The Way Home - S03E02 - The Way We Were (2025) ft. Ryan Pappolla

Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTH

Kat hears the voicemail and freaks out, so she runs to the pond. She tells Elliot he can’t come, then jumps in. Elliot sees a jacket on the ground and suddenly gets a call from Vic Augustine—his dad.

Speaking of Vic Augustine, Alice comes out of the pond and runs to the farm. It’s clear she’s not in her own time. She hears an older boy yelling at a younger boy, who’s running around with a guitar. The older boy calls him Vic Augustine and says the guitar belongs to Colt! They spot Alice and call her over. The older boy, Rick, introduces himself and invites her to join them on their way to Coyes—they’re planning to give the guitar to Rick’s best buddy, Colt.

Kat shows up just after they drive off, and Vic is mean to her. She’s like, “Yeah, that tracks.”

In the present day, Vic ends up showing up at Elliot’s house and tells him he’s staying there.

Back in 1974, they arrive at Coyes, and Alice meets 1974 Evalyn, who is Rick’s good friend. Then Colton walks in, and Alice is like, hubba hubba—until she remembers he’s her grandpa. (I mean, I don’t know if that’s exactly what she was thinking, but that’s how it seemed to me.) Evalyn invites Alice to a party, and she really wants to go. Just then, Kat shows up and tells Alice they’re going back home, but Alice insists she wants to stay, get to know Colton, and have some fun before her life gets serious in September. Surprisingly, Kat agrees but tells her to get home safe. Wild.

Meanwhile, Jacob goes to the cemetery to talk to his 1800s family. He sees his own tombstone, which he shares with his dad, and has a flashback of his dad talking about how amazing their ancestors were. Del shows up, and Jacob finally tells her the truth about why he’s there. It makes her sad.

Kat watches as Alice hangs out with Colton and their friends, even singing together.

1974 Del eventually shows up—she’s new in town. Jacob finally gathers the courage to talk to her, and he mentions how much he hates disco and doesn’t understand its popularity. Del says, “I love disco, and I’m a lot like it,” then storms off.

At the party for the new book release, a man named Goodwin, whom no one seems to know, shows up and starts talking trash. Jacob isn’t having it and accidentally lets it slip that he lived through some of the events in the book. Everyone is like, What?! but he covers by saying his dad told him stories, and they all accept it.

Later, Del and Jacob have a heart-to-heart. He assures her that he does want to be there, and she tells him she’ll stop treating him like a little boy.

Elliot asks Kat to move in with him, and she’s thrilled. Alice comes back just in time to see it and is happy for them. She tells her mom she’s never going back to 1974, but Kat says, “Spoiler alert—you do, and you sing with him.”

Alice learns that Rick died later that same night. She realizes Colton had walked her home, which means she must have saved his life. Determined, she decides to check on Colton.

Meanwhile, Vic is tearing up Elliot’s house, demanding, “WHERE IS IT?!” Elliot asks, “Where is what?” Vic yells, “Your mom’s ring!”

Alice rushes to the pond, arrives in 1974, and sees Colton jumping into the pond.

[00:00:00] Hi, I'm Brandon. I love the Way Home. Ryan, I like the Way Home. I'm Dan. I despise the way home and this is Deck The Hallmark Podcast. Deck The Hallmark is this podcast. And Friends host this podcast. We hope you like this jolly podcast.

[00:00:31] Well, hi, everybody. How are we? You know, Dan, I don't need it from you. I didn't do anything. You know, I walk in. My entrance to this show is I despise whatever's on Hallmark. That's what I say by default. You heard the extra stank on it, though. I didn't put the extra stank on anything. There was a pause. The pause is a stank. I didn't know how. I'm conflicted. I didn't know how to present it. Sometimes you'll do.

[00:00:59] So when you like something, you'll go and I despise the way home. You'll do that. And people go, oh, Dan, like the episode. This was Dan and I despise. No, no, we can play it back. Despise. No, no, no, no, no. Double kick and everything. It was tough. Liars who lie. It's a new year. I thought it was going to be new Dan. Same Dan. Show's still the show. Show's still the show.

[00:01:28] I'm excited to talk about it. Ryan, how are you? How was your weekend? Really, really, really good. It's Monday after all. Yeah. Yeah. We got it. It's Thursday. It's Thursday. I was really nice of you to be thinking of my weekend. 16th of January right now. Just because it's Thursday. I haven't seen you since last week. That's right. It was a good weekend. I'm rebuilding the shelves. I'm rebuilding the shelves. Rebuilding the shelves. What does that mean?

[00:01:58] Well, no, because I had the one. It doesn't make camera. I had the one that was dedicated to Christmas. Ah, yes. So I had to swap all that stuff out. Oh, now's the time, yeah. And swap all the stuff. But it's a process. It took all weekend. But it's Thursday now and it's better. You know, I keep forgetting to tell you this, but my boys have gotten into Power Rangers on Netflix. Oh, wow. I want to say it's Ninja Steel or something. Yeah. Ninja Steel. Not a bad season. It's real goofy.

[00:02:28] A bunch of goofy. Talk about stank. Ryan didn't like Ninja Steel. Not a bad season. No. I mean, the later stuff, you know, it doesn't connect with me. Sure. Sure. 100%. Yes, of course. There are some later seasons that are great, but Ninja Steel's cool. It's fine. Some of them are great. That one's cool. So do the math. But I always forget how like silly it is. Like there are people just kind of sitting there in wild costumes. Yeah. Yeah. And like that's their day.

[00:02:57] A lot of practical effects. That's their day. They're just in a wild costume. Yeah. I mean, and then you have folks like me who, you know, take the core mythos of it and try to make it seem far more serious than it was. No. No. I mean, that's how I operate my life. Did it hurt your feelings when I just said it was silly? No, it is a silly program. It's a silly show. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I don't think I, I don't think I dispute that ever. I feel like there are some pretentious Power Ranger fans out there that go, don't, don't disrespect the art. I'm not one of those people. What did you think of the movie?

[00:03:27] I saw the movie. Panda and I went to see it. The, the 2017 one. The one. Yeah. The one, the most recent. The most recent. Say what? The Elizabeth Banks was Rita Wilson. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I think the first half of it's stronger than the second half. I think it lost its way. It becomes a CGI fest in the last 30 or so minutes. And yeah, if he wanted to like my hardcore Power Ranger fan complaint about that movie is they build up to the more for like an hour and 10 minutes. And then the action is just very disjointed.

[00:03:57] I wish I could have had like a tackle at that script. I would have done a lot of things differently. Yeah. Yeah. Did they, was that on the table? You have no tackle. I mean, I was like, like, you know, I'm just like, I wish I wish I want. I wish I won out. Like, you know, I think I'd crush. Like you give me a chance at like a semi-serious Power Rangers feature. I think I'd crush. You hear that everyone? The serious. You hear that everybody? What about the movie that came out last year? The Netflix, like where they brought it, brought people back, didn't they? Or something? Yeah.

[00:04:24] It was, I would say that was more of a short feature. That was very nice. But that, that, you know, that did a really nice job of blending the goofy spirit of the show. But they also, they were, they were a little more like people got like, you know, stabbed with swords and that stuff doesn't happen in the television proper show. Well, it was like, you know, it was, there was, there was a mix of young and old there. So it was, it was nice. There were, they were, they were getting stabbed with swords. They stabbed Rita right through the chest. Yeah. They, yeah, man. And people, yeah, they say killed.

[00:04:54] You can't say killed in Power Rangers proper. You can't say killed in Power Rangers proper. You got destroyed. You destroy the monsters. You don't kill them. You want to know what I'm making? I want to make a promise of, to you right now, here, right here. Wow. What? So Philo Deep Dive has come back. Philo Deep Dive has come back. New season. Yeah. Same show. Same show. Different shows that we're reviewing for. Same show. Different show. And so I just went into Philo and I searched Power Rangers. Okay. Of course, Power Rangers is not on. They had the exclusive deal or whatever with somebody.

[00:05:22] But there are programs about Power Rangers. Okay. Including one episode of Cake Wars, which is Power Rangers themed. Oh. And one episode of Shipping Wars. Which is Power Rangers themed. Is Shipping Wars like shipping like when you ship a couple in a television show? No. No. No. No. It's like when there's shipping containers. Oh. That sounds even more up my alley. You did one of them, I think. Have I done one with it? I think so. It's never stopped me before. No. And so I'm going to give it to you. Which of. Do you want me to watch? Cake Wars.

[00:05:52] Cake Wars. Cake Wars. Cake Wars or Power Rangers Shipping Wars? No. Let's do Cake Wars. Yeah. All right. For sure. I'll do it. I'll do it in the next couple weeks. I got the deckies are in two days. How excited are you? Who do you got? Who'd you put money on? Yeah. Or a point. Or just for fun. I have a 20 leg parlay that I can't talk about on the air. Of course. 20 leg. Yeah. What was your favorite of the year that you saw? I think there's a film of the year that I saw. Hallmark or TV Christmas? The Jordan Fisher deal I quite liked. Oh, yeah. Five year Christmas party.

[00:06:21] And then Unwrapping Christmas, Janney's Good Times. Oh, yeah. All the Hallmark Plus joints were dynamite, you know? Yeah. So good. So, so good. Sylvia's Dilemma, I believe, is what we talked about. That's right. That's right. She's still thinking about it. Roxy's Road. Roxy's Road. Yeah. Of course. All right. Should we talk about The Way Home? Let's talk about The Way Home. Way Home Season 3. Dan despised this one, Bran. He despised it. God almighty. I'm not doing this. I did not. I'm very conflicted. He didn't like it at all. It was a pause. Here we go.

[00:06:51] I want to hear what Ryan has to say after his hot take last week. I want to hear what he has to say before we go anywhere. Well, Dan, let me review my notes while Bran recaps the episode. Lots to get to. Season 3, Episode 2. It's called The Way We Were. What's that song? Do you know that song? That's a movie. It's Barber Streisand, Robert Redford. We talked about it last episode. Barber Streisand again. Oh, we talked about that last week. Yeah, don't rain on our parade. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. That's right. January 10th. It was a long time ago. January 10th, 2025 is when happy birthday to me on that day. It went snowed, too.

[00:07:21] It's snowed, man. It's been so long. I don't want to know something like this. Kat hears the voicemail from Alice. She freaks out, runs to the pond. She tells Elliot, you can't come because she doesn't want to look after him, which was like one of the weird things you can say to another adult is I don't want to have to keep watch over you. Anyway, Elliot's being, you know, he can't go because she said no.

[00:07:49] So he sees a jacket on the ground and suddenly he gets a call from Vic Augustine. And we, Dan, you and I immediately knew. We knew who Vic Augustine was. We knew he had a brother, Rick Augustine. I totally remembered over here. I got to be a single guest wrong. I'm glad we all knew right away. I spent so much time on IMDb during this episode because there's a lot of characters from the past that come back. And that's great. But that's his dad.

[00:08:19] Speaking of Vic Augustine, Alice comes out of the pond, runs to the farm. It's clear she's not in her own time because she hears an older boy yelling at a younger boy who's running around with a guitar. The older boy says, give that back, Vic Augustine. Sweet. Classic brothers calling each other by full names. You got it, Ghost. Little boy, Vic Augustine. Bigger boy, Rick Augustine. Rick Augustine.

[00:08:46] And he says that the guitar that he's running around with belongs to Colt. They spot Alice over there just watching. And so they call her over. The older boy, Rick, introduces himself and invites her to join them. They're going to coils. So come on. Come on down the coils. And they're planning to give the guitar to Rick's best buddy, Colts. Cat shows up just as they drive off.

[00:09:13] And Vic Augustine is very mean to this adult woman. And it's basically like, no, you can't borrow my bike. Walk. And she's like, yeah, that tracks. You're a jerk. Then you're a jerk now. And present day, Vic Augustine shows up at Elliot's house. And it's like, wow, you've really done some work to this place. And he's like, I'm staying. I'm going to be here now. Back in 1974, they arrive at coils.

[00:09:40] And Alice meets 1974 Evelyn, who is Rick's good friend. There's a friend group, Rick, Evelyn, and Colton. Colton walks in. And Alice is like, hubba hubba until she remembers that as her grandpa. And like, listen, I don't know. I don't know if that's what she was thinking. Leah Thompson, you know about Leah Thompson. You're a big fan. And in Back to the Future, it's a Back to the Future moment. And it's uncomfortable.

[00:10:09] I don't know if that's what they meant. I don't think they meant it. But when she locks eyes with young Colton, it's uncomfortable. Did you pick up any hubba hubba, Ryan? I mean, I think there was some accidental hubba hubba. There was some definite accidental hubba hubba. No question about it. None of us have been in that situation. No. When you see a younger person you're related to from back, you time travel. You see someone. And you forget that you're related to them. In my time travels, I've never been in that situation.

[00:10:38] Who are we to judge, really? Who are we? We haven't been in Alice's shoes. She caught herself. She caught herself, though. And that's important. Anyway, Evelyn invites Alice to a party. She really wants to go. Just then, Kat shows up and tells Alice that they have to go back home. Alice insists that she wants to stick around, you know, hang out with her grandpa a little bit and have some fun before life gets serious in September. All right. Yeah, I guess you can say, wake me up when September ends.

[00:11:08] Surprisingly, it categories and tells her to get home safe, which is just a wild moment in parenting history. Meanwhile, Jacob goes to the cemetery to talk to his 1800 family because they got their tombstones there. Why did I say it like that? I don't know. What do you want on your tombstone? Love friends, love family, love bacon. Okay. What about the magic? Love the magic. Bacon ahead of magic. I didn't see it coming. How about this?

[00:11:37] Love friends, love family. Magic's third. No, no. Wow. Let's do this. Let's do this. Well, friends over family. I love you. Also, bacon over magic. Okay. Hold on. This guy might be a narcissist. Hold on. Love, love. I love myself. I love. And the magic and bacon. I loved my statue. In that order. Okay, great. Thank you. I loved my family. Loved my friends. Loved my magic. Winner of 50 championships in this time.

[00:12:09] Loved bacon and loved my statue approved by Knox White. And I got to be honest, man. The fact that there's nothing about your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on there is crazy. Yeah, not ideal. Listen, you don't know where my journey's going, man. What an interesting thing to have on your tombstone. 50 titles for the magic. They're at zero as we speak. You think you're going to be 80. And I'm 33. And I win 50 in a row. You're going to be 83 before they accomplish it. Hey, it's not impossible. With what you eat.

[00:12:38] It might be impossible. We're doing a thing. Interesting tombstone. Interesting tombstone. I didn't write it. Tombstone. I asked you what you wanted on your tombstone. I didn't write it. The one you wrote was love friends, love myself, love bacon. Love bacon. In out of order. Yeah. Anywho. Cat watches Alice hang out with Colton. She doesn't immediately go back. I'll have pepperoni and jalapeno on my tombstone.

[00:13:06] That's a joke for 90s kids. And I hope they appreciate it. Oh, tombstone pizza. Yeah. Nice, bro. It was a whole commercial bit. That's great. I love that. It's like the guys in jail. It's like, what do you want on your tombstone? My favorite frozen pizza, bud. Wow. Your favorite frozen pizza is tombstone. I love tombstone. Boy. Shout out. You haven't. Power Rangers and tombstone. Are you? Were you born in the right decade? That's something that I would have done as a child. You're 10 years younger than me. Like, it's just crazy. I mean, listen. Red Baron's cool.

[00:13:37] Like, you know. These are two of the worst pizzas of all time. Grant, keep going. Keep going, Grant. You're Italian? I'm taking that card. I'm taking that card away from you. You can't. Wait, am I missing out on a breath of great Italian frozen pie? Anything is, any rising crust pizza is better than tombstone and Red Baron. Is it Fraschetta? Fraschetta. Yeah, Fraschetta. That's a great frozen pizza. I mean, listen to the name. Fraschetta. I said Fraschetta. Language.

[00:14:08] Loved friends. Couldn't pronounce words. Loved bacon. Honestly, not being able to pronounce words will be on my tombstone. That's right. Or should I say my tombstone? Um, 1974, Del eventually- We always stay on track here. Eventually shows up. She's new in town. Uh, Jacob finally gathers the courage to, uh, not Jacob. Sorry. That'd be weird. No, he's in the present day killing folks. Yes. Uh, Colton finally gains the courage to go talk to her and he mentions that, uh, he hates

[00:14:36] disco and, uh, doesn't understand why it's so popular. Del says, I love disco and I'm a lot like disco. Then she storms off. Who isn't? Um, at the party, uh, for the new book release, a man shows up, a good one, a good man, a good, a good one man. Good one man. Um, and he seems really mad about it and how it's kind of changed. You know, you're changing the past, all that stuff. Jacob's not having it.

[00:15:03] Uh, he accidentally lets it slip that he lived through these events. Uh, I've lived it. And then everyone's like, what? And he's like, my dad told me stories. So I feel like I lived. And then Sam to the rescue. He's got it. That's right. Sam to the rescue. Uh, later Del and Jacob have a heart to heart. He assures her that he really does want to be there. And she tells him that she's going to stop treating him like a little boy. And also, uh, I'm with Sam now. So you should know that.

[00:15:32] Uh, Elliot asks, uh, Kat to move in with him and she's thrilled. Alice comes back just in time to see it and, uh, is happy for them. She tells her, uh, mom that she's never going back to 1974. And Kat says, spoiler alert, you do. You sing with him. We know it's your voice. So, your hands are tied. Um, Alice learns that Rick, uh, died later that same night. So that's tough.

[00:16:00] Uh, she realizes Colton was going to ride with him, but ended up walking her home, which means that she may have saved his life. So now she's like, what's going on? So she has to go back and she has to check on Colton. How you doing? You just lost your best buddy, obviously. Meanwhile, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, Papa. Papa Elliot's Papa, uh, is, uh, tearing up the house cause he's not there. He's like, where is it?

[00:16:29] You mean Vic Augustine? Yes. Vic Augustine. Elliot's Papa. Papa Elliot's Papa. Papa Elliot. That's right. Papa Augustine. Yeah. Papa Augustine. Uh, it's like, where is it? And Elliot's like, what are you talking about? He's like, your mom's ring. Uh, Alice rushes back to the pond, arrives in 1974 and sees Colton splashing around in the pond. And that my friends was The Way Home Season 3 Episode 2 The Way We Were.

[00:16:59] We did it. There's angels in the outfield and in the infield. Uh, let's see this. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We will break this episode of television down here on Deck the Hallmark. Hi everybody. Welcome back. Uh, what's up? Not much, man. What's up with you? Not a ton. You already eating some Tombstone. Tombstone and Red Baron duking it out for best frozen pizza is a wild take.

[00:17:28] What's your top frozen pizza, Thompson? It's Fruschetta and DiGiorno. If I, I don't like frozen pizza. I want to be very clear. I've, I've, I've aged out. I don't. You can do that bit all you want. I stand by it. I've aged out of it and I'm too good for it. I, I, I don't, I'm just letting you know. That's what I'm going to say on this tombstone. I am. I am 100. It's too good. I am 100% not here to eat frozen pizza. Would rather, would, would rather not eat it ever. I love frozen pizza.

[00:17:58] Having said that, if I have to. Lee, clip that off. Dan's too good for frozen. Zah. Clip that off, Lee. Please. I'll say it again if you need it clearer. Say it again. Like, I'm just being honest. I'm too good for frozen pizza. Go full screen on Dan, single shot. Here we go. I've aged out of frozen pizza and I'm too good for frozen pizza. There you go. It does not meet the status or the bar of pizza and so I will not eat it. Sorry. Do you have it in your house? I don't. No. Absolutely not. We have frozen pizza at least once. I literally just got, I live for it.

[00:18:23] I literally just got groceries for time in the snow and I did not buy frozen pizza, which is a classic when I was in my 20s. We had another snowstorm coming up? Well, when I did it last week. Oh. When I did it last week for our snowstorm, I went and when I was 30, I bought frozen pizza if it was threatening snow. I probably haven't had a frozen pizza in five years. Wow. Legitimately. What a run. It's like the magic with those 50s. I will say I tried it for the Super Bowl thing. Vidgo. Yeah. Vidgo.

[00:18:53] Well, we don't talk about it. We don't talk about Vidgo because it's Philo. That's right. And I just, it's got to be a rising crust. Right. It's got to be a rising crust. The rest of them are just like cardboard. Like it's a, it's a definite. Brandon, I like them. Also, Costco frozen pizza is really good too. That, the made, the take and bake? No, that's not what I'm talking about. Okay. I'm talking about the one that comes in four. Oh, I've never had that. I've never had that. Yeah, the take and bake's good too. The take and bake's not frozen. In my opinion, that's like pizza pizza. That's like actual pizza. Pizza pizza. Oh, as long as you describe it as that. Yeah.

[00:19:23] It's my opinion. I'm just getting my opinion here. The take and bake's fine. He's not too good for the take and bake. I'm not. There's nothing going to be. He's not going to say take and bake on his tombstone. Pizza. 10 years, take and bake's off. Yeah, take and bake's out. Fresh or nothing. We'll do an update episode, everybody. We'll talk about that. Let's get to the hot take as we share our thoughts on this episode. We don't hold back. I mean, we already know Dan's, but we'll start with you, Ryan. Ryan, what do you think about this episode? I hope Ryan helps me with his hot take.

[00:19:52] I'm not trying to put any pressure on you, Ryan, but I'm hoping you, I think you're going to be with me on this. Well, I will say that this has a lot of positives and negatives. If I had to do my notes over, I would have organized them better into a list of positives and a list of negatives. They're kind of all sporadic. I will say my top line thought on this was, I don't think you'll agree with this, Dan, judging off of how you're approaching this. I thought this was an easy and quick watch. Maybe I'm just still comparing everything.

[00:20:20] Both of these episodes have been exponentially better than anything we got in season two. So maybe I'm still grading on a curve and grading on the fact that I just really did not like season two. But this was a fun episode, and I thought there was more good than bad. Some of the bad is that a lot of this feels anticlimactic. We built up to two seasons, 20 episodes of the idea of Jacob coming home, finding Jacob for a good part of season two.

[00:20:48] We thought that adult Jacob wasn't Jacob. We're just idiots and we're wrong, but we didn't like that. We have all these theories about Del and the pond, and now she just knows and it's kind of already old hat. She'll mention it here and there, but we thought that was the big turning point of any episode or season in which it happens, and it was a two-second reference in the premiere episode here. So all of that feels disjointed. I found myself a little more engaged in the family history stuff,

[00:21:18] but I do worry that that that's just becoming like, I mean, we see Vic Augustine's name on the phone, and all of our first reactions is, like I didn't even know Elliot's last name was Augustine, if I'm being honest. So I don't know if that stuff's great. I hope they correct this in future weeks, but Jacob is coming from several hundred years in the past, and there's not a lot of culture shock to him being in 2024. He's just on the farm and having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches his mommy makes, you know?

[00:21:48] So, yeah, like, I mean, fair. It doesn't make any sense that as this continues to evolve and Alice and Kat are just casually going to 1974, that Del, I know I mentioned this last week, I'll try not to harp on things over and over, but like she has no temptation to go back to 1974 and see her, like, I get that. So stupid. Yeah, listen, I want to be fair. I could understand her character's motivation is like, this pond is a menace, you know?

[00:22:17] Sure, I got my baby back, but it took my baby away, and, you know, you two are risking your lives. Let's just stay away. But there's even just one scene where she's like, well, it would be mighty interesting to see young me and, like, you know. Yeah. Just, you know, human nature. Yeah. So I don't love that. Listen, I think, but on the positive side, I think the teenage actors they cast in the 70s are all really good performers. It's a shame that Rick's already gone. I really liked him. Rest in peace, obviously. Yeah, may he rest.

[00:22:45] And I like the runner that Alice can't always help but fall in love in a different time. Yeah. But yeah, listen, I still think there was more good than bad, even though I harped on the negatives. But again, maybe I'm grading on a curve. I'm thrilled. I'm thrilled to be here. I'm thrilled to be back. We're back, baby. I'm thrilled to be in the 70s. I think it's going to make for a fun ride. And most importantly, I'm thrilled that Naria's second of this episode took place in the 1800s. Not to say it won't be back,

[00:23:15] but it's just good to get a breather. It's good to just kind of rest for a moment and enjoy the 70s and the 20, 24, whatever year it is in this show in the present. I really enjoyed it. Overall, really well cast. And I'm intrigued. I'm intrigued by some of the things that they're setting up in the 70s. I'm intrigued by the relationship

[00:23:45] between Evelyn and Colton. I'm intrigued by what's the deal with, just kind of the way that they're talking. I'm intrigued by the introduction. What's the deal with the way that they're talking? Like, it was just like some secret, like things that they're like. Coded language. Yes. Intrigued by 70s Dell. And lots to enjoy here.

[00:24:13] There was like a heavy confidence that we, like, I know like a lot of people have gone back and rewatched and like have their family tree lined up. A lot of confidence that we would remember Elliot's dad's name and how it all, or even like, even Evelyn, like I'm still kind of foggy on who Evelyn is. And then like, I know we've met her and I looked her up on IMDb and I'm like, I vaguely remember.

[00:24:42] So like my memory is just not as sharp as I think is needed to fully get this episode, but it's sharp enough to know that I had a real good time. Dano? Yeah. Contrary to popular belief of the two people that think they already know my take, I'm fairly conflicted on this episode. I think the best thing I can say is, is that we do have some new threads that I think we could, we do care about or we could care about throughout the season.

[00:25:10] And I didn't feel like we had that at all in season two. So I think to Ryan's point, it's better based on the fact that we can start to theorize about some things. Whereas in season two, it was just bad. Like who Colton, like we're at the end of this episode and it's like, Colton is heat. Like clearly he is going in the pond who can go in the pond, who can't, why do we keep getting sent back to this one time in 1974? You know, you have Dell in the picture. It looks like there's a,

[00:25:39] some sort of love triangle maybe there. How did it all work out? We know that you can't change the future. They've established that already. So that's a very important part of this. Um, but the flip side of it is this last week, one Ryan Popola gave my favorite hot take that he's ever given about the way home. And he said that heroes in season three tried to basically just copy season one. And that's why it was a disaster. Well, if you watch this episode

[00:26:07] and didn't have a striking suspicion that it's the exact same as season one, I don't know what to tell you. Alice goes back, ends up in the yard. There's a beach party. There's a scenic coils. It's, it's literally all at sometimes feels like shot for shot. A C the season one storyline, but sub out 1999 sub in 1974. There's a, there's a young cute boy. She's in love with in a different time. They're on the beach,

[00:26:37] hanging out, drinking. They're in the yard. It's the same thing. It's not new. It's not different. It's the same thing. It is like, unfortunately, and Orion's words were literally in my head. I was like, they realized season two went too far off the beaten path. So they're getting back. And you know what? Good for them for getting back to the storylines, but shame on them for basically recreating the same season again,

[00:27:05] because Ryan, did you not feel that at all? Uh, there's definitely some self parody going on. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, could I make an argument and really depends on how episodes three, four or five, et cetera, ago, like, can I make an argument that going back to those familiar scenes and they're trying to juxtapose certain events, you know, we even find out she shows up right before a car accident that killed someone, Ryan. Sure. Like, I don't disagree with you. It's, it is,

[00:27:34] it is criminal. Like they should, they should probably be arrested for self plagiarism. Like it is criminal. What's going on here. And it reeks of, we don't have a new idea. And that's very scary to me, even though I am excited about some of these threats. Now I will tell you two things very quickly, hard out for me, hard out for me. If Colton can travel into the future, passes death, we've not confirmed that. But if Colton Landry can travel past 2000 or 99,

[00:28:04] whenever the car accident was into the future, hard out for me, hard out for me. We've not established he can do that. Correct? No. Okay. Maybe he's not dead. Hard, hard out. He is. We saw him die. It's not Jacob. We saw him die in the car. Cats holding him. We saw him die hard out. If he can travel past 2000, absolutely. One hundred percent. Not hard out for me. Now at this point, I said it last episode as a human though, him coming back as a horse is still on the table. Colton horse is totally fine. We're fine with the horse.

[00:28:34] Colton Nicole. And then second of all, we, I basically said this last week, but I'm cementing it. You will not be able to win me back. Cause right now there's some things that I think could win me back. You will not be able to win me back. If Dell's note about this pond, it is, we are getting, we are stretching just the basic strains of credibility of just like people living that you wouldn't want to just walk down and give the pond a look and, and to act like I just,

[00:29:02] if she knows about the pond or if Colton can travel past his death, heart out. I'm here to watch it. Like I was, I'm here to watch ride. And when calls the heart at that point, that is what this is. Um, but as it stands right now, there's a chance, there's a chance we can get this thing back on track. And I think they're headed in the right direction in a lot of ways. Um, including Elliot and cat moving in together. There we go. Uh, it's time for all the fields where we talk about what's in this episode.

[00:29:32] Gave us feels of any sorts, Ryan. Thanks, brand. Sadie Laflame snow. Anytime she grabs the mic and sings, man, it's, it's good stuff. Yeah. Yeah. She's done. And young Colton is too. Uh, you know, they, Sam is, uh, I've done the math.

[00:30:00] Sam's the best looking man for his age per capita. Per capita. You won't find one better looking than Sam. Not per capita. Not per capita. And I think that's an important caveat there. I, where did they find them? Where'd they find this man? In a lab somewhere. cause listen, we're doing a thing. We're smoothies. We're smoothies. We don't have a prayer. We're not doing like genetics just wasn't on our side. Trying to cut back on sweets. Sure.

[00:30:29] There's nothing I could do. No amount of supplements that I could take at this point in my life where I stand a chance to look as good as Sam does at his age per capita, Dan, um, per capita. You can't say it enough. I think that's the key there. No cap per cap. No cap per capita. No cap per capita. Uh, mine's pretty basic, but I do want to highlight because we're, we're still in new Hallmark. And I want to highlight as someone that's been watching more Hallmark than I ever thought I would, uh, before seven years ago,

[00:30:59] that we did have a move in request and acceptance by two unmarried people. And that is huge. That is cataclysmic in the world of Hallmark. And they did it. They did it. And they acted like it was normal. And that was very, very impressive. So shout out, shout out. Uh, let's take a break. We'll come back. We'll get to the way. What? And the, whoa, sink or swim. Sink or swim. How'd you not know who Vic Ogston was?

[00:31:33] I love my friends first, my family second, bacon third. Yeah. As every good red blooded American would. Friends first, family second, bacon third. Bacon's good for me. Uh, let's get to the way. What? That's what we're talking about. What in this episode made us go? Wait, what? Ryan, you pointed out some real brutal exposition. When we meet Rick and Vic, I'm going to point out another brutal moment. Uh, in that same scene, I believe, uh, I believe it's Rick says, Hey, it's the summer of 74.

[00:32:02] It's going to be slamming just because Alice didn't know it was 1974 necessarily. So we had to make sure that we all knew it was 1970. I have written down, shout out to Rick Augustine for just coolly explaining the plot to Alice. Uh, he calls his brother by his full name. He's like, Hey, watch it. Vic Augustine, the third who lives at one Oh six. And then he says this, of course, it's going to be fun. It's the summer of 1974, bro. You're not Ken Burns.

[00:32:32] You're an actual character in this thing. It was wild. She could have figured that out with any number of context clues. And instead, all slick Rick is telling her all the things she needs to know. It was crazy. But also for us, the audience, like the seventies has a very particular aesthetic. We could just tell. I think we can do it. Late sixties, early seventies. We got it. Show us a newspaper, like a concert poster or something. Yeah. Oh, did I ever tell you about the time that I would get tomorrow's newspaper delivered? Dude.

[00:33:02] Did you have a cat too? Yeah. Yeah. It was wild. It was wild. What'd you do with that? What happened? I would, I would try to help where I could, uh, you know, you didn't gamble. Not once. No, I, you know, I'm trying not to bring, I'm trying not to bring today's problems into tomorrow. You know what I'm saying? Did you have a buddy that was trying to convince you to like gamble or do anything like weird? Yeah. Yeah. I, you know, but you know, I, I, you know, I persevered on. Wow. Man. What a time. Yeah. And now I'm here with you guys. You could change.

[00:33:31] You could change like the, what was in tomorrow's newspaper is not, I do. It is printed, but not. Unlike the way home, you can change the future. Right. Yeah, exactly. And it was, it was wild. I look back on those times fondly. Um, so we were talking about, uh, how, uh, you know, Alice, you know, accidentally. So may have had a thing for, Colton, but what they, what the show for a moment, but no, but what the show did say out, I, I made sure that this is what happened.

[00:34:02] Alice is talking to cat. It's in, uh, it's in the diner there. Uh, you know, uh, and she goes, did you see Colton to which cat says? Yeah. Oh, he was perfect. Oh, I didn't know what to make of that. It was, I don't know what the way home was going for there, but what they got was super icky. Yeah. Super duper. Like that, like, uh, like, uh, she committed and like the, the,

[00:34:29] the best way to take that line would be to actually not commit. Yeah. Yeah. He was perfect. Like, you know, it's like, you know, or maybe be like, Hey, maybe we rewrite. Can we get one more? Yeah. Yeah. Um, so there are now, uh, listen, I know we get some flack for, uh, saying that, uh, like, how does Dell, you know, how does no one remember Alice from 99? And I understand people's theories. I don't know if I subscribe to them, but I, I, I listen. I try to, I try to listen, but there are now two timelines, not guaranteed,

[00:34:59] but clearly seventies. Dell is going to meet Alice to some way, shape or form. So there are now going to be two timelines where Dell has hung out, seen Alice look exactly how she looks in 2020. Whatever. It has no recollection. I'm going to call my shot right now. By the end of this season, Dell is going to reveal that she knows everything. And I'm just telling you right now, be prepared because I might set this room on fire. I think the only way that works, I think the only, and I,

[00:35:29] this is, this is me being very generous is that Dell has time traveled so many times throughout her life that her mind is scrambled and she, you know, like, you know, has, yeah, I thought of a way that it did work, which is she time traveled to actually make sure Colton ended up with her. She's the bad guy, the whole thing. Now, maybe I still, I'm going to be real pissed off, but if she is the villain of this thing, we're talking like that, uh,

[00:35:59] twist at the end of a sleepy hollow, which at the end of season one, a sleepy hollow where the, the, the nice old guy turns out to be like Satan or something like that. I just remember it being awesome that this, this, this would be my, my, not awesome. Satan and frozen pizza, same boat. I'm too good for. Wow. Wow. No testimony. Yeah. Amen. That's right. Amen. Uh, is that it? I mean,

[00:36:28] he didn't even think the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in his tombstone. I have one more. I'll make a quick, um, Casey very well, maybe the one that threw Alice into the pond, but whether they were, um, but especially if they weren't, uh, is Casey ever actually going to be in the show? Because we hear a lot about Casey, but this even happened last season. They're never in the show. Yeah. People talk about Casey. Yeah. Like where is Casey hanging out?

[00:36:58] Like they get mentioned a lot. They don't see Casey ever. And so it's, it's almost like somebody who time travels. It's like when Alice is gone for a long period of time. And then when they, when she finally showed up again in the nineties, we're like, Hey, where you been? You know, it's like, I hope that's what it is brand. Cause otherwise, yeah. Yeah. If Casey's just hanging out of the archives by, by themselves, just kind of like, you know, doinking around, you know, just looking at archives. Just me, call me when you need me.

[00:37:29] obviously shout out to Rick Augustine for letting us know the year. Letting us know everything. Shout out to the guy who, the, the hippie guy who runs coil coil coil. His name's coil. Hey coil. He runs coils. If you can believe it. He, he has many calendar on his dashboard to keep track of the day that it is. And also in case you pick up time traveling hitchhikers like cat. Cause then they can look at right. It's a dashboard calendar. The dashboard calendar in your car. You love it. I love to see it.

[00:38:00] Also shout out to Alice, who like all teenage girls between 2023 and 2025 does know the song summer breeze by seals and crofts. Um, a song that as a music lover myself, we all know it. I Googled cause I didn't recognize the song. Um, but she did. And I love that. And that's great. Listen, maybe it's a song that since, since Colton's saying it, he may be saying it for cat and cat then,

[00:38:28] and has since played it for Alice, uh, because it was a song that her dad loved. There are ways to get there, but it is summer briefs by seals and crofts. Is he were looking for there? the last one, not least, we talked about the casting of the seventies and now they did a good job. Uh, Dell was always going to be a tough person to cast because Dell is one of one. Yes. Um, she's the best actor on the television. 100%. Um,

[00:38:58] who they got, it does. I can see it. Yeah. Curly hair. Um, and this actor is doing their best Southern as a Canadian, as a Canadian. Um, but what I hear is that somehow over time, Dell Southern accents has gotten stronger in her older age. That's right. In Canada. Despite living in Canada since she was, she was a teenager, um, because she is doing a Southern accent,

[00:39:27] but it is not nearly as thick as, as it is, uh, as an adult. And that's impressive. You know, you always, you move away from your, your hometown and your, uh, hometown accent gets stronger. The more that you're away from it. Everybody knows it. Everybody loves it. Uh, Dano. Uh, yeah. Um, speaking of accents, I know that Vic Augustine is from the town that the Landry's are from. Uh, but he must be from the Southern,

[00:39:55] region of that town called Mobile, Alabama, because he is more Southern than Dell. I don't know what happened with his character, but the guy that it plays adult Vic Augustine has decided he's going to play at Southern, even though we all know he grew up in Canada and it's weird. I also know that we can say things we don't mean in the heat of the moment. Lord knows I have things that I've said I'd want to have back, but can you imagine Elliot? Who's like in the first episode, Hey, go to the pond. Don't go to the pond.

[00:40:25] I just want you in my life. I want you to be whoever you want to be. And cat saying, I choose you. And then Elliot going to the pond with cat and going, let me go with you. And her turning around to him and going, I don't want you to come with me because I don't want to have to take care of you on top of everything else. Dear Lord, that is brutal. Like you just eviscerated that dude, like fully eviscerated him for no good reason. Like,

[00:40:56] like, like you could, there's so many things you could be like, Hey, I just, I feel like I need to do this one alone. Or like, I think we're going to run into my dad and it's going to be a whole thing. Can you just let me do this one? You basically just like, you basically just said you don't have any respect for him. That's what you said in one sentence. And it was, I couldn't believe she said it. And she does apologize later, but I was shocked to find Dan. Go ahead. She, she apologized, but it's not like a big plot point. It is. No, it's like, it's just a throwaway. Like if you're going to do that,

[00:41:25] you would think that like, this is a three episode arc. It's one. Yes. It's one of these little things that makes me think we're, we may not be in the best of hands here because they needed something to keep him here. And they just said, what if cat is one turns mean to 11? What if she just cranks that dial past where it goes and is the meanest possible? Like, and I just don't under, it doesn't. And you're right. That would be something Elliot would be like pretty hurt about for a long time. And he's just like, yeah, whatever. It's a big deal.

[00:41:55] Especially given the fact that his dad wasn't present because didn't want to deal with him. Yeah. Um, yeah, exactly. That's like all of the trauma in his life is, dad doesn't respect you. Is based in that. Girlfriend doesn't respect you. So that could be why they said it, but that's tough. Two other real small ones, just nitpicking. Coyle says he moved to Canada to dodge the draft, which is accurate. All that timeline lines up. But then he says in this,

[00:42:21] he says in this never ending war that is currently going on as though he is protesting it while the Vietnam War did last in 1975. Technically all United States combat troops were removed by 1973 because of protests. So in 74 lookout in 74, I'm not sure exactly how much protesting for that war. There was plenty of protesting for that war would have been happening. Maybe in Canada it was different, but I doubt it. Uh, and then lastly, uh,

[00:42:51] Delilah Dell shows up on the beach for the first time and is introduced as Delilah and not a single person says, Hey there, Delilah. And I felt like that was a missed opportunity that you, you just never going to have back. So there's that. Uh, it's time for, uh, sink or swim is where we talk about, uh, things that are sinking or swimming, et cetera. You get it. Uh, right. Don't ever think it pretty self-explanatory. Um, I don't want to lament the past too much. I said last week that I'm not going to do that,

[00:43:20] but unless I think I'm sinking brand, I think, right. Cause unless somehow all of these flashbacks with kid, Jacob were shot during the season one era, which I think is impossible. I, I don't think there's any way. I think they were all shot very recently during the filming of season three. It's just a bummer because young Jacob's actor doesn't look that much older than he did in season one. That's right.

[00:43:46] And I just feel like none of us are really sold on adult Jacob. We were all so bummed out last season that cat finding Jacob. It was with this person that we didn't recognize that she didn't recognize. There wasn't the emotional attachment there. And if you're telling me that young Jacob two years after season one is going to look pretty much the way he looked in season one. I think there was a lot more stuff. I think there was a lot more stuff we could have done with the actor, that version of the character in season three. That would have,

[00:44:16] at least for me, I think I speak for all three of us would have been a lot more interesting than what we're getting. So that's a bummer. I think I, the more I'm doing this this week, it's more of a bummer to me than I realized that the Jacob storyline is super anticlimactic. I think it was the whole premise of the show. It was the whole premise of the show. And now it's just like, well, let's, let's keep, let's keep ponding. But I was ponded up per capita. So, uh, I believe in, right? This is good. This is going to be a, uh,

[00:44:46] I don't really even know where to, where to put the, how, if it's a sink or swim. Cause again, I don't really understand the segment I made up. Um, Colton isn't cat's dad. So they do. I'm just, I'm just going to say it and I'm going to throw it out of the world. I'm going to call my shot and say Colton's not cat's dad. I think that he is. So that's a wild one. Okay.

[00:45:16] So, so, uh, there's cat's dad. Do we know? I don't know yet. I don't know. I haven't gotten there. Is it Roy from the archives? Remember Roy? If everybody, if everybody is able, like let there's, there's potential here. But I, you, you said something while we were watching this show about your prop. Do you know? Really? Really? Okay. Um, I'm just going to throw it out there. Dan, go ahead. Great. That's a good one for this one for sure. Uh,

[00:45:46] yeah, we're watching in real time. I mean, like, I guess you could, you could have something there. Um, I, I, I kind of did my sink or swim in my hot take, but I think I'm sinking because I think sooner or later, we're going to find out that Colton can travel to the future and a past his death. And I think there's a lot of beauty and I've waxed poetic ish about this before, but there's a lot of beauty in a time travel show where you can't change the future because what you're learning how to do is live in, in the present.

[00:46:16] That's what you're really learning. You're not learning. You're not like on an adventure as much as you are learning about life. You're, you're having a coming of age story through the ages and there's a lot of beauty there that can be had. But if Colton can travel past the date of his death, a lot of that is kind of ruined for me. And so I'm sinking, I'm sinking this week and I'm sorry about it. Uh, do we have a, uh, uh, a thing this week? Do we do like an email or something? We don't do anything. I can't keep track of shows.

[00:46:45] We're doing two shows at once. We used to, you know what? We used to, we used to wrestle him to the ground, but we don't do that. That was years ago. That was years ago. We're not going to do that. Uh, well, we did it everybody. Congratulations to us. The good news is we're going to be back next week. we are. Next week. Not too soon. Uh, so, uh, so come on, come on back. Will you? Um, until then, maybe the first to wish. Hey there, Delilah. Merry Christmas. The Hallmarks of Bramble Jam podcast is produced by Aaron Shea.
