:32] Dano.

[00:27:32] So I only have two more.

[00:27:33] And my first one is for a movie called Krampus, we get decidedly little of him and not in

[00:27:39] a jaws way where he's always, that would be fine.

[00:27:43] But instead we spend a lot of our movie with these trinkets, these little toys that are fun.

[00:27:49] But for a movie called Krampus, I would have liked to have seen more.

[00:27:53] Like you don't really get a lot of Krampus for the meat of this movie.

[00:27:56] And I think that that's for a movie like this, that doesn't have any like artistic pedigree

[00:28:02] to be something that it's not.

[00:28:03] It knows exactly what it is.

[00:28:05] I feel like we should get more Krampus and maybe that's just me.

[00:28:07] Maybe that belongs in the hot take, but my big one was Umi.

[00:28:10] So there you are.

[00:28:11] There you are.

[00:28:11] And then my, my other one is, uh, these mythical Christmas demons that these toys come to

[00:28:18] life, this Jack in the box that can swallow people whole, all of them can be killed by

[00:28:22] simple gunfire, which is really nice.

[00:28:24] Like, uh, you know what I mean?

[00:28:26] Like to have mythical toys that have come alive, come alive.

[00:28:30] Usually there's further complications with how do we get rid of them?

[00:28:34] Guns don't work.

[00:28:35] But as luck would have it, turns out gunfire works just fine here.

[00:28:40] Um, yeah, it's a good what the homework though.

[00:28:42] Like what happens to, are they like respawn back at the, yeah, what happens?

[00:28:46] I mean, we caught a break there though.

[00:28:48] You would think with all the gun talk from David Koechner, the guns are going to be useless.

[00:28:52] No, no.

[00:28:52] You, you need those guns.

[00:28:54] You can eat them.

[00:28:55] You could also eat the ginger red men as it turns out, especially if you're a dog.

[00:28:59] That's right.

[00:29:00] No problem.

[00:29:01] Yeah.

[00:29:01] That's all I got.

[00:29:02] Uh, it's time for what the hallmark is where we wonder what could have been, maybe happened,

[00:29:05] gives them clarity to any questions that we still have.

[00:29:07] Alonzo, what are you still wondering about?

[00:29:10] Well, two, and they're both relatively minor.

[00:29:12] But first of all, is the DHL guy okay?

[00:29:16] Because he's the one guy who's not in the family that we see like dying in the blizzard.

[00:29:21] And I just, you know, I want to make sure that he too, you know, got back to normal on,

[00:29:26] on Christmas morning.

[00:29:27] Um, also, so the, the end of the movie, yeah, my first thought was like, they're like,

[00:29:31] they're somehow sort of trapped in the snow globe.

[00:29:33] But from what I've read about it, the, the, the idea is that basically those snow globes

[00:29:39] is how Krampus keeps an eye on people.

[00:29:42] And like, they're getting, they get, they're getting another chance, but he's watching.

[00:29:46] So, you know, be good for goodness sake.

[00:29:48] I thought they were caught in there and they all died at the end of this movie.

[00:29:52] Right.

[00:29:52] I thought that originally too, but, but as I've read, like, is that the Krampus lore or is

[00:29:58] it specific to this movie?

[00:30:00] Aren't we all in a snow globe?

[00:30:01] Amen.

[00:30:01] It feels like that sometimes.

[00:30:04] I think it is.

[00:30:05] I think it's specific to this movie, but you're right.

[00:30:07] It is.

[00:30:07] It's a little vague as far as how that's presented.

[00:30:10] But my question though, is wouldn't Omi already be under surveillance since she's been spared

[00:30:16] once by Krampus?

[00:30:18] That's why that doesn't make sense.

[00:30:20] Yeah.

[00:30:20] So does she now get a second break?

[00:30:22] Cause I guess technically this one's not her fault cause it's Max and not her who transgressed.

[00:30:27] Nah, they're all dead.

[00:30:28] I don't know.

[00:30:28] That's enough to convince me that they're all dead.

[00:30:30] I have some theological questions.

[00:30:32] So the difference though, between.

[00:30:34] Krampus works in mysterious ways.

[00:30:35] Yes.

[00:30:36] Between her experience and Max's experience.

[00:30:38] You cannot know.

[00:30:39] Is Krampus just leaves her and says, Hey, tell everybody.

[00:30:43] Tell everybody about what you see basically.

[00:30:45] Right.

[00:30:45] Max gets thrown into a hole, you know?

[00:30:49] True.

[00:30:49] So it's different.

[00:30:50] But he gets the bell.

[00:30:50] He does get the bell.

[00:30:52] I'm just trying here.

[00:30:53] I'm trying.

[00:30:53] No, no, no.

[00:30:54] I think it's food for thought.

[00:30:57] No.

[00:30:57] And my, obviously my, what the homework is what's, what's going on there.

[00:31:00] Yeah.

[00:31:00] I think that like, like Krampus has clearly done this before and he was going to do it

[00:31:07] again.

[00:31:07] I think for sure he's collecting snow globes.

[00:31:09] Well, people are just living inside.

[00:31:11] What does life look like for them now?

[00:31:13] Are they able to go outside their house and just look at the, what happens if you try

[00:31:17] to leave the snow globe?

[00:31:19] Right.

[00:31:20] Well, that's the thing.

[00:31:20] I think, like I said, what I've, the, the, the, the official story here is that they're

[00:31:25] not trapped in the snow globe, but the snow globe is an observational device.

[00:31:29] Is that the official one?

[00:31:31] I mean, look, that's what the Wikipedia says.

[00:31:33] And I think I've, I've seen interviews with the director where he's talked about it in

[00:31:37] that, in those terms.

[00:31:39] So, yeah.

[00:31:40] And I think that makes a little more sense.

[00:31:42] And, and there's, in fact, there's an alternate ending on the Blu-ray where he opens the bell

[00:31:49] and nobody particularly reacts to it except for Omi who kind of gives them a look like

[00:31:53] eh.

[00:31:54] And, and then they, they move on and they don't, you don't get the snow globe.

[00:31:58] You just go out the window and that's the end.

[00:31:59] I love that.

[00:32:00] I think that might work a little bit better.

[00:32:02] Yeah.

[00:32:02] Because there's some mixed minds also that, but I also think like the kid shouldn't be,

[00:32:08] he's, if, if, if we do normal Christmas movie lore, he shouldn't be punished.

[00:32:12] You know what I mean?

[00:32:13] Like he's the only one that believed in Santa and then he tried to get it back.

[00:32:16] And like, yeah, I, that also raises the larger question of like, why isn't Krampus, you know,

[00:32:23] punishing everybody else in this movie who never believed, who stopped believing in Santa

[00:32:28] a long time ago.

[00:32:29] Does Santa have dominion over Krampus?

[00:32:31] Does he have like, can he just, does he have to give him the A-OK?

[00:32:34] If they would have just said Santa, the mention of free will so that we may decide for our

[00:32:39] In a mention of the word Santa, does Krampus flee?

[00:32:42] Like, you know what I mean?

[00:32:43] Like, is it, is he that scared?

[00:32:46] I mean, you know.

[00:32:47] In some cultures they travel together.

[00:32:49] Yeah.

[00:32:50] Like good, good, good children get the presents, bad children get the switch and thrown into

[00:32:55] Krampus' sack.

[00:32:56] Yeah.

[00:32:56] So I think there are more colleagues than.

[00:32:59] Well, there was no set of hoof prints there that was when Krampus carried you.

[00:33:03] My guess is that the fact that he ripped up his thing on Christmas Eve was one of the

[00:33:10] deciding factors.

[00:33:11] It wasn't like a, hey, I'm going to ask my mom in the summertime.

[00:33:14] But he was the last vestige.

[00:33:16] He was it.

[00:33:17] Nobody else in there cared.

[00:33:18] Yeah.

[00:33:19] Yeah.

[00:33:19] And they broke him.

[00:33:19] I thought he was not doing a good enough job, clearly, of like spreading the gospel

[00:33:23] of St. Nicholas if the rest of the family was like, yeah, whatever.

[00:33:26] By the way, this reminds me, have either of y'all ever watched the classic 1980 roller disco

[00:33:32] musical Xanadu every day.

[00:33:34] Listen, if I had a nickel for everything to do conversation that we have in this office.

[00:33:39] It's a fun movie.

[00:33:40] I will defend it.

[00:33:41] It's it's silly, but it's fun.

[00:33:42] Anyway, here, though, I'm getting there.

[00:33:45] We go at the beginning of the movie.

[00:33:47] You have the lead character.

[00:33:49] The whole thing is like he's he he he works for a record company doing like big billboards

[00:33:53] for things.

[00:33:54] He wants to be an artist, but he's blocked.

[00:33:56] He can't come up with anything.

[00:33:57] And at the beginning of the movie, you see him like tearing up a painting and think

[00:34:02] throwing it out the window and the pieces all travel and they bring the muses to life.

[00:34:07] And Olivia Newton-John is the muse who inspires him to create this roller disco palace, whatever.

[00:34:12] But when I saw the kid throw the pieces out the window and they all go somewhere, I was

[00:34:15] like, oh, my God, it's the opening of Xanadu.

[00:34:19] We are.

[00:34:20] I mean, we said that's the greatest thing I've ever said on this show.

[00:34:22] I text the brand immediately.

[00:34:23] I was like, dude, did you get the Xanadu reference?

[00:34:26] Xanadu is on a dome.

[00:34:28] Y'all would have fun with Xanadu.

[00:34:29] Look, you stop selling.

[00:34:32] Somebody threw a ripped up painting out a window and Olivia Newton-John comes to life.

[00:34:36] That's hysterical.

[00:34:37] Yeah.

[00:34:38] I'm not not in.

[00:34:39] I mean, listen.

[00:34:41] And it just gets nuttier from there.

[00:34:43] So, you know.

[00:34:44] Did we do it?

[00:34:45] I think we did.

[00:34:46] I think we did it.

[00:34:47] And that means we finished the slate.

[00:34:48] That's it.

[00:34:49] Another year of Mondays in the books.

[00:34:52] You know.

[00:34:53] Did we have that clip package ready to go?

[00:34:54] I will remember you.

[00:34:58] And I will just say it's been so much fun doing everything from movies you missed last

[00:35:04] year to some classics we missed along the way.

[00:35:09] This was so much fun.

[00:35:10] Alonzo, of course, this holiday season you'll be joining us.

[00:35:12] Netflix has a larger slate than they did last year, which is great news for us.

[00:35:18] And they all look like they're going to be a lot of fun.

[00:35:21] So, you're going to be joining us this holiday season covering those movies, which is going

[00:35:25] to be so much fun.

[00:35:26] Anything else for the people, Alonzo, before we leave?

[00:35:29] You know, be kind to each other and, you know, give out full-size candy bars.

[00:35:35] I love that.

[00:35:36] There you go.

[00:35:36] I love that.

[00:35:37] Until next time, we'll be the first to wish you a Merry Christmas.
