[00:00:00] Hi, I'm Brandon I love Christmas movies in Norway! I'm Dan and I despise Christmas movies in Norway.

[00:00:11] I'm Alonzo and I stand the fjords and this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast!

[00:00:17] Deck The Hallmark is his podcast!

[00:00:22] Brandon and Fin Toast is podcast! We hope you like this dolly podcast!

[00:00:35] Well, hello everybody!

[00:00:38] It's great to be here today!

[00:00:40] Certainly is. It feels like we haven't done this in forever.

[00:00:43] I know. But here we are today.

[00:00:45] I'm excited to be talking about a theatrical Christmas movie that we miss.

[00:00:51] We don't get to do this very often so it's very exciting.

[00:00:54] This one is technically in Europe. It debuted on streaming in the US.

[00:01:00] It never came here theatrally?

[00:01:02] No, I was on the lookout for it and weirdly enough somehow I got on the list of some publicist in London.

[00:01:09] They'll send me something like, oh, cool!

[00:01:11] Oh no!

[00:01:13] You can always tell because they would say in cinemas and out in theaters.

[00:01:17] And it's always they put the number of the date in front of the month instead of after so it's like that's your tip off that we're not getting it.

[00:01:23] That's right.

[00:01:24] We did not get this movie in US theaters much to our sugar in because I...well, we'll talk about it.

[00:01:30] It would have been weirder if it wasn't theaters to me.

[00:01:32] I'm not saying I didn't like the movie. I'm saying like it didn't feel like...it felt like in this weird middle ground between a theatrical and a theatre.

[00:01:38] I had thought that maybe it had because around Christmas time you kind of get some of these type of movies.

[00:01:47] Sure.

[00:01:48] That pop up like there was the Grinch Horror movie that made it to theaters.

[00:01:52] Right.

[00:01:53] There was a wonderful knife that made it to theaters so it just kind of like happens around the whole world.

[00:01:58] That one with Chrissy Metts called like, creature was stirring or something.

[00:02:02] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:02:03] So I think that's why I thought that maybe it had but nevertheless, it is what we are talking about.

[00:02:09] I'm sorry.

[00:02:10] I'm sorry.

[00:02:11] I do my research by just asking a lot so he's the best Google that I know when it comes to this type of stuff.

[00:02:18] Alonzo, you're having a busy time right now because you are recording the audiobook for your upcoming book.

[00:02:26] How exciting for you.

[00:02:28] I am and I'll tell you, there is nothing quite as exhausting as spending six hours in a small room reading your own copy.

[00:02:37] And also reading your own copy out loud is a guaranteed way to make you think you've made it terrible to take and you need to redo everything.

[00:02:45] So that's been my experience anyway.

[00:02:47] I don't know what other authors have been doing their audiobooks but I'm sure it's fine.

[00:02:52] I'm my own worst critic.

[00:02:54] It'll be, you know, pick it up when it comes out in May Hollywood prize.

[00:02:58] Oh, I'm going to be listening to it on Audible.

[00:03:00] You know that I am.

[00:03:01] I'm also going to pick up a print copy and I encourage everyone to do both obviously.

[00:03:05] Obviously.

[00:03:06] But yeah, you kid me the soothing sounds of Alonzo D'Araldi reading.

[00:03:10] You might even listen to that one at regular speed.

[00:03:13] Well, everything is a 1.7 for me on Audible.

[00:03:20] I think what you want me to read it at one time?

[00:03:24] Well, it's just a lot of slowdown.

[00:03:26] That's what you should do a slower recording version for.

[00:03:31] It's about in the studio for another 30 hours for that question about audio recording.

[00:03:36] Alonzo, how many times do you need another take?

[00:03:41] Like is it one of those things where as long as you're not messing up, one take is good or they constantly asking you,

[00:03:47] you need to read that line over again.

[00:03:50] I mean, yes, if I'm doing not terribly, they'll just let it go through but very often it's like,

[00:03:57] can you slow down and say that, pronounce that word again?

[00:04:01] We kind of lost it there somewhere.

[00:04:03] I do a lot of, I'm starting it.

[00:04:06] I'm starting the sentence.

[00:04:08] I'm starting the sentence and trying to get all the way through it.

[00:04:12] That's just me making myself do multiple takes.

[00:04:17] The idea of editing audio for an audiobook sounds like my least favorite job.

[00:04:23] If you had to ask me to do a job, I would hate forever it's taking all of these audio files and making it sound seamless.

[00:04:31] That just gives me the mood to think about it.

[00:04:34] Thank heaven for professionals because it's the kind of thing where I can actually stop in the middle of a sentence and I'll pause for a second.

[00:04:40] As long as they pick up like after a comma, basically, they can splice it together and so give it a go.

[00:04:46] Now is there someone like?

[00:04:47] Thank you for all of that effort.

[00:04:48] Is there someone following along with you to make sure that you said what you're supposed to say?

[00:04:54] Sometimes when you read it, you know what you're trying to say and at least I do.

[00:04:58] I know what I'm trying to say and I miss a very brand-sense question.

[00:05:02] I miss an A.

[00:05:04] You know what you read it doesn't make sense.

[00:05:06] I mean, thankfully they're not, I'm not married to every word.

[00:05:12] So I'm allowed to like, I can change a verb tense if I feel like I didn't quite nail it.

[00:05:16] One thing I learned that I never thought about before but if ever in a book you write something like in these pages blah, blah, blah,

[00:05:23] you have to change that to like in this audiobook because this is its own separate thing and there are no pages in it.

[00:05:30] Yeah, we're learning so much.

[00:05:33] And the countdown's on Hollywood Pride.

[00:05:36] That is what the date is in May correct?

[00:05:38] May 14th.

[00:05:39] Yes.

[00:05:40] Audio book, Kindle, bookbook, the whole nine yards and yeah even if you do get the audio book,

[00:05:46] you'll want to get I think the Kindle or the physical book because first of all it's gorgeous.

[00:05:51] The photos that CCM has dug up for this thing are just beautiful.

[00:05:54] A size we talking.

[00:05:56] It's a coffee table book.

[00:06:00] It's got a dust jacket, the whole thing.

[00:06:02] And then also there's sort of some listy stuff in the back of each chapter of more people and more movies

[00:06:08] that I don't do in the audio book because it would just be like a list of names and titles.

[00:06:13] So for the full for the full Shabang you really want to know are you doing a book release slash Alonzo's birthday party?

[00:06:20] That I should I know it is my that is the week of my birthday.

[00:06:24] I am taking it to as many places as I can.

[00:06:29] Love it.

[00:06:30] Watch this space.

[00:06:31] I will be hopefully coming somewhere near wherever you are to sign books, maybe screen a film with somebody.

[00:06:37] I don't know but I'm just trying to get out that green bill perhaps we're not going to maybe even maybe that green bill.

[00:06:44] Yeah, that green bill.

[00:06:45] I love to hear that.

[00:06:46] You ever feel like he's about to get too big for us every day?

[00:06:48] Yeah, every day.

[00:06:49] I do.

[00:06:50] Since he called in in 2018, brand.

[00:06:54] Who else is going to give me an excuse to watch and talk about this stuff?

[00:06:58] I asked you we do have that.

[00:06:59] Let's talk about there's something in the barn.

[00:07:02] There's something.

[00:07:03] Come on.

[00:07:04] I don't know who's on necessarily me.

[00:07:07] I don't know why I said.

[00:07:10] There's something in the barn.

[00:07:13] A jacks would have laughed at that.

[00:07:14] She would have.

[00:07:15] She would.

[00:07:16] She'd be the first.

[00:07:17] There's something in the barn which is odd right now.

[00:07:21] You can watch on the Netflix and is trending on the Netflix.

[00:07:25] I watched it.

[00:07:26] I was like number eight.

[00:07:27] I better leave right now.

[00:07:28] So congratulations.

[00:07:29] We're not the only ones in March watching Chris's movie.

[00:07:32] Praise God.

[00:07:33] premiered on 23 September 2023.

[00:07:37] Adventastic fest.

[00:07:38] Ooh, I heard that that is fantastic in Austin, Texas.

[00:07:44] Didn't see a coming.

[00:07:45] Oh, they were.

[00:07:46] That's what I was.

[00:07:47] That's right.

[00:07:48] I was the rock.

[00:07:50] And released in Norway by the Scandinavian film distribution on 10 November 2023.

[00:07:57] And then the United States we got it one.

[00:07:59] I think we're good if you just want to start whenever.

[00:08:04] I mainly just wanted to talk about fantastic films.

[00:08:07] A festival I didn't know existed but would that be?

[00:08:09] It was shown in Austin.

[00:08:10] It's a genre fest.

[00:08:11] People love it.

[00:08:12] If it was shown in Austin, that's when we got it.

[00:08:14] Fantastic.

[00:08:15] All right, go.

[00:08:16] No.

[00:08:17] Came to streaming.

[00:08:18] Okay.

[00:08:19] Whatever.

[00:08:20] Fantastic fest.

[00:08:21] No, I don't think it's just your thing.

[00:08:22] The movie kicks off and there's a, believe it or not something in the barn.

[00:08:26] What?

[00:08:27] Making us someone in the barn.

[00:08:28] This guy comes out of the barn.

[00:08:30] He's got a chain and he connects the chain to his big old tractor.

[00:08:34] The tractor though is not working.

[00:08:35] It seems that some wires have been cut.

[00:08:38] And he seems very committed to get rid of this barn.

[00:08:43] So he pours gasoline all throughout the barn.

[00:08:46] Then a baby stroller comes rolling in with a giant bear trap in it.

[00:08:51] He tries to light the fire but the lighter is not working.

[00:08:56] He then hears something in the barn so he decides now is a good time for me to climb to the second story of this barn.

[00:09:01] Suddenly he gets hit by a giant ball of fire which sends him flying out the window and now he's on fire.

[00:09:09] Tough day for that guy.

[00:09:10] Cuts to this family they are driving through the Norwegian mountains.

[00:09:15] They immediately get scared by a couple of mists.

[00:09:19] A couple of mists?

[00:09:20] A couple of mists.

[00:09:21] A couple of mists.

[00:09:22] Mousen.

[00:09:23] The mountain mists.

[00:09:25] He's got mists.

[00:09:26] They arrive at this house and we find out that he inherited it from his uncle who, I don't know if you know he died.

[00:09:35] The house is beautiful.

[00:09:37] Then we see the barn in the backyard and between you and me I do think there might be something in that barn.

[00:09:45] More on that soon.

[00:09:46] The family is made up of Bill and Carol, they are the parents and Lucas and Nora are the teenage kids.

[00:09:52] Bill has plans to fix up the barn and have people stay in it like an Airbnb type thing.

[00:09:59] Lucas is poking around at the barn and sees a bear trap stroller.

[00:10:04] Maybe you've heard about it and some other random things that kind of start shifting around.

[00:10:08] He runs out of the barn and he says to his parents, there's something in the barn!

[00:10:14] They shrug it off.

[00:10:15] I'm sure it's nothing.

[00:10:16] The next day they head into town and everybody is very skeptical of this family and very nervous about somebody living at this haunted barn.

[00:10:25] Lucas learns about something called a barn elf.

[00:10:29] Apparently if you treat a barn elf well, it's going to be nice to you.

[00:10:33] Give him a barn elf a cookie.

[00:10:35] Yes!

[00:10:36] Yes!

[00:10:37] If you ask for a bowl of porridge.

[00:10:39] That's exactly right.

[00:10:40] You know the story.

[00:10:41] Stop me if you've heard of him.

[00:10:42] Give him a bowl of porridge.

[00:10:43] If you don't treat it nice stuff.

[00:10:45] I won't saw your face tonight.

[00:10:46] They're going to be very mean.

[00:10:48] They have a very nice side and a very mean side.

[00:10:51] Do you want to be on the nice side?

[00:10:54] Lucas assumes we have a barn elf.

[00:10:57] What other exploits he buys into the barn elf thing immediately.

[00:11:01] He goes to the barn to introduce himself to the elf and sure enough, and a barn elf comes out.

[00:11:07] Takes the cookie and he's going to town on this cookie.

[00:11:12] He loves it.

[00:11:13] Lucas then gives him another but bumps into the ladder which spooks the elf and he disappears.

[00:11:19] He does not like sound.

[00:11:20] But it appears that he is on the elf's good side because the elf clears to smell and then

[00:11:26] asks for some more cookies.

[00:11:28] The guy really loves cookies.

[00:11:30] His dad though decorates the house for Christmas and Lucas is like, this is bad news.

[00:11:35] The barn elf doesn't have three things you know.

[00:11:39] He doesn't like lights.

[00:11:40] He doesn't like noise.

[00:11:41] He doesn't like change.

[00:11:43] These lights are all of those things.

[00:11:45] That's right.

[00:11:46] It's like, okay whatever.

[00:11:47] But the next day they come out and all the decorations they are destroyed.

[00:11:51] Lucas is like, told you of barn elf, they decide to throw a house party with noise to help

[00:11:58] make some friends.

[00:11:59] The barn elf is not happy.

[00:12:01] In the barn.

[00:12:02] In the barn.

[00:12:03] The whole thing.

[00:12:04] It's a barn party.

[00:12:05] Everybody gets super drunk at the party and the barn elf is just watching from underneath.

[00:12:12] It's unfortunate for him because he ends up getting puked on which is really unfortunate.

[00:12:19] Insult to injury for the barn elf.

[00:12:22] It really is.

[00:12:23] We've all been to that party.

[00:12:25] We sure have.

[00:12:26] Lucas.

[00:12:27] Somebody puked on the barn elf.

[00:12:29] I had a nickel.

[00:12:30] Oh boy.

[00:12:31] Lucas tries to put an end to the party but it doesn't work.

[00:12:35] In the middle of the night, the elf breaks into their house, tears apart the kitchen.

[00:12:39] Bill tries to find out who's making all this ruckus and ends up getting pushed down the stairs

[00:12:44] to the basement and the elf locks the door.

[00:12:47] Then Carol comes down to see what the heck is going on in the elf is about to attack her.

[00:12:52] But Lucas comes downstairs and turns on the light which obviously causes the elf to scurry off.

[00:12:58] Lucas decides to make the elf some porridge because as Dan so perfectly said, that's the next step.

[00:13:05] That's the next step.

[00:13:06] Christmas Eve porridge.

[00:13:07] That's exactly right.

[00:13:08] This makes the elf happy.

[00:13:09] That night for dinner, his dad made this disgusting Norwegian dish and no one liked it.

[00:13:15] So being hungry, Bill decides he's going to just eat the porridge in the fridge.

[00:13:19] And Lucas is like WTF dad.

[00:13:21] That porridge is for the barn elf.

[00:13:23] And he's like, all right man, sorry, whatever.

[00:13:26] Lucas decides I'll bring the nasty dinner to the barn elf.

[00:13:30] Maybe he just likes any food.

[00:13:32] He does not.

[00:13:33] The elf hates this food.

[00:13:34] It is Christmas Eve.

[00:13:36] And Bill is hired a guy to come to the house and play Santa.

[00:13:41] When the Santa guy arrives, he sees the elf in the distance and assumes that it's Lucas.

[00:13:46] So he goes by the barn to see what Lucas is doing.

[00:13:49] It's not Lucas.

[00:13:50] It's the barn elf.

[00:13:51] He starts banging on the barn with a sledgehammer.

[00:13:55] And then he turns around and Santa is like, oh wow, you're not Lucas at all.

[00:13:59] The elf hits the barn one more time causing an icicle to fall down and impale his head.

[00:14:04] And then he hangs in with Christmas lights.

[00:14:07] Tough day for Santa.

[00:14:09] Bill wants to know what's keeping Santa so long.

[00:14:11] So he goes outside to see maybe he's here or whatever.

[00:14:14] And he discovers Santa via the lights having a tough day.

[00:14:19] They all get in the car to leave because hey, there's a killer among us.

[00:14:23] The car won't turn on probably cut a wire.

[00:14:26] You know, that's his MO class.

[00:14:30] The elf then gets on the car starts hitting the windshield with this sledgehammer.

[00:14:35] They shoot wiper fluid atom that throws them off the cart and they turn on the lights,

[00:14:40] which as we all know, elves hate the lights.

[00:14:43] He yells loudly three times.

[00:14:45] We know what that means.

[00:14:46] A whole plethora of elves begin to come out of the barn.

[00:14:50] It's to three yell.

[00:14:52] Three yell plethora.

[00:14:53] Yes.

[00:14:54] They're able to successfully fight them off for now.

[00:14:58] A police officer comes on a snowmobile to see what's going on.

[00:15:02] And she's like, barn elves are not real.

[00:15:05] She then hears her snowmobile turn on and is like, what the heck's going on there?

[00:15:09] It's a barn elf.

[00:15:11] Barn elf's driving a snowmobile.

[00:15:13] And runs the police officer over causing blood to shoot all over the family.

[00:15:18] They run back inside the hide and noris room which the elves,

[00:15:22] which while they're there, the elves discover alcohol downstairs.

[00:15:26] They're going nuts.

[00:15:27] They're having a party.

[00:15:28] We also see an elf accidentally shoot his buddy and himself where they gun.

[00:15:33] It is a scene that they did.

[00:15:35] So, Bill and Lucas go to try to find help while Nora and Carol are left to

[00:15:41] fend off the elves once they kind of start to attack the room.

[00:15:45] They end up getting captured.

[00:15:48] Bill and Lucas discover there's an underground tunnel under the barn

[00:15:51] that takes them to the elves village.

[00:15:53] We all know it.

[00:15:54] We all love it.

[00:15:55] They find Nora and Carol.

[00:15:56] They're tied to a post.

[00:15:57] Lucas spots his barn elf.

[00:16:00] And he kind of has done this motion with him where he touches his heart.

[00:16:04] Never give up.

[00:16:05] Throughout the room.

[00:16:06] That's right.

[00:16:07] And he sees the elf.

[00:16:08] He puts his hand on his heart.

[00:16:09] And that is when this barn elf is like, you know, my boy, blue

[00:16:13] and decides that he is going to help this family go and try to escape from this elf village.

[00:16:22] So, they're all heading back.

[00:16:24] And Nora, they get back to the barn and it is now surrounded by bad elves.

[00:16:29] Nora sees gas and is spilt from the snowmobile.

[00:16:32] So she lights a paper airplane on fire.

[00:16:34] She's really good at paper airplanes.

[00:16:36] And that causes the entire barn to explode.

[00:16:39] They're saved but their barn elf now has no home.

[00:16:42] They have destroyed the barn.

[00:16:44] So, they bring him to the elf museum that they have downtown.

[00:16:47] Obviously where he can live in peace.

[00:16:50] And the movie ends with them all looking up and seeing the northern lights.

[00:16:55] And now my friends was there's something in the barn.

[00:17:00] We did it.

[00:17:02] We did it everybody.

[00:17:03] We are going to take a quick break.

[00:17:06] We'll come back, we'll break down.

[00:17:07] There's something in the barn.

[00:17:08] From Fantastic Fests here on, take the homework.

[00:17:20] Welcome back everybody.

[00:17:23] We are talking about there's something in the barn.

[00:17:26] The 2023 Norwegian thriller.

[00:17:31] Norwegian, Norwegian thriller.

[00:17:33] Let's start with a hot tag and let's start with our good friend Alonzo.

[00:17:37] Alonzo, what did you think of there's something in the barn?

[00:17:41] Well first of all just say, oh no, Fantastic Fests is like a real thing.

[00:17:45] Like it's...

[00:17:46] Yes, it's the Alamo Draft House people put it on.

[00:17:49] It's like a big genre film.

[00:17:51] I've been with that Alamo Draft House.

[00:17:52] Yes, in Austin, Texas.

[00:17:54] We both have.

[00:17:55] Yeah.

[00:17:56] It is so...

[00:17:57] So actually it's a great name.

[00:17:59] It's a great movie.

[00:18:00] Some credibility to have played at Fantastic Fests.

[00:18:02] Fantastic.

[00:18:03] I like this movie a lot.

[00:18:04] I was excited to hear about it when they weren't announcing it.

[00:18:07] I was hoping it was going to open theatrical in the US but then when it went to streaming

[00:18:11] I reviewed it off of that just because I've been a big Martin Starfan.

[00:18:15] Ever since Freaks and Geeks.

[00:18:18] Do I feel extra old now that this actor who I first saw playing a high school

[00:18:22] or is now playing the father of a teenager?

[00:18:25] Sure, yes, of course.

[00:18:26] But nonetheless, yeah, this is my sort of sweet spot of horror in that there's enough stakes to make it tense

[00:18:35] and that you worry about what the outcome is going to be but not so much that it's hard to watch the screen.

[00:18:44] I thought it was funny.

[00:18:46] I think the whole culture shock of the American family trying to figure out Norway and the Norwegians

[00:18:51] and their assumptions about what Americans are like is funny.

[00:18:54] Yeah, I dug it.

[00:18:57] I'm a fan.

[00:18:58] I also dug it.

[00:19:00] This movie was giving me Cranpas Vs which we love.

[00:19:04] I love Cranpas.

[00:19:05] It is a movie that I watch every Halloween time as a nice transitional from Halloween to Christmas.

[00:19:12] I might begin to throw this movie into that same mix.

[00:19:15] It's very, very fun and I would say like my wife who does not like horror movies also loves Cranpas

[00:19:22] and I think that she would also really dig this movie because it's silly enough.

[00:19:27] No one's really scared of these barn elves.

[00:19:32] They're just fun and they're going around and they're just causing chaos and it's very fun.

[00:19:37] So this is a really great one of those scary, scary Christmas movies that you can watch

[00:19:44] even if you're not a big thriller horror fan.

[00:19:48] They're like Gremlins with cute hats.

[00:19:50] Yes, they really are.

[00:19:51] And so unlike whatever that movie was we watched from Shutter last year, this is on the other side.

[00:19:58] I think that this is kind of an all play and even if it's all played for adults.

[00:20:04] Of course, a language, a lot of blood, all of that.

[00:20:08] But it's like so over the top that it's no longer scary and so I think it's a really fun movie.

[00:20:14] I think early on the movie totally kind of lost me.

[00:20:19] It felt like they had to throw a teenager saying an F word in occasionally to remind you it wasn't a kids movie.

[00:20:26] Like it feels very just like plucky and like the elves going to actually be their friend for like the first 30 or 40 minutes.

[00:20:34] And then they finally allow this thing to they cut it loose about 40, 45 minutes in the next hour is like that fake blood splatter in very creative death scenes.

[00:20:47] Really funny stuff like funny horror.

[00:20:50] If you enjoy that genre mashup, I think you really enjoy this.

[00:20:54] There's some very specific Norwegian humor that I found funny in this movie.

[00:20:58] The last hour is an absolute blast.

[00:21:00] The first 35 40 didn't quite land for me but I feel like the last hour made up for it and was a ton of fun.

[00:21:07] And I it did make me think I would have liked to see it on the big screen.

[00:21:12] So it was salvaged for me and Martin star being his deadpan as he normally is.

[00:21:16] He's playing more of just like a goofy dad in this movie, which is different.

[00:21:21] I enjoyed it.

[00:21:22] I enjoyed how much fun they had especially with like I'll get to in the fields.

[00:21:28] I enjoyed how much fun they have with how crazy they got with some of these elves and some of the death scenes in this movie.

[00:21:32] Well, and I will say it's impressive because the the Elf attacks really happened with about an hour left in the movie.

[00:21:40] Yeah. Like how are they like what are they going to do?

[00:21:42] It's relentless from that point.

[00:21:43] It's good.

[00:21:44] It's good. It's a lit up.

[00:21:45] It's really, really fun.

[00:21:46] It didn't it still didn't feel long despite having an hour long Elf attack sequence.

[00:21:51] So kudos to them for that.

[00:21:53] It's time for all the fields when we talk about what in this movie gave us his feels.

[00:21:56] Alonso.

[00:21:57] Well, you know, I know dancing he didn't like the the lead up in the beginning of the film but I kind of liked the idea,

[00:22:05] especially after all of the hallmark movies that we have all watched.

[00:22:09] This is what really happens when city people show up in a small town which is the people that small town are like.

[00:22:15] Who are you?

[00:22:16] What do you want?

[00:22:17] Yeah, you're going to open a what?

[00:22:19] Really?

[00:22:20] Yeah.

[00:22:21] I don't know about that.

[00:22:22] Yeah.

[00:22:23] You know, I thought that that to me felt like a bomb after the the many sort of you know, after all the gazebo's.

[00:22:29] That felt like an honest rendering of like what this scenario, how it would actually play out.

[00:22:35] So that was my biggest feel and then just the fact that I think that you know, there is a delicate juggling act in mixing comedy and horror where if you tip over too much into one,

[00:22:47] you're going to negate the other one.

[00:22:49] And this one to me felt like it managed to be scary and funny all the way through to the end.

[00:22:55] I didn't really know what to expect from what the something in the barn was.

[00:23:02] I didn't really read into it beforehand.

[00:23:05] And so when we get the story of the you know, the barn elf, I'm like, all right, what are we going to do here?

[00:23:13] And then when the barn elf one ends up being real and two finally reveals itself to Lucas, I was so happy.

[00:23:21] It was so like funny and also sweet, like kind of I mentioned ET while we were watching it.

[00:23:27] But it is kind of like this kid finds this thing in the backyard now.

[00:23:31] What is this? This excitement?

[00:23:33] This like, hey, here's a cookie.

[00:23:35] It was all like I love that whole scene in the barn when he discovers the barn elf for the first time.

[00:23:39] I just love does it.

[00:23:41] There's a police officer in this movie that keeps showing up to the house on her snowmobile and keeps basically telling them they're not seeing anything like it's like a fox or it's whatever.

[00:23:51] And every scene is really funny and they play on the idea that police officer doesn't even carry a gun.

[00:23:56] And all that's going good but a little bit of a spoiler here if you don't want the movie spoil, maybe muted at this point.

[00:24:02] All the way up to her death being one of the funniest things I've had like very dark, dark humor but the way that the elves killed this police officer had me in stitches.

[00:24:13] It was really, really funny and that was when I knew this movie had won me over was they fully went for it there and that whole part of this film was so great.

[00:24:23] So I really enjoyed that.

[00:24:25] Let's take one more quick break. We'll come back and we'll get to the weight what and the what the flicks. Yeah, it is. It is that it is that.

[00:24:34] I'm calling it.

[00:24:35] You're not taking over.

[00:24:44] Well, whatever happened to what the flickalons, why don't you just do that show anymore?

[00:24:48] We were fired. That's why breakfast.

[00:24:53] Hey, don't we get to band together. It's breakfast all day. It's telling enough wonderful to I love that you lit it up into different every movie as its own video or that helps me out to only listen to the ones I've seen.

[00:25:05] It's very nice for me. So thank you. Yeah right here on YouTube if you're watching if you're listening here on YouTube, you can go subscribe to breakfast all day.

[00:25:13] Where's our where's our deck the Netflix graphic? What happened to that?

[00:25:16] We're all like the work all the time now.

[00:25:19] I'm a believer in branding.

[00:25:22] It's time for the way what is where we talk about what and this movie is going wait.

[00:25:28] What?

[00:25:29] Alanto.

[00:25:30] You know, weirdly I got nothing like I mean once you buy into the concept that barn elves exist and that there are rules to follow much like again, the gremlins.

[00:25:42] The movie kind of plays by its own rules. And so you know within that framework, there's nothing I can point out well that would never happen because they kind of lay out what's going to happen and how and why.

[00:25:57] So yeah, I am wait what was on this one.

[00:26:00] Wow.

[00:26:01] I have a few is wait what list.

[00:26:03] Wait what list it is some of mine like it is tough because you have to like you know suspend so much disbelief here that it's crazy to complain.

[00:26:11] You're you're within a fantasy framework, but as long as they follow the rules within that framework, they can go to town.

[00:26:17] Yes.

[00:26:18] It does set up a three rules for getting along well with barn elves.

[00:26:25] One is no loud noises one is no lights.

[00:26:29] Don't like the lights and ones no changes.

[00:26:32] And that's why when a barn elf discovers a snowmobile took me by surprise that it got on to snowmobile turned on loud noise.

[00:26:42] Yes lights on right and it's discovering something new for the very first time.

[00:26:48] Doesn't seem to bother one bit in fact seems to love it and I'm not so sure these rules.

[00:26:54] I think they actually do a lot of things.

[00:26:56] They throw out the gun is new.

[00:26:59] The gun is no loud noise and the television set that's blinding the part they throw a party.

[00:27:05] Yeah, what I think once they actually begin to experience the loud noises, the bright lights and the something news.

[00:27:13] I think they're actually pretty big fans.

[00:27:16] It's their rum sprigga.

[00:27:18] They're going nuts.

[00:27:20] I did get a good chuckle out of the notion that teenagers store moonshine in their rooms.

[00:27:27] You know how teenagers are always drinking moonshine.

[00:27:30] That's the teenagers.

[00:27:32] They get all of it up already but she said the guy at the party is getting the plastic jug this is like 97% on it.

[00:27:39] And then last but not least, I do love that this elf, this barn elf.

[00:27:46] Essentially turns on his own people for what I think is a total of three cookies over the course of two days.

[00:27:54] He is so like he pulls a reverse out of the toilet.

[00:27:58] He gave me three cookies.

[00:28:01] He gave me three cookies.

[00:28:03] He taught me this thing.

[00:28:04] There's nothing I can do.

[00:28:06] There's nothing I can do.

[00:28:07] He's born else to die.

[00:28:08] And he tried with the loot fist.

[00:28:10] And he blew up his house.

[00:28:12] He gave up so much for the price of three cookies.

[00:28:17] And so shout out to him, Dano.

[00:28:19] Exactly how many cookies does Lucas have access to?

[00:28:22] Because I see him with over half dozen in the evening at one point eating them and they're in the middle of nowhere.

[00:28:28] Is he eating all of the family's cookies?

[00:28:31] Like I would be upset unless there's just a closet with bookies of cookies.

[00:28:37] I'm going to be a little bit upset at Lucas for eating all the cookies.

[00:28:41] It also is, and this is part of suspending your disbelief, but the family not buying into something crazy is going on.

[00:28:49] And the town not buying into the fact that something crazy is going on is it takes them forever to jump on board with Lucas here.

[00:28:57] Especially when the people in the town continually tell you, hey the barn may be haunted,

[00:29:02] but are we down for a party in there?

[00:29:04] You bet we also have an elf museum down there.

[00:29:08] Yeah, they think it's a legend.

[00:29:10] Exactly.

[00:29:11] Exactly.

[00:29:12] Yeah, they take some awhile.

[00:29:14] And they're not going to trust the Americans.

[00:29:16] No, that's not fair.

[00:29:18] But his own family doesn't trust him until they see the elves themselves after a while.

[00:29:23] All of these Norwegians know English which helps us.

[00:29:26] We don't have to read subtitles at that point, but that's great.

[00:29:29] They all know it.

[00:29:30] It's fantastic.

[00:29:31] It's good, good for all of us on board.

[00:29:34] If you believe that porridge solves the problem, okay?

[00:29:40] So like at one point that he's angry, this is a real South Pole elf at this point.

[00:29:44] Like he's an angry elf.

[00:29:46] And this guy says if you give the elf porridge on Christmas Eve, then I was forgiven.

[00:29:54] Okay, it's all a copacetic.

[00:29:56] We're good to go.

[00:29:58] If you believe that is true, even if you're 12 or however old Lucas is, you got to make more than one bowl of porridge, too.

[00:30:05] Like you can't risk at all one bowl of porridge.

[00:30:07] You got to make a vat of porridge, a pot of porridge more than one serving of porridge.

[00:30:13] I feel like if you know the elves are going to raise hell if you don't get this porridge, you can't risk at all a one bowl, right?

[00:30:23] I'll say this that he thinks there's one elf.

[00:30:27] And so I get the one bowl, but why is he waiting?

[00:30:30] Yeah, like it's Christmas Eve all day out there.

[00:30:33] Make it yet deliver.

[00:30:35] Yeah, it's not to sit in the fridge.

[00:30:36] You're not waiting for night followers on something.

[00:30:38] Like just get him in there.

[00:30:39] For sure.

[00:30:40] And let me give you believe the Norwegian speaking English.

[00:30:42] That's been my experience of Europe.

[00:30:43] Everyone speaks English and they don't want to hear Americans butcher their own.

[00:30:47] I would be fine with that in a big city.

[00:30:49] In a small town of Norway, everyone that comes to this barn party speaks fluent English.

[00:30:56] That was a bridge too far for me, but I appreciated it at the same time.

[00:31:00] And then lastly, this is an actual filmmaking one, but it is funny at the same time.

[00:31:04] They, the stepmom and the daughter make moonshine bombs so they create, they get these ornament balls

[00:31:12] and they pour moonshine in them.

[00:31:14] And then they light, I guess the ornament has a fuse on it.

[00:31:18] And they throw them down at the elves.

[00:31:20] And later on they throw them and they're all explode.

[00:31:23] Well, the first one that comes down, the elves are all looking at it like what's this?

[00:31:27] And it is this really comical scene where it explodes and the elves go flying, like just scattershot.

[00:31:33] The problem is is dude is holding that.

[00:31:35] And the explosion clearly comes from the ground.

[00:31:38] It's so evident that the ground is ready to explode.

[00:31:43] And so he's holding this and then you see the snow blow up from underneath him.

[00:31:48] And that was like unfortunate in the cutting room there.

[00:31:52] It's all I got.

[00:31:53] Read a physics book, Dan.

[00:31:54] Yeah, come on just one.

[00:31:56] It's time for what the flake shine bombs explode from the ground even if you're holding them.

[00:32:00] Even if you hold them.

[00:32:01] It's time for what the flake is where we wonder what could have been maybe having us in clear to any questions that we still have.

[00:32:07] Alanda.

[00:32:08] So, okay, the idea is he has uprooted his family from California.

[00:32:13] They're moving to Norway.

[00:32:14] They're going to open a B and B in the barn and the movie there is no barn left.

[00:32:18] Correct.

[00:32:19] So I'm wondering either they either they leave or they stick around and they build a new barn.

[00:32:25] And then what's the rule on new barns?

[00:32:29] Like does an elf just show up and assign itself to your barn?

[00:32:33] Do you have to hire one?

[00:32:35] Like I need to know because clearly, you know, if they hate change, they these old barns, they've been hanging around forever.

[00:32:42] But I need a new barn policy here because I'm confused about how that would work.

[00:32:46] Mine was similar whereas all of those tunnels underneath the barn are still very much in play.

[00:32:51] So are they still going to inhabit whatever barn shows up or not which was mine which is very similar to what you're saying?

[00:32:58] It seems like they didn't really do anything.

[00:33:01] They fixed a symptom, not the actual problem itself.

[00:33:05] And so it sets up nicely for something in the barn too, I think.

[00:33:10] You know, if that's possible.

[00:33:12] And if they do build a B and B is it going to be a thing where like just so you know there is an elf in the barn.

[00:33:18] Please don't make any loud noise in our turn lights and make sure the porridge yet the whole thing loves cooking.

[00:33:24] Yeah, I it up surprise surprise mine's also about the tunnel system and just the geography.

[00:33:33] How it all kind of because it could you go down and then you go up and around.

[00:33:40] I don't know where the topography pops up.

[00:33:42] I don't know what's that drawer butler movie where he's in prison but he's doing all this stuff around the city.

[00:33:48] And nobody knows how he's doing it.

[00:33:50] Do you know I'm talking about Alonzo?

[00:33:52] This is I thought I had seen every terrible drawer.

[00:33:56] But it's a you know what?

[00:33:59] It sounds familiar enough.

[00:34:02] It's not the one where somebody dies because the phone blows up right?

[00:34:06] It's what's it called law-biting citizen.

[00:34:09] Yeah, that's the one with the phone blows up.

[00:34:11] Yes, I did see that but he's in prison but he's spoiler alert for those of you that are about to check out law-biting citizen.

[00:34:17] He somehow dug a series of tunnels under the prison that allows him to leave and commit these atrocious acts to get revenge and go back into prison.

[00:34:28] Oh my perfect alibi, what are you going to do?

[00:34:30] It's got his alibi there you go.

[00:34:32] Classic law-biting citizen.

[00:34:35] I kind of want to watch it.

[00:34:37] Yeah, you would love it.

[00:34:38] Oh for sure.

[00:34:39] Yeah.

[00:34:40] All right, it's out there.
