[00:00:01] Hi, I'm Brandon and I am contractually obligated to say that I love When Calls the Heart.
[00:00:06] I'm Dan and it is of my own free will and volition that I tell you that I despise When Calls the Heart and this is the Deck The Hallmark Podcast.
[00:00:14] Deck The Hallmark, it's this podcast.
[00:00:20] And friends host this podcast.
[00:00:24] We hope you like this jolly podcast.
[00:00:28] Hi everybody.
[00:00:34] Oh boy, Bran.
[00:00:36] Did you think back in whatever year it was, 2020 I'm going to call it, that we decided we're going to do When Calls the Heart.
[00:00:42] Do you think...
[00:00:43] That happened in 2020, huh?
[00:00:44] I think we did the ad in 2020 and then we started the eps in 2021, I think.
[00:00:49] Man, COVID really messed us up.
[00:00:50] It was really so stupid.
[00:00:51] It just messed with our brain.
[00:00:52] It was the dumbest idea.
[00:00:53] Yeah.
[00:00:54] Like it's, and now we're here, we don't have a choice.
[00:00:55] Yeah.
[00:00:56] We're stuck.
[00:00:56] When Calls the Heart is our long COVID.
[00:00:58] When Calls the Heart is our long...
[00:01:00] And we don't want to make light of long COVID.
[00:01:02] No.
[00:01:04] It sticks with you.
[00:01:04] When Calls the Heart is just not going anywhere.
[00:01:06] When Calls the Heart sticks with you.
[00:01:07] I think we started this episode and I don't want to get ahead of it, but we, and Jax is
[00:01:11] going to be joining us throughout the episode by the way.
[00:01:12] Yes.
[00:01:14] But we started this episode...
[00:01:16] Ted has her in an undisclosed location.
[00:01:18] Yeah.
[00:01:18] I don't know what I can do about that.
[00:01:19] And immediately we knew.
[00:01:21] We knew.
[00:01:22] We knew.
[00:01:23] I may have booed before the credits.
[00:01:26] I mean, I don't want to give away the hot take.
[00:01:27] It could be anything.
[00:01:28] It could be, I could have been a full 180 on When Calls the Heart, but who knows?
[00:01:32] Jax is not with us.
[00:01:33] A little bit of a mix up for Ted.
[00:01:37] A merry mix up for Ted, yes.
[00:01:39] Ted made a mistake.
[00:01:40] Yes.
[00:01:41] And we were like, we're going to fly...
[00:01:45] Well, we talked to Ted.
[00:01:46] We were like, Ted, we'd love to fly...
[00:01:48] We talked to Ted on Jax's behalf.
[00:01:50] Well, we can't.
[00:01:51] We couldn't possibly afford it.
[00:01:52] No, no.
[00:01:53] But Ted, we would love to fly her into Greenville for the premiere.
[00:01:56] That's always fun.
[00:01:57] It's fun.
[00:01:58] It's a big premiere.
[00:01:59] That'd be great.
[00:02:00] We flew her straight to Morocco.
[00:02:01] It was crazy.
[00:02:02] I don't know what happened.
[00:02:03] So Jax has sent in videos...
[00:02:05] Yes.
[00:02:06] ...sharing her thoughts on it, but she's also sent in a video to kick off our weird part
[00:02:16] recording that we're doing today where she's not on the screen like she normally...
[00:02:19] Anyway, Jax, take it away.
[00:02:22] One Calls the Heart, season 12, episode one.
[00:02:26] Bummed to not be with my boys, but I'm in Senegal helping to build a school, which is almost as good as hanging out with Brandon Dan, talking about One Calls the Heart.
[00:02:36] And I'm really excited to be at the Ducky's.
[00:02:39] Uh, hopefully I won't get malaria, but I have been taking malaria pills.
[00:02:44] So we should be fine.
[00:02:47] All right.
[00:02:48] Thanks.
[00:02:48] I didn't know that that was a...
[00:02:50] I didn't think about the answer.
[00:02:52] If you think that Jax can be the same while not being here, you would think correctly.
[00:02:57] Malaria tangent for no reason whatsoever.
[00:02:59] She's taking the pills.
[00:03:00] There's no reason to think...
[00:03:01] We'd...
[00:03:01] It wasn't something we were even thinking about.
[00:03:03] She's in Senegal.
[00:03:04] Now I'm going to be thinking about it nonstop.
[00:03:05] So now we have the inenviable task of reviewing just a mindless, inane episode of television,
[00:03:11] knowing that Jax is in Senegal building a house.
[00:03:15] That's right.
[00:03:17] We are building a house.
[00:03:18] We are we?
[00:03:19] We're building this house.
[00:03:20] This house.
[00:03:21] The house of season 12 of One Calls the Heart.
[00:03:23] The house of Deck the Hallmark.
[00:03:25] It's a mighty structure.
[00:03:27] Sometimes it gets away from you a little bit.
[00:03:28] There's some weird add-ons.
[00:03:30] Some weird additions where you're like, you couldn't match the same type of materials.
[00:03:35] That looks weird.
[00:03:36] But it's a house nonetheless.
[00:03:37] It's a house nonetheless.
[00:03:38] That's right.
[00:03:39] Let's talk When Calls the Heart, shall we?
[00:03:40] Let's do it.
[00:03:41] When Calls the Heart season 12, episode one.
[00:03:43] It's called...
[00:03:44] It's never going to be over.
[00:03:47] The Mountie Way is what it's called.
[00:03:49] The Mountie Way.
[00:03:50] It originally premiered on the Hallmark Channel on January 5th, 2025.
[00:03:54] And the next day on Hallmark Plus, which of course you can add on philo.
[00:03:59] philo.tv slash DTH.
[00:04:00] I wonder about what's calling my heart.
[00:04:01] Is that a thing we do and we have locked and loaded?
[00:04:04] Yeah.
[00:04:05] What's calling my heart?
[00:04:05] Great.
[00:04:06] I love it.
[00:04:07] Yeah.
[00:04:07] And don't forget hopes and valleys.
[00:04:10] Chicken of the week even.
[00:04:12] We're gone.
[00:04:12] So there's this...
[00:04:15] The Mountie...
[00:04:15] Remember, last season ended on a cliffhanger.
[00:04:18] Yeah, it did.
[00:04:18] And this guy came in and was like, I've got news about your husband.
[00:04:21] And so that's going to be a big plot point for the whole season, clearly.
[00:04:24] Right?
[00:04:25] And he's like, I got news about your late husband.
[00:04:28] He tries to make the conversation private, saying, Nathan, you've got to be a part of this.
[00:04:33] And then she's like, I want him to be a part of it.
[00:04:36] So he hands her Jack's commissioner medal, which is the highest honor amount he can get.
[00:04:44] They found it while excavating the site where his corpse was still there.
[00:04:50] And they got it.
[00:04:51] So that's good.
[00:04:53] Then...
[00:04:55] I don't know.
[00:04:56] Yeah, they did.
[00:04:57] They did.
[00:04:57] Digging years later.
[00:04:58] Digged that up.
[00:04:59] We've got to dig Jack up.
[00:05:00] We've got to dig Jack's corpse up years later.
[00:05:03] Yeah.
[00:05:03] Well, in the rubble.
[00:05:04] Yes.
[00:05:05] Paw Patrol.
[00:05:06] Then this guy, for reasons I don't know, throws some unnecessary shade in the direction
[00:05:13] of Nathan being with Elizabeth.
[00:05:17] No one asked you, sir.
[00:05:18] Stay out of it.
[00:05:20] Doesn't involve you.
[00:05:22] Um, Rosemary is upset that Lee is going to be gone for a while while planning the park.
[00:05:28] He's like, I'm not going to do it.
[00:05:31] I wouldn't dare.
[00:05:32] If I've seen one episode, I've seen them all.
[00:05:35] Lee's going to do it.
[00:05:38] Uh, so just buckle up.
[00:05:41] Comic books have come to town, uh, to Hope Valley very, uh, much to the concern of all
[00:05:45] the adults.
[00:05:46] They think it's going to be the, you know, all these kids and these violent video games.
[00:05:52] Uh, Lee is pushing back against Lucas's request for him to go to Capital City for the planning
[00:05:59] because it's not in the best interest of the family.
[00:06:02] I just, I have baby now.
[00:06:03] I have baby.
[00:06:04] Rosemary is, uh, bothered by the drop of readership of the newspaper due to radio, but she is
[00:06:12] struck with a genius idea.
[00:06:14] News radio.
[00:06:16] Whoa.
[00:06:17] Oh, Rosemary is to thank for Alex Jones.
[00:06:21] Elizabeth goes to talk to Nathan because I think a lot of windows are a few.
[00:06:27] What about the frogs?
[00:06:29] Uh, Elizabeth goes to talk to Nathan because she can feel, uh, that he feels guilty about
[00:06:36] the whole Jack thing.
[00:06:37] Like he can see in the face.
[00:06:39] Like, because if you remember, he was supposed to go on that mission.
[00:06:41] He was supposed to lead it.
[00:06:42] He, he didn't go.
[00:06:44] That's right.
[00:06:44] Jack step in.
[00:06:45] Jack died.
[00:06:46] Jack and Rubble.
[00:06:47] That's right.
[00:06:48] He took your place.
[00:06:49] I know.
[00:06:50] Um, he explains that the tension here is that he knows one day he's going to have to tell
[00:06:58] little Jack, baby Jack, baby Jack, a little, little puppy Jack.
[00:07:02] Uh, sorry, baby Jack that, well, he's not a baby.
[00:07:05] Yeah.
[00:07:07] Um, that is dad, you know, it basically, he's the reason why his dad's dead.
[00:07:11] Um, cadet Oliver Garrett shows up and interrupts this moment and learns his first lesson.
[00:07:17] Always knock on the door of people in charge because you don't know what they're doing or
[00:07:24] what level of clothes they have on if they're wearing clothes.
[00:07:27] Um, kudos to Oliver though, for not asking why his shirt is halfway buttoned.
[00:07:35] Yeah.
[00:07:35] While he looks disheveled like he and Elizabeth just did, did, did whatever behind closed doors.
[00:07:41] They were just having a conversation, but it didn't look good.
[00:07:43] But it certainly looks like they did.
[00:07:44] And then you say knock.
[00:07:45] I don't, yeah.
[00:07:46] Mine's going to wander.
[00:07:47] Yeah.
[00:07:47] Um, baby Jack is nervous about his first day at school.
[00:07:50] Uh, even though his mom's going to be there the whole time.
[00:07:55] And Elizabeth gives him Jack's medal to wear, uh, just one time.
[00:07:59] Uh, he tell, uh, he ends up letting, letting a faithful girl.
[00:08:03] I didn't get her name, uh, to where cause she's also nervous.
[00:08:06] Yes.
[00:08:07] And, uh, now he's a hero.
[00:08:08] Yeah, he is.
[00:08:09] Uh, Lee tries to convince Rose.
[00:08:12] Again, guys, Lee's going, I don't know.
[00:08:14] He's going, he's going.
[00:08:15] Lee, uh, tries to convince Rosemary that he should go by telling her the good news.
[00:08:21] They're going to name the park after Goldie.
[00:08:24] Whoa.
[00:08:24] So really you've pushed, uh, Rose.
[00:08:26] Rosemary has no choice.
[00:08:28] I mean, nothing's more important than a park named after her daughter.
[00:08:30] 100%.
[00:08:30] Um, so yeah, she said, uh, he hops on a train to LAX, uh, with Lucas and is shocked to find
[00:08:38] out that that slime ball from the campaign with the mustache, with the mustache, you know,
[00:08:42] the one, uh, he's still around who was originally the tourist mad about the hot springs.
[00:08:46] That's right.
[00:08:47] And hot spring.
[00:08:47] Um, the episode ends with Nathan showing up at night, uh, with a case for the metal.
[00:08:53] Um, and, uh, then they go and they look at the moon.
[00:08:56] They howl, uh, and then they kiss.
[00:08:59] And that my friends was when calls the heart season 12 episode one, not this again.
[00:09:05] We did it.
[00:09:07] Uh, let's, uh, let's do this.
[00:09:09] Let's take a break.
[00:09:09] We'll come back.
[00:09:10] We'll, uh, we'll break this episode down here.
[00:09:13] Everybody.
[00:09:23] Welcome back.
[00:09:24] It's, uh, deck, the hallmark.
[00:09:25] We're talking when calls the hearts again.
[00:09:28] Um, Jax is not with us live today, but she will still be sharing all of her thoughts.
[00:09:36] Of course.
[00:09:36] Um, including the hot take.
[00:09:38] Above and beyond from Jax.
[00:09:39] Including the hot take.
[00:09:40] It's where we, uh, share exactly how he felt about this episode of television.
[00:09:44] We are not going to hold back.
[00:09:45] And I will start with Jax on location.
[00:09:50] Jax, can you hear us?
[00:09:51] Jax.
[00:09:52] Okay.
[00:09:53] Hot take.
[00:09:55] You know, we've been waiting, or at least I've been waiting for the, for this cliffhanger.
[00:09:59] What's going to happen?
[00:10:00] Is Jack still alive?
[00:10:02] Maybe.
[00:10:03] Is this going to turn into another love triangle just as we got out of our last love triangle?
[00:10:12] No, Jack isn't alive anymore.
[00:10:15] Yes, Daniel, the singer, and Aaron Craig Coe were reunited for a hallmark movie this season.
[00:10:20] But no, there will be no appearance of Ghost Jack on One Calls the Heart.
[00:10:24] But they did find his, his medal, which I, I did think that this was, although it did feel anticlimactic.
[00:10:32] I thought this moment with Little Jack was so sweet and the way he took the medal to school and then lent it to Lily.
[00:10:41] Lily.
[00:10:42] I just thought all of that was adorable and very moving.
[00:10:44] I thought Nathan and, um, Little Jack getting someone on one time together.
[00:10:50] Loved all that.
[00:10:55] Um, Rosemary not wanting to leave to go out of town.
[00:10:57] I get it.
[00:10:58] She's a toddler.
[00:10:59] Like, and look, I love Lucas.
[00:11:02] You know, I love Lucas.
[00:11:03] But like, why does Lily need to be out of town?
[00:11:06] I, I, I, I know it's not for that long, but like, who knows what will happen.
[00:11:11] Okay.
[00:11:11] So, so, you know, dealing with all that.
[00:11:13] Um, and then of course I'm missing May Sue and sexy Ben Rosenbaum.
[00:11:19] Are they on their honeymoon?
[00:11:21] I, I guess.
[00:11:22] Did they say that?
[00:11:22] Did I miss it?
[00:11:24] What's going on?
[00:11:25] Bring them back.
[00:11:26] Please.
[00:11:28] Amen.
[00:11:28] All right.
[00:11:29] Thank you for that.
[00:11:30] Um, initially I thought she was going to do the whole plot of the episode and I was
[00:11:33] very worried.
[00:11:34] I, uh, listen, I, I'm not going to try.
[00:11:39] I'm not going to pretend that I'm not going to pretend.
[00:11:40] You're not going to pretend.
[00:11:41] I'm not going to pretend I'm happy.
[00:11:42] I'm not going to pretend I'm happy about this.
[00:11:44] We're, we're here.
[00:11:46] It's happening.
[00:11:47] We've, uh, made, we've made our bed and we have to lie in it.
[00:11:50] Yeah.
[00:11:50] And so while I lie in bed at night and I try to fall asleep, I oftentimes put on Winkle's
[00:11:55] heart and to put me to sleep.
[00:11:58] And I also try to think about good things.
[00:12:01] I try, I think of myself to be a relatively positive person, despite my outbursts on yesterday's
[00:12:07] program about the Irish movie.
[00:12:09] I, I, I like to think that, uh, I'm a positive person.
[00:12:13] And so I try to find good things about, um, uh, it and, uh, yeah, it's tough out here.
[00:12:22] It's tough out here because it, and it just seems, I thought you had a few in the chamber.
[00:12:26] I did.
[00:12:27] It seems like, and I can't, it seems like, uh, once again, they do this thing where they,
[00:12:36] where the season ends and you're like, okay, okay, okay.
[00:12:42] And then they squash it.
[00:12:45] It's the hope that is as quick as they possibly can.
[00:12:49] And this is not the first time they have started the season by crushing, uh, a potential storyline
[00:12:57] that could be exciting.
[00:12:59] And, uh, or, or, um, our guy Gowan going up to the door.
[00:13:04] Oh my God.
[00:13:05] I forgot about that one thing.
[00:13:06] They do where they, they, I, I think part of it is they just don't know.
[00:13:10] They don't actually know what they're going to do in the next season.
[00:13:12] So they're like, let's just end it in a way where anything is possible, including Jack
[00:13:17] still being alive.
[00:13:19] Uh, and unless they are going to do the same thing at the end of this season where
[00:13:24] they set up Jack being alive, I think this is it.
[00:13:27] I think, you know, we still haven't seen the body obviously, but we're never going to see
[00:13:29] the body as home.
[00:13:30] So when we see the metal and that I think is a bummer as somebody who is cheering for Jack
[00:13:38] to come back in some way, because we're here minus what?
[00:13:43] Like why, why not?
[00:13:45] It's season 11 billion.
[00:13:46] We may as well just so, uh, think bumps and at least they do it quick.
[00:13:52] You know, at least they pull that bandaid right off.
[00:13:54] Um, and the rest of it, I just, I don't have, I don't, nothing, nothing so far this season.
[00:13:59] Um, has, um, piqued my interest.
[00:14:03] Typically there's a storyline here or there that I find intriguing, but so far, nothing.
[00:14:07] Um, if I had to pick one, it would be Rosemary in good radio.
[00:14:15] Cause I like to play radio.
[00:14:16] Of course we all do.
[00:14:17] So that's something.
[00:14:19] But aside from that, I'm, uh, I, I was disappointed and, and, uh, before I could even get bored,
[00:14:26] I was disappointed and then that made it even easier to become bored because I'm just sad.
[00:14:31] I'm just, you know what it is.
[00:14:32] It is what it is.
[00:14:33] We are here and I'm going to continue to go into every episode thinking there could be
[00:14:36] something in this episode that I'm, that's going to, uh, uh, make it, make it happen for
[00:14:40] me.
[00:14:40] Unfortunately, not in this one, Dana.
[00:14:42] Do we know if it's 10 or 12 this year?
[00:14:44] Is it 10 episodes?
[00:14:45] Yeah.
[00:14:45] I looked on IMDb.
[00:14:46] It only says four that are listed.
[00:14:48] It could be anything.
[00:14:49] Maybe it's four.
[00:14:50] God, that would be a dream.
[00:14:52] It's an EP.
[00:14:52] You know?
[00:14:53] Oh, well, I just was trying to figure out when I'm going to get the, we're back baby
[00:14:57] from you on this show.
[00:14:58] We'll find out.
[00:14:59] Yeah.
[00:14:59] It's going to be episode four, episode six, depending on if it's, um, listen, there is
[00:15:04] not much in this world worse than a premiere episode of when calls the heart.
[00:15:09] Um, most surgeries I would probably prefer.
[00:15:13] Uh, this is a show that routinely has enough plot for three episodes and they've jammed that
[00:15:21] into a 12 episode package for you.
[00:15:24] Um, it is like having a different CD for every song that you have.
[00:15:30] It is so ridiculous.
[00:15:32] Uh, so it's already uphill.
[00:15:34] We've never seen a premiere episode where we're like, this is the ticket.
[00:15:37] It's always, why don't we wait till next week to get everything started?
[00:15:40] This, this show routinely will take two, three, four episodes to really get the ball rolling
[00:15:47] on anything of measurable significance that this show has to offer.
[00:15:52] It is a show that could be, it's virtually could be an email.
[00:15:55] It's a two hour movie, a three hour movie, and you got 12 episodes to figure it out.
[00:15:59] So we're already up against it.
[00:16:02] As far as premiere episodes go, that are all terrible, right?
[00:16:07] Every when calls the heart first episode is a zero of 10.
[00:16:11] Uh, in the grand scheme of those, this is the worst one.
[00:16:16] This is the worst.
[00:16:18] Oh, really?
[00:16:19] Think so.
[00:16:20] It is brand like, but what data do you have to prove that?
[00:16:23] Can you recall any?
[00:16:24] Any, I, well, I know that last year I was real angry.
[00:16:29] We didn't get anything else on Abigail, but at least Gowan comes back.
[00:16:33] Gowan's in this episode.
[00:16:36] I mean, like I want to throw a flag for illegal use of Gowan.
[00:16:39] It is, it is so little.
[00:16:43] He's a borderline extra in this, in this episode of television.
[00:16:47] Um, we left last season with nowhere to go all day to get there.
[00:16:51] And the one thing we had is I need to talk to you about your husband.
[00:16:54] Turns out he doesn't need to talk to her about her husband.
[00:16:57] He just needs to give her his medal.
[00:16:59] That's it.
[00:17:00] That's that's it.
[00:17:01] What is that?
[00:17:02] Like, what do you need to talk to her about?
[00:17:04] He's that's right.
[00:17:05] So my thing is, is that if a man goes, I need to talk to you about your husband.
[00:17:09] There has to be some new information.
[00:17:12] Not we found his medal.
[00:17:14] That would be, are you the, are you the wife of Jack Thornton?
[00:17:17] We found his medal in the rubble.
[00:17:18] We're digging up blah, blah, blah.
[00:17:20] And then from there, the, the, the show gets unwatchable.
[00:17:24] I like, I imagine if you love this show and I know people think that I'm just here to make fun of the show as a, as a bit.
[00:17:31] And that, and I'm just being mean for the sake of being mean.
[00:17:33] And I promise you that I'm not, this is very difficult for me.
[00:17:36] And this show is not for me, but trying to empathize with someone who loves this show.
[00:17:41] I guess you're just excited to see all your old friends and you don't care if nothing happens.
[00:17:46] That's the best that I can figure is if you, I think if you're a fan of, uh, of Nathan Grant of, of Kevin McGarry.
[00:17:54] Okay.
[00:17:55] Yeah.
[00:17:55] This episode is working.
[00:17:56] Okay.
[00:17:56] If you were watching just for Kevin McGarry, then I guess you have a point.
[00:18:00] Because he's given some good performances.
[00:18:01] There's a lot of him in this episode.
[00:18:03] He's got the, and a lot in more ways than one.
[00:18:06] And there's the, there's the suspenders on button.
[00:18:08] I guess you can make a case.
[00:18:10] It's a good Kevin McGarry watching episode.
[00:18:13] Outside of those folks, if you are here because you like this show and have liked it from the beginning, like if it was me and I liked the characters and the arc, I would skip the first two to five episodes every year.
[00:18:27] Because it is just a miserable, just like slog through the, this, this like slew of despond to get us to the starting line of the plot that will take up maybe 80 minutes of this season.
[00:18:46] And it's not, it's not, I'm, I hate this thing where it's like, it's like Brigadoon where you're just there and just living life with people.
[00:18:54] It's not that it isn't, it is this weird, weird thing that somehow we're getting all of the extra footage from.
[00:19:03] Like if it's four hours long, then it's like, okay, this was a quaint chased, slow moving television program.
[00:19:11] But at 12 hours long, we're getting a bunch of stuff that shouldn't have made it to television.
[00:19:17] And this first episode is just aside from the Kevin McGarry watching, which is a very good point.
[00:19:24] It's just useless.
[00:19:27] And I hated it.
[00:19:28] I hated every second of it.
[00:19:30] It felt like we watched a full length movie.
[00:19:33] It, when, when calls the heart is bad, nothing is worse.
[00:19:37] And I think you're with me on that, that we have to do when, when calls the heart is bad or boring or uninteresting or disinteresting.
[00:19:43] There's nothing that we watch.
[00:19:45] Not an hour and a half long Johnson joint about Niagara Falls.
[00:19:48] Nothing.
[00:19:49] It's the worst.
[00:19:50] You know what?
[00:19:50] And Kathleen brings up a good point here.
[00:19:52] She says, I think some fans are fans of the romance.
[00:19:54] And I will say one positive of this episode.
[00:19:57] And it's a thing that we've talked about over the past couple of seasons is Elizabeth has been barely used over the past couple of seasons.
[00:20:02] Correct.
[00:20:02] We do get a lot of Elizabeth and Nathan in this episode, which if you are a fan of the villain of the romance, then I think that's a win.
[00:20:11] I think this episode is a win for you.
[00:20:12] I guess.
[00:20:13] I mean, I guess there's a lot of people who've been waiting a long time for Elizabeth and Nathan to court.
[00:20:18] Just kiss a lot.
[00:20:19] And I, and I just, that's all well and good.
[00:20:22] They don't go on a date in this episode.
[00:20:24] They have three scenes together.
[00:20:25] I guess we can call that a really good episode for those folks.
[00:20:30] I don't know.
[00:20:31] I don't know.
[00:20:32] Here's all I know is.
[00:20:33] You get one good kiss.
[00:20:34] When, when Jack died, the IMDB user ratings, which are completely unwatched or unwarranted, like they're not, I mean, they're just not supervised.
[00:20:42] Anybody can do what they want.
[00:20:42] So super fans end up getting their say when Jack died, the ratings tanked.
[00:20:48] When they had the love triangle, the IMDB user ratings starting to go back up.
[00:20:52] When she chose Lucas, they went down to the sixes, like in between five and seven, somewhere in there.
[00:20:57] Now that she's with Nathan, they're back up in the sevens and eights.
[00:21:00] Team Nathan is a more ardent fan base.
[00:21:02] They got what they wanted and that's great for them.
[00:21:04] And I'm happy they get to see this courtship take place.
[00:21:07] But there's a television show you're supposed to be making and this is barely qualifying as television.
[00:21:12] I just can't, it's just, it's just brutal.
[00:21:16] Let's get to all the feels.
[00:21:17] We were talking about what in this episode gave us feels.
[00:21:19] I believe Jax is back on the line and she has her feels locked and loaded.
[00:21:24] Jax?
[00:21:26] Okay, so I had all the feels when we found out that it's going to be Goldie National Park.
[00:21:34] Good God.
[00:21:35] Jax.
[00:21:36] No.
[00:21:37] And of course when Nathan made a little case for the medal and he and Elizabeth had this moment.
[00:21:45] Also, I had sexy feels.
[00:21:51] When Nathan came over to see Elizabeth when Little Jack was asleep, like, holy moly.
[00:21:57] Like, it is heating up.
[00:22:02] Like, yeah.
[00:22:04] Yeah.
[00:22:05] It's pretty spicy.
[00:22:07] It is pretty spicy.
[00:22:09] And I was not with her until that last one.
[00:22:11] Well, yeah.
[00:22:12] It is spicy.
[00:22:13] And I think that this show is in an interesting place because it is for people that's more
[00:22:21] than anything else.
[00:22:22] Still based on a book written by someone that was very, like, very, very conservative.
[00:22:25] We want to see kissing and nothing else.
[00:22:27] That's right.
[00:22:28] And I think that this show and this episode in particular with that scene did as good of
[00:22:34] a job as you can do with making it.
[00:22:39] Basically, it's like, oh, they're doing it right now.
[00:22:42] Yes.
[00:22:42] That's what it, even though they're clearly not.
[00:22:46] Heavily implied that what happened here was more than what you saw.
[00:22:51] And it's not.
[00:22:52] I don't think it is.
[00:23:04] That's right.
[00:23:05] Yeah.
[00:23:06] The last scene of this is very much, we've all talked about it, but I won't hear the
[00:23:11] park thing.
[00:23:12] I won't hear it.
[00:23:12] We'll talk about that later.
[00:23:13] She made a face that made it seem like maybe it wasn't a good feel.
[00:23:16] Maybe she was embarrassed even that she had the feel.
[00:23:19] But the last scene of this, which I guess every episode where nothing actually happens,
[00:23:24] they just do a scene at the end with Elizabeth and Nathan, and they hope you forget that nothing
[00:23:29] happened.
[00:23:29] But that scene is so like the tension is palpable in that scene.
[00:23:35] The sexual tension is palpable in that scene.
[00:23:37] It's crazy.
[00:23:38] You could there's no world where they aren't going further than they went there considering
[00:23:45] the history of these characters and how long they've been on and off courting.
[00:23:52] I just, it's crazy.
[00:23:55] But my thing is, is even though that scene does work and it's the only scene that I really
[00:23:59] think does work, no, it's the only scene that does work for me.
[00:24:05] It is no less than the 10th time they've done this.
[00:24:08] I'm going to low ball it.
[00:24:10] It's the 10th time they've ended an episode with Elizabeth and Nathan, usually at her house
[00:24:15] either making eyes, making out or having some sort of moment of tension or longing or something.
[00:24:23] It, at some point you, you just can't go to that.
[00:24:27] Well, anymore.
[00:24:28] I'm sorry.
[00:24:29] Like it is, they, they've made a living off of it for the better part of four or five seasons
[00:24:34] brand.
[00:24:35] So to continue to give that feels like it's earned is garbage.
[00:24:40] I like, that's the thing is like, that's something that it last season we'd have been like,
[00:24:44] Oh, look at that.
[00:24:45] And the season before we'd be like, can you believe this?
[00:24:48] What are we?
[00:24:48] It's season 12.
[00:24:52] Let's take a break.
[00:24:52] We'll come back.
[00:24:53] We'll get to the way.
[00:24:54] What hopes and valleys and what's called my heart.
[00:24:57] A lot, a lot, a lot still to come here on deck.
[00:25:00] The hallmark.
[00:25:00] Okay.
[00:25:09] Hi everybody.
[00:25:11] Welcome back.
[00:25:12] We're talking Winkles the Heart season 12, episode one.
[00:25:15] Let's get to the wait what's where we talk about what's in this episode.
[00:25:19] Made us go wait what's and I will start with you, Jax.
[00:25:24] Okay.
[00:25:24] So both of my wait what's have to do with the kids.
[00:25:29] Toby and Cooper.
[00:25:31] I don't know who those people are.
[00:25:32] Love them.
[00:25:33] They're a gosh darn delight.
[00:25:34] Is it just me or have they like grown up a lot since the last season?
[00:25:40] I feel like they're in their same costumes.
[00:25:44] But like puberty has hit and it's almost like they're fully grown men running around in those costumes.
[00:25:52] Again, wonderful actors.
[00:25:54] I love seeing them but it was a little jarring.
[00:25:58] Okay.
[00:25:59] And then we have to talk about Allie.
[00:26:01] And those flirting techniques.
[00:26:05] Clearly she's learned more than just her school subjects from Elizabeth Thornton because she's using Elizabeth's flirting techniques.
[00:26:16] She's like good things.
[00:26:23] You know like that kind of thing.
[00:26:25] I'm not doing it justice because she's doing it much better than I ever could.
[00:26:29] But what's going to happen between the two of them?
[00:26:32] Is he an appropriate age for her?
[00:26:36] Anyway, it was really cute.
[00:26:40] And it was very well done.
[00:26:42] But I was like, wait, what?
[00:26:43] How old is he?
[00:26:44] Who taught her how to flirt?
[00:26:45] How is she so good at it?
[00:26:49] I mean, her being good at it was just debatable.
[00:26:52] Well, listen.
[00:26:53] But Jax, that was great.
[00:26:54] That was a great little screen test from Jax.
[00:26:55] That's right.
[00:26:56] Filo.com.
[00:26:57] DTH.
[00:26:57] Yes.
[00:26:58] Because the audio, lots of eyes, lots of moving eyes.
[00:27:01] Lots of moving eyes.
[00:27:02] For sure.
[00:27:02] I don't know who's listening, but Filo.
[00:27:04] We're on Filo.
[00:27:06] Yes, we are.
[00:27:07] I have a couple.
[00:27:08] One, listen, a different time.
[00:27:09] It's a different time.
[00:27:10] It's a different time.
[00:27:11] It's the 1920s.
[00:27:12] But when Nathan calls Elizabeth his best girl, it does make me think that there are other girls.
[00:27:20] Yeah.
[00:27:20] Some side pieces.
[00:27:21] It's like a thing.
[00:27:22] Can you imagine if Matthew Nathan had side pieces?
[00:27:25] We weren't official.
[00:27:26] We weren't official.
[00:27:27] You were with Lucas.
[00:27:27] We were on a break.
[00:27:29] My best is you're my best girl.
[00:27:31] You're my best girl.
[00:27:33] It could change.
[00:27:35] Like, we'll see how the season goes.
[00:27:36] Currently in the rankings, you are best girl.
[00:27:38] Currently your best girl.
[00:27:40] Also, you know, it's a different time.
[00:27:42] But I, in 2025, have no desire for a park to be named after my children.
[00:27:48] None.
[00:27:49] And, like, there's nothing about that potential possibility.
[00:27:53] It's one of the worst plot developments ever.
[00:27:54] And listen, there's lots of parks in our area.
[00:27:57] It's one of the great things about Greenville is how many parks we have.
[00:28:00] Great parks.
[00:28:00] So it's like not, you know, maybe it wouldn't be special as having, this is going to be a big park, like a national park.
[00:28:06] I understand, like, big park.
[00:28:08] So maybe, like, if you had a chance to name a national park after your children, maybe you'd be like, okay, well, I guess.
[00:28:16] I don't think one is a bargaining chip for the other.
[00:28:19] Sure.
[00:28:19] Like, I get it.
[00:28:21] Like, Rosemary's character would want a park named after her daughter.
[00:28:25] Sure.
[00:28:25] But her thing is, Lee, you cannot leave for, like, all month long, basically, except on the weekends he'd be back.
[00:28:36] So basically the pitch is he's going to be gone to Capital City in this province that we all know the name of.
[00:28:41] We'll say the council one, two, three.
[00:28:43] Capital.
[00:28:44] And you're going to be back only on the weekends.
[00:28:46] You can't do that.
[00:28:47] I don't want you to leave.
[00:28:48] You can't do it.
[00:28:49] I'm putting my foot down.
[00:28:51] You know, you can't be gone that long.
[00:28:54] And then he says, well, they're going to name the park after Goldie.
[00:28:58] And she's like, well, I don't think that those are bargaining.
[00:29:04] Like, I don't think that would fix the problem.
[00:29:07] Like, if he goes, hey, they're giving me a million dollars and I don't have to work at all after this.
[00:29:14] Fixes the problem.
[00:29:14] Or we're going to go on a three-week vacation when I get back.
[00:29:18] Saying that they're going to name the park, I just, I don't know.
[00:29:23] It was crazy how quickly she went from absolutely not to, well.
[00:29:27] They're going to name the park.
[00:29:28] I mean, they're going to name the park after my daughter.
[00:29:29] So my hands are kind of tight.
[00:29:30] That's the least I could do.
[00:29:31] That's right.
[00:29:31] That's kind of tight.
[00:29:33] My last one is they're going to name a park after a baby.
[00:29:38] And I understand that that is the bargaining chip.
[00:29:41] That's right.
[00:29:42] But both park themed.
[00:29:44] Like, I can think of somebody who is more deserving of having a park named after them.
[00:29:51] Mountie Jack.
[00:29:52] We talked all episode about how he is a hero's hero.
[00:29:58] He's amazing.
[00:29:59] I heard it no less than a thousand times this episode.
[00:30:02] Listen, I'm sure Baby Goldie is a delight.
[00:30:05] Does not deserve this.
[00:30:09] And it should go.
[00:30:10] The Jack Thornton National Park makes a lot more sense.
[00:30:13] It should go.
[00:30:13] It should be.
[00:30:15] And maybe they'll get there.
[00:30:16] But it seemed a little tone deaf to name the park after Baby when a Mountie comes in from out of town and says,
[00:30:25] Hey, we found his commissioner medal.
[00:30:27] When we were dating.
[00:30:28] The highest.
[00:30:29] We died for freedom or whatever.
[00:30:32] I don't know.
[00:30:34] But didn't die for their freedom.
[00:30:36] It's hard to say.
[00:30:37] But I was still foggy on where he went and why.
[00:30:40] But at the very least, he died for them and he had the commissioner's medal.
[00:30:46] So definitely worthy of park.
[00:30:50] Baby Goldie while great baby.
[00:30:52] Great baby.
[00:30:53] Still just baby.
[00:30:54] Still just baby.
[00:30:55] So it's tough.
[00:30:55] Dan?
[00:30:57] The Mountie that comes in to give Elizabeth this news, and by news I mean medal, is he, in his bedroom at home, he has a picture of Nathan Grant with a bullseye around his face.
[00:31:10] And he is shooting holes in it all the time.
[00:31:13] He could not dislike Nathan Grant more.
[00:31:15] Yeah, what the heck was that guy's deal?
[00:31:17] And for the love of me, I don't know why.
[00:31:18] He starts by looking and going, this is Mountie Jack's name.
[00:31:21] And he looks right at Nathan and goes, not so easily replaced.
[00:31:25] Bro, F off.
[00:31:26] Like, dude, he didn't do anything to you.
[00:31:29] Why did you do that?
[00:31:29] And then, and then on the way out of town, just going to put, just pull the pin on this grenade as I ride out of town.
[00:31:35] He rides by Nathan and goes, weren't you supposed to be leading the mission there?
[00:31:41] Wait, dude, dude, come on.
[00:31:43] What did Nathan Grant ever do to you?
[00:31:45] Like, he already is feeling all those feelings.
[00:31:47] And this Mountie is like, I'm going to really dig the knife in here.
[00:31:51] I think I've come to town.
[00:31:53] I'm going to, I'm going to dig the knife in.
[00:31:55] And I know, and somebody in the comments just said, I do think he has a history with Nathan.
[00:32:00] I think even if he has a history with Nathan, this is above and beyond mean.
[00:32:04] And it's crazy.
[00:32:05] Jack's touched on this earlier brand, but I do want to know who Elizabeth students voted for in the 1920 election.
[00:32:13] Holy cow.
[00:32:14] I, I know there are only so many child actors in British Columbia, but please graduate these poor young adults.
[00:32:21] They are, they are all living a full life with spouses and children and mortgages.
[00:32:29] Like these children have been at this school since time began.
[00:32:33] I know they're bringing in some new recruits, but there are six or seven kids in that school room that have to be in their twenties.
[00:32:40] It's crazy.
[00:32:42] It's crazy.
[00:32:43] It's crazy.
[00:32:43] And you're teaching the same lessons every year.
[00:32:45] Please stop it right now.
[00:32:48] It is straining any credulity that this show actually has, or even credibility for that matter.
[00:32:55] Back to you, Brian.
[00:32:56] Thank you.
[00:32:56] It's time for hopes and valleys.
[00:32:58] It's where we talk about things that are giving us hope for the future and or bumming us out.
[00:33:01] Uh, Jax, what you got?
[00:33:04] Okay.
[00:33:04] My hopes and valleys for this season.
[00:33:07] Um, I'm hopeful that Hickam and Macy were going to come back from their honeymoon and that we're going to get to see more of them.
[00:33:15] Please bring them back.
[00:33:17] Maybe even Kayla Wallace will waltz her way back in the Hope Valley.
[00:33:20] It would be great to see them again.
[00:33:22] Um, also hopeful that Jack Wagner will be given a little bit more to do.
[00:33:27] I would like that.
[00:33:28] Please give him a mystery this season.
[00:33:31] Um, I guess my valley is that this was a lovely start to the season, but it did feel a little bit slow and I'm going to need a little bit more drama.
[00:33:42] So I'm, I'm, it's a valley that I think there might not be more drama.
[00:33:49] Um, but I am cautiously optimistic for this season of One Calls a Heart and incredibly excited to cover it with my buddies, Brian and Dan.
[00:33:59] Thank you.
[00:34:00] And all of you.
[00:34:01] Hardys.
[00:34:02] Hardys.
[00:34:02] People who don't watch.
[00:34:03] All right.
[00:34:04] She's still going.
[00:34:04] Uh, people who hate watch.
[00:34:05] People who aren't quite Hardys, but like still love it.
[00:34:09] Hardys.
[00:34:10] It's a fun community.
[00:34:12] And, uh, hopefully we'll have a wild ride this season.
[00:34:16] Thank you, Jax.
[00:34:18] Safe travels.
[00:34:19] I, um, you know, there was my, my hope is that we're going to get a villain this season.
[00:34:24] And that villain is Lucas.
[00:34:27] And cool.
[00:34:28] There was, you know, just a couple of, of, of tiny moments in this episode that made me think that maybe, maybe they're going that direction.
[00:34:37] Um, and it all involves Rosemary and Lee.
[00:34:40] Rosemary at one point basically like questions the character of Lucas.
[00:34:44] Mm-hmm.
[00:34:46] Out of, out of nowhere.
[00:34:47] Yeah.
[00:34:47] Um, and then, um, Lee's kind of seeming, uh, like taken aback by the guy, um, on the train.
[00:34:56] Like, hey, you're still dealing with this guy?
[00:34:58] Like what's.
[00:34:58] Lucas has had to.
[00:34:59] So, Lucas.
[00:35:00] I don't.
[00:35:00] I don't want to play more roles on this television program than anyone should be allowed to play.
[00:35:04] It's crazy.
[00:35:05] But listen, the, it, it, it all makes sense.
[00:35:08] This guy was in love.
[00:35:10] He was engaged to be married.
[00:35:12] I believe he was engaged.
[00:35:14] Yes.
[00:35:14] Yes.
[00:35:15] Um, I, I don't know.
[00:35:16] For a full season.
[00:35:16] And, uh, it's a fever dream.
[00:35:19] And, uh, then is, uh, broken up with, and now he has to watch.
[00:35:26] And every day is just slowly spiraling out of control.
[00:35:29] And so I, the villain arc is there.
[00:35:32] It is, it is primed and it's just up to them to take it.
[00:35:36] So I am, I'm hopeful that it's going to happen.
[00:35:39] Dan.
[00:35:39] So my hope involves the Canfield daughter, uh, going to college at a place college for a,
[00:35:48] like students with visual impairment.
[00:35:50] Um, I don't know how readily available that is in 1921.
[00:35:55] I like, you know, there were in the 1800s, there were three really great schools for the
[00:36:02] blind founded and ones in Pittsburgh, ones in Boston.
[00:36:06] I've been to both of those, not been to the one in Connecticut.
[00:36:09] Those are the three, but those schools in the Pacific Northwest being readily available
[00:36:13] in 1921 is crazy.
[00:36:16] Now this, you know, when calls the arts never pretended to take place in real history or
[00:36:21] time, but as you know, as someone who has some interest in that subject education and,
[00:36:27] uh, you know, educating folks with visual impairments, I was fascinated by that.
[00:36:32] And I'm interested to see what they do with that, if anything, and how they treat it.
[00:36:37] Uh, fascinated by that.
[00:36:38] My value is literally just listen to my hot take.
[00:36:41] And I think you'll, you'll, you'll get it.
[00:36:42] It's pretty much everything else.
[00:36:43] And we did spend a lot of time with Nathan and Elizabeth, which meant we spent no time
[00:36:47] with gallon or Jack Wagner or no time with May Sue or Hickam.
[00:36:53] There's characters that are better that we got none of.
[00:36:56] So there's that.
[00:36:57] Uh, we did it.
[00:36:58] Right.
[00:36:58] Congratulations.
[00:36:59] It's time for the what's called my heart.
[00:37:00] It's where somebody sends an email about something that's bringing them joy.
[00:37:03] That's calling their heart.
[00:37:04] If you will, you can send in your email to hello at deck, the Homer.com.
[00:37:08] And, uh, Dan will read it.
[00:37:10] And before you turn it off, because you think it's a chicken of the week situation.
[00:37:13] It is not.
[00:37:13] It does sound like a chicken of the week.
[00:37:15] This is serious.
[00:37:16] This is a real email.
[00:37:18] Yeah.
[00:37:18] Chicken of the week is real.
[00:37:19] Also real, but sometimes it sounds like a bit.
[00:37:21] Yeah.
[00:37:22] This is real.
[00:37:23] It sounds real.
[00:37:24] It is real.
[00:37:24] It's me, Tina.
[00:37:25] It is not.
[00:37:26] Here's what's calling my heart.
[00:37:27] No.
[00:37:27] No, we're not doing it.
[00:37:28] No, we're not doing it.
[00:37:28] Tina's not here.
[00:37:29] Sorry.
[00:37:30] Actually, it is Tina.
[00:37:31] I'm just kidding.
[00:37:31] Wouldn't that have been crazy?
[00:37:32] Oh.
[00:37:33] No, this is from Sarah Wallace.
[00:37:35] Sarah Wallace.
[00:37:35] Hello folks.
[00:37:37] Hi, Sarah.
[00:37:38] Hi.
[00:37:39] This is Sarah here.
[00:37:40] And what's calling my heart is the enjoyment I get from listening to past episodes.
[00:37:45] I'm currently on season nine of when calls the heart and I watch every episode and I
[00:37:49] quickly follow it up with your recap.
[00:37:51] I have quite the affinity for your seasons eight and nine recaps that were definitely
[00:37:57] all recorded months and months apart.
[00:38:01] Honestly, I don't even know if you still read what's calling my heart emails on the
[00:38:05] podcast anymore, but I'll find out in a few months when I catch up to your season 11
[00:38:10] recaps.
[00:38:10] Oh, Sarah, this is season 12.
[00:38:12] Thanks so much for making me laugh out loud as I drive around and do chores.
[00:38:18] Keep it up.
[00:38:19] Sarah Wallace.
[00:38:20] How about that?
[00:38:21] Sarah Wallace.
[00:38:21] God bless you.
[00:38:22] Sarah, do you listen to anything else we do or are you just a win calls the heart?
[00:38:26] Let us know.
[00:38:27] Send in a follow up.
[00:38:27] I'd love to.
[00:38:29] I would love to think that there's somebody out there that only listens to win calls
[00:38:32] the heart.
[00:38:32] I'm sure they're on the show.
[00:38:33] I think that's fun.
[00:38:35] All right.
[00:38:36] Well, we did it, everybody.
[00:38:36] Congratulations, Gus, to us and to Gus.
[00:38:38] Gus, you did it, buddy.
[00:38:40] You know what you did.
[00:38:41] People didn't think he could.
[00:38:41] Great job.
[00:38:42] They didn't think he could.
[00:38:43] But Gus did.
[00:38:44] People said he couldn't do it.
[00:38:45] All right, Gus.
[00:38:46] And then we're back tomorrow.
[00:38:47] Tomorrow is The Way Home, correct?
[00:38:49] Yes, tomorrow.
[00:38:50] Ryan will be joining us to talk about The Way Home.
[00:38:52] It's going to be a lot of fun.
[00:38:53] So come on back, will you?
[00:38:54] Until then, maybe the first to wish you a Merry Christmas.
