[00:00:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm Alonso and I love Paul Giamatti Christmas movies that don't feature Vince Vaughn and this
[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Hallmark it's his podcast
[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_00]: And friends host this podcast
[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_00]: We hope you like this jolly podcast
[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not a real i'm not a real film critic. I can say that the fact that Paul Giamatti
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Was featured in Fred Claus makes the holdovers worse. I can say it
[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I just want to be very clear. There are great Paul Giamatti Christmas movies and not so good ones
[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_02]: There's actually even
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_02]: another one
[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_02]: uh
[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_02]: With Paul Rudd and it's mezzo-mezzo at best. Mezzo-mezzo. What's uh, what's that one? It's called all is bright
[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_03]: What's the best Paul Giamatti movie in your mind?
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I gotta go American Splendor. American Splendor's a great movie. Yeah, great movie. Yeah, you know who he's great in the movie's fine
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Cinderella man
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Paul Giamatti is so good in Cinderella man and his first oscar nomination and all every time I watch it
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I forget like he is just immersed and it's just like
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_03]: It's great. He's no
[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_02]: He's one of those guys you see his name in the credits
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_02]: You're like everything else about this movie could be garbage, but Giamatti is gonna deliver. Giamatti's gonna Giamatti. He's gonna
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: It's great to be here sideways
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Great movie. It's of course
[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Great to be here today talking about a little movie called the holdovers. Maybe maybe you missed it
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Is this the first oscar nominee we've done on this show
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Any kind I don't know but best picture nominee I can guarantee you sure and also winner catch me catch me
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Did it get nominated not best picture did it it got nominated for I think it might have just been nominated for
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Christopher walk-in and maybe like the score or something
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I got a look
[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And john williams you nailed it. That's exactly right. He's good man. This guy knows his stuff. He's all right, but best picture nominee
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, this has got to be our first and best supporting actress winner. Yeah, that's right. Buckle up everybody
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna we're gonna have a field day with oh, they don't they don't they're not gonna know what hit them
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_03]: in their 70s
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_03]: People living get out of here. There's no way they drank that much. No, it's not safe. They're not safe cigarettes people didn't smoke
[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_00]: They didn't use seatbelts
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Alonso are you have you come down from the high that was the early schedule? Are you well
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: What a day that was
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_02]: It is it is for me. It is it has become like christmas in terms of it's all about anticipation
[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_02]: You know hallmark gives you that list and it's it is a row of wrapped gifts
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_02]: You don't know if that beautiful paper is hiding something cool or something terrible at this point
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_02]: They're all potentially marvelous. And so we get to live in that space for a while
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Until we start watching them and then the paper comes off and it's like
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Huh, at least the wrapping was nice. Thanks, I guess
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Or flip that where it's like, oh this movie sounds like it sucks
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_03]: And then it turns out it was also true ghost of christmas always situation
[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Which yeah around and round like oh you wrap this in an old grocery bag
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's a treasure and I gotta be honest as someone that hates these movies
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm actually with you here alonzo schedule release day is maybe it's it's up there
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_03]: This side of bramble fest and the big things that we do marathon things like that as far as a regular day in the office
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_03]: the the uh
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_03]: The schedule release day might be my favorite
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_03]: It's it's a fun day since it was just you and I bran and the getting that schedule printing it all out
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_03]: You coming in on your scooter. You heard about the schedule you got on your scooter. You came right over
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, ben savage was an actor. Yeah
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Bran being on vacation in mexico that time
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: That was a classic year but it's fun because you you're kind of scrambling and like for some reason we feel it necessary to print
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Out this like I don't know why we do but it's like where's the printer? We haven't used the printer work
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Like we have to I have to have them in front of me
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure we mentioned it lastly. It's all a blur, but we bought a printer
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah for the release. We're like our printers gone. We gotta go for the schedule release and then that printer doesn't work now
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, so we want a new one for this release. Can someone tell me what's up with printers?
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like what's the deal with printers?
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like so much has evolved and we have gotten so good at so much
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_01]: But no one I feel like has cracked it. Can't everybody has problems with their printers and copiers, man
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Nobody's been like yeah, this is the this one. It never gives me problems. They all give problems
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of how like they talk about how the language of silent cinema
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Would have evolved so much further if sound had come in a couple years later
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_02]: but then suddenly everything had to grind to a halt and like had to
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Lock the camera down because the microphone and all that stuff. I kind of feel like if we hadn't gotten so good at
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_02]: DocuSign and yeah, you know like just
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_02]: A paperless virtual world that maybe printers would have had to try harder
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_02]: But I think we we move past printers so quickly that now printers are just like yeah, whatever
[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_03]: We don't have to try hard at all. That's really really really thoughtful easily the best scene in Babylon, right?
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Where margot robbie's trying to to uh,
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_03]: To do the movie with the sound like oh that yeah in a terrible movie
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_02]: That's the best scene. That is the best scene and it's actually I know exactly what they were referring to in that scene
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, I write about it in my book Hollywood pride. Yeah
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Dorothy Arzner directed an early, uh talkie with uh, clara bowe who had been a huge silent star
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And um, it was her first time doing a talkie. She was very nervous
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_02]: It was hard to get her to like stay on her mark
[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_02]: So they basically rigged up a microphone on a fishing pole and followed her around the set and it was basically the first boom mic ever
[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's what they were referencing in Babylon in that scene with margot robbie and that's Hollywood pride on books shelves
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Everywhere everyone makes a great gift and that assist is from Daniel Thompson
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_01]: You knew it you knew it and he and he brought it. That was really
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, let's talk holdovers shall we do enough to feel good or great. I don't know we'll find out
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Look, wait, what's gonna take forever? Wait, what is just gonna be huge?
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Was just he was desperate for a way I deleted some
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_03]: He said this thing i'm like brandon's not a wait what and he started to argue with me while watching the movie
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_03]: That is well i'm saying it i'm saying it
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_01]: That's great, I just wait just you wait a lot is probably gonna take it before I get I hope he does
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And they all have nothing. Yeah
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I got a type five on urine and it's coming
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Just wait
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Spoiler alert, I saw type five on your
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_01]: They hand out nose plugs and it's that's nice. Yeah, it's a nice feature. Yeah, um, and they're good ones
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, I still have my type five on urine poncho that I bought
[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_01]: for the first three rows
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: absolutely, uh premiered in telluride on uh, august 31st for those that care of 2023 and then october 27th
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: For us here in the united states and it went a little something like this. Uh, the movie kicks off with oh
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Little town
[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Sung by a school's all-boy choir because we're an all-boys school it's cold. It's christmas
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_01]: It's 1970
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_01]: We meet
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_01]: mr. Paul
[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_01]: hunnam
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and uh, he's a teacher
[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh who loves smoking his pint and complaining about how bad his students papers are
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Kids don't like him teachers don't really like him and uh, but he doesn't seem to care
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: He's you know, he's an establishment at this point
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, he gets a call to go into the headmaster's office and get some bad news
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: He has to stay
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_01]: At the school over christmas which he would have done anyways, but he has to watch the holdovers
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god, that's the name of the movie
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Man
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Um the kid those are the kids who aren't gonna go home for christmas
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_01]: There are four boys that are going to be sticking around
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: um
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: five it's about to be five because
[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_01]: uh
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Angus angus tolley is a student that you might call a little bit of a smart butt
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_01]: He'll smart butt
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_01]: um, and he is annoyed that he finds out that he's gonna be held over because
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_01]: That wasn't the plan at all. He had plans but he gets a call from his mom
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: His mom was remarried in july and they've decided that
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Christmas was a good time for their honeymoon
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and um also sticking around uh during christmas is mary who's the school's cafeteria manager and this is the first christmas since her son
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Curtis, uh passed away at war it doesn't take long for mr
[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Hannum to get
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Fed up with these children and their unchecked privilege. He makes them work out
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_01]: He makes them do school work, but it all comes to a screeching halt when one of the parents
[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Of the students show up in a helicopter to take his kids skiing for christmas and they say hey all these kids
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_01]: They're welcome to come with us only if the parents say okay, and they get approval from all of the parents except
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_01]: For acts and so he's stuck there and mr. Hannum is uh stuck with him and he's very upset
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_01]: um
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_01]: But he couldn't be more fed up with this whole situation. So he leaves mr
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Hannum and a bit of a game of cat and mouse having them chase him all over the school
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_01]: He runs into the gym does a flip
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_01]: onto a gymnastic
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Flippy thing, you know the name of it's the
[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Vault the mat the vaults. That's right and uh dislocates his shoulder in the process to protect mr
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Hannum from getting in trouble. He lies to the doctor to make sure that insurance doesn't get involved
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_01]: That's not the way we do things at the school
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_01]: But what can you do they go out to eat that night and they bump into lydia?
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Who's the headmaster's assistant and the chemistry between him and hannum is off the charts and she invites him to
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Their christmas party they end up all going together and everyone is having a good time
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Hannum is talking to lydia. Agnes is kissing a townie and mary
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Was in charge of the music but things go south quickly turns out that lydia's in a relationship
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Mary has an emotional breakdown and agnes's day is uh, but it's angus angus
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_03]: You start to agnes about halfway through. Okay, we'll go with angus
[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh angus, he gets pulled away from his fun kiss day isn't it? Agnes day. Yes, exactly right. Hallelujah
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_01]: um in the midst of
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_01]: a uh
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: heated arguments
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_01]: With hannum, uh, hannum brings up angus's father and angus drops the bomb
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_01]: His dad is dead
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_01]: So he feels bad about this
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_01]: The next morning is christmas morning and hannum wakes up inspired to make sure that it's as good of a christmas as possible
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_01]: He goes and he gets the last tree on the lot and he gives
[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_01]: angus
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_01]: And merry gifts angus requests a field trip to boston for christmas and hannum
[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Reluctantly agrees field trip. That could be nice
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_01]: They drop mary off at her sister's house and they spend the day looking at books going to museums ice skating
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And angus even gets to see hannum lie to a guy that he went to school with. Oh my gosh
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, they're having a great time in boston together. But when they go to a movie
[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_01]: um hannum catches
[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh angus trying to sneak away and he's like, uh, i'm gonna go see my father and he agrees that he will go with him
[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Assuming that they're going to go to the cemetery because his dad's dead. Yeah, but uh, they don't go to a cemetery at all instead
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, his father is alive but lives at a psychiatric hospital and after a disappointing visit he opens up
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_01]: To about how he's afraid that he's going to turn into his father. But hannum actually
[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Comforts him and tells him that he is not his father
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_01]: And so they get back to campus and they all ring in the new year together. They shoot a firework off in the kitchen
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: It's very nice. It is now time for school to start again and everybody comes back
[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Hannum is asked to come to the headmaster's office
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_01]: angus's mother and stepfather are waiting and they tell him that
[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Angus is not allowed to see his father and apparently when he left his father
[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_01]: He gave his father a snow globe which was used
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_01]: To hit one of the workers at the hospital
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, so they are peed right the off and angus's mother and stepfather
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_01]: They are threatening to take him out of the school and put him in military
[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_01]: academy
[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_01]: However hannum lies again
[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And uh tells him that
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And uh
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Tells him that uh, he lies and he says that he convinced him
[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_01]: To go see his father because it was christmas
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Um angus is able to uh stay but hannum is fired
[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Mary leaves him with a notebook to begin writing his monograph a uh, I knew what it was before the movie
[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I knew about monographs. I always talk about
[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Always talk about them, but what can you do?
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Angus goes to tell him. Thank you and hannum tells them that angus is going to be all right
[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_01]: He can do this as he's getting ready to pull out of the campus
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_01]: He stops it takes a swig of the old alcohol
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: The only alcohol in this whole movie actually and uh, he spits it on the road towards the school
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_01]: He's out of there and now my friends was
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: We did it it's not the old alcohol he took the louis the 13th remy
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_03]: from the desk
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_03]: It you know right now a bottle of that is probably worth a hundred thousand dollars
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_03]: He he spits that on the sign. That is very important, but you nailed it, brad. Okay. Thank you
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_03]: It didn't seem like it you felt it. You too. I had to point that out happening here, you know angus deserved better
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Listen agnes deserve better. It's the first best picture i've written a synopsis for okay. It's very pressure filled well done
[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Well done, let's take a quick break we'll come back and we'll break this movie down here on
[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_04]: A little extra long break there. Sometimes you press it. Yeah
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I pushed I put the buttons are sticky. This new is the new board
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_01]: It is uh, we're talking about the holdovers today. Yeah, we are monday, uh christmas movie from 2023
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna break it down the only way we know how
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Dad gum it that's right. We're so h style. That's exactly right
[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna start with our hot take is where we share exactly how we felt about this movie. We do not hold back
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Alonzo, what did you think of the holdovers?
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I do love this movie and I have to say like I do remember the first time I saw it
[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't quite
[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Get it in terms of I think I was expecting something else
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And so it kind of it left me a little like I don't know but I heard
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_02]: So many people that I trusted really raving about it. I thought okay. I need to give this another shot
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm, so glad I did. Uh, I really on the second viewing and this is now like my fourth or fifth
[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I just I think it's so wonderful. Um, i'm a huge fan of alexander payne
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I think this might be the first film that he did not co-write
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is interesting, uh, but it still very much I think fits in his wheelhouse of the kind of stories
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_02]: He tells even though it's not set in nebraska
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_02]: um, and of course I I paul giamatti is like one of my favorite, uh actors of the of the modern day so
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I love to see him get a role that he can really sink his teeth into
[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_02]: uh, and of course dave. I enjoy randolph is just uh,
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Killing it in every scene. Um
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Everybody is like the this movie gets the little details right so much of the granular 1970s stuff
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_02]: The emotional arcs the christmas of it all it's all great
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_02]: It was on my diss list for the it was like it was my one of my top five christmas movies since 1990
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_03]: But do you have you been watching only murders in the building this year?
[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I have is it doesn't dave. I enjoy randolph now feel weird in that show. I don't know
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Her scenes feel weird to me. It feels like
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I look I think she is she's an actor and so she can do all kinds of roles
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like the first thing I saw her in was dolomite is my name. Yeah
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_03]: No, we're just playing something it just feels like now we've got this
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Real big heavy hitter who comes in for like a scene and it just feels like oh my god
[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: That's dave. I like I don't know for me. Yeah, but the show is all heavy hitters. That's true
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Everybody who wanders in only wears the building is like thoroughly enjoyed thoroughly enjoying this season does different
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_03]: It's it's it's thoroughly enjoyed. Sorry. Go ahead
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I love this movie. I thought that this movie was wonderful
[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh dan you and I saw it in the theaters together and it was a very uh, it was a fun time
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a sweet time sweet time. Yeah, it was between friends
[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, uh, if you don't go see the holdovers with your friend, uh in the middle of the day, uh, what's right?
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_03]: What are you doing? Maybe get a job where you can do that? Yeah like
[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_01]: It really literally was a business expense for us to go to like a 12 20
[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Here it is now you're making a you know, our hands are tied that's right
[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I love it and I loved it
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I loved re-watching this the first time i've re-watched it since seeing in the theaters and uh
[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_01]: It's uh, it's great and it did vibes off the hook. Um, i'm obviously not from the 70s
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think I would have liked it. I think uh, I think I would have liked it
[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I you know, there's a lot going on there
[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Look wise I I it looks like a time that would make me feel but you would have not you would have gone countercultural
[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_01]: You would have picked a different style probably probably yeah, but uh, it looks great
[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Obviously all the performances
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Just crush. It's it's an amazing movie. Uh, you laugh a lot you cry
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And you're you're filled with christmas spirit. So great movie. I love it. It's great. They know yeah hard to
[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Undersell hard to oversell how much I enjoy this movie. Um, if it wasn't though
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: If it wasn't for a little movie called oppenheimer would have been my favorite of the year
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_03]: It might be my favorite of the year. I I love this movie
[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I think the mood that it evokes is unbelievable. I think you feel like you are in snowy
[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_03]: 1970 in massachusetts, I think all these characters are so wonderfully portrayed, but I think also
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_03]: You know
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_03]: There's so many fun themes in this movie like all of these people who are holdovers at the school
[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Are all holdovers in life
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Something has waylaid them at a station that they cannot get out of whether it is angus's
[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_03]: parents and and him having a new stepdad that sent him to boarding school or whether it's dave-on-joy randolph's son dying or whether it's
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Paul, giamatti's whole life since he got kicked out of harvard
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, all of these people are stuck their holdovers in life and it's because they can't show anyone a modicum of grace
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_03]: They feel like they've not received and they can't find it in their selves themselves to love themselves
[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_03]: and in turn to love others and
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_03]: That makes this movie a time worth having because when you can get authenticity like that it beats
[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_03]: You know schmaltz every time I know we're in the business and we we kind of trade in
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_03]: The best speech every year at christmas time and I tend to love to give speeches but like at christmas time
[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_03]: We whichever movie has the best dad given the speech about what christmas is about that tends to score points with us and rightfully
[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So i'm not saying that there's anything wrong with that. But when you see
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_03]: The authenticity of feeling in a movie that doesn't give a big speech
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_03]: That at every turn
[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Never lint like never just gives into sentimentality
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_03]: And still shows you that characters are changing. They're progressing. They're loving and they're being authentic
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, come on, and then the christmas of it all
[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Chef's kiss it's amazing one of my favorite christmas movies of all time
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I I love love love this movie and watching it again for the third or fourth time
[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Cemented that even further
[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_01]: It's time for all the feels we're talking about what in this movie gave us feels alonzo anything stick out to you
[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I mean as somebody who was around for the 70s
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And and grew up grew up watching, you know movies, you know of that period they they nailed so much just off the jump
[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_02]: By the way, I think this movie's set in 1971 just to yeah
[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_01]: When the new year's eve hits it says 1971 on the on the ball like when it goes down. Yeah. Okay. All right
[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, cool
[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_02]: but like I mean at the very beginning and I don't even know if this is stuff you guys would catch because it is so
[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Before your time but like the okay. The first thing you see is the r rating on the screen
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_02]: That's how movies used to start movies would start with the mpaa rating up front on the big blue screen
[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_02]: To let you know what you were about to see the fact that neither focus features nor mirror max existed in 1971
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_02]: But they came up with little animated logos for them that are period appropriate. That was great
[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Um, the the the the crackly sound stuff that that's kind of a grindhouse bit
[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, but it it worked there's even a fake copyright 1971
[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Like copyright in the opening credits if you look, yeah
[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_02]: um
[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_02]: And then just the thing of like those long shots of like the wintry campus and the one flute on the soundtrack
[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_02]: That's crazily, uh early 70s. So just all that stuff. I I loved um
[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Mary's scenes mary has so many scenes that are the feels the monologue about her husband and her son dying early
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Her breakdown at the christmas party the scene that she has with her sister later
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_02]: the the the the the scene at the restaurant with the cherries jubilee like just just
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_02]: She's spinning gold here. And uh, and and rightfully so that she won an academy award. I was very excited about that
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Um the use of the swingle singers. I love that's a kind of kitschy christmas music that I really love that
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_02]: It's very sort of late 60s early 70s euro pop flavored it plays over the um
[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_02]: The scene where where angus is running from hunnam in the through the school hallways and one other scene love that
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Um, the actual visit with the father I think is really moving. Um
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and just ultimately the fact that
[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_02]: That that as dan was saying like these characters who are so closed off
[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_02]: That that angus and hunnam like at one point or other in the movie kind of fall on their own swords for the other ones
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Benefit that's really it's really moving and it's the movie bookends those two things really well
[00:23:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and and yeah, I I think
[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_02]: this is this is a real movie level of
[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_02]: emotion where they don't have to hand it to you on a plate the way that
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Hallmark kind of feels the need to do so and it and all the more fulfilling for it
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_01]: um
[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_01]: There's so much. Uh, paul. Giamatti
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, come on, come on
[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh the scene where he's in the in the office and he's telling the parents what's up? It's great
[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Is he it's just so good and he's like just telling
[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Them that their son is amazing. Yeah, and they're like what this is not what we expected. It's great
[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_01]: um
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_01]: and the scene after that like as right before he's about to say
[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_01]: He's about to get into his car and drive off and he just has this moment where he just tells them
[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Like I believe in you and you can do it and there's something powerful about having somebody
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Say that you know to you
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_01]: um
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_01]: When your parents aren't yes, exactly
[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So just a really powerful moment like it wasn't like as many amazing powerful speeches as paul
[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Giamatti gives in this it was just as simply like hey, you can do this
[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's like it wasn't this whole drawn out thing. It was very simple like you can do this
[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh type thing which is very powerful and there's one shot that I love which is uh christmas morning
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_01]: He wakes up and he can't find him and he runs out the doors
[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And then it's close up on him and then it zooms out real fast. I love that. It's a great shot
[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Payne loves the zoom there. He loves it. I love the zoom. Yeah, the zoom hits uh, dano
[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, all that stuff is great. And I there this is a movie that is rich character rich with fun feels I
[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Found myself laughing way harder at this moment than any other it is slightly pg-13
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna read the quote, uh, but paul gets fired and the guy that is the boss
[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_03]: He literally used to be taught by paul and and paul is just like
[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Kind of reveling in being fired and he realizes this is the only way he can move forward is to stop working here
[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And he pulls in this guy close. His name's hardy and he says this
[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Very softly hardy i've known you since you were a boy
[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think I have the requisite experience and insight to avair that you are and always have been
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_03]: penis cancer in human form
[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And I
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Just like I'd forgotten about it somehow and it caught me off guard
[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And I loved it like of all the things that are said in this movie
[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_03]: The way that they're said and how he always paul giamatti always has these very like
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_03]: intellectual retorts
[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Like calling people troglodytes and like all these big words and then he's in latin
[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah latin always he leans in real close to this head of school and he just calls him
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It's great
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_01]: It's fantastic. I also love when that kid is like I cannot fail this class and he's like i'm quite certain you can't quite certain
[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_01]: You can yeah
[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_01]: That's great, uh, i'll say a quick break we'll come back and we'll get to that type five on urine and so much more here
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_01]: On deck the hallmark
[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Honey we're talking the holdovers here on a monday here on deck the hallmark
[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_01]: It's time to the way what is where we talk about what in this best picture nominee made us stop and say wait what?
[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And i'm gonna start with you
[00:27:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Alonso alonso what you got?
[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this this took some work
[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_02]: A couple of things that
[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Are not mine
[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_02]: uh early on we are told that the heat has been turned off in all of the buildings and the faculty housing which is
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Why they're all staying in the infirmary. Yep
[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_02]: um
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But the heat is also on in the church. Yeah
[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Because there is a scene where where angus winds up there and mary comes in and they have a conversation
[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_02]: You can't see their breath. So i'm like, all right, you can't turn the heat off in god's house. Someone's heating this building
[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's uh, it's being uh, heated by at least the holy spirit at the very least. Yes. There we go
[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_02]: That's best I can guess you're right. I take it back. Thank you
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_02]: The so early on there's the scene where angus is talking to two of the other holdover kids who by the way
[00:28:10] [SPEAKER_02]: the casting agent found
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_02]: like
[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_02]: perfect 70s prep school faces
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Like both both the like the coons and the long-haired ski guy
[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Like look exactly like my older siblings yearbooks, you know, like it's I don't know where they found these guys anyway
[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_02]: but he talks about how
[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_02]: How he's on thin ice and if one more thing happens if he gets kicked out of this school
[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_02]: He's gonna get sent to military school and that would be the worst
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_02]: So I don't quite understand
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_02]: the scene where he like runs from hunnam and you know goes into the gym and like
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_02]: it is it is such a
[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's one thing to like grab the keys while hunnam's passed out and sneak around and do stuff
[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_02]: But to do something that's that sort of flagrantly against the rules
[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Seems to me like he doesn't care at that point if he's going to get expelled and and sure the character could be that
[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Cavalier about it, but I would think that the fear of getting sent off to military school might have checked him in that moment
[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know. I think uh, it's a tough one. That's a tough one
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I think maybe high schoolers don't always have the best judgment even uh, also true. Yeah
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I think there might be a moment of of a slight
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Judgments. Yeah. Oh, I forgot. I have one son whom I love dearly. He is my pride and joy who occasionally
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_03]: definitely doesn't comprehend the consequence at the time of the action and then when he gets the consequence
[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_03]: is
[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Beside himself like I can't can't believe it happened. It happened last night
[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_03]: We're supposed to get to watch the sonic 3 trailer
[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, hey
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_03]: we're gonna watch the sonic 3 trailer tonight and he was very excited and then
[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_03]: For some reason he didn't get to watch it and he couldn't he couldn't believe us
[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_03]: So there's that that was fun time to make me think of that
[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_02]: And my only other thing is that really wait what but I I will say one thing about this movie is that uh
[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_02]: At this point using cat stevens's the wind is cheating. So I
[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I told brand I was gonna say this to get you mad, but I was like, what do they only have 10 songs in the 1970s?
[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_02]: We've heard a lot
[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_02]: I think a lot of the needle drops are like is it the swingles and singers?
[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_02]: These are like deeper cuts, but the wind yeah ever since harold and maude that is just that
[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_02]: If you're doing a movie, especially a movie set in the early 70s
[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_02]: And you want the audience to start feeling things you just throw that baby on and stand back. That's right
[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I think it's cheating. I think yeah, remember the titans did it so, you know
[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_03]: It's in good company case in point
[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Um y'all ready for this no dude buckle up ready for this. All right. All right. Let's have it. Here we go
[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't believe you're doing this. When was the last time you peed the bed? Uh, let's start with that
[00:30:53] [SPEAKER_01]: When was the last time you peed the bed? I was probably five or six years old
[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_01]: So it might have been a while. Yeah, you know, but for those of us that have maybe done it more recently
[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_01]: What are you talking? I don't know you you would know that
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_01]: It's tough to avoid the urine
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_01]: But he he still gives this poor this poor kid pees the bed and he's crying and he's like I don't you know
[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Don't don't get up. Don't do anything. The other kids are gonna beat you up. They're gonna crucify you
[00:31:18] [SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna give you a hard time. All right, his words. He says they're gonna crucify. I know um
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_01]: And uh, he just says roll over find a dry find a dry spot. We'll deal with it in the morning
[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, first of all
[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna it's gonna smell in the morning. So they're gonna
[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Asparagus has been consumed. I know they're gonna figure it out whether it's now
[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you have a better chance if you deal with it now, you could be quiet
[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_01]: You can sneak around but two good luck five, you know where there's not a dry spot your pants your your pants
[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's
[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Very small cot as well. It is. Thank you. Alonzo. You get it dance. This is a bad way
[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_00]: He's giving this kid bad advice fine
[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Good luck, I get a good luck. He's trying to give him the best opportunity to not get bullied any further
[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Situation
[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And obviously not a great solution, but in the mind of these two
[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Kids, this is the closest they can get to guaranteeing. He doesn't get bullied
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: That's why I think it shows that whether that night you deal with a p situation
[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_01]: No, you deal with the p situation that night it's going to smell worse in the morning and you can't find a dry spot you can
[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_01]: You can take a sheet go get rid of it and get back to bed without waking anybody else. You absolutely can
[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_02]: That's also even if the heat is on at the uh at the infirmary. I bet it's cold in there
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just gonna get colder if it's uh, damn alonzo. What do you think good way? What?
[00:32:48] I
[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a it's a fair question. It is a fair question to ask. Thank you. That was all I needed
[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_03]: That was a perfect response. Thank you. Dana. I have two one. I stand by the other one is maybe a stretch. Uh
[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Is it at the first one of the first scenes in this movie paul hunnam?
[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, there's a knock on the door where he lives
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_03]: It is lydia crane who is giving him a plate of christmas cookies and he seems very put off by the fact that he has christmas
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_03]: cookies we know
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_03]: That over seven days later he presents those christmas cookies
[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_03]: To everyone at the table and they look the exact same as they did when she handed them
[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_03]: How many preservatives are in these christmas cookies uncovered? I wouldn't touch them
[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_02]: that uh, it's the 70s dan brought all the preservatives it is just
[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Uncanny that these christmas cookies. It looks like they just filmed that it looks like they came from the scene
[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_03]: They just filmed before it it is crazy
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_03]: That this and there it's i'm seven is being generous. It's probably they're the cookies are probably 10 days old
[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, bake some christmas cookies. No, I don't I don't think it's I think it's been like four. No, no
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_03]: There's it literally says she hands them the uh, the cookies when they're still at school alonzo the last day of school
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we see day six when the chopper picks up the kids
[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_03]: That's day six december 22nd. So by the time he gets the cookies get in here rig
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_03]: rig
[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm great. It's been years since i've been on this program
[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I saw your when dan said chopper. I saw your ears per i'm in the middle
[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm in the middle of brand said my pants
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_03]: It's vest season and i'm in the middle of it and you you got me out of there
[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_03]: But I know puppy vests vest for for sue all kinds of best the vest season is popping
[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_03]: You didn't even come by I sent you an invite. I know you sent me an invite
[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I gave your vested option when dan when dan said chopper your ears perked up any particular reason
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, there is a chopper in this movie. It flies very close to the school and everybody has to get on board and
[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_03]: It reminds me of my boy arnie
[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Arnie, yeah, you know arnie. Who's arnie arnie schwarzenegger?
[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_02]: They got the terminator. Have you heard of the terminator predator? Have you heard of the terminator?
[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you have to jog. Have you heard the true lies? Maybe you could jog. Have you heard of the kindergarten cop?
[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe you could drag my memory ready close your eyes close your eyes and close your eyes. It's gonna sound you're not gonna believe
[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Boy socks off you ready for this i'm gonna get back to vest ready
[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Get to the chopper
[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Wow
[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Identical amazing I got chills. Yeah, we all did. I know we had him. We I know we had arnie
[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_03]: We all we all got it. No, we had arnie. Yeah, that was rig. That was I know that's crazy, right? Wow
[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, rig. Love you buddy. Love you. Happy vest season. Happy best season
[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, so we know that it's been at least seven days that is the minimum time
[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_03]: It's been since cookies have been presented to paul hunnam from time. He presents them at the table
[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the minimum amount it could be
[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Those cookies look the exact same
[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Come on, come on everybody. Did you put him in the freezer? What'd you do?
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_02]: What'd you do if they were sitting in his unheated room? I guess they've been kept cool
[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I got I got a double digit. Uh rule for cookies
[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I I would I would still you have a double digit. Of course you do I would give you threw up after 27
[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_03]: so you
[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I should have clarified I have a double digit
[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_03]: A double day rule. Yeah, don't ask him to eat 55 because he can't I can't do it. Can't do that. We found out
[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we found out half that maybe just because you say you will does it mean you can that's right?
[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_03]: You cook it around and you found out trying to cook it around
[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then the other one and this is definitely a stretch but angus says i've never had a home cooked meal for thanksgiving or for
[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_03]: christmas
[00:36:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Traditionally my mom orders basically take out uh from delmonico's with all the fixings
[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Delmonico sounds like an italian restaurant to me. That's open on the day of the birth of our lord and savior. Jesus
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Delmonico's is a very fancy new york steak place from back in the day
[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and it would have been open on christmas day you think yeah, okay. Great. It's all I need so stupid so dumb
[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god
[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I bet you wrote down that I wish that you wish you did brought it
[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, it's time for uh, what the hallmark is where we wonder what could have been maybe having us a clear any questions that we
[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_01]: still have
[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Alonzo, what are you still wondering about?
[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Um, you know, it is a testament to how much I love this movie that I would be game to see a sequel
[00:37:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Uh where we find out how they're doing in the 80s or the 90s, you know
[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And and I think with the same attention to period detail, but to a later
[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_02]: um decade and I think these characters are rich enough that I I want to know I know it's kind of a non-answer but
[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Like the movie doesn't leave me
[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it it it perfectly like closes its own loop
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_02]: But at the same time it's it's so well put together
[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and I love these three characters so much that I would be I would not be averse to
[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Like touching base with them later and just sort of seeing how things are. I love the idea of a very old
[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Cranky Paul Giamatti who they come they come and visit. I think that would be fun
[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that's a fun a fun fun bit. I would be down for that for sure
[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe uh, Angus is the new uh, eventually comes back and he's a he's the teacher
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. I'm just brainstorming here. He's just a teacher
[00:38:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And then he like, you know
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_01]: asks
[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Or maybe just like add it like hey, I gotta stick around at Christmas room when we did that
[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_01]: How about you come and you help me and I don't know but Tom Fullery, Tom Fullery. Yeah
[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, I have one of mine is just they say that Angus Angus says he was wrongly accused of blowing up a toilet and i'd love
[00:38:30] [SPEAKER_03]: to hear that
[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Story, I think we missed an opportunity for that story
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I think the other one I have is wrongly accused
[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_03]: They there is definitely a shift in character for Paul Giamatti during the holdover season of this movie
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_03]: But when he gets back to class
[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_03]: He has a more positive demeanor, but still seems to be the same
[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Like we're still gonna take this exam again, you're still gonna have a pop quiz
[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_03]: You're still gonna he's still the same guy and I appreciate the fact that he didn't show up and have them all sit in a reader
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Circle until their feelings like I I appreciate that but I want to know
[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_03]: He's not like starting my kindness club. We yes, exactly
[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But also he then he gets fired so I will never know the answer to this
[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_03]: But I would love to know how it would have changed
[00:39:13] [SPEAKER_03]: On a day-to-day basis if you have forgiven yourself and you realize that people need
[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, you know some sentiment or some like just little
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_03]: modicum of grace in their life how that would change how you teach
[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_03]: On a day-to-day like how that changes how you teach and because it's important
[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I think every teacher either learns
[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_03]: how to become more rigid because it's necessary or how to become more gracious because it's necessary and I
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I would actually be interested in how that would occur. Unfortunately, that's not the direction that the movie
[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Ends up taking and that's fine. I think the movie's direction is better
[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_03]: But if he would have stayed that's what I would have or you get out. Yeah, or you get out. I don't know
[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not talking about anyone talking about anyone here, but maybe you get out but you get out you get out
[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not for everybody. It's not for everybody
[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, we did everybody congratulations. We're back next monday with another
[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Christmas movie from years past. Uh, we're going to 2012 for rise of the guardians
[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, i've never seen it rise of the guardians that little little jack frost action, right?
[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I think there's like an easter bunny. I feel like his guardians
[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Once a year from a random person that they freaking love this movie and that's all I ever hear about it
[00:40:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And i've never seen the problem with this movie and why I often forget about it because it's I don't feel like it's a good title
[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it sounds like
[00:40:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Something like they're about to go
[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_02]: You know or the owls of gahooli or something
[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I mistake it for the zack snyder thing that whatever that was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but we're gonna review it nonetheless title be be darned
[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll be damned that is not a cuss word brand
[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_01]: All right. How about you go down to shoots creek? Okay, you have yourself a party with being a darn. Yeah, that's what I mean
