[00:00:01] Hi, I'm Bram and I love The Way Home. Hi, I'm Ryan. It's getting a little dicey, but I like The Way Home. I'm Dan and I despise The Way Home. And this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast. Deck The Hallmark, it's his podcast. Dan Frentz hosts his podcast.

[00:00:25] We hope you like this jolly podcast. Wow. Hello, everybody. Welcome back to another episode of Deck The Hallmark, Wednesday edition covering something and I know this is crazy this week, but covering something that came out this this year. Wow. Oh, wow. That's new for us this week.

[00:00:49] I know it's a new thing. And don't get used to it. Don't get used to it. No, because tomorrow we are. No, that came out last year. Everything we did for Thursday came out last year. Also, these episodes, which I always enjoy seeing Ryan Ryguy, how you doing?

[00:01:02] Gotcha. Great. Great. How are you? You're always thank you. Thank you. They were more fun when I think the the show was better, because I feel like we had a wave of positivity in listeners that that joined us.

[00:01:15] And we you know, we were standing on the shoulders of giants right now. We're just trying to scrap to stay above water. We're just we're just over here. The pond's taken us. That's right. And we don't like where it's taken us. No, no, no, no.

[00:01:26] We don't like it. The pond takes you where you need to go. And sometimes you get there and you're like, oh, we're here now. We're here now. That's where we are. But before we get into that episode six of season two, Ryan, how are you?

[00:01:41] I'm doing well. I just now I sorry if I was a little distracted during the open. I just got a heck of a deal on eBay. This is not a bit I've been I've been I am this VHS Blu-ray player combo Panasonic Panasonic. You just Blu-ray. Right.

[00:01:55] Yeah. VHS DVD. Very common. Right. Of course. We're coming. Yeah. But Panasonic made right when Blu-ray was getting big. Very hard to find. Usually these things go for like three 80 or up on eBay. This guy just discounted his the 250 and I can offer him down from there.

[00:02:10] So, Ryan, we got to have a talk, buddy. I first of all, 250, that's a quarter of a thousand dollars. First of all, so I can get him down, Dan. OK, get him down. You can get him down from his discounted price. Yeah, I think. Yeah.

[00:02:26] I mean, guys, we've talked about this before. Of course. I know. We'll do this right here. What what's your top dog? What do you need this for? For the power of VHS, he won last season. It's like this is good story continuity

[00:02:39] and yet another thing that we talked about last year. So it fits the theme of the week. But no, like there's there's so many times where I have to like hook up the VHS player in the living room and it's a hassle.

[00:02:50] So many times. And we call that a VCR. That's what we call it. We've called it that for years. So VHS player. It's Danit 2024. Maybe not everybody knows these things. Just trying to make it. This would save so much time.

[00:03:03] It would just be a I would own this for the rest of my life. Well, I would like to. I mean, it was just cheap. Now that you say like that really quickly, I would like for you to and feel free to guess liberally here.

[00:03:17] But how much time do you think you'll save over the course of a year if you have this? And again, you can just think about it. Yeah. Yeah. For for anyone not watching on file, I'm currently doing the math in my head at least at least 45 minutes.

[00:03:35] 45 minutes. Time is money. No, you can get and this is just really quick to 45 minutes of Ryan's time is less than two hours. Hopefully I live to be 100. That would be 67 more years. Think about that. Yeah, it's a lot of time.

[00:03:51] And that means, you know, that's 40, you know, 40 some hours. Here's the thing, Ryan. I don't want to get in the weeds, but we are well in them. I can't see the. So we're there. Yeah. The VCR has standard AV cables. A Blu-ray player has an HDMI.

[00:04:07] Why do you need to keep unplugging and replugging? Why can't you just put the VCR on top of the. It changed the input. It doesn't fit. Things a beast. The V. I have a very reliable VCR DVD combo player. It's too big. It can't fit under the TV.

[00:04:24] It doesn't fit anywhere. So this would this would become I've already cleared it with the boss that being Alyssa, we would find a dedicated spot for this thing. It's nice. What must it be like to be Alyssa? Look at this. Look at where's the camera?

[00:04:37] Look at this thing. It's sleek. It's nice. Before you buy that. I have a of a VHS HD DVD combo player. That's that's a museum or that thing that you should get your hands on. I just it's not a court thing. I just want to be.

[00:04:54] Yeah, what are you talking about? Just be honest. This is a space in the setup thing. It's not a cords thing. The cords are. You could have to both running. So it doesn't have anything to do with the time. That's what I'm trying to say.

[00:05:07] It's time is inconsequential. I see what you're saying. Maybe maybe I was a bit contradictory, but no, it's still because I have to currently set the one. I have to set the VCR DVD up. This would just be a part of our display.

[00:05:20] So this is here's the thing, is that 40 hours to sweet, sweet 40 hours? He's going to save over the next 67 years of his life. Well, hopefully longer. I don't know. There's a hundred. He's trying to go to 100. OK, that now is actually not what we're doing.

[00:05:37] But really quickly, and can you I don't know. Are you home right now? No, I'm not. I'm not at home. No, no. I would like maybe perhaps you could do this for us maybe next week or something.

[00:05:48] Could you bring because I'm having a hard time visualizing the space and how this is an impossible feat. So if you could somehow give us some sort of visual helping us understand the real hurdle here, because I think I speak for most of America right now where

[00:06:11] I just don't I don't quite get. I am having a hard time seeing how this would really change the game for you. Is chat with me? I'm not on Facebook. Is chat with you with chat is as bored as I would imagine some of them.

[00:06:25] There's like two people in the chat. They do say your eBay escapades are more exciting than the way home. He's like, OK, yeah, yeah, that's fair. But hey, that's not a super big brag. And while I'm unmuted, I would just like to ask Dan,

[00:06:39] what is the bidding starting at for your DVD player? I don't actually have one. It was an HD DVD. I was doing a bit that he was got Blu-ray HD DVD was the competing. I know what an HD.

[00:06:52] OK, I don't if I had one of those, that would be like literally I don't know if they ever made one that would be worth thousands. Yeah, I did. Let's talk offline. Let's talk. What's the quality difference between DVD to HD DVD to Blu-ray?

[00:07:08] No Blu-ray and HD DVD are the same thing. The same thing. Different companies. It's just a bad name. The bad over the market. It was yes. It's so Blu-ray one out. HD DVD kicked it up the road. Yes, yes. Got it. So now it's yeah.

[00:07:22] And now you have four K discs, although most people just stream. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. What's what again? How how often are you trying to watch something on your VHS good about that? You couldn't stream like once a week. What are we talking? Not not once a week.

[00:07:42] That'd be ridiculous. So I want some on like, you know, like he's going to say 45 minutes. Give us the most recent. What's the most recent thing you watched on VHS? Well, we're not too far away from from Christmas.

[00:07:53] So like anything like I've told you, like I have an original viewing of Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas with original commercials like, you know, some of those things you can't you can't. And like if I want to watch like the Disney Very Merry Christmas

[00:08:04] singalong special, I don't get the original previews if I watch it on streaming, you know, things like that. I get that. Yeah. Dan doesn't get it. Brand gets it. I do get it. I mean, I feel like they're just as good if you stream them.

[00:08:15] But, you know, whatever. It's just it's different. It's a different experience. Like I would love to just see Alissa's reaction as Ryan comes to her and is like, hey, so I'm bidding on this VHS Blu-ray combo, our current setup is just not going to say what's your most.

[00:08:32] How are you going to go for this? How high are you on the 250? I mean, that's the best deal I've ever seen for this thing. So it's free shipping, too. So like if I could get it down to two to twenty five, even like I put the bid

[00:08:44] in right now, this guy's buying. I know I got to think. I mean, like I don't I just spent I was I was a pretty expensive weekend with some we had to we had to do some finance stuff for like like actual things we need for the apartment.

[00:08:55] So can we do all of your but you and Alissa's budgets? You know, there was a moment because I've been asking about this since we moved in, which was literally silence. The science is Alissa and Ryan go silent when she talks about like this next thing

[00:09:11] they have to buy, like a new AC unit. And he just he stands up and he's like, I want the VHS. And he walks out. It was kind of like that. I said like I said, hey, what day, babe?

[00:09:20] But like three seventy five for the VHS Blu-ray player be ridiculous. And she goes, it's not that it'd be ridiculous, just that we really need like a dining room table. Here's the thing, man. Here's the thing. I pray.

[00:09:32] Very rarely, very rarely do I get into finances with anyone, anyone. Who am I? But typically, you know, I would be like, yeah, if you you know, whenever the time comes to join bank accounts, you know, do whatever feels good.

[00:09:50] I would say for you guys, maybe, oh, maybe, maybe you just have you have your weird eBay account. Yeah. Yeah. I want to tell you, this is all sincerity. Not that I think anybody cares or believes me. I've been very good this year.

[00:10:06] I have bought we moved in. The rent is higher. We're not saying that on a February, Ryan. There's ten months left of paraphernalia out there for you to buy. And we could go through my eBay and other histories from last year at this time.

[00:10:18] And it was not how it looked this year. And so when I'm when I'm asking to see Joey Fatone and AJ McLean in March and asking to buy VHS Blu-ray combos, I think it carries a little more weight. I just want to be clear.

[00:10:30] I believe it's 66 days out of 365. My man is a sixth through the year, and he's bragging on how good he's been from an eBay purchasing standpoint. Loosen my arms, you know? So listen, the short version is he's fine. You don't have to wait till next week.

[00:10:49] What are you waiting on? He's well, how about this? How about this? I'm going to put an offer for one seventy five right now. I like that. It's good. Yeah, so I like that's a steal. They're giving it away at one hundred and seventy five dollars.

[00:11:03] All right. Let's see here. Yep. Yep. One's a big deliver between March 7th and March 9th with with tax. One eighty six under two hundred. Yeah, let's just let you know. I mean, what would it help to if he's checking the reviews?

[00:11:16] But Ryan, would it help you to know that I owe you money? Oh, you do. Yes, I do. Our business owes you money for the. All right, I do this for cash. That's right. So so you you

[00:11:31] you actually can't afford the full bid with what we owe you. Oh man, I almost for the first time ever on here. Or or or or you could put it towards the dining room table. Well, that's already bought and paid for. Come on. Come on. Don't be ridiculous.

[00:11:47] This guy's got a ninety nine point four. I know we have to get to the recap. So I'm going to put in a bid. You know, I'm going to do one seventy one seventy, which would come out to internet. Don't fail us here.

[00:11:59] One eight. Oh, one eighty eighty. Come on. That just sings the offers. We'll see what happens. The dining room table is a Fraggle Rock dining room table. They used it on the set of Fraggle Rock. It is you keep us posted on that.

[00:12:12] I have a Fraggle Rock VHS, mind you. So you don't. I do. Yeah, I got it at a at a thrift store last year. How about that? Man, I love you so much. You're wonderful. I mean, OK, we are 12 minutes and the way. Oh boy. The way home.

[00:12:30] Good. You're welcome. Season two, episode six. How to save a life. Step one. Yeah. You say we need to talk. I say, Sam, just to talk. It's my you smile politely. That is what I stare politely right on through.

[00:12:53] There's some sort of window to the right over here. All right. A marker for years. Hey, you think everybody think we're kid? We've performed that on stage live in front of people for the fans that gave us a pretty big ovation.

[00:13:12] March 3rd, twenty twenty four is when the episode aired and it would have been something like this. It is 1814. Kat a little trip. Susanna, Elijah. They're freaking out because Jacob just got taken. We take a take. Special skills. What is it? What's your specialty? You're taking.

[00:13:32] OK, no one asks him. No, no, no one says like, can you list the skills list of jujitsu karate? Oh, my God. You say one more time. All of them know just the last crowd. My God. Oh, man. Oh, we hated the episode, guys.

[00:13:56] Just so you know, Kat is Kat is peed right the off at Microsoft Office. The entire suite PowerPoint, especially Excel Panama. When is that going to come in handy? You never know. Kat's peed right the off at Thomas,

[00:14:16] because, you know, it feels like it's his fault and he's like, hey, I think I knew where they took him. So keep that in mind when you're mad at me on the way down. He informs them that Thomas informs them and reveals. Here we go.

[00:14:33] On the way down, he informs them that he had Jacob steal some rum. Rum, rum from his own illegal rum shipment. I believe they get word that they get to the jail where they think that he is. Jacob's nowhere to be found. Worried that he may have been

[00:14:57] a special set of skills. She decides that she's going to head back home and look through the execution letter ledger. Easy for you to say. I've heard it both ways, to be fair. Execute. Thank you. The execution. Cousin letter.

[00:15:12] The execution ledger that they have on hand at the Herald's, you know, as one does, as one does. Dell gets a call saying that they found a body. It's possible that it's Jacob's. They'll be in touch. She tells Alice that this isn't the first time this has happened.

[00:15:31] Are you drunk? But that doesn't stop. But that doesn't stop Alice from getting anxious and running to Elliot's house and asking him to please tell Dell that it couldn't possibly be Jacob because mom's been time traveling. And he's like, I mean, technically it is possible because I don't.

[00:15:48] Again, I don't want to get in the weeds here, but Cat hasn't actually found him. VHS DVD combo. Cat text Alice. I tell her that she is back. His name is not in the ledger. She's looking back over the pictures. Amen.

[00:16:05] She's looking back over the pictures, the Polaroid, shake it and recognizes this key in one of the pictures. The emblem on the key is the same emblem for the Goodwin family seal. She believes that it must have been good when who their family. So, yeah, don't worry.

[00:16:26] I've got more on that later. That must be clapping. The seal clapping Goodwin, who is holding Jacob captive. So she heads back to 1814 and tells Susanna, oh, Susanna and Thomas for theory, and Thomas agrees that that's the most logical thing. And she's like, shut the F up, Tommy.

[00:16:46] Dell is very stressed. And so when Sam comes over and offers to have a glass of wine with her, she says yes, fully clothed. Back in 1814, Thomas tells Susanna and Cat that he'll need time at the Goodwin estate to find Jacob.

[00:17:04] We find out that Susanna and Goodwin apparently used to be a thing. So maybe that's why he captured Jacob. They come up with a rescue plan. Step one, we say we need to drug his men and make them fall asleep to Susanna.

[00:17:23] Will she kind of show up, start doing flirty, flirty, fun time with Goodwin? Three cat will find Jacob using the key that she has. Thomas says that if Cyrus's men find a stranger, hey, killer, kill right away. And so she comes up with a plan.

[00:17:42] Thanks to Susanna's wide array of wigs that I could wear one of these wigs and then look like Susanna. Yes, of course. Susanna has a Susanna wig. Susanna has several Susanna wigs. You never know. While Cat is there, Elliot and Alice are working on finishing

[00:18:02] the Founders Day edition of The Herald. Alice finds an old article about the house, you know, the house with the picture and all that stuff. That house apparently got turned over by some teens, a bunch of rambunctious teenagers. She questions Elliot about this, and he's weird.

[00:18:22] And so she tucks that article away for a later date. So the plan in 1814 is underway. They get everybody drinking the rum, including Goodwin unexpectedly. And so that allows Cat and Susanna to go through the underground tunnel.

[00:18:40] But apparently the drug, the Jimson weed is what I wrote down. I don't Jimson. Yes, that's correct. Thank you. It's not, quote unquote, entirely dependable. And so Goodwin, one of the episode, when wakes up and finds Cat and Susanna down there. But he's tripping balls.

[00:18:59] And so he's like, there's two of you, which they do that thing like in horror movies where they're like, it makes you feel like you're like a horse. No, no. So much. They all kids. No brother. Jim. So it's weird. I know. So Jake and Ray.

[00:19:22] Yeah, it's very weird. I'm very I don't want to keep. So anyway, it freaks him out. He's like, you're a witch. They call him what? J.R., I believe is what he said. Oh, both of you guys. And they call it. Yes.

[00:19:40] OK, J.R. You wouldn't get it. I wouldn't, though. I do get it anyway. So they freak him out. He's going nuts. He's like, what's happening? And at one point, Kat kind of goes off in her own direction,

[00:19:57] finds one door that is locked, uses the key, opens it up, finds a beat up Jacob on the ground. Obviously, he is to beat up to talk or confirm that he's Jacob. Yes. Yes. Yeah. So Thomas and Susanna show up and they're like, yo, that's him.

[00:20:17] This is amazing. What are we going to do? Because everybody's starting to come to they're going to start coming out for you. Blah, blah, blah. And so Kat comes up with a plan, which is to run through the woods.

[00:20:31] And they're like, hey, girl, like they're going to kill you. And she's like, no, I have a secret hiding spot. We do find out that the body of the kid that they found that Dell was holding out hope would be Jacob

[00:20:44] just so that she could have some closure. Not you did a little thing with your nose like we know something that we don't know. I don't know. OK, so Kat takes off running. She's running through the woods. This is where we get the notorious white witch scene

[00:20:59] where everyone's yelling, hey, witch, hey, witch. And she runs and Thomas is joining the men in this charge because he's kind of like acting like he's going after, but he's pushing them over every once in a while doing one of those things. And she jumps in the water.

[00:21:15] Obviously, the pond takes her and Thomas is like, whoa, maybe she is a witch. And that, my friends, was the way home season two episode six. How to save a life. Wow. Let's take a quick break.

[00:21:30] We'll come back. We'll break this episode down here on Deck the Hallmark. Welcome back, everybody. We're talking about the way home season two, episode six, how to save a life. Let's break it down. Episode six, obviously, last year, last year, if you recall, if we break it down,

[00:21:58] if you recall, last year, episode six was a quite the turning point for the season. It was a big episode. Yeah. Huge episode. Let's find out what episode six of season two has in store for us. What did we like? Did we not?

[00:22:11] We're going to start with a hot take and we're going to go over to my favorite eBay assassin. Oh, that's right. How do you know? Ryan, what do you think about season two episode six?

[00:22:23] How to save a life might have also been a turning point for this season. Just not in the way we were. So, yeah, I don't know how we got here. I'm going to stray away from my notes for a second, because, Brian,

[00:22:36] while you were doing the recap, like, you know, you're mentioning like the family crest and everything. And I just man, listen, I'm a dopey talk show host, right? It's like I'm not I've never worked in television writing.

[00:22:48] I mean, I was you know, that was a dream once upon a time. I just don't ever think it's a good idea for like the the the the crux of our season to be about like a thing, a little thing on a key.

[00:23:01] Like, you know, like let's look at somebody's belt buckle. And like this is like the thing that we care about. Mo, it's just all very convoluted. I think there's a difference between complicated storytelling, like lost complicated storytelling. Right.

[00:23:16] Even a show like this is us, not even like fantasy storytelling, complicated storytelling, but like works for the larger sum. This show has just become convoluted. It's a it's a convoluted show to follow. I'm rooting for the majority of the runtime about them

[00:23:32] retroactively taking back everything they did last week. It's like I'm like, like, Dan, you just kind of said it's like, I really hope that's not Jacob. And the fact that he hasn't woken up yet to tell us that it's not Jacob is like,

[00:23:43] OK, maybe we can like reset and regress to the mean. But like that means I'm spending 42 minutes of a television show hoping that they backtrack on the stuff they established the week before, just so that 42, 84 minutes from now, maybe we can slowly start to get back on track.

[00:24:01] I just don't think that's where you want to be on the whole. I thought the final few minutes were interesting and led to some interesting possibility. But that's a few minutes out of 42. And now a few minutes out of three episodes that I just haven't thought

[00:24:15] was very good. I love season one. I really like the first few episodes of season two. I'm not there. I'm lying if I say I like the show at the beginning of the episode right now. Oh, scathing words. A indictment. I hear you. I feel you. I understand.

[00:24:34] Yeah, it's frustrating. This episode was frustrating for me because I I don't like it when things happen because they're convenient. When things kind of move along based off of a convenient thing that happens, such as the key, such as the wigs.

[00:24:55] I just all just like, oh, that's nice that that happened to help move the thing along. And they had like this promise of White Witch in season one, and it felt like, hey, we're finally going to do the reveal.

[00:25:10] And the reveal felt convenient the way in which it all kind of came together. Yeah, I like this show more when it's in present day and when it was in 1999 last season. I could do with less of 1814. We got a lot of it.

[00:25:29] And I'm ready for that story. It feels insane to say, but I'm just ready for this storyline to be to be done. I think there are still I'm still holding out hope, obviously, for the show. I think that there's enough characters and enough meat there

[00:25:47] that they've kind of teased even last season and some this season that I think could still be fun storylines to pursue that I would personally find much more interesting than this current storyline in 1814. But yeah, it's just kind of an OK for me.

[00:26:07] Didn't I didn't hate it, but I'm just not as excited about the show as I was last season, which is disappointing. Dan, I'll say it. This is the worst episode of the series. Wow. And there's a number of reasons why most of them have already been touched on.

[00:26:23] Complex characters, good convoluted storyline that feels like you're making it up as it goes along. Bad white witch reveal just seemed to be really, really lazy. But this is the worst ending to an episode we've ever had. It is the first time that this show finds itself trapped

[00:26:42] within the bootstrap paradox with this dumb key. Jacob finds the key because Kat left it. Why'd Kat leave it? Because Jacob found it. You can't do that. You can't do that thing where they did it because they did it. But that is not good television.

[00:27:00] OK, you've already established that we can't change things. And now you're in a situation where the big reveal is is that Jacob only found the key and put it in his seashell collection because Kat dropped it.

[00:27:12] Well, Kat only found it because he put it in a seashell collection. They don't know what they're doing right now. But that's that. But that happened like even if you think about obviously, this is a tangible thing that she is finding.

[00:27:24] But like even her dad dying happens because she's going back. It's it's that same thing, though. Two different things. OK, one of those is a very specific MacGuffin or whatever. It's a device that you're using an actual thing. The dad dying thing could vary.

[00:27:42] Like we know all along he was in a car accident. So her being there for that car accident and causing it was all a part of the plan. Right. Whereas the only way she can find that key in his stuff

[00:28:00] is if he puts it there, the only way he can put it there is if she drops it. That is a that is a much more of a of a of a inconsistency than I know. My dad died from a car accident and I went back in time.

[00:28:15] I happen to be a part of it. I think one of those connects a line and makes them this like makes a line continuous. The other one gets you caught in a loop or one of them had to happen first.

[00:28:25] But it can't happen first because then the other one would never have happened. I that's the way I understand it. But you are right. They go back in time and try to change things. And inadvertently, they're a part of the story. Without that, without knowing the thing.

[00:28:40] Yeah. You don't go back in time and try to stop the thing. Going back in time and trying to stop the thing you caused the thing. Yes. An event which could have happened a number of different ways versus a singer. So I get that.

[00:28:52] The other problem here is, is that we I think they have overestimated how much we care about this back story. I think the problem is, is they kind of went all in on Jacob. And we are still hoping against hope.

[00:29:04] This dude has given interviews saying he is Jacob, the Jacob Lane. I read an interview, which I don't typically do. But and I've just got to be honest. I hope they told him the lie.

[00:29:14] I hope they told him the lie, because if that dude who they have found now three or four different reasons for Kat to not talk to him and they all just are just a grab bag of bad reasons. If that guy is her brother.

[00:29:31] This is one of the worst like reveals of this kind ever. Like it is so bad. But I think part of the problem is, is we last season got pretty invested in Jacob as a kid, as the way in which we know him.

[00:29:47] Correct. And so now they're wanting us to care about adult Jacob, despite the fact that we have not heard him talk. So it's hard for me to be excited and to be like, this is the moment we've been waiting for, where it's just like,

[00:30:03] I don't know who this person is. Obviously, we're supposed to believe that he's Jacob. Don't know if he is. So it's hard. One, it's been a messy season. But two, I don't know this person. I know I know the kid. I care about the kid. Yes.

[00:30:18] But I don't know this person. So it's not as exciting as I think it should be. Go ahead, right. I was going to say adult Jacob would be a different show. Like you would. There is a scenario where if that is him, where we care about 20

[00:30:30] whatever year old Jacob. But you need hours of episode time to get to that point. It's a different. It's very it's obviously a different actor and a different timeline. And like we did, there's no investment there. I think that's so ultimately to brand to your point,

[00:30:45] the show could have still been pretty rocky six episodes in if in 1814 Jacob was nine now and like but like at least we would have that tangible season one to see him and be excited and then we can figure it out from there. Yeah, right.

[00:30:59] They just missed in every which way. I have to believe there's something they're not telling us with Jacob. I have to believe that because if if it is just as plain and simple as that's 24 year old Jacob, bad, really bad.

[00:31:12] And also at this point and knowing what I've said on this podcast at this point, if we if if we find out that's not Jacob and it actually is eight or nine year

[00:31:22] old Jacob and they can take him back to present day and he can hug Andy McDowell. Everything I've said about how that's terrible television still holds. But I would prefer that immensely over what we're getting.

[00:31:37] I would prefer it's still kid Jacob and they have pretty much made their bed that Andy McDowell is going to get to hug her kid again. And they're they're painting that right now. And I don't know how they're going to make that happen unless it's

[00:31:53] some sequence where she goes back in time and jumps in the pond. And so I that still is preferred over this is adult Jacob. We've just found new and inventive ways for him to be completely silent for four straight episodes.

[00:32:07] Totally. And one last thing I know we're running along. I do just want to say it's like I still think the show is very clever. And this is the first time like I'm being super critical on here in my entire year and a half, whatever it's been.

[00:32:16] I do just want to say like this. I'm Dan. I'm sure you both said this a million times. Like season twos are tough. The show, as I hope we get a season three, they can absolutely course correct. The last four episodes might be good. Season twos are tough.

[00:32:28] I give them credit for trying to go very high concept. I think it was just a little too much on the fifth story. It should have been on the floor. I'm wildly enough still hopeful because I know what they can do. Like, I'm still hopeful.

[00:32:39] I think it's still better than most of what we watch on home. The showrunners proved in season one that correct there that they're they're capable showrunners. They can create things. 100%. I think the biggest hurdle for me right now is in season one. Everything felt intentional.

[00:32:55] Season two, everything feels coincidental. Correct. And so really like everything that was happening in season one that we were like, well, that's it all felt like somebody had this amazing idea and they storyboarded and it was this phenomenal thing.

[00:33:07] And season two is like, what if we did that? What if we did this? And so but I think they can. I still like it. We could get to the end of season two, I think, and still be like, OK, there was a little started rocky.

[00:33:20] A lot of time. But it ended great. So I don't know. We'll see. I think it's as it's just a little depressing that season six was like this phenomenal episode of one. And so you can episode six. Yeah, I do. Want to be clear.

[00:33:32] You've been time traveling, though, and you see this is phenomenal. Yeah. That's what they bring in the talking bat. So we don't we don't have a clip because I couldn't air it. It would be a problem. It'd be it'd be yeah, there'd be copyright all over the place.

[00:33:48] I think that's right. Yeah. Paradox. Yeah. The best threat. Paradox. We all know the boot bat paradox even. I just I think it should be clear if it isn't before, like because some people are like, I can't think you guys are being too hard on this.

[00:34:00] Like we don't just like this show isn't designed for us to bash things like we're really trying to give a critical opinion when the show is great. I would tell you the show is great when I don't think it's like holding up its end of the bargain.

[00:34:12] We're going to tell you that, too. So I'm hopeful. But I'm this episode was a real haymaker in the oh, no, this show isn't good anymore. And that was that was very, very, very disappointing. Let's get to all the fields.

[00:34:27] We're talking about what this episode games feels like. Oh, really? Yeah. That segment, huh? We still do. Yeah. Brand, this one's kind of for you. It's a very small, quick moment. But at one point when Kat gets back, it must be the first scene after

[00:34:43] because they started in 1814 again. She's talking to Elliot and she's like, I found Jacob. And he's like, like, really this time? Like you actually I was just like, hey, even he thought it was B.S.

[00:34:53] a couple of weeks ago when he was like, no, he's trying to be supportive. But you and I know. Yeah, yeah. That was as best I had. But I thought it made me laugh. I'm back on the Colton's a horse wagon.

[00:35:06] I think this episode I said, what did you do? Jake and Rick are a little bit of a couple of us. I know. Listen, we I went pretty hard early on in the season. It was like a Colton's a horse. And it's silly. It's silly.

[00:35:21] Is it is it is it silly? You tell you watch that scene with Dell on the horse and you tell me that that horse isn't cold and you tell me with a straight face that horse is not Colton. You I actually am kind of with you with me.

[00:35:37] Like, I love it. I love it. Yeah. It's a horse. Cordon's a horse and Elliot's villain. And I think those are two things that we're all willing to die for. That's how they get the three of us back. Yeah, yes, that's right.

[00:35:50] Yeah, yeah. Oh, Colton's a horse. Yeah, for sure. My feels was something that will be a part of the wait what segment. But I like the the original idea or at least the intention of it, which is that this family keeps the landline

[00:36:06] because that is the one phone number that the kid knows. I love that as an idea of like, you know, if this kid is lost somewhere, it's like this thing that doesn't make a lot of sense, which we'll get to later.

[00:36:19] But it shows you like that hope is a good kind of contagious. You know, even Andy McDowell's character Dell, who's trying to act like she's she's done with this is a memorial ceremony. Like Colton was just full of hope, like

[00:36:33] like hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. Right. To quote Shawshank, like she still has that somewhere in the fiber of her soul. And I love that the germination of that idea. There we go. See, look at that. A real feel of that.

[00:36:49] I'll say a quick break. Any update on that eBay? Nothing yet. All right. Thank you. When's it close? I got 24 hours. Oh, yeah. We'll be right back. And I thought. It's time for the way, what any update real quick? No, it's that break was long.

[00:37:13] If we keep this episode going, we may be able to find out. Yeah, we'll certainly be down to 23 hours by the end of this. Yes, yes. Of course. I'll let the people know if it happens. Yes. Or if it doesn't, that'd be rough. That'd be rough.

[00:37:25] Yeah, that'd be a day. I don't want to live now that day. I want. I agree with you so quickly. You look like absolutely not. I think I'm with what I meant was Liam Neeson's set of skills. You know, that's what his skills are.

[00:37:41] I've said the skills. Yeah, you do. Heck yeah, you do. I don't believe I don't get in the weeds on it. What I meant was, OK, that wouldn't be a day I'd enjoy living. I do. I'm pumped to live. It's time for the way what?

[00:37:55] It's where we live. You bet. Amen. Same. Double, double that. Double for me. Stupid. Oh, you're having a side of the way. What? Ryan, I'm a little worried here because I only have two. And Dan, they're both related to the landlines. Hopefully I'm not stealing either.

[00:38:12] No, please go for it. Well, I we could be on totally different pages for all I know. So for my first one's a two parter. Why not believe a psychic about a lead about a missing child?

[00:38:24] But also my bigger part of that is like, why did that come up so early into that conversation? Like, yeah. Hello. I think I have a lead on Jake. By the way, I'm a like you wouldn't like you wouldn't do it like, hey, hello.

[00:38:35] I have a lead on a missing person. By the way, I work for the sanitation company here and local, you know, regional Canada. Like what? And like, why would you say that? Very strange. Yeah. And it happens all the time, apparently.

[00:38:48] And then and then my other one is Del's phone has seemingly an infinite amount of rings. Like there's no answering machine at the Dell house. Like she's like in the farm talking to Colton, the horse. And then she like sprints inside. It's at least 200 yards away.

[00:39:03] And she can hear that phone ring from all the way out there. Clearly hooked up to a speaker on the property and then rings at least 25. It's one hundred and eight decibel phone ring. If you're right, turn it out to 10. Yeah, here's the thing.

[00:39:21] If they had an answering machine, Jacob would have been found by now. Yeah. I'm going to try to leave a message for years. It's unbelievable. He comes home in like twenty forty three. Like what'd you do with the answering machine? Like so that's it for me.

[00:39:35] Hope I didn't steal any of that. Ryan, do you remember the McDonald's commercial from the late 80s that goes hard nose misses Hatcher? I vaguely. Yeah, thanks. I got a couple. Brainy anyway, what's one? One. I know that my memory is worse than most people.

[00:39:58] I am awful with names. I'm awful with words. I'm not with McDonald's commercials. Not with McDonald's commercials. But I have a tough time remembering most things. But what I know 100 percent I would not remember the symbol on a boot that kicked me down.

[00:40:23] No, I 100 percent would not remember that. She does. Yes, she does. She remembers the symbol on a boot that kicked her down. That's just that's incredible. Yeah, let's go. Incredible. What a skill. She should she should be like a private investigator.

[00:40:44] She should not just be working at the archives. I another like one. These are just like things that are convenient, like remembering that convenient leaving to go check the execution book and then coming back and only being a day convenience. Yes. Like, yes.

[00:41:04] When is the when is the pun ever done that where it's just a day where it's just one one day? The puns super dope today. Love that for everybody involved. It was having a good day. It's having a good day. Yeah. Also convenient.

[00:41:19] She needs to go back to the present. Right. That ledger. Yes, yes. Yeah. So they they drug everybody, including Goodwin, who who gets that while he drinks it while thinking he's about to get some hanky panky. That's right. Yes.

[00:41:36] Which is interesting only because he in the process of thinking I'm getting hanky panky goes, I could go over to my bed, lay down. Now I'm going to go to my office desk and sit down in the chair where all good hanky panky's happen.

[00:41:57] Here's the the the the amount of times and we talked about this a little bit, but she says, you know, OK, so they found there someone might it might be Jacob dead body. Yeah. She tells Alice this happens. It happens, you know, right. That was the best.

[00:42:18] Why? Why? Why are they calling everybody who's lost a child and gone? Might have a might have them. Might have them. We haven't we haven't really taken a good look. Could be. Could be. Are they calling up everyone that has a missing child? Especially one from 20 years ago.

[00:42:39] And every time we found a corpse, but also like everyone looking. But everyone looking for that. Well, now, but also you got that list. What the hell? What the heck's going on in this small town where on a regular basis,

[00:42:53] small boys are just showing up like just they're just rolling on from the water. What is why is this happened so many times? And she's like, yeah, it's another one. I don't know what I realized, but at least I know that guns

[00:43:09] are different now than they were then. But like just shooter. We were told if if if you're someone we don't know, like we're going to shoot you. They see this white witch and a dressing up running through the woods.

[00:43:29] They're like to start off with very close to her. Correct. They open the door. They run out. She's like, oh, no, just shooter. Shooter. Shooter. Take a few shots. Just take just take a couple.

[00:43:41] Just I know you guys are all high on your, you know, rum and rum and Jimmy Jimmy weed, whatever it's called. But like weed. Thank you. Got a you got a you got to take a shot there. The number of times and reasons that they tell Kat

[00:43:57] she needs to go back like the cat decides to leave her brother is it's just piling up at this point. At the beginning of this episode, they're like, you can help us more in present day. And she's like, you bet. Or like, you know what?

[00:44:09] I could run to the pond and that way you guys will be safe. I'm on it. Like she's been looking for her brother for twenty five years and she is looking it's like it's like Bran leaving a party. Like he's just there. He showed up early.

[00:44:23] He doesn't want to be there. And it's like, what do I need to do to get out of here? She is she is looking for every possible reason to not be with her brother. It is crazy to me. Let's talk landline for a moment, shall we?

[00:44:38] Yours are both on it, right? The fact that they keep the landline but only have it downstairs is wild. That's a wild move. It's like you we should keep the phone. Should we take all the phone lines out of the rest of the house

[00:44:51] and just keep the one in the kitchen? Yes, because if it rings at one hundred eight decibels, we would have to run all the way to that one phone every time, which is is something early. We see a flashback of Colton and the phone rings.

[00:45:04] They're sitting at the table and the phone rings. And he's like, you see, Delhi, this is why a Landry never gives up hope. That is a bold, bold move in the year 1999 or 2000 before cell phones. Guys, your phone would ring for all manner of things.

[00:45:23] There are so many reasons like my phone in the evening would ring all the time. We we have catch X files. We have got we have caller ID. Literally, there is so many reasons someone could be calling your house

[00:45:37] for you to stand up from the table and be like, this is it. This is why we have hope because somebody you dumb woman. This is why. Yeah, we know. Up at the old Herald Archives, they have a ledger,

[00:45:51] a death ledger from 210 years ago, and it is pristine. My children with a book from the library one day look. It looks worse than this death ledger from 210 years ago. It is very, very impressive. The line I told you, Jimson weed is not entirely dependable.

[00:46:15] One of my favorite lines I've seen on TV all year. It's like, how do we poison everybody but then still have them wake up very easily? We do Jimson weed, which causes hallucinations. They all collectively fall asleep at the exact same time,

[00:46:33] but then they can all be awakened very, very easily because the Jimson weed isn't entirely dependable. Get out of here. Get out of here right now. That's ridiculous. And then two to close it. The reason this ending is so bad.

[00:46:49] First of all, she drops that key in the top of the dirt last week on this program. I made a joke to brand that somehow the shoes are right under the top soil there for 200 years. I had a theory and the way homes like hold my beer.

[00:47:07] This key is going to be dropped in 1814. I just want to really quick. Can I correct you before you die? Please do, because your joke wasn't for 200 years to close. You were joking that because I said that he might have been dead. That's right. She's doing that in 1814.

[00:47:22] So it would only been 20 years. So you're like, so and we were already saying how unlikely that is. Yeah. So it's not 20 years. Yeah. At the end of this. What happens with this key?

[00:47:36] We find that she drops this key right outside of the pond, not under the dirt on top of the dirt. And Jacob in 1999 finds it as though he was in cement. Like it is not moved. Erosion doesn't exist. Seasons don't exist. Wind does not exist.

[00:47:58] It's in the exact spot. She dropped it all the way back in 1814. Yeah, that's hysterical. And then last but not least, this is a terrible continuity error. At the end of season one, we see the white witch running.

[00:48:13] She gets to the pond and then we see her face for the first time and it's cat and cat gives this rise. Smile like, like I don't know if you guys remember this. It's a big moment. It ends the season. She gives this smile like I got him.

[00:48:28] I, I, I, I got him. I did something like I'm six. I've been successful at doing something. Um, cut to this season where we get that same scene again and she gets to the rock and this time it's not any of that.

[00:48:43] It's just pure panic and jumping in so she doesn't get shot. Guys, you can't do that. Like the people that watch this show are looking at clues way like, like way harder than we are.

[00:48:57] You cannot show the same scene twice and have those two very different reactions happening at the same time. Can't do it. That's all I got. Uh, it's time for sink or swim.

[00:49:09] And it's where we talk about when this episode made a sink, one of those episode made a swim and everything in between. Uh, Ryan. Uh, Brent, I again, hope I'm not infringing on your territory. I, well, here's the thing.

[00:49:23] I wasn't as invested in nearly nude as you were last week. I mean, you were, you were taken off your shirt. You were taken off your wedding ring, which was, you know, a choice. But like, you know, uh, we, I don't think that that is a completely accurate.

[00:49:42] Literally took your ring off as we were talking about nearly nude. It's what you did. That was coincidental. I took my ring off. Boy, you literally took the ring off. I play with it all the time. I play with it.

[00:49:53] I've not seen you do it since I do it every day. All that I've never seen. That's the only time I've ever seen it. Hours today. I haven't seen it happen yet today. Yeah. Uh, interesting. They got an eBay update.

[00:50:05] Uh, so, but you know, uh, all of that neither here nor there. Like, so we go nearly nude last week and we all thought that was cool. Right? Uh, but now this week we're just exchanging pleasantries with hot neighbor guy over a nice glass of wine.

[00:50:18] And then we leave without Neri a hug. Good night. Give me a break. Weak sauce. We didn't like it. I'm sinking. Well, he's sinking at everybody. Uh, I mean, obviously I am swimming the Colton horse. I think this episode more than ever before.

[00:50:35] It's just, it's just clear as crystal. I sink is, you know what? We are a 60% of the way through this season. I am becoming increasingly concerned that we're not going to get any more about the dirt.

[00:50:51] I don't, I don't think people care about the dirt quite as much as I do, but this season starts with Dale picking dirt going. That's good. Yeah. Why? I'm getting worried. I know I'm way, you know, we've talked about all the things we're worried about this season.

[00:51:12] How, you know, I don't know how it's all going to end up if I, if they don't bring back up the dirt again, unforgivable. What you think about the dirt is me on pretty much everything. I'm getting, I'm sinking thinking about the fact that aside from Jacob, which

[00:51:30] we've spent an exorbitant amount of time on, I'm getting the feeling. We're not going to get much more on anything else. Um, and I'm hoping with four episodes left that I'm wrong and we get a little bit

[00:51:43] more something concrete on Elliott or something concrete on all these new people that popped up and then we've ignored for the last turn. The hot lobster kid. Yeah. The, the intern has like, I got very in turn to the hot lobster kid live. Oh, what a show.

[00:52:01] What are show their B sides were dude harmonica alone. Worth the trip. Well, even like one of the, one of the odds that we get, um, another, uh, episode with adults. What's his name? The guy that Alice kissed back in 99. You remember how he came in last season?

[00:52:19] Nick. Yeah. Oh, your boy, Nick. Yeah. Like I'm still interested in that. And like, they did like a little, a little tease, like where he, like he, it's clear that he kind of like wreck it, like actually did recognize her, uh, as he was leaving town.

[00:52:34] I don't, I just, they did. They say set up so much, they set up so much and we're just spending so much time in 1840 took a little trip with Jacob who doesn't talk to the, to the point about the intern too.

[00:52:48] It's like the intern is like in every previously on like the way home. Yeah. And then she's never in the, she's in every previously on, even though she's really like a scene or something. Like, uh, yeah, there's a lot.

[00:53:03] I mean, there's a, they've, they've set up a lot and maybe some of it. What about that? Horse. I think we can all establish Colton's horse. I'm willing to give you that. Maybe not everyone cares about the term.

[00:53:20] Undermining all of our critical reputation here when the show runners are like, well, there's one podcast that doesn't like us, but the one guy only cares about Colton being a horse and the dirt. Oh, well we don't care about them. That's fine. Fair.

[00:53:35] Listen, if that's how I got to go out, that's how I got to go. There's nothing I can do about it. Uh, we did, we did it. We did it almost an hour here on an episode. We didn't like any, any, any, any update. It's good.

[00:53:47] I'm just going to double check one more time. Uh, your offer has been set. What was sent? We'll let you know when the seller responds. Could you message him and just be like, Hey, want to let you know, like this would actually be big for me.

[00:53:58] Talked about you on the podcast. Like maybe sweeten the deal a little bit. I mean, it does seem like it would be, we just gave a lot of free press. We did. I don't remember this guy is. Yeah.

[00:54:08] What's I don't want to give out the name just in case someone tries to swipe me with a better offer. All right. Here's what we're going to do though. You let him know that if he gives it to you.

[00:54:15] Listening right now is going to swipe you with a better offer. This doesn't come out for four days, right? Yeah. I think it's the people in the chat. You think the chat swiping you, Dan, here's the thing you're trying to make fun, but

[00:54:26] you know, I'm incredibly serious right now about why no, because if you had given it out to our dear listeners, you had given it out. Bramble jam would have outbid you for the story and then I would have sent it to you. That actually would have been mighty.

[00:54:41] Oh, that was, that was a miss on my part. I'm sorry, Brian. You were saying something. I apologize. Um, yeah, I think it might. Yeah. Is it, is it dynamic? Is it dynamic? Uh, Aaron is a shark. Yeah. Dynamic or it as a dynamic it hardware. That's right.

[00:54:59] You're about to get your, what price are you seeing it listed for? Two 49 99 or best. So he just did a sweeping. I, sometimes they do a price change for people watching it. He just lowered it for everybody. I might have two watched in the last 24 hours.

[00:55:14] Well, neither of those are me. Oh boy. Oh, two other people are interested in this piece of crap machine. All right, Dan, you have a nice day. I'll see you next time. Maybe the first one you a podcast is produced by Aaron Shea for more
