[00:00:01] Hi, I'm Bram and I love friendly competitions. I'm Brian, I like friendly competitions. I despise friendly competitions. And this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast. Deck The Hallmark Podcast. Friends host this podcast. We hope you like this jolly podcast. Hi everybody. Happy Thursday.

[00:00:36] You thought we were going to cover earthquake underground. Underground. I don't like it. Turns out. Not doing it. Not doing it. Not gonna do it. I said no. Despite the movie being out readily available people. The problem is brand.

[00:00:55] We've just had to listen to the overwhelming majority of people that listen to our podcast, which is this throngs of people who are all in songs. Nope. Throng to throng throng throng. They have been demanding that we fill out an Oscar ballot.

[00:01:13] They're like you have to do this. We can't let another year go by without hearing what the boys think of the Oscars. That's big. It's big. You've seen movies. The 96th. I've seen movies. The 96th. Dude, can you wait? Dude, 100, 2028. 100 is gonna be huge.

[00:01:35] Our preview show that year. Holy moly. But yes, we are all including Aaron going to fill out our ballot for the 96th. Academy Award and a winner is going to be able to go to canopy.com and pick out a $200 or less. Canopy.com mean probably 100% mean cameo.

[00:01:58] Cameo. Yes, we started canopy. Oh, you look for the movie. You're gonna go to you're gonna go to find a lot of these. Yes, cameo. And we're gonna be able to pick any any cameo we want to for $200 or less. I don't really know what's out there.

[00:02:14] I don't know what's available, but just a weird idea I had and now we're going with it. Hold on tight, Colin Mockery. I'm coming. Oh my gosh. Can you imagine? Can you imagine? I can't categories brand 23 categories. We're gonna we're gonna choose the old best. We sure are.

[00:02:29] Are we ready to get started for those of you that are watching on filo file? I think he's less DTH. Thanks for doing that. You're gonna be able to follow along as well. Thanks to this right here.

[00:02:38] There is your there's your we're filling out the same exact thing. The same exact thing. Same exact thing. That is. Are we ready to go? Let's start at the bottom. Let's start at the bottom. Now we're here. You actually paid us to do this.

[00:02:50] You can catch the Oscars live March 10th ABC. They're a big sponsor of ours. And they love us. They don't for we hate them. My kind of my overall like belief is that why have that if you can have filo where you can

[00:03:07] watch right the Hallmark the lifetime. Yeah, date the Hallmark all in one nice place. Of course, easy peasy. Go to canopy.com. The fact that we're not nominated for anything is actually pretty unbelievable because we're

[00:03:20] we bake stuff and it's kind of us the host of the deck is the premier award show. Yeah. Yeah. To do this for the Oscars give a little boost. Yes. Well something up first is best visual effects. I saw all of these movies you did. Yes.

[00:03:35] Oh, not Napoleon. I didn't see Napoleon. There are some good effects here. There's no better effects that why do you want me to read them? Yeah, go for it. The Creator Godzilla minus one Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 mission impossible. I don't have time for this.

[00:03:55] We dead reckoning part one and Napoleon. Okay, great. Thank you brain. Thank you voice nominee guy. Yes. Um, hey, I is just getting so I'm going to go Godzilla minus one. There's a judge. It's a good. There's no worlds where there's any effect.

[00:04:12] I can't believe Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was even nominated there. The Godzilla minus one is an absolute triumph Godzilla minus one for me. Yes, I loved Godzilla minus one. I'm going with the Creator to win this one because you like the movie.

[00:04:28] I did like the movie but I also part of the reason why I love the movie is I walked out going boy that looked amazing effects room. And so while I you know, most people didn't like as much as I did.

[00:04:40] I do think the one thing you walked away with that movie. Oh, yeah, it was breathtaking to look at visually. So I'll give it the award. No with earthquake earthquake underground ride in the I'll go mission impossible. I hear it's looking great in post. Yeah, Aaron.

[00:04:58] I'm going with Godzilla minus one. Great. Great. Great best sound. The Creator maestro mission impossible dead reckoning part one Oppenheimer the zone of interest. Best sounds. Yeah.

[00:05:21] And can we nominate that right there unfair to the others Brian says we can do right in so yeah, I'm gonna go.

[00:05:31] I'm gonna go with Oppenheimer which I know is a bold take seeing as how most people's one complaint about him is that the sound sucks in the movies. I thought the sound was pretty captivating in that movie, especially cuz bomb also.

[00:05:50] This is the one movie where people don't have that complaint. That's exactly right. It's also it's like I would be this is clearly the best sound. I think that's my problem is like sometimes you have a will win and a should win.

[00:06:03] This is what Aaron was talking about early. She's like sometimes on my ballot.

[00:06:06] I'm just gonna go with my heart sometimes I'm gonna go with my gut but in this case, I would be more okay with Oppenheimer losing best picture than I would it losing best sound like the sounds the whole this the whole to correct. It's a whole ball. Yeah.

[00:06:20] Yeah. So yeah, it's Oppenheimer for that's in her because I heard a lot of chatter about the sound and complaints about it before I'd seen the movie and so watching the movie. I was really aware of it and I complaints. Yeah.

[00:06:30] Yeah, like the the complaints that it was hard to hear a point. And so when that was happening, I to me I was thinking this is intentional and I appreciated it. So I often have is my choice as well three across the board and mom.

[00:06:43] You got to give it up for the Trinity test scene. I mean, yeah, yep, Aaron. Yeah, as someone who definitely saw Oppenheimer also going to vote Oppenheimer. Wow. I mean maestro sounds pretty great. Maestro doesn't have much going.

[00:06:57] It feels like it should be a real contender because it was a sound. I don't seem too easy because it's literally. Yeah. Yeah, we got to go to the shorts next brand and I know that you saw all of the live action and animated shorts. I did.

[00:07:12] So I do get if you guys want to kind of defer to me on this one, but let's start with best short live action. Best shot live action. The after invincible night of fortune red white and blue. The wonderful story of Henry Sugar.

[00:07:37] You really like that, aren't you? This voice already is getting more and professional. How we got that guy? Henry Sugar. I'm voting sugar. I'm voting the wonderful story of Henry Sugar. As am I.

[00:07:51] And I will just say, I'm not just doing it because they're telling me it's a wonderful story. I'm doing it because of the sugar. Yeah, you're in it for the sugar. I'm going to go night of fortune. Night of fortune because it's right in the middle.

[00:08:06] Three right down the middle. Right. It is number three. There's no zero here. See how that works. Aaron? Choose one. They both chose sugar. I want sugar because of the sugar addiction that we're all facing collectively. As a nation. In a world.

[00:08:21] This one was really tough for me. I think there are several. There are several. You're a short girl. The shorts are my favorites every year. Have you seen them? I have not, but I have done some research into them.

[00:08:31] My wife and I, before we had kids, went to the movie theater to see all the shorts every year. Yeah, I typically do. Shorts on display at the theater. It's amazing because they're BOGO, I believe. When they're at the theater, you can get.

[00:08:42] You just buy one ticket and you see all the shorts together. You can get one cargo, get one free. You can get one free. Mix and match. Two cargo mix and match. Any G.E. And even jorts included. Jorts included. Man, it's unbelievable.

[00:08:54] Big pockets, small pockets, no pockets. It doesn't matter. Athletics. No pocket shorts. Why would you? Basketball. Sure. Go ahead, Aaron. Anyway, so I think several of these are really good.

[00:09:03] I wouldn't be mad if a couple others won, but because I think it is an important topic right now, I think red, white, and blue. Yeah, great. I'd love to tell you I know what any of these movies are about, but I do not.

[00:09:14] I could tell you right now if you really wanted to know. I do. What's red, white, and blue? The topic of red, white, and blue. So the After is... I'm just going to go in order. You have ten more seconds. Okay.

[00:09:23] The After is a rideshare driver who is grieving and the passenger that he is with helps him work through some trauma. Pass. Invincible is... It's supposed to be a Tom Cruise movie. Collateral.

[00:09:34] Invincible is a man in prison gets a visit with his family and then decides that he's going to do everything that he can to get out of prison. Okay. Chop shank. Popcorn. I don't really understand, which is why I don't... It's a goodnight. The goodnight of fortune.

[00:09:49] Something about a man whose wife has died and another man whose wife has died, but maybe he's lying. Pass. Man from honor. The more identifying. I couldn't follow the plot and I'm not voting. Wish I had this information before I voted, but it is what it is.

[00:10:04] Red, white, and blue is a mom and daughter on a road trip to... The daughter needs an abortion and they need to find one. And the wonderful story of Henry Sugar is... Part one of four. Their short stories... That shouldn't count. Written by Roald Dahl.

[00:10:19] Roald Ode, the Wonka fella. So when you chose that, I was like, I don't think he knows, but he knows. He's got a thing for sugar, that fella. Best shot animated letter to a pig. 95 cents is our uniform. Oh, oh. Pachyderm. Pachyderm. War is over.

[00:10:45] Inspired by the music of John and Yoko. Can I go with uh-oh? Yeah, my choice. Erin, you got a rundown of these? Honestly, without giving a rundown, Pachyderm is what I would choose for Dan. Wow. Oh, for Dan. Oh, what about me? Oh, we get personalized suggestions?

[00:11:05] Well, it's a story about a family overcoming some trauma and realizing that no matter how much you run away from it, you can't always like bury it. I'm going to go with it. Pachyderm. Bingo. Done. That's my answer. I like letters to a pig.

[00:11:18] Yeah, I thought you might. Thank you. I'm going to go with. It's about the Holocaust. Yeah. I'm going to go with 95 cents. Got 95 cents in an Oscars one. Yep, yep. There you go. Do you know what that one's about? 95 cents?

[00:11:34] I am in this moment trying to remember because I do. Somebody needs a nickel to get a dollar. That's exactly right. But I'm going with war is over. Sure. Right. And I have it open right here. Look at that.

[00:11:48] An inmate on death row reflects his own mistakes while facing his own mortality. Wow. There you have it. That's what I look for in animation. Production design. Production design. Barbie. Killers of the flower moon. Napoleon. Oppenheimer. Poor things. All right. What does this mean? Production design.

[00:12:13] Like, is it like the set? It's basically, yes. It's set design and what it just looks. Set deck and production. How they made the movie look. Sure. All right. Oh, I'm not Napoleon. I'm not seeing the rest of these I've seen.

[00:12:30] I think the most striking aesthetic of any movie I saw this year was poor things. Wow. What Yorgos Lanthimos does in that movie creates. It's an it's a different universe that he creates and it's almost all practical, especially when they change countries in that movie.

[00:12:41] He does a fun little full set deck of them going to this country and it's fascinating. Interesting. A lot like Barbie when going from the Barbie universe to similar. I'm going to go with Barbie for the same reason. So am I. Look at us.

[00:12:57] I'm going poor things just because maybe that's the award that that movie is a great movie and they deserve an award and I think that Barbie will win production design. But maybe I'll get one against the field here and I'm going with poor things. All right.

[00:13:06] There you have it producer Aaron. This is a tough one. I think. Poor things should win, but I voted Barbie just because I had the most fun watching that. Of course, it's a lot to them.

[00:13:20] I mean like reading about the amount of detail they put into making sure everything was to a specific scale and bringing the world of Barbie to life was fun. The set deck and Barbie is unbelievable. Yeah, it's great. Yeah, that's original song.

[00:13:35] Best original song the fire inside from Flamin' Hot. I'm just Ken from Barbie. It never went away from American Symphony. Was Azari a song for my people from killers of the flower moon. I'm just Ken from Barbie.

[00:13:54] Was Azari a song for my people from killers of the flower moon. What was I made for from Barbie? Wow. Wow. Yeah, wow, wow, wow. I forgot about Flamin' Hot. Flamin' Hot the Cheeto movie for Hulu.

[00:14:13] I'm going to go with the killers of the flower moon song and the reason I'm going to go with that song is because I also think this is a movie that they're going to give some nods to early on to I think two Barbie songs at the same

[00:14:22] time are going to cancel each other out. That's my fear, especially since I'm just Ken is they've nominated it so he can perform it. If I'm just Ken wasn't in there, I think what was I made for would win, which should win.

[00:14:38] This is a should win will win situation for me should win. What was I made for will win the killers of fireman. She's here. Wow, that was striking. Unbelievable. I'll do in the fire inside as a reminder to myself to watch that movie.

[00:14:54] So I'll go with that one. I'm going to go with what was I made for Bobby. I am also going with what was I made for. What should win? We're going to do one more than we take a quick break.

[00:15:05] Best original score American fiction Laura Karpman, Indiana Jones and a dial of destiny. John Williams killer of the flower moon. Robbie Robertson up and hammer Ludwig Gorgson. Poor thing. Jack's can fendix fendrix fendrix. I'm getting where this incorrect. You know what? I'm going to go to the Academy.

[00:15:38] I'm going to go with American fiction as I was watching American fiction. So good multiple times. I was like, I need to go and track down that song and so a beautiful score and I'm going to go with it. That's enough for me.

[00:15:53] I'm going with that as well. Give me Oppenheimer here. I think this is kind of a default situation. I don't think that there's a front runner in this category. And I think since Oppenheimer is going to sweep a lot of the bigger awards, at

[00:16:06] least that's what the data tells us. We could be a big upset evening. But I just Oppenheimer moves over. There's what there is one track in Oppenheimer that is insane. Yes, it's I mean, it's impressively done. There's no doubt about Oppenheimer for me.

[00:16:21] And this is one that hurts my heart because I am a John Williams fan. Yeah, just love him so much. Johnny Dubbs. I'm going with Oppenheimer. All right. Good answer. Hey, let's take a quick break. We'll come back. Next up, international features of film editing heavy hitters.

[00:16:42] So much more here on Deck the Hallmark. Little ones me you're looking for. Welcome back to Deck the Hallmark. We're doing Oscar Oscar ballot Oscar ballot time. If you're watching us on Filo, you can you can watch us. You can watch it.

[00:17:09] You can see it in front of you what it is and you can maybe even do it yourself if you want to. Next is the best makeup and hair styling. Yeah, best makeup and hair styling. We're never going to finish this episode. Golda. So many left my stroke.

[00:17:26] All these words. This takes a half hour. Oppenheimer poor thing satiety of the snow. The consistency with which they are saying Oppenheimer, though. It's like they recorded it. It's unbelievable. It's the same every time. It is the fact that they got a nom, though, in this particular category

[00:17:45] makes me think that they're going to win it. So I'm going to go with Golda. Poor things. Absolutely poor things. The makeup and hair styling is so starkly different and distinct in this movie. It has Mary that movie.

[00:18:00] It's a great movie and the makeup and everything about what's on screen. It has a very unique vibe, which is a Yorges Lent the most. Not everything can be poor things. Dan, that's going to be my new go to.

[00:18:09] Yeah, we've not gotten to some of the bigger words when they're not going to win any of them. So just wait. I'm glad to see society of the snow getting a nom. So I'm going to go with that. Of course you are. Erin.

[00:18:24] I'm glad that Dan gave his opinion on this before I had to vote because the only movie that I knew anything about for makeup was Maestro. But that's a controversial makeup pic and I didn't want to go there. So I'm going to go with poor things.

[00:18:35] That's a very wise decision on your part. Although I kind of wish you'd said Maestro just sort of like really, Erin? Really? You're going to do that, huh? You know, more pride or more prejudice. I don't know. Could be. Yeah. 100%. Best international feature.

[00:18:55] Looking forward to the announcer giving us these. Here we go. Best international feature film. Get my glasses out. Lo Capitano. Actually, these are going to be pretty easy for me. The best movie in the world. Spain, the teachers lounge, Germany. Zone of interest, United Kingdom. Nailed that.

[00:19:16] I think this is a situation where anytime you see a best picture nominated for best international feature film, they usually win it. Zone of interest. Probably going to win this bad boy going away. Be my guess. Yeah, I think the United Kingdom should be included in international. Interesting.

[00:19:34] There's a hot take from Brandon Gray. We're still a part of the crown. Interesting. You know, we came from them, therefore we are all still in a sense one if you think about it that way.

[00:19:44] I mean, when Dan goes to London in a couple weeks, doesn't even need his passport. That's exactly right. That's exactly right. Hamilton's playing there, it's playing here. I'm just saying it's not like, I don't think it should count. I don't think it should count.

[00:19:57] I'm going to go with zone of interest. Yeah. I'll stick with Society in the Snow here. Yeah, you will. I'm going to clean sleep. Aaron. I made my pick based on plot and I'm going with zone of interest. There you have it. Best film editing. Best film editing.

[00:20:20] Anatomy of a Fall. Lorna Sinekal. Good luck out there. The Holdovers. Kevin Tanning. Killers of the Flower Moon. Thelma Schoonmaker. Oppenheimer. Oh, you missed it. Oppenheimer. Jennifer Lame. I bet she's not. Poor Thing. Yorgo's Marvelopolis-dis. No, no, no. Cannot air it. Cannot air Marvelopolis-dis.

[00:20:54] Oppenheimer is the best, one of the best edited movies I've ever, like the best edited movie I've ever seen. I, like, once again, like in these technical categories it's hard for me to go against it. Oppenheimer. Yeah, I agree with that.

[00:21:10] It was so, the story was told so well and it just felt seamless. I'm going to go Anatomy of a Fall. Interesting. Thank you. Yeah, I mean, Oppenheimer is definitely a movie that I saw and it was so well edited. So Oppenheimer for me.

[00:21:27] You've said it a lot though. You have to keep reminding us. It's like she's bragging. You don't need to. I think now we believe you. Now I'm starting not to. Wow. Best documentary short. The ABCs of book banning. The Barber of Little Rock. Island in Between.

[00:21:49] The Last Repair Shop. Mm-hmm. Yep. Nay-Nay Wipo. Give me the ABCs of book banning. Yeah, simple ABC 1, 2, 3. I'm going ABCs of book banning. I'm going to go The Last Repair Shop. Yep. It's a good one too. It's a good one too.

[00:22:13] Yeah, I also want ABCs of book banning. Yeah. There you have it. Best documentary feature. Bobby Wine, The People's President. The Eternal Memory. Four Dirters. Tequila Dagger. 20 Days. And Maripole. Four Ditters? Ditters? Ditters. I'm going to go with 20 Days. Yeah.

[00:22:42] 20 Days and Maripole is what I'm going with as well. Oh, it is? It's the only one I've heard of. Really? Tookie. Tookie, right. I have a pen. There's nothing I can do. I think we have too many tigers, so Tequila Tiger would be my choice.

[00:22:58] Tequila Tiger is not about a tiger. Just so you know. The one I'm planning on voting for is about tigers. Now you've put that out there that you think there's too many tigers. This is the one where my heart says Tequila Tiger, but I am going with 20 Days.

[00:23:13] You have it. Best costume design. Bobby. Jaclyn Duran. Killers of the Flower Moon. Jaclyn West? What? Janty Yates and Dave Grossman. Oppenheimer. Ellen Merzenich. Poor Things. Harley Waddington. Yeah. This is hard. It is. I feel like that Barbie is probably going to sweep costume design and production design.

[00:23:45] I went with the upsets for Poor Things and production design. Of course. So I'm going to go Barbie costume design, and then if it's reverse of that, then I'll miss them both. But maybe I'll catch a break there and we'll see. Barbie for costume design.

[00:23:56] I'm tempted to go Killers on this one. I don't know why. I've just got a feeling. A feeling? I've got a feeling about it, so I'm going to go Killers of the Flower Moon. I'm going to go Napoleon. I'm going to go Napoleon. Okay. It's a move.

[00:24:14] I also went Napoleon. Wow! I don't think I'm voting for anywhere else. I thought I'd throw in one. Best cinematography. Sunday, Edward Lachman, Killers of the Flower Moon, Rodrigo Prieto. Prieto. Prieto. Thank you, Dan. No problem. Maestro Matthew Labatecki, Oppenheimer, Hoit Van Houtanme. Poor Things, Robbie Ryan.

[00:24:48] It should come as no surprise to anyone that I'm voting for Oppenheimer here. I'm also... It's not Poor Things. Yeah. Hoit Van Houtanme is just phenomenal. I think that's the easy one. That's why I'm going with it. Are you stuck here, Bran? I'm going to go Killers.

[00:25:14] I'm also voting Killers. With Prieto. There you have it. He's the guy that also was the cinematographer for Barbie. Oh, wow! He finished Killers of the Flower Moon and then Greta Gerg was like, I want Prieto to do this movie and he went right to Barbie.

[00:25:30] A little bit of a different... A little bit. And to see how both of them turned out, that guy is very impressive. Best animated feature, The Boy in the Harem, Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. I'm going Spider-Man. One of my favorite movies of the year.

[00:25:58] I thought that it was stunning visually and I just adored it. Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. Same here, Bran. Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse is one of the five best films I saw this year. The Boy in the Harem is Miyazaki's, almost assuredly his last movie ever.

[00:26:14] The Boy in the Harem is going to win the Oscar. Boy in the Harem. Erin? I went Spider-Man. I love it. Boy in the Harem. Let's take one more quick break. We'll get to the big guns here. Big guns. Untag the Hallmark. Oscar time, fun time. 96th. 4th.

[00:26:40] 8th. 6th. Welcome back. It's time for the wait what part of the earthquake underground episode. Brian. Let's get back to... We're doing our Oscar ballots. We are almost through. We're heading into the big gun category, part of the show. Still a show. Easy for you to get.

[00:27:05] Best supporting actress. Emily Blunt. Oppenheimer. Danielle Brooks. The Color Purple. America Ferrara. Bobby. Jodie Foster. Divine Joy Randolph. The Holdover. Yeah, I'm pretty sure... Is it Divine or Divene? Divene Joy Randolph has won this award in literally every major national awards syndicate. Like all of them.

[00:27:38] All of them. Golden Globe, SAGS, all that stuff. So to vote against her would be crazy. I think all those performances are amazing. But give me Randolph. Yeah, same here. I didn't know all of that. Because of my undying love of The Holdover.

[00:27:53] She was so great in that movie. My heart is with you, but I chose America. That's a great speech. America first. Dan always says... Say what? She did win an award this season for supporting. Oh good. Keep it going.

[00:28:14] The fact that Dan, you didn't go with America when all week you've been talking about America first. Just pumping it up all week. Unbelievable. America Ferrara first. Interesting. I have a question as a callback to Tuesday's episode about Pride and Prejudice. Oh my! I remember that.

[00:28:33] Watch it on FILA. Yeah, so Brand you were upset with Dan for not being upset that America had to wait a few months to get this movie. Yes. But in your justification in this episode, England is not international. It's a part of America still.

[00:28:49] So it premiering in England would still be America first by your justification? That's right. So you've kind of really put yourself in a real... No, no, no. It's like if you compare these episodes, sometimes you're talking out of both sides of your mouth.

[00:29:02] No, I'm talking about how this is an injustice. Don't know what time it is. Thank you for bringing this up. This is actually beautiful. Thank you so much Erin. Of course I believe as I have forever that the UK is not international. We should be included.

[00:29:15] And so the fact that this is why I'm mad. This is why I'm mad. Because we should have gotten it on the same day because we're not. And so then the fact that we did, that's why I was...

[00:29:29] But England is still a part of the UK and you can travel there with no passport. You could have gone there. You could have, of course. Thank you Erin. You made my point for me. Best actress Annette Vening. Niaad. Lily Gladstone. Killers of the Flower Moon. Sandra Hooler.

[00:29:51] Anatomy of the Fall. Carey Mulligan Maestro. Emma Stone. Poor things. I've not seen Niaad. I've not seen it. The other four years before... I don't know anything about it. It's about a swimmer that... I don't like water. Yes, but she's older, right? She was in her 60s.

[00:30:15] And swims the English Channel. The American Channel. I have to go with Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon. You have to. She's won virtually every one of those. She won the Globe, she won the SAG, she won all the major...

[00:30:32] But you know what? Oscars is its own thing. Oscars sometimes a grouch. Sometimes. I would be fine with any of those four. All four of those performances are maybe the best we've seen all year. There probably are my top four of the year. Lily Gladstone.

[00:30:47] It's unfortunate because I was taking this opportunity to go with Poor Things. It sounds like it's a bad choice, but I've already... It's not a bad choice. Emma Stone. She crushes it there. I know, that's why I'm voting for her. Evan?

[00:31:02] As I said earlier, we watched Pride and Prejudice 2005 this week. And with that on my brain, I went Carey Mulligan. Nice. I see how you got there. Best Supporting Actor. Sterling K. Brown. American Fiction. Robert De Niro. Killers of the Flower Moon. No question. Robert Downey Jr. Oppenheimer.

[00:31:27] Ryan Gosling. Bobby. Mark Ruffalo. Poor Things. Is the narrator getting more and more British towards the end of this? I mean, he might be because again, America, England, same thing. That's right, same thing. I'm going to have to...

[00:31:43] The only thing that the Academy loves more than awarding the same movie over and over again is a legacy award. And that's an award for someone that's long overdue for one.

[00:31:53] Like Martin Scorsese finally won Best Director for The Departed, which is not by most people's standards a top three or four Scorsese movie, although it's great. Robert Downey Jr. is great in Oppenheimer, and also he's one of America's best living actors. He just...

[00:32:10] All these performances are great, but give me Robert Downey Jr. Yeah, watching Oppenheimer, I wanted him on the screen the whole movie. He was a standout performance. So easy pick right there. I thought that for what he did, I thought Sterling K. Brown was great.

[00:32:30] I don't think he was in the movie enough to be like, hey, this is a... This is a... should win this award over Downey, who I think is in this movie a lot, obviously. I don't think it's going to go to De Niro. He's De Niro.

[00:32:53] Gosling's not going to win. I'll go Downey Jr. I think you have to. I want to win, but I just think... I don't think it could go to anybody else this year. And Aaron hasn't stopped talking about his performance in Oppenheimer. The movie you totally saw.

[00:33:11] I haven't stopped talking about it. I compare every movie I watch on another podcast called D-Com Descendants. I compare every movie I watch there to Oppenheimer. Very similar, yes. Because of the bomb. It's the bomb. But yeah, I'm going Iron Man. Duh.

[00:33:30] All right, big boys, here we go. Best actor. Bradley Cooper, maestro. Coleman Domingo, Rustin. Paul Giamatti, the Holdovers. Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer. Geoffrey Rint, American Fiction. Gosh, this is so hard. Yeah, it really is. I've got to go with my gut on this one. That's Paul Giamatti.

[00:34:01] I would love it if any of the last three won it. I would love it if Giamatti, Murphy or Rint won it. I'm going to go upset here. Give me Geoffrey Rint, American Fiction. Oh, I just picked Geoffrey Rint.

[00:34:14] I think Cillian Murphy is probably going to win it. But Oppenheimer is not going to sweep. There's going to be one they're not going to win, at least. So I'd love to see Paul Giamatti win. I would say four. I just don't think he will though.

[00:34:28] It's my favorite performance of the year. Yeah, he's changing it. He's doing it. Listen, if you can't go with what you want here, Paul Giamatti is great. I also went with Paul Giamatti. He's so good. This was a hard choice.

[00:34:46] I think Cillian would probably win, but the Holdovers was great. If you didn't see it, what were you doing? Find it, rent it, buy it. Best original screenplay. The Anatomy of a Fall. The Holdovers. Mistro. May, December, June, July. Past Lives.

[00:35:13] All of these movies are excellent and they're so well written. What's May, December? It is the Todd Haynes movie with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore about the woman that marries the dude who's like 20 years younger than her.

[00:35:27] I watched it on the plane on the way back from somewhere we went. Remember New Jersey? Whoever it was. Natalie's playing the actress who's going to be portraying the woman. This is a hard pick for me. I really want the Holdovers to win this category.

[00:35:42] I think it's deserved. Anatomy of a Fall, guys, it is like surgery. It's just so well written. Give me the Holdovers though. I want them to win it. I also voted Holdovers here. I want Holdovers to win as well, but I picked Past Lives.

[00:35:59] It's a good one too. Past Lives is great. I'm going May, December. Good choice. Out of nowhere. I'm going for the win, guys. You can't have all these ties. Best Adopted Screenplay. American Fiction. Bobby Oppenheimer. Paul thinks. The Zone of Interest. So, Barbie shouldn't be in this category.

[00:36:25] It should be Original Screenplay. They made that change and it's so stupid because Oppenheimer is based on American Prometheus, which is such a bear to tackle. Having said that, what is accomplished by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach in Barbie and how they're able to balance as many ideas

[00:36:48] and do what they did in that movie, I think it is more than deserved for them to win Best Adapted, even though it should be Best Original. I would love for the Holdovers in Barbie to both win. That would be awesome.

[00:37:00] But they should be in the same category. Even so, Barbie, Best Adapted Screenplay. I agree with everything you just said. Also going Barbie. I'm going Poor Things. Oh, you are? I haven't picked a Poor Things.

[00:37:14] You should pick Oppenheimer and win one on the field on all of us. Because you'll get a free one there. You think so? How dare you? I want Barbie to win. Well, you're going American Fiction. Yeah, I have American Fiction.

[00:37:28] I've heard great things about the book and the movie. It seems like we are all over Oppenheimer. I just think Oppenheimer is not going to win every award. Even the most successful movie of all time has only won 13 Oscars. So you can't win all of them.

[00:37:44] There's a bunch of them that are up there in that category. Lord of the Rings won double digits. Avatar won a bunch. There's a few of them that have won. I need to look it up. Interesting. Yeah, it's a cool category. A class to be in. Yes.

[00:38:00] Go ahead, narrator. Thank you. Did they record that? Best Director, Anatomy of a Fall, Justine Treat. Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese. Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan. Mamma Mia. It's a spicy meatball. Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos. The Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glaser.

[00:38:38] FYI, Ben-Hur, Lord of the Rings, Return of the King and Titanic have all won 11 Oscars. The most Oscar wins, aside from that, is West Side Story 1961 with Tim. So 11 is the most? 11 is the most. There's more that's not on here, right?

[00:38:58] Correct. Yeah, effects and visual effects and things like that. I feel like if Christopher Nolan doesn't win this, it's a sham. And he might not because typically the Academy does this thing where they don't always... It took him forever to receive a nomination.

[00:39:13] And I don't know how you can even compare what he did versus anyone else in this category. Having said that, I wouldn't be mad if Justine Triette won or Martin Scorsese won. I think both of those directors did a great job. Oppenheimer, Chris Nolan. Same here, obviously.

[00:39:32] Has he won before? He's never won a Best Director. Ever. And his movie has never won a Best Picture. In fact, I think this might be his first... Dunkirk may have been his first nominee or this is his first nominee for Best Director.

[00:39:45] He didn't even get nominated for Dark Knight. Give me Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glaser. I know! I'm out here trying to win, y'all. Not a bad idea. Yeah, I want Oppenheimer. Good move, Bran. Thank you. Well, my thought here was...

[00:40:03] As the Academy says, Zone of Interest is an international film. And so, I'm not going to give him Best Picture, but I'm giving him the nod for the director. He's received one Best Director nom. It is for Dunkirk. And then this is his second one.

[00:40:22] I did see Dunkirk. You did? He was great. And Oppenheimer, for sure. 100%. For sure. Alright, here we go. You ready? Born ready. Best Picture. American fiction. I'm not going to read the production companies. Anatomy of a Fall. Barbie. The Holdovers. Killers of the Flower Moon. Mistral. Oppenheimer.

[00:40:56] Past Lives. Poor Things. The Zone of Interest. Thank you for having me on your show. See you next year. Oppenheimer, my favorite movie of the year. Gotta go with it for Best Picture. Done and done. I gotta go with Earthquake Underground. Only one of us can pick that.

[00:41:19] I know. A movie that is definitely finished and ready for viewers. In time for the Oscars. I'm going Oppenheimer. Man. Erin, do you have a different pick other than Oppenheimer? No, it was my favorite movie of the year. This is tough. Yeah, it's Oppenheimer. Just do it.

[00:41:43] Maybe the voters feel like they need to overcorrect from the fact that they didn't do what was right. If I wasn't going to pick Oppenheimer, I would pick Holdovers just to give them the nod.

[00:41:54] I think this is a situation where they could do the reverse of La La Land. They announced La La Land but Moonlight won. And this time they could very well give the award to Barbie. I think Barbie could win Best Picture.

[00:42:09] To make up for the fact that it is sorely lacking in the nominee department. Boy. Very possible. I know we're all going to be watching together, right gang? Big Oscar party. She went Oppenheimer. You went Oppie. We all went Oppie.

[00:42:27] We're all getting together this Sunday. I made snacks and drinks. Dan is so graciously hosting us. I'm graceful. Your pool's open, right? I think it's a 9pm start. Forget it. If it's 8pm, I'll come over. Come on, man. We'll dress up. Put on your decky stuff.

[00:42:51] I'll come over. Ain't no problem with that. Is Magic playing that night? 6pm top tip. We can talk about it later. We can. Congratulations to Josene, the narrator. Thanks, Joe. Catch you next year. We're going to be back tomorrow. A special double. It's starting at 7pm.

[00:43:13] That's got to be pre-show stuff, right? The actual show can't start that early. It says ABC announced that the Oscars will air... Earlier time slot? My kids won't even be in bed by 7pm. 7pm, this ceremony. I might come over after the kids go down. Very doable.

[00:43:28] I will see you at 7pm. Stuff doesn't really get going until... They always do a best supporting early. Just to get you interested. Then they do nothing for about an hour and a half. We learn from them. No. We're going to be back tomorrow with a special...

[00:43:44] Earthquake underground. We'll be back tomorrow with a special double release. D.com Descendants. You can hear it here, you can hear it there, you can hear it everywhere. I think you're going to like what you hear. If you do, please go subscribe to D.com Descendants
